IF the issue is the oil control rings, which it probably is with a 2016 5 cylinder, do a 2 day piston soak with Delco 10-3015. Mine has 106K miles, was burning about a quart every 500 miles. 1800 miles after the soak, absolutely NO oil has burned off. I performed the soak when I did the timing belt; rotating the crank 1/4 forward, 1/4 back every 4 hours. Spray the remainder out with compressed air, put it all back together and enjoy the smoke show that lasts about 20 minutes. Give it a try. The most you have to lose is your time and $40 for the cleaner.

It takes more than a seat to make a car. Aren't cars supposed to transport you from point A to B and be dependable? Cars should not have simple things that costs $$$$$$$ to replace don't require a second mortgage to fix, Volvos are getting to almost worse than British cars of the 60's, 70's, and 80's to own.

VW is the same, the PCV will cause oil usage. If a timing belt is high quality, there is no problem. My son brought a Jetta diesel with around 150,000 miles. As best we could determine, the timing belt was the original belt. Naturally, the guy we bought it from signed a statement that there was no warranty, but we had a 200 mile warranty on just the belt. If a diesel can go that far on a belt, and it still LOOKED good, then belts are fine. The problem with timing belts is there is no warning at all. With a chain you might get get some rattling before it goes, timing belt is instant fail.
@MrTheHillfolk
@MrTheHillfolk 11 месяцев назад
Vw guy first and gen tech second. The belt changes are important,but you'd be shocked what you can get away with, as you've found out. Anyway,at work a few months back I went to a no start call. It had a 2.3 ford powering the unit ,dated like 81-82 or so and had about 1200 hours on it. Reason for the no-start? Timing belt broke. Glad it's a non-interference engine ,but that's beside the point. I'm hoping the new belt I installed will last 40yrs like the original one did.

I own a 2011 S60 but with the turbo inline 6 and it's a totally different beast. It still has some FoMoCo parts but way more reliable than the T5s. I have a 2009 Volvo C70 (hard top convertible) with the T5 motor and it runs like a champ. We have 58k miles on it and it spends winters in my garage (I live in Chicago), but on cool evenings and long trips its our car of choice - and it has satellite radio which is well worth it when driving out to the badlands and devils tower where there are no radio stations for miles (made that trip a few times). So far, the only expenses other than oil changes were A/C died (over $4k but covered by warranty I bought with the car so I just paid $250 and one of the hydraulic lines for the convertible top. Getting the line replaced (not covered by warranty) was nearly $1500 primarily because of labor to remove the top to replace it (It was leaking hydraulic fluid into the trunk). Anyway, if you get the option of warranty for < $2k for this car I'd get it, cause when something goes really wrong, its $,$$$.
@miniaddict4534
@miniaddict4534 11 месяцев назад
Your car only has 55k miles and it already needed the AC replaced? Not even Hyundai is that unreliable. You must not have owned many other cars because that right there is still unacceptable. I used to own a Nissan Altima that had 190k miles and all it needed were new valve cover gaskets at 180k miles. Nearly every car manufacturer can guarantee trouble free ownership up to 200k miles except for Volvo.
@johnnelson5083
@johnnelson5083 11 месяцев назад
@@miniaddict4534 I believe if you listened to Scottys video he mention A/C as a weak part for Volvo. As a Swede myself with family still in Liatorp (I've been back twice in the last 6 years) I don't think I ever ran the A/C in the rental cars there. The T5 motor purrs nicely and the car is a convertible, aka, I put the top down more than the A/C on (and that might have contributed to the A/C's demise).
@miniaddict4534
@miniaddict4534 11 месяцев назад
@@johnnelson5083 I listened to his video, and you’re right, he did say that. What’s your point? Because my point is that is unacceptable. If Volvo wants to sell cars around the world, they should make sure they’re capable in every environment. As an American, I’m subjected to extreme hot and cold temperatures along with severe weather. I have a 21 year old Nissan XTerra that I can drive in the middle of the dessert in 110 F weather with the AC set to maximum. It has 240k miles and it’s never had the problems you describe. I have 4 other cars from different brands that I can name that are more reliable than Volvo.
@Wizard6
@Wizard6 10 месяцев назад
Rule of thumb, If anything goes wrong on a Volvo and it's not under warranty and you are not a fearless do it yourself type , buying parts and doing the work yourself it's $$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for just about anything. Happiest 2 days of your life for a Volvo owner is day you buy the car and the day you sell the car. Lots of $$$$$$$ between getting "little things " repaired.
@johnnelson5083
@johnnelson5083 10 месяцев назад
@@Wizard6 Honestly, aside from the A/C (warranty) and the hydraulic hose (not warranty), the only other expense on that car has been 4 Michelin pilot 4s and oil changes. Because it has sat radio, its our preferred car for longer trips (and it gets better mileage than our SUV)

It's entirely the fault of unrealistic environmental regulations. If they just made modern engines without trying to eke out every 1/10th of a MPG they can, they would be great, but they're trying to save 2 MPG and all they're accomplishing is putting more cars in the junkyard and more waste. It's a completely illogical industry now.

Why Ill keep my old SAAB. Real timing chain, easy maintenance parts still available and affordable not a lot of tech either! Stopped buying Volvos after 2000. Rolling piles of junk just like all Fords and BMW's. Volvos cheapening of interior parts and the crap ABS system that would sh*t the bed putting the car in limp mode with no warnings no thanks....

Any car will turn into a POS and start having Oil Burning problems at about 90K to 120K if you follow the dealers recommendation to only change oil at 10k or once a year oil change . That's the minimum maintenance and it gets things carboned and wears out the oil sealing of the rings. Changing your oil at 5k or less will save you lots of problems. Have you ever heard a mechanic say, "your car developed this problem because you changed the oil and filter too much or too often"? Answer is NO! I've heard horror stories where a person never changes the oil or checks the oil and turns the car into a papers weight at 35-40k miles. The oil turns into sludge /tar and stops lubricating result $$$$$$$.

Actually no, 2015 they didn’t meet the mpg requirements and the engineering team found a way to get more mpg by using low friction rings. So when the car ages it will eventually burn oil. But there’s a lawsuit and now they are fixing the problem by replacing the pistons and rings 😂

Every car manufacturer on the globe hires engineers to take as much costs as they can out of each part. Change metal to plastic, increase tolerances, change bearings to bushings, use potted metal, they all get a bonus on how much costs they took out. That's why cars are unreliable. It will get worse.

Hello volvo tech here, this is very common with these. Our shop would be backed up with these sitting in the lot for months before they'd get repaired.. its not only these but the XC90s and other SUVs also have this issue.. The way it works is, if they haven't had alot come in in a month, they will replace it for free regardless of miles, if warrantee sees too many of them in a month, youll get turned down or pay full price. The fact they are going all electric is hilarious, every single "YES EVERY SINGLE VOLVO ELECTRIC CAR" has issues. We get XC90S that have batteries that die on the lot.. hell every electric car on lot has battery issues because the car is always searching for wifi connection so the car is always drawing power. We get full power failures at times on brand new cars, its sad, Stay AWAY from volvo unless its a pree 2005

Volvo used to build great cars, but something happened and they started building junk around 2010. Volvo with turbo is guarranteed to be trouble. Wait until you have to change a water hose and find out that a Volvo water hose is over $100.00 because of the special fittings on one end. " Volvo" transmission fluid is over $ 40.00 a quart. The PCV valve change out requires you to remove the intake manifold. lots of luck on that. $$$$! unless you are a dedicated do it your self person and fearless. After working on my daughter in law's Volvo, I will never own one.
