Here's Why I Bought ANOTHER Porsche 993 911 (Even Though I Already Own One)

Porsche ownership becomes an addiction, and the fact that I basically impulse bought a second Porsche 993 911 shows it can become a slippery slope. But sometimes it makes sense to buy one when a really good example comes your way.

It looks so good as is. Personally I would leave the duck tail and the RS splitters. No matter what you do you make great choices in your mods!

Interesting path you’re headed down. Personally I chose to have one air cooled 911 and one “modern” 911. My reasoning was that the modern one is so very nice, comfortable and has all the latest tech, comforts, reliability, etc and my wife enjoys the driving experience more. But what it doesn’t have, and this is a big reason for me, is it doesn’t have the same level of engagement that my air cooled has. As you know almost any air cooled 911 is so manual, no nannie’s, so visceral and just raw that it takes me back and transports me to a “simpler” time. Lastly, if I don’t have an air cooled, then I can’t participate in some of the very best rallies I have ever experienced. The air cooled community is like no other and I get massive enjoyment out of the people I have met, the friendships that have come from that and the unique experience with that community and cars. We will be sad to see you leave the air cooled community, but I suspect we’ll see you come back before too long. 😉👍🏻

The good news is we get to live vicariously through all your purchases and sales which is fund to watch. I completely get the cost of ownership. You take pride in getting your car not only sorted but modded to your tastes which does take time and money. I bought a 993 as my air cooled since I was pretty convinced it was one of the most robust air cooled 911s to purchase. However when I take it out I do take a "slight" pause if something is going to happen which so far has been solid for which I am grateful. I am sure on the GT4 and 991 you just put the key in the ignition and go which is a great feeling which I felt on my 997.2. Personally I would leave the mods on the 993 for a while. I like the front splitter and the duck tail is a iconic look from days gone by. Just drive and enjoy and when you want a change you have the parts ready to go. I think your car stands out a bit more with these mods. A stock white 993 maybe a bit to "standard" for your tastes.

Stock is boring, the duck tail is fantastic!! Different from what your other is to differentiate it! Love my RS clutch and while the engine is out, take advantage of the Porsche wire harness buy back deal they have. I had all my 96 wires on the engine out and only cost a few hundred after their discount. Engine response was a big change, feels like a brand new engine!

As always, very honest and detailed feedback on your reasons, it’s your money so it’s your choice and we respect it 🎉 Totally understandable why you are going out of aircooled - I for myself would never do older than 993 for the same reasons. I agree with removing ducktails and splitters, a NB 993 C2 is just a wonderful aesthetic wonder on its own. Looking forward to you sharing your insights of the GT4 and the 991.2 C2S!

Haha you crack me up dude! You're definitely the type of seller I love to buy from! Air-cooled cars are sweet indeed, but I'm super glad you came to your senses about the modern gen water pumpers. It's nice to own both types. I think that new 993 is sweet as is. Leave it alone! (I mean you won't, but that's my opinion haha). The GT4 phenomenal. Hoping for a 18' GT3 someday 😊

Hey Will, I can relate to your Porsche journey. I have long hoods and a 993 and I love them all. Long hoods require a lot of $ to get them to a good place (OCD kicks in). Personally, I would not change the look of your new 993 for now. Drive it for a month or two then decide. I know it’s your car, but I love how it looks and spices up a bland color. That’s my point of view.

No way, keep the RS splitters and the ducktail. I LOVE the 993 coupe lines but the front lower valance was always too tucked-under and the back really benefits from some kind of spoiler or wing. Also, the 18" Carrera wheel looks incredible on 993s and 968s.

Thank you for sharing more of your journey with us! I love the look of the ducktail on the 993, I’d keep it. Swap out the splitters since you’re already having the original parts painted. Sad to see you get out of aircooled! I originally followed because of that content and it was helpful as I got my first 911 (an SC). Either way, still appreciate your content and excited to see what comes next!

My friend, I’ve been watching your Porsche journey from the beginning (thanks for all the great content by the way). I don’t know you in real life but I feel like I have some insight into your thought process, based on what you’ve shared. Let me start by saying you buy every car with the best intentions, but the logic behind each purchase is usually a little flimsy, as evidenced by how often you change your mind. There’s always an itch to try and own the next great thing. No judgment, it’s just the way you are! I think you’ll regret selling your dialed in rally car 993 and you’ll eventually get bored of the stock GP white, after all, you’ve experienced what the platform is capable of. You’re not a collector… that’s why the pristine Amazon Green is in a museum instead of your garage! You might end up modding the 993 and end up back at square one. At the end of the day, I just like to drive and I think you’re the same way. Keep doing your thing, it’s only money! I am actually glad to hear you’ve gained some perspective on air cooled cars. They can be a pain to sort out, but it’s not that big of a deal if you’re keeping the car a long, long time. I love both air and water cooled cars. So many good ones out there. 993 and 991.2 GT3 Touring owner speaking from my experience.

I've followed your channel since I discovered it and went back through all the videos. I can't afford air-cooled but the journey with you has shown me it is a total minefield. No matter how good the cars have appeared, they have, by your own admission, cost a fortune. My manual 2002 996.2 C2 may have been cheap in comparison, but I bought the best available and have had a trouble free experience for over 2 years. For sheer driving fun it is hard to beat. You did cover one in one of your videos before: you should really try one out for the analogue driving experience. Keep the videos coming.

Thanks for sharing your Porsche ownership journey. The fun thing is that there are so many air and water cooled Porsches to try and enjoy for any type of driving--track, back roads, around town. Congratulations on your new 993. Looks fantastic, but so does your silver one. I'd keep them both if you can. If you plan on changing your new 993 back to a stock look, let me know if you plan to sell the ducktail. I might be interested. Regarding the new cars, I totally understand. I bought a '09 997 Turbo manual about a year ago and I love it. But, I also love my 993. They are totally different but equally fun, for different reasons. Your new-to-you 993 looks great. I’m a little jealous but I will say I am VERY pleased with my 2005 Carrera. As for the mods …. I can see you selling this car in a year or so and ‘original’ brings the highest price; therefore, I’d reverse the splitter and deck lid mods. Mods are fine but they are personal, buyers lean in to original and if they want to they can apply their own mods. Best wishes for a fun driving season ahead! Cheers from Round Rock, TX.

Love watching your journey because it doesn’t cost me money like buying and selling them myself 😂.

But, I’m combination with the RS front lip it looks phenomenal. It really balances the look front to rear. Love the look of this car. If anything remove the decal on the rear, it’s a bit big. A white 993 with red heckblend is really all you need. The Carrera script on the side wouldn’t be my choice but it works with the wheels quite well and has continuity with the interior color-way. Tinker with it, make it your own. Get a second set of wheels to change things up between seasons (maybe consider a chunkier spoke like a 996 sport techno) and you are good to go.

So interresting to hear your feelings about aircooled and watercooled change due to repairs. I've been there! Regarding the ducktail and splitters: I feel they look absolutely ace on Grand Prix White, and I'm an original look kinda guy! Without them, the car in that colour looks too mundane. I'm at the point where I am considering changing my "Forever keeper" 3.2 Carrera because I notice I miss the airconditioning and power steering of the 993, preventing me to take it on long roadtrips...

Mr. Rennthusiast, keep it coming! I consulted you a couple of years ago before jumping on the 993 drug, so you’re partly responsible for my addiction, which makes me somewhat obliged to comment on you queries… I perfectly understand your inclination to bring the new white one to its original state, but I think that sort of defeats the whole Porsche ethos. I guess if you’re were more concerned with maximizing your resale value it would make sense, but my humble opinion is that these cars are meant to be used, and in doing so molded and personalized to the owner’s own preferences… I actually think of those mods as part of the patina that comes with age and history, so taking them off is sort of erasing part of its memory… Also, I must confess I just installed a Singer-type duck tale on mine, and it looks beautiful, and goes great with the various other mods [muffler, suspension, MoMo wheel, etc.]. PS: Please do go forward with that other 981 GT4 review ASAP; I’m personally eyeing one too and would love to hear your opinions on it [maybe you’ll be the final nudge I need to expand my vice in that direction 😎😎].

This said, having the RS front would require something to "balance" the look on the rear so I would go for an RS wing (which is not too much like other wings and it complements the car well). Then I would get rid of both those wheels and the Carrera stripe: personally I don't like elements from other series as they remind me of other looks and times so they look off to me. In the end you will have an RS front bumper and rear wing so you would just need a nice set of BBS E88 or similar which would really makes sense complementing the racing spirit of the RS parts. White is also a perfect racing color so overall you would end up with a great 993 with subtle and tasteful mods. Another option would be to revert everything back to stock (removing ducktail, RS front, wheels and stripe) and buy a set of Speedline Sport Classics: this would be a more elegant spec which would go well with the tan interior which is more classic rather than racing. This option would also cost you less so I guess it's also a matter of how much money you want to spend on it.

Agree with you, Will. I’ve finally found and just bought my 981 CGTS and selling my 92 964 to make room. Unless you wrench on them yourself, air cools are not for the faint of wallet. You need your mechanic on speed dial and the patience while the repairs get done. Admittedly I got caught in the romanticism of the aircool. So glad I got to experience it and benefit from their appreciation but ready for this next P-car chapter. Do whatever makes you happiest.

I'd replace but keep the ducktail, keep the splitters and get some original 993 wheels but also keep the wheels that are on it: best of both worlds!

As owner of 95 993 originality can see your point but the new one enhances the 993look. Had mine 20 yes and darn reliable. The in and out nails u on costs.

Take the duck tail and rs splitters, add it to the polar silver car and sell it to me. That would my dream build for a 993. Just tastefully modded enough to be different. Both are beautiful. I am not a white fan either, but agree with the script and matching wheels that's a white car I could see myself with. No matter what you do, you have an amazing collection that anyone should be proud to have.

The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS is such an icon. People love that car. It's so desirable. I always feel the best idea is to make your car faster. Make it stop better. Make it handle better. (and lastly, make it cooler) You have the original parts. Sell them when you sell the car. As is, your car is so unique. Your car won't get lost in the parking lot. Try to get Magnus to raise an eyebrow....lol

You'll get zero judgement from me; I absolutely understand your reasons for shifting more towards the newer water cooled cars, and I think the decision to keep at least one 993 is the best way to satisfy the air cooled craving with good reliability and more every day creature comforts. Car interests should never be set in stone. We should explore the options and buy/enjoy what we love for now. If that changes in the future, that's fine

Grand Prix white is a favorite of mine as it is clean & understated showing the elegant lines. Side scripts don't excite me. Have fun with it!

I'd keep it as is. Love the 73 RS vibe. When you decide to sell it, you include the OE splitter and lid to the buyer.

Personally, I’m a “keep it stock” guy…but I’d keep the wheels and side script as they are (great color) and lose the duck tail, splitters, and back script. You’re mostly swapping parts so you can always change them back…

25 Porsche cars in my garage since 1982. Agree with the 981 GT4. My yellow one with 5k miles is a beast. I don’t like white cars but yours stands out from the crowd. I would leave your white car “as is” and have original parts on hand for next buyer.

I took the GT4 out this afternoon to run some errands and gas it up. Hadn’t driven it in about a week. Every time I get back in I am reminded just how special and good it is.

The white with the script and no other mod will be classically beautiful, with tasteful flare. The wheels on it are gorgeous. But I'd live with the ducktail and splitters for a while longer. The car is sick. And I love the silver one with those wheels. Is there an addiction at play in your Posche cravings? I think your're following your passion, and that's soul work.

Hi Will, understood on getting burnt on the air cooled cars. I admire them but I have only owned water cooled myself. One modern car that fits your ethos is the Carrera T. I owned the last 991.2 and have the 992 version on order (delivery in August). The smaller turbos make the car feel naturally aspirated and if specced well, they are the lightest modern 911's. I'm in Upstate SC area, if you want to review the new T when it arrives, let me know!

I like the mods. While I am a total OEM guy, I do believe Porsche has always been a brand that supports an individual approach (just think of the long option list that Porsche offers to its customers). Both mods are very much "Porsche like". Who else has a "Ducktail" ?- and if you have a ducktail, doing some aero in the front just balances this mod. Both mods look great.

I would keep it as is. It’s eye-catching. it looks like a drivers car. The alternative would look like a collectors piece, pretty much a Boring plain old white 993 at that. The good news is the changes you are planning to make can be reversed at any time giving you the best of both worlds. And if you get tired of the plain look, you can bolt back on the RS styling which looks like it’s hauling ass when it’s sitting there.

My vote is to keep the white one as is in terms of the ducktail and RS flares for now. They look really tasteful. Since you have the stock parts you can always reverse it down the line. I think if you were to ever sell it then bringing it back to stock would be an appealing selling point. I've never been a fan of scripts on anything other than a long hood though. I get what the former owner was going for here with the older RS throwback look, but I think the 993 would look cleaner with the side and rear scripts removed. Then add either the traditional Carrera or 911 emblems in a flat black on the rear for contrast.
