Just got a 2005 9-3 5 speed manual last week with 159k miles. tuned up the engine, new valve cover gasket, replaced struts brakes & rotors (DIY) next when I have more funding will be timing (taking to the shop) & serpentine belt, drop the tank for a new fuel pump since the sending unit is shot (might as well replace the entire assembly) When all that is settled I will work on some cosmetics & possibly a down pipe or cat back (can't decide) but so far she's is running like a pearl & I love every bit of my saab.

Hi Auto Autopsy, I live in the UK and have a Saab 9-3 Aero 2.0T SS, this is the second 9-3 I've owned. This one is a 2007, facelift interior, but pre-facelift exterior, which personally I think is the best model year. I love this car, bought it as a police repo, so it was dirt cheap, 87000 miles and 4 previous owners when I got it 12 months ago, paid £1550 sterling for it. The car is great, pretty much bullet-proof, I've done routine maintenance, but nothing more apart from repairing the infamous connector for the tail light. The interior looks like brand new, I really don't understand why people complain about the quality of interior plastics and fittings, especially on the facelift models, they stand up really well to wear and tear. I don't think you find many 11 year old BMW's with the interior as good as my Saab is. I've never had any problem getting parts for it, they are cheap and readily available. Many are interchangeable with Vauxhall, despite what you said in this video! Also have a Honda S2000, which I also love for different reasons, but the Saab is my main daily. Keep up the good work, your posts on youtube are great.

Back in '81 my first two cars out of college were a '74 Volvo 164E and a '75 SAAB 99 EMS. I was working in a foreign car dealership in Alabama and my best friend was a SAAB mechanic who owned the same model 99 and a '65 (?) 95 (96?) with the v4. As soon as he moved away the Volvo and SAAB both went tits up . The closest I've come to owning another SAAB was the used 2000 Saturn LW I owned a few years ago. Same platform as the SAAB 95 wagon and some Opel thing. That was truly the last fun car I owned. I mourn the death of SAAB, and all the other cars that had character.

I just bought a documented one owner 2008 SAAB 9-5 Turbo with 96,000 miles on it,and the car is darn near perfect! I bought the car from a local dealer who deals with nothing but SAABS,and he has been in business since 1974,so I’m not too worried about servicing the car if it ever needs it. These things are just a BLAST to drive! Great video! 😎

As a being a Mechanic for 24 years and owned a BMW, Volvo, Honda, and of course a few SAAB's . The worst car which went tru my hands are Chrysler (Dodge), Audi ( VW) and the Bimmers. Actually BMW will make You a penny less in the first year of ownership. The worst engine 👉BMW 4 cyl. (N20) . 🌷 SAAB 🌷🇸🇪🚗🌷 - are the best 👍! Best interior with the best seats. You save plenty of 💰 money at the pump. Have enough power and bringing everyday enjoyment. Of course if You have good functioning brain and like to take care of Your 🚗 car !

I have a 2006 93 aero and a 2008 335I. love both cars so this is an unbiased opinion, both have been extremely reliable, but my aero V6 just chugs petrol while my 335i gets probably 4-5 litres more per 100km. The bmw also gives a much more rewarding driving experience bring rwd and being up in power. All said I’ll always love saab and my bmw doesn’t sound quite as good as the Turbo V6. Also I love the cream seats with black accents. Super nice

4.5 years ago bought my 08 SAAB 9-5 for $10,500 after discounts from an Audi dealer. Snow Silver Metallic and Black Leather. 61,450 miles, one owner, new brakes, oil changed every 3,000 miles. All records. At the time I was looking at the new Mazda 6, VW Passat TDI and Honda Accord EX-L. All were over $30,000. The 9-5 still looks great and is really different. Has never left me stranded. Fast as fu*k. Incredible seats and heated rears. Huge trunk. I never cared about depreciation since I plan on owning it for another 6 years or more. And every time I get in my SAAB I know that it's just about the safest structure of any car on the road. Parts are easy to find on 1st Gen 9-5's. And they last.

@DaveCollette
@DaveCollette 2 года назад
@@DannyT636 Hi there, Certainly depends on the year. The only issue that mine had that I felt was not acceptable wear and year was at 70,000km the transmission started slipping and I had to have the valve body rebuilt for two grand. That was annoying. Other than that everything was normal wear and tear. You'll have a lot of little things but they aren't expensive. The bypass valve will go but you can change that yourself for 60 bucks. Your hoses will leak but you can by silicon ones and replace them. You valve cover gasket will leak at some point, 250 bucks. Really I found the car to be very reliable and fun to drive. I have an e400 with much more power and the Saab is still a very fun car to drive on the highway. I did the suspension will a maptune kit and that was a game changer. I would say go for it.

I own a completely rebuilt 06 93 Aero. I also own a 95 BMW 530 since 02. The quality of the Saab interior is just comparable. Other parts on my Saab have failed that never were a problem with the BMW. Many of the used Saabs are in sad shape. I spent a year restoring mine and it is a really fun car now.

My first car was a Saab 95 back in the 80's, in the UK the stereotype Saab buyer was the architect, people who valued design but didn't want to be too showy. I've had a few Saab's since my first car, quite a lot more Alfa Romeos too and I've always liked both because they're a bit different, sure they do everything that other brands do, some things they do better and some not so well, but you actually develop an affinity with those cars an emotional bond and I've never had that with a BMW or Mercedes, sure I've appreciated what they could do but I didn't really care it was transport. A Saab or an Alfa is more than just transport, you could say the same about a TVR but they are a totally different beast.

Hey man,great content,just bought a Saab 93 today as my first car. Before today,I had very little knowledge on Saab,and this car showed up on Craigslist near me. I decided to try it out .I test drove and I absolutely loved it, I paid 2800 for it with 107000 miles. However, I found a few problem with it. The fuel level indicator is steady pointing empty.the right front power window doesn’t work, nor the mirror adjust. The right front door can’t be locket with car key. And there are clear water leaking from under the car.
@AutoAutopsy
@AutoAutopsy 6 лет назад
hmm, well first off, don't worry about the water leaking. That's from the AC and is 100% normal. As for the door related problems, I would take off the door panel and make sure all of the connectors are good.

While I did sell my Saab, I can still buy another one eventually. The hatchback models are pretty damn cool. So I've learned that in order to take care of a Saab, you must have a place to work on it and the money to buy parts for it. If you do all the work yourself (with the exception of a timing job), you'll be in good hands. I really want to RWD convert a Saab but I can imagine people will say "oh why did you do that? It was fine being FWD". My response to that is "Because it would've been cooler if they did make an RWD Saab. Think outside the box".
@AutoAutopsy

Couldn't agree with your video more..... I knew of the "Brand" Saab, but never knew the car "Saab" until 2 years ago with my first 2007 93 vert...... liked it so much I bought a 2008 93 Areo vert last week .... I think a Saab owner is a different breed of person. It's a statement or status symbol for the Saab owner...... as you said.. "They Don't Make Them Anymore" ...... There is an appeal to that. It's a great looking & great performing car that can't be categorized in one certain category of cars or performance. While I'm no expert on Saabs, or cars in general ..... I also own a 1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible and a 1970 Chevelle SS ......... The Saab Is An Absolute Pleasure To Drive!........ Great Review Young Man!

Last year I bought an 08 9-3 Aero convertible ( six cylinder ) one owner car. It's black but with the tan convertible top. I absolutely love that tan over the black. I'm about a grand in so far for maintenance ( AC charge and plugs and one coil as number five wasn't firing ) I may have paid up for it ($9,800 with 69,000) but i didn't care, it was ( and still is showroom new looking ) One owner, a woman, fully documented service records and my guess is that she was about 80lbs because the driver seat didn't even have a dent in the cushion. I also didn't mind paying up because of it being a six cylinder ( would you agree that my thought was that the engine won't work as hard as the four cylinder? ) I figure even if I spend a grand a year on service or repairs I'm ahead of what a MW or Audi would cost purchase price and maintenance.

Saw the vid on April 1st, thought it was quite good to be honest. People keep trying this about the resurgence of the Rover brand, which is now owned as part of Jaguar Landrover by TaTa India. Anyhow, over here at OverDrive Online, we also love Saab and have just covered a 900SE (Which evolved into the 95) and a couple of 93's, a 2007 estate and a last of the line 2011 saloons and all 3 are doing well for their age. Here in the UK I'd say Saab's are priced about right, with a great support network for both the casual owner and the enthusiast and here in Huddersfield we have 2 fantastic Saab specialists for both old and newer Saab's.

They are cheap because they are so good that owners drive them to OVER 125,000 to 170,000 miles. Also, the marque is no longer being produced. The flipped side is that the really good Saab cars are INCREASING in value.

Not only are they so cheap but if some parts do get expensive it's still pretty cheap since most Saab's are about average priced around 2500 and then you upgrade or update the car it still comes out to a really affordable price overall probably Around 5000 for basic maintenance and small upgrades or even new parts, but that goes the same for every used car. Especially for the first year with any new car people spend about 1000 give or take a few 100 for basic maintenance cheaper of course if you do it yourself and spend more on upgrades. Overall great buy☺

IF/WHEN the day comes it's engine dies, I will convert it to a RWD V8 car with an LS1 or LT1 chev n make it live on! (2001 SAAB 95 Aero 5 spd). A key reason why Saab went bust is because they made many changes to the original Vauxhall car e.g. the Saab 9-3 was a Vauxhall Vectra but had many areas revised including the chassis wheelbase was extended and strengthened. A separate Satnav was designed. Equally Saabs were popular with the professions in the UK e.g. Dentists, Architects etc.

In the Netherlands the Saab was always a kind of an "elite car" and i.m.o. in the future hrre will be a steady demand for Saabs from this group of people. Now it will be a fact that there will be no input of new cars and the existing ones will in average be declining in quality. That said, I think that prices will be steady or even will be growing for good maintained cars.

everyone loves my saabs ant cant believe what i paid they dont realize the book value is low but who care i got my first 9-3 year 2003 for 1,000 usa dollars i love it its one of the best driving cars i had i ever owned cant believe the speed and handling on a 4cylinder auto when i got it i knew it was gonna need a upper ball joint and two back tires, got 2 used tires for 50 bucks(25 each) and still havent gotten around to changing it since it only bothers me on the pothole side streets on highways and state roads you would never notice it im going to replace this year after a bad winter and alot of potholes once they fix them im gonna replace it im surprised it drives straight as an arrow im afraid once i change it then i need alignment then the money starts flowing, recently i see a 2003 9-5 aero with the 4 but 2.3 not 2.0 like the 9-3 for not much more than i paid for the 9-3 i thought i might a noticed a little difference maybe even none due to it was a little bigger this thing is faster than any 6 cylinder cars i owned plus the suspension is better honestly with the touring package and all the options you would never think it was 15 years old my dad had a dodge 2015 him and his buddy flipeed for profit it didnt have 1/10 the options, i mean power seats and heated are just about normal these days but these american made junk dont know what an option is i mean heated back seats air cooled seats like mini frige in summer with your acc turning your glove box into a cooler its not like a frige but atleast it jeeps your stuff cool in the summer i also have a 2005 9-3 black 5 speed the previous owner put 8 grand into it he sold it due to getting a job in syracuse ny due to a job and he needed 4x4 due to all the snow they get, my mechanic knows me and inspection ran out last month he could not believe the shape this car was and he had it stage tuned 2 3rd gear is a beast c cars no warning lights one ball joint out of 3 all for under 3600, usa dollars go to a dealer and see what you will get for 3600 usa bucks 1 piece of shit as long as the deals keep coming all build another garage lol they are all my favorites but the first one i paid 1,000 dollars for which i never heard of saab got me into the saab nut i am next up convertible i have a mustang convertible but i dont want to see it when its down there runnin 2 grand and u dont see the roof when its open it gets nicely stored away. Saab's are money pits if you buy a cheap one and want everything working. But if you ignore the electrical problems they are pretty good.... My $200 2003 Saab 9-5 linear was actually real nice handling driving despite over 200k all it needed to drive was an alternator which was in a very annoying location with stupid euro sockets but not too bad. resold it due to it not being that fast and had too many cars. Guy had issues with wipers and blower not working and lights I think. As I recall it was a fuse/relay something fixed it for the guy never heard from him so it might still be driving. My $600 1995 Saab 9000 Aero had every light on wipers,lights,radio,everything electrical had issues,never died but headgasket was going and drove like crap(suspension). but had good power so kept till got bored dealing with the random issues.Sold to some chick who knew everything about Saab's My $400 2000 9-5 wagon had dome light coming on in turns,wipers parking in weird spots and coming on randomly,random warning lights,alarm went insane even unhooked battery had to remove and smash it had it's own battery,doors wouldn't lock kept unlocking,screen kept cutting out,Crazy loud front end groaning randomly but everything was tight(Sounded like the Titanic hitting the iceberg) random warning messages disappearing. Got a few years out of it Guy I sold it to($400 all I ever did was crank sensor and oil) fixed everything then sludge killed the motor..... Just picked up a 99 9-3 convertible today guy was only asking $400. drove 2 hours back then drove all day never died but it has Saab issues like all my other ones. rear motor mount broken,antenna makes noise wont move,screen scrambled,when turning radio on or off warning light up for brake lights comes and goes(screen scrambled hard to read),blower motor switch dead guy bypassed and switch caught fire lol,random coolant smell no overheat or loss,top gets stuck and have to help it go down,handles like it's too heavy,weird side to side shake,shift knob loose spinning and reverse ring falling,seat knobs broken,back window broken,probably more gonna jack it up tomorrow check it out. Overall excellent for the price taped a bag on the rear window and gonna change motor mount oil,plugs,vac lines,get 3" DP/exhaust tune and use for weekend top down car.....

For anyone looking to buy a Saab 9-3, go check out the forums. You'll see that there are a lot of different problems coming up as these cars age. Let me school you up on some common issues Many electrical replacements need to be mated with a tech2, or reprogrammed with trionic tuning. Unfortunately ECU's on these cars are failing at an increasing rate, and the only options are other used ones. Under the hood you can expect to see leaking power steering / camshaft seals as well as brake booster and oil level sensor seals (among others). Coil packs are expensive and while the turbo's often blow a fair bit of oil, they fortunately don't appear to be particularly unreliable. That said you are always taking that chance with a turbo engine. Also it uses HID headlights which provide great light but are very expensive to replace. Mechanically, the springs fail which is unsafe and is one of the bigger suspension parts to replace on a car. Also the ball joints front and back are permanently affixed to the control arms, which are hydroformed aluminium. Aluminium control arms are great.. until you have to replace them ($$$). As with any older European car, the many bushings that provide that nice complaint ride will be starting to harden and crack. These tend to be one of the more expensive and unexpected costs people run into when purchasing older European cars. On the interior, many models are unable to install an aftermarket stereo due to the fiber optic canbus loop. Blower fan squealing is quite common. As are issues with the steering lock mechanism. Contrary to what many say, I did not find the seats all that comfortable. They were probably the flattest and hardest seats I had ever sat on, maybe there was something wrong with mine. I've had a couple 9-3's and as much as I wanted to like them, they truly where money pits. Of course everything is fixable if you have enough money, but if you are at all budget conscious you may want to think twice before rolling the dice on one of these. If you do buy one get the newest you can... and don't lose the keys!
@AutoAutopsy
@AutoAutopsy 5 лет назад
Springs are something that wear and would need to be replaced with time on any car. As are a fair amount of the other things you'd mention. My family has owned nearly a dozen Saabs of all models and type, and I'd have to disagree! :)
@shawnl7966
@shawnl7966 5 лет назад
Springs are one of the least wearing suspension items on a car. It sounds like you are not familiar with the issue of the springs actually cracking and breaking on the Saab 9-3's. I'm glad you're family has had good luck with their cars. I still wouldn't recommend this car to a budget conscious buyer.

In the UK second hand Saabs have always been cheap. Saab drivers traded their Saabs back to Saab. That was the case back in 1992 (?) when my dad traded his his first 900i five door for a 900 aero and in 1999 he changed to a new 95. He considered various options on both occasions including Lancia, Alfa, BMW, Volvo and Mercedes. The other dealerships offered him ridiculous terms for his trade-ins. So this phenomenon of low second hand values is nothing new. As for a rebadged Vauxhall/Opel, there's no comparison when it comes to build quality, and we now know that Saab engineer's refusal to adopt what they considered to be lower quality components from GM for their cars contributed largely to GM's decision to pull the financial plug. So was "over-engineering" their downfall? Maybe, look at Mercedes - many consider the 190 "Baby Benz" to be the last true Mercedes. Mercedes said themselves that it was deliberately over engineered, maybe as a strategy to get into the "small" car market. In the 1980's it worked, but after that I guess the finance people got more influential, which is why the A series is such utter s**t. VW went down the same road - just compare the build quality of a T4 transporter to that of its T5 successor. Sure the newer cars have lots more bells and whistles but no where near the same level of solidity (or reliability). Saab refused to follow that strategy and sadly paid the price... Just my half penny's worth. I currently still run my dad's 1999 Saab 95 2.0t saloon. I'm on my second 2001 VW T4 after a disastrous experience with a 2003 T5. The Saab will be going to my son (3rd generation Saabist) shortly as I'm looking to upgrade to a 2004 95 aero estate. And yes prices in the UK are very low - I'm budgeting between £900 and £1200. Totally ridiculous for a 150mph luxury monster like this one. I don't think prices will be this low forever. They are on the verge of gaining "classic" status - look at how prices of 900's and even 9000's are rising. Now is the time for a 95...
