I just took picture of mine on flat bed for the last time, being towed from my yard. Sold for scrape despite looking like a million bucks. I love them but will never own another. Some things you need to know before buying one: be rich or run in other direction, do not own one for more than 3 years of being new (without warranty), do not us accessories from the dealer ( they will have galvanic accelerated corrosion and you will pay for repairs - is part of their business plan), etc.

I’ve done 10,000 km in my new Defender 240 S 2 Litre twin turbo diesel in New Zealand taking it off road extensively on many demanding tracks. It has been faultless so far with 6 months ownership. It is fast and powerful on road with great road holding on our twisty windy roads. The interior is well designed, great materials, lots of USB ports, charging points etc and we find the touch screen quick and easy to use as are the off road programs ‘ mud & ruts’, ‘rock crawl’ etc. we love the vehicle and it’s all round capability. It is a big truck bigger than our Landcruiser V8 turbo diesel. The Defender is 400kg lighter than the Toyota Landcruiser so has about a 400 kg greater payload which is very useful, it’s much quicker and far more economical than the TLC and has the same 3500 kg towing capacity. The only two things I don’t like about the new Defender are the touchy over servo’d brakes but you soon get used to being more gentle with the brake pedal, but the servo assistance is just right when towing heavy loads. The second dislike is the lack of wide angle cornering headlights. When night driving on narrow wing roads or off road tracks all you see is a ‘dark hole’ about 45 to 90 degrees to the side of the vehicle made worse by ones eyes been bright light adapted to the otherwise powerful low/ high beams. The difficulties fitting front recovery hooks and the high cost of fitting the LandRover supplied winch and mounting kit are a disappointment. Overall, though the new Defender is a joy to own It seems very rugged and well built. It’s air suspension gives it a luxurious ride like the RangRover and it’s class leading off road ride height and front/rear and ramp over angles are well documented on many RU-vid blogs. It’s light years ahead of the old Defender in nearly all aspects Martin Rees Auckland New Zealand

I know it’s not your experience but I’ve had Land Rovers for 15 years and Toyota for 12 years prior to that. Coming from a native British bloke, though I would naturally be a little biased in favour of the Land Rover, two issues I can't get past. One is value for money - It is very expensive once you have added 'normal' equipment. Second is Reliability - This is across the entire JLR range. I love the capability and the styling of Land Rovers/Range Rovers is usually brilliant, but owning one just causes me too much anxiety.. A wonderful car soon becomes a horrible car if it starts letting you down...

@simonuden8450 3 года назад
@@Erin-Thor Was it new 8 years ago? Are you in North America, where there seems to be a scarcity of competent mechanics - just watch the ‘Car Wizard’ channel. I’m curious, because I’ve owned Land Rovers from new since 2004 and only ever had wear and tear costs to pay for. That’s four Discovery’s and two RRSs, and neither have I heard of any of my friends who have them having issues either.
@Erin-Thor
@Erin-Thor 3 года назад
@@simonuden8450 - Guilty, I have homes in Colorado and Texas, and actually took the thing off road. I didn’t realize that voided the warranty, Land Rover pointed out the manual clearly stated “NOT INTENDED FOR OFF PAVEMENT USE” and the roads in Colorado that I travel are sometimes dirt. They saw the debris in the undercarriage and almost denied the last transmission issue. And I assure you that first time failures of original parts have NOTHING to do with the mechanics at either of the dealerships I frequented. You can blame the mechanic for the first alternator failure, the first power window failures, starter failure etc. Don’t misunderstand me, loved the ride, and in muddy slop or snow and ice the car performed beautifully, it just wasn’t built to be used. Edit. And your comment that you or I had no costs to pay for, because it was all covered by the warranty is idiocy. Vehicle downtime costs real money, four rows at my expense, one over 200 miles to a dealership... that wasn’t cheap. When you lose a day, have to pay for hotels, flights and rental cars, those expenses matter. A vehicle is a tool, if it isn’t reliable, it’s a rock.

Hi guys, thanks for all your great videos...love to watch. Regarding recovery points at the rear of the new Defender: lift the floor cover in the rear, you should have a screw in recovery eye (good size). The two recovery points on each end of the rear bumper with the little rectangular covers actually clip out if you push on the side of the little cover. Behind the little cover is the screw in point for the recovery eye, which is "snatch" graded. Greetings from South Africa, Charles.

Brakes do take getting used to, that’s because of the system that recovers energy from the brakes, but once you do, they work really well. And that’s another reason to get the P400 - which comes with a 4 piston setup. 2 piston setups like on the lower model, doesn’t cut the musterd.

I think one of the main things you should do with the Defender is to just use it a lot in the way most people would. You guys own it so someone should be driving it to work and back every day. If there are errands to run like picking up lunch or a trailer then send it. Sure you can also take it down trails when you get a chance but just seeing how it deals with a daily grind seems like what this story has become about. We know it has good capabilities at this point. We just don't know how often it is capable of those abilities.

After 4 Land Rover/Range Rovers I finally decided I had outgrown breaking down on the Jersey TNPK. Not being able to shut the vehicle off at a Dermatology appointment that I waited 5 months for and had to miss. Overheating, and of course a zillion fault lights and body pieces falling off while driving. I love the new Defender from everything I've read, but you said it, Coolant fault light, Suspension fault light, radio not working. 3 things in a month that aren't really small. Sounds like you guys are so thankful that it didn't implode like your last 2 this one was nothing compared to those 2 you gave back. Doug DeMuro did 7000 miles and had a broken sun roof. That's not too bad but still, if it were out of warranty that could be a very costly repair. Out of warranty these need to be traded in unless you just really hate yourself and want more torture.

Roman, you asked at the end of your clip what we want to know for your next update. I ordered an SE and what I want to know is whether this solution Gregs suggests here works. Not just works, but the dealers here have the part and can install it at a reasonable cost. Why don’t you order this part and try it out and let us know. Surely there must be a better solution than that hook you attached. Land Rover wants to sell a cool high design vehicle. But surely they need to get serious about sorting out this recovery hook mess if they want to be taken seriously about off road capability. This is just basic.

Thanks for the review, Guys. How about in the next video reviewing where the Defender is now with add- on off- road customizations, both from LR and after market. By now you would imagine that off- road companies would have started making after market, more functional roof racks, snorkels, roof ladders, bumper replacements, recovery hitches. winches, etc. Basically things to convert the vehicle into a more versatile off roader. My thought here being that the lure of this vehicle will likely be from those that always wanted one because of the legacy but couldn't get one in America and will then want to fit it out for off- roading.

Every Rover owner I know agrees 100% - this is in every way a Disco, not a Defender. Just look at the role each has traditionally played: Defender is utilitarian, sold to farmers and military and adventurers and contractors because it's easily modified to suite your specific needs. No luxury, just a box that gets the job done. Range Rover is luxury that still has off-road capability even if it's seldom used. Disco splits the difference; good off road capability but entry-level luxury mixed in. That describes this new "Disco 6" to a T far more than the traditional roll of a Defender.

As an LR4 owner who has modified it, I agree with you completely. Needs mods for 18 in wheels on the 6 cylinder, an EAS to coil with two in lift conversion kit for those that want to ditch the air suspension, and some bullbar style winch compatible front bumpers. I know JLR has the winch with center pushbar option, but I would like more protection on the front corners. And of course a solution for tow hooks- that is absolutely unforgivable. Nice thing is though, it doesn’t need many more mods. Lifted with 18s (whether with lift rods for air sus or a coil swap) will allow for better and bigger rubber which will get rid of its achilles heel.
