Here's why Scotty Kilmer was wrong about 1.4 Chevy Sonic/ Cruze timing chain and underboost codes!

Forgot to mention if any of you out there need new catalytic converters for your chevy cruze that ZZPerformance has a catless downpipe and high flow catted mid pipe combo that gives you 12 extra horsepower while still keeping the check engine light off because they were smart enough to relocate the downstream oxygen sensor behind the second catalytic converter instead of in front of it! It will most likely go on sale on black Friday and hopefully I get one and make videos on it! Also here's the Scotty Kilmer white Chevy Sonic video from 1 month ago I'm referring to...
• Please Do NOT Buy a Ca...
Also here is a link to a video showing the loose timing chain guide under the valve cover causing a P0324 very similar to the P0325 code in Scotty Kilmers video!...

The whole Scotty Kilmer part aside, you made a ton of comments that were very insightful and relevant from the mindset of a mechanic that knows this engine. Some of your points on diagnosing symptom with an big picture view make total sense. Too many people just dig into the error codes.

Underrated video. Watched his video yesterday and almost replied to it. Guess the algorithm wanted to throw you my way. I have the exact issue you're speaking on. Clogged catalytic converter and a bad evap purge canister. After replacing the evap purge canister noise went away. Now just need to replace the converter

I know I’m prolly 5 months late, but did you try cleaning out the cat? If so, what’d you do/use? Was it successful? I had a “clogged” cat on a Sonic with the 1.8 engine. Cleaned it out with a can of Seafoam in the fuel tank and I also sprayed a whole can into the throttle body. Cleared it right up and has been good since. No CEL, no codes. Also runs a lot smoother since doing that.

what you are doing is what a real mechanic does. too many mechanics go down the "technician" route now. yes its helpful, but knowing what your looking and at and how it works is more important if you need to diagnose properly. one issue can look like several other issues and sometimes it needs hands on looking under the cover to see whats afoot..its a tough job being a mechanic, the general public dont realise this most of the time...they dont see the sweating the grunting, the swearing when fixing some of these things..there is rarely an easy job, cos you know its never going to be that easy...as an apprentice it was drilled home that you start from easy to hard when it comes to diagnosing issues....great video

I have owned turbo cars for years now so when i came across your video it definitely made more sense to me that you understand more of the mechanics point of view rather than an ECU tech. With me and my fiance being owners of a 200k mile 94' gmc g3500 definitely under stand gmcs design shortcomings, you cant start every diagnostic with bad mouthing a manufacturer until you actually open it up and fix the problem. Scotty did not and doesnt always do that and its sad. I hope you get recognition for this video. Keep on keeping on man

Daughter bought a Encore. Have that noise. Very loud. Not the solenoid. Think its a lifter. Saw another video about the timing chain guide. Pulled the cover. Sure enough the guide bolts were loose. Fixed that. Sound still there but a little bit quieter. However, when I changed the oil I found that it hadn’t been changed for what looks like 100k. I wish I had a picture of the filter. 🤮 Hoping to do a crankcase flush and clean things up a bit. Have to look into the turbo and cat issues. End of your video, that engine does not sound a lot better. It’s rattling like a pair of castonettes. Sounds just like mine!!😂. Hoping the flush helps. Watch Eric the Car Guy’s video on engine flushes though. Very good guy.

@@thomasmorris302 I love my sonic and all, but the valve cover and pcv system is hands down this engines achilles heel. both in reliability and performance. I have pushed then engine at 22psi for most of it's life, and blown 3 valve covers so far. the pcv system boost aside is prone to failure, but the worst thing about it is that if it fails under a load it will belch oil into the turbo, which can cause a lot of problems but also scared the living shit out of me several times over.

I've owned my 2011 1.8 cruze since new. Them boys always bragged how much better the 1.4 was. The 1.4 is dangerously underpowered to where I felt unsafe on the highway. Still have my 1.8 mt at 360,000km, just traded my 2015 1.4 sonic with 74,000km for a 2014 toyota venza. Gm should be put under for the garbage they are producing. Iam 39 Years old and have owed 2 pontiac sunbirds, oldsmobile alero, cadillac deville, cruze, sonic, 86 fiero gt which I still have. Iam done with gm. The cars are pure garbage now, plastic engines from China. Toyota all the way from here on out. My advice to anyone with a cruze or sonic either engine. If you don't like working on your cars, sell it asap.

I bought a 2016 Buick Encore with the 1.4T and it did indeed have a stretched chain. Got codes for camshaft / crankshaft correlation. Removed valve cover and had a wobbly chain on the side without the tensioner. I bought the kit on Amazon with water pump/timing cover and valve cover gaskets and did it all myself in 2 days with just a floor jack. All in all parts were ~$200. CAR HAD 87K Miles but maintenance was lacking. Also it sounded nothing like this sound in your video. You could clearly hear the chain smacking the side of the black when it came around. Especially when revving it up. Sidenote: Not sure if you know but the design of these engines was purchased by GM from daewoo (South Korean Automaker) and those didn't do well in the USA with daewoo pulling out of the US market in 02. I just dont think theyre the most reliable thing in the world with constant coolant leaks and common head-gasket failure

My car has makes noise when cold start and then goes away after about 30 seconds or so. I have no codes and car runs fine. Kinda sounds like an exhaust leak, but I’m not 100 percent that’s what it is will a bad timing chain do that? Wouldn’t a bad chain through a code? Hope I hear back from you thanks buddy great work.
@GadGetHackss
@GadGetHackss Год назад
To test if the noise is coming from the purge valve, simply remove the connector.. These usually make this noise and you can't do anything about it but to make it quieter you can put some engine oil in it using a syringe and it'll be as quiet as a brand new one. Of course if you have a check engine light then it's faulty.
@koreymayo8884
@koreymayo8884 Год назад
They make noise when they are bad and engine temp is warmed up and I don't think I even had a check engine light when mine was bad. I think it was bad around 80k miles.
@GadGetHackss
@GadGetHackss Год назад
@@koreymayo8884 When it becomes dry and dirty on the inside the noise gets louder..that doesn't mean it's bad so putting a lubricant inside helps clean and lubricate things and make it quieter..when it stops working and doing its job that's when the ECU triggers the check engine light.. usually causes small leak codes like P0456. Also sometimes the engine will shudder as if there is a misfire happening especially when the gas cap is opened and this is when the valve is stuck open and unmetered air is allowed into the system..so either way from my experience, Spraying a cleaner inside and then a lubricant will fix it for you and you don't have to replace it.

Scotty is comparing this to the 2.2 and 2.4 ecotechs which had timing chain issues because of lack of oil changes and non dexos oil. The oil monitor was set wrong on the 2.4 and the carbon from direct injection and clogged tensioner cause timing chain failure. The 1.4 is different in compression and the oil monitor is different as noted if you remove the valve cover and easyily tell if the chain is bad

I would say the Chevy trax 2017, reliability I would rate it 3.5 out of 5. It’s not that bad. At 65k miles I had to replace the turbo because it was leaking, also I have to replace the timing belt soon because of its mileage. However comparing it to like Toyota or Honda SUVs yes I would go those brands, chevy I would consider it if I where you, unless you want to find out yourself. From my experience I have a 1991 Toyota Camry with original 134k miles, just about a month ago a major leak happened on the oil pan gasket. I took it to my mechanic and he told me that there was a major leak not only in the gasket of the oil pan but also where the timing belt is at. Yes I had to pay 1,200$ to replace all that but if you look at reliability it took over 30 years for that to wear out. Lately there has been many people who’ve offered me 5,000$ for the Camry, I would never that vehicle go 😅So there you have it folks……Toyota and Honda vehicles are much reliable.
@koreymayo8884
@koreymayo8884 4 месяца назад
Yeah except certain Honda models have bad automatic transmissions and a few 4 cylinder toyota engines had piston oil return holes that were too small and caused massive oil burning for a few years, but Toyota, Honda, Mazda, and Subaru are the most reliable these past 10 years. And some Kia/Hyundai/and Genesis are good too depending on the model. A lot of Kia/Hyundai engine problems are actually from owners going way too long between oil changes. It has to do with the type of person that buys those vehicles. They buy a car that cost less than all other car brands and then don't spend money on proper maintenance on top of the fact that kia/Hyundai manuals already tell you to go 7500 miles for regular and 10000 miles for synthetic and then some people go twice as long as that further compounding the problem. Even with modern oils I still go by 3 to 4000 for regular and 5 to 6000 for high quality synthetic like mobil 1 because oil is cheap, engines are not and you can never change it too much.

@@koreymayo8884 yeah Im not against it just in no rush after replacing cracked head wasted timing guides and chain. Water pump thermostat, dropped oil pan and flush out sludge from the neglect.. it was never oil service properly, when a heater hose failed last owner drove it until it was bone dry and hot to the point of not able to run.. the rings cylinder walls crank all faired well. I revive this 1.4. I know it's not leaking oil coolant. No noise temp is good oil pressure is good is clean inside and out no leaks. EVAP rattle turbo leaks some oil into intake.. those can wait, why counts is been revived it runs great. It was a free car to my ole lady. I done enough for now... Lol.. I'll swap it and that turbo sooner or later. Just impress with results of the engine after what it was before.. these engines are designed well. I used to watch Scotty when he was in Texas he knows a lot for sure but the click bait for views type videos I have no interest in them like this is it I'm done see ya . You go to the video and it has nothing to do with what he was talking about it was just a click bait to get you to watch this video if you watch it for 30 seconds and he gets paid if you're subscribed. I also seen him one time avoid this car like the plague and then like a year later let me tell you how this car is the best one to have in the world????? Sorry Scotty know 30 seconds tonight.

Worse thing you can do with a turbo equipped engine is let it sit and idle. That turbo needs air flowing over it to keep cool and sitting there running like you are doing really heats them up. Yes exhaust flows through that impeller full time.
@itz_premium
@itz_premium 8 месяцев назад
I was advised by a mechanic that once I get to where I am going, to sit and idle for 30-60 seconds to let everything cool off a bit before shutting the car down. Especially if it was a long stretch of highway driving right before. Is this bad to do? I don't sit and idle for 5 minutes or let it idle on a cold start except until the RPMs die down, but merely 30-60 seconds once I get to my destination just to give everything a second to cool off.. is that wrong of me to do? I have a 2012 1.4 turbo

Every word Scotty Kilmer says, take it with many grains of salt. Scotty blows his own horn and pretty much rides on other mechanic’s knowledge. Has anyone noticed that he doesn’t show any complex repairs on his videos. It is always shade tree mechanical repairs. There is a reason why because he doesn’t have the knowledge.
