Unmanaged switches are amazing for the way you plug them in and they just work. No fussing no nothing, just works. My only advice is to draw out ur network as he does and know how many ports at what speed you need before you start shopping for one. Great video, I like that you include networking content.
more networking content with NAS systems please, i didnt quite fully understand this video but im new to owning a synology nas so has opened my eyes to possibilities
A couple comments. First your diagram lists everything as GBe... it should be GbE. B=Byte, b=bit. Second, why are the two NASes connected with both of their ports to the switch? Device-to-switch connections can only utilise a single link. You're not going to get a 5GbE connection by using both ports.

I bought the D-link DMS-106xt for my switch. A bit pricey but it does have a single 10gb port and 5 x 2.5g ports.. Later down the road when I can afford a 8 x10gbe port switch then I can expand my network without worries. But as of right now, 10g and even 25/40g is just too expensive for my wallet.
If you plug both LAN cables from the NAS to the switch, you NEED to configure "Port Teaming" to aggregate the port speed. Otherwise, it will use one or the other and not both!.
*BUYER BEWARE* This is 2.5Gb each port, so,if you want to choose a different brand or want more port, pay close attention to what each port is capable of handling. Looking at some other switches claiming 10Gb ports, but when you read the description, that is only two out of X ports with the rest only 1Gb. So be careful and read what the switch can actually do. I went looking for an alternative as I want more than five ports.
@@theTechNotice yes, but I wanted a 10x2.5G or 16x with at least half at 2.5G And what I found was, when you go from 5 to 10 or greater, most list only 2x2.5G and the remaining ports at 1G. It is nigh impossible to find what I needed. The title leads one to believe they (or most) are 2.5G when that is not true when reading the detailed description. So my comment was, if anyone wants more than a 5 port switch; which you’ve shown here, be careful and don’t wind up with less 2.5G ports than one intended to get.
Unmanaged switch, so you don’t need drivers? Serious, have you ever seen a switch that required drivers? Unmanaged means you can’t do things like creating V-Lan (Virtual Lans to separate network traffic) or trunking ports (combining ports to present as 1 fast port). Managed switches will have a built in web interface (or terminal via a serial port) to configure settings. You connect both NAS ports to the switch. I highly doubt that this actually works. Your switch and NAS need to support trunking for that. Maybe your NAS does support it, if it’s an expensive one. But your switch definitely doesn’t support it. Too bad you didn’t show the results of your network setup.
It depends on how many device you want to connect to either the internet or each other. If they cannot be connected or connected fast enough to all the ports on your router, then that is. Good reason for a switch. There are 1gb switches available if your router has only one 1gb port and you want to connect more devices at that speed, or if you can’t plug all your devices into your router at the same time. I'm new to networking so I apologize if this is a dumb question I am in the process of figuring out how to wire my new house with ethernet finally starting from scratch properly I'm interested in getting a new Switch with cat6a cabling I understand getting a two and a half gig switch however is it worth getting a two and a half gig switch let's say a 24 Port switch or larger if my internet service provider gives me 1 GB download and 1 GB upload I don't get 2 GB or faster is it still worth buying a two and a half gig switch?
Rarely are you going to hit 1Gbps transfer rate in a daily basis.. save the 6a for the longest running node or from the ONT to your office.. and go with Cat6 for everything else cat6 cables with current protocols are good for 5Gbps. Regarding the 2.5 Switch it just has to have a couple ports... as long as it has enough transfer rate good for most of the 1Gbps devices working simultaneously you are good to go.

I think this setup isn't really necessary in this case. There is only one usefull 2.5Gb connection and that's the NAS to Editing PC. In this case you can add the switching functionality to the NAS by doing direct connections to the two PCs. Just add a cheap NIC to have Internet connectivity.
