Here's Why The Driving Age Is 16 In Most States. Should It Be? - Cheddar Explains

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for teenagers in the United States. 16 to 17-year-old drivers are almost twice as likely to die in a car crash than drivers who are just two years older. So why is the minimum driving age still 16 in 44 states? It’s actually a highly contested subject.

The issue isn’t age. The issue is driver training. A poorly trained driver is more likely to get into an accident regardless of age, and a poor driver with little experience is highly likely to get into an accident. Training is more important than maturity. In motorsports we have tons of drivers who are younger than 16 and racing safely because they are taught that driving is dangerous and should be taken seriously. Something like this can be seen in the aviation industry. It takes hundreds of hours to get licensed to fly a turbo prop, but if you’re in the Air Force they throw you in a turbo prop after very little training. That’s because the students are trained properly. It’s all about training, not age. Practice doesn’t make perfect. Practicing the right techniques and the right things make you better at something.

As I am glad you mentioned, 18 year old drivers have had 2 years more driving experience than 16 year olds - if the driving age is raised I would expect 18 year old crash rates to increase. The insurance argument is a terrible - families can choose for their teens to not drive until 18 if they do not wish to pay the insurance, and, coming from an Australian, insurance prices in the US are fucked anyway and need more price controls/regulations. Here, I am covered with my parents insurance until I drive unsupervised, without additional costs. Only difference is that the cost payed by us in the event of a crash is slightly higher.

I sorta started driving when I was around 8. We had an old Volvo without a passenger airbag so I could sit in the front and steer while my dad did the gas and brake. Only did that on minor roads when there wasn't anyone else around. First time I drove fully was a little after I turned 16, though I was a little over 18 before I got my full licence and drove solo. I was never much of a speed demond, parents usually told me to drive faster when they were with me. Fastest I have ever driven was 95 MPH when I was maybe 20 or 21, it was on a big open highway and I only did it for a few seconds as it was pretty scary. These days I basically just go with the flow of traffic on the highway, and the speed limit on surface streets. The exception is I95 South of Richmond VA, as most people go like 90-100, but my current car starts to feel unstable from turbulence around 87 MPH, not to a horrible extent, but enough to make me grip the wheel tighter then is comfortable.

Age doesn't always take into account, it's the drivers training and on hands learning that matters. Teens are dying in accidents mainly because they get in over their heads driving recklessly without knowing how to control the car if something happens. If I haven't learned to drive with my father and grandfather, I would have certainly crashed by now, it is especially important to know the limits of your car (whether it is RWD, FWD or AWD), as these factors among many others are important to how each different vehicle handles. As a 19 year old, I like Georgia’s policy. At 15, you can get your learner’s permit after passing a written exam. In order to go to the next step up, you have to have your permit for one year, and then pass a driving test. During that year, you have to have 40 hours of supervised driving including six at night as well as 30 hours of a class and six hours with a driving instructor. If you don’t take the class, you have to wait until you’re 17. After you do all that age pass your driving test, the next step is Class D. During this time, you can drive alone, but there are certain restrictions. You can’t drive between 12-5 AM, and during the first six months, you can’t have anyone other than immediate family. For the second six months, you can only have one passenger. After that, you can only have three passengers. Once 18, you can get a Class C or normal driving license.

The minimum age to have a driver's license may need to go up but at the same timeif it does go up like you guys said it would make it harder for a minor to be able to maintain a job. I think teenagers should be allowed to learner's permit at 16 years old often 15 and 1/2 years old actually which I remember being the case for mebut for increased added safety they should not be allowed to get a full-on license until they're 18.

There are tons of local jobs, you can walk, bicycle or use public transportation, and still the main priority should be school, not a job.

Germany if you make your license with 18 you pay more for your whole life. If you get your license before and be supervised by an experienced driver you get better insurance ratings for your whole life.

The minimum age should stay the same because experience makes everyone adapt to driving over time. Think about this as an example for something else. For example, I'm studying IT, which involves learning a lot about how computers work. I know how computers worked since I was 10 years old. When I started college at 19, I knew a lot for stuff from the past, which has already helped me in certain classes. Other students that never touched computer software or compound have been struggling since they never had experience with them. Also, look at some IT jobs online. You may see the requirements saying some need an x amount of years doing this. My point here is that, like some said, it's the experience that matters, not the age. I got my license at age 16 and I'm so glad I got to drive earlier since I had more experience driving and understand the rules of the road better.

how many compulsory hours did you do in theory and practice in driving school? Driving in the city, out of town and on the highway by day and by night, even if there remain some elements that you ask yourself "how did they pass the exams", it is not better to improve the learning system when driving, I have made nonsense, like "drifting" in a square with a front-wheel drive and manual gearbox on snow days (which lately rarely happens where I live), but those stunts helped me to avoid going into a car and into the ditch because of the black ice , only to discover at that point 10 cars had gone off the road, moral counts both the severe exams and the experience to be a good driver. Sorry for the long text and maybe grammar error

Again the main issue is that USA has terrible public transport. Having a car should not be a requirement to get a round.

If we raise the driving age, whatever that driving age becomes will then have all the accidents. It’s about driving experience. I know teenagers that drive better than full grown adults. As long as people are educated behind the wheel, we’ll be alright.

What is strange to me is that almost no one seems to be seriously proposing implementing a driver training program that starts off with driving in a simulator, to gain some sort of experience without needing to be exposed to an associated risk of death or injury. Honestly, I don't see why this training could not be made available to all kids from age 12 onwards. Then even 15-16 year olds presumably could have much lower crash rates (especially if permit eligibility was conditioned on recent performance in the simulator), but it seems no one wants to study this.

Should address more of the car-centric culture of USA, with public transportation and lower fares for students, there is no need for cars, also, since they are usually healthier than older people they can walk or bike more.

Problem is how are 16 year olds able to get to school and work without a licence? The US public transport is rubbish compared to where I live in the UK.

While it is significantly worse. There are obviously mechanisms in place to provide transportation to schools for those that don't have a car or are younger than 16.

My first couple thousand miles were in an old slow banger, even if I wanted to impulsively speed or race around the block I couldn't. 0 to 60 took like 20 seconds and you could forget about cornering at speed. Get your teen a slow car with a tiny engine, not a mustang.

It’s all a matter of proper training. The testing needed to get a license in the US is too lax. All I had to do was drive around an empty lot and parallel park. It should be much more difficult to get a license. Things like highway driving, and inclement weather should be tested. The number of people who fail to keep right or pass on the right is infuriating. Unfortunately things have to be lax since driving is a necessity in most of the nation. We need more public transport, cycling infrastructure and walkable cities.

In Indiana you get a permit at 15 and at 16 and 3 months you get a license but you need 50 hours of driving with a permit, 6 hours with a driving instructor, and a 2 week Drivers ed course. That's a fuck ton of experience before you get a license, don't change it

Should the driving age be 16 in "most" states? Probably not. Now, should be the driving age be 16 in FLORIDA?!?!?! Hell. Fucking. NO! Holy crap is it insane to me, even as someone who was born and raised in Florida that our driving age is that low. Not to mention how useless and minuscule the Driver's Education program is here. Hell, I myself knew very well and acknowledged that was a completely shitty driver when I first started. It was dangerous, I had several close calls for car collisions. My take on it: the driving age should be raised and/or the requirements should be more stringent. Driver's education (BOTH on the road, AND off the road) should be more involved.

I'm 16 and just passed drivers code in France, will be taking driving lessons for 20 hrs and then driving 3000km with my parents, and hopefully obtaining my driver's license at 18. Maybe I'm biased because I have practically no driving experience but thinking that every kid my age, along with their lack of responsibility could drive in the US kind of freaks me out lol
