The leap Metallica made from their debut album (Kill 'Em All) to this album is insane. It's like going from building a well-made grocery store as your first project to building the Empire State Building.
Then, after a delay of rebuilding from St Anger, they slowly recover as they release Death Magnetic - 72 Seasons ( imo the last 3 albums have been pretty good, but no where near their prime of 1983-1989)
It is interesting, but also the facts that it was a last minute addition to the album that James doesn't... appreciate because they half-assed the song
Escape is a good song. Trapped Under Ice too. My problem is with Ktulu, I think it's the worst song talking between the classic Metallica albums. (Kill em All - Black Album)
@@KAlexanderTheGreat yeah I remember watching a video of James singing it live he hated every second of it ! Idk sometimes artists can't appreciate their work because of the high standard they hold for themselves. And I get that, but the song has held up well for its age. And I love it I know I'm not the only one.
as a drummer, that breakdown with no instruments but the drums just blasting ass i my favorite thing of the song! holy shite lars was savage back then!
@sophie W ikr? I love his energy and that he research every song. He's so positive. Glad that he's open about different genres. When I was young,we had pirate cassette tapes ,no internet and we could just imagine the meaning behind the lyrics. I'm from Croatia and we listened to foreign bands and we didn't have the access to any info about any tracks, only good all stories from mouth to mouth 😂
He's reacted to fade to black as well, but was watching a Saving Private Ryan video for some reason lol. I hope he listens to it without the video so he can focus on the music
@@DarkReturns1 I said the same thing about One. He reacted to the music video both times. I was hoping he would react to song only when he did the whole album. The video has too much movie dialogue in it that takes away from the song.
For me, it's Metallica's 3rd best behind AJ4A& MoP. When you say Metal, if you mean Thrash, then you're definitely right. I'd put in 7-10 in my top 10thrash, but if you mean just Metal, for me that muddies th water too much! I have to think about those old Sabbath, Dio, Priest, Savatage, etc, etc..records & it makes by brain hurt! Thrash Metal though, easy top 10!🍻
Trapped under ice is probably up there with blackened and master of puppets for me. It by far their thrashiest track, and a criminally underrated track
We all go through a Metallica phase. So I love this Edit: Its so cool seeing these replies. As a 13 year old who got into Metallica when I was 8, these bring me so much joy
It hits me probably once or twice a year and I'll go on yet another binge through the pre-Black stuff. I imagine that'll keep repeating for the rest of my life lol
5 years ago upon only hearing Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters, a work buddy let me borrow his original 1984 CD of this and was my first full Metallica album experience and as soon as I heard this song, I never heard anything like it and the obsession began
I first heard this back in 1985... i wish you could have heard music back then... what was considered heavy at the time... then hear this for the first time... Fight fire with fire is still my number one favorite song considering I was born in the early 70's and grew up in the height of fear of an all out nuclear attack 😣😥😮😰😲🤤😨😵😱💀☠
@@Todrick451 If yall actually consider yourselves true Metallica fans, you would realize that St. Anger is actually a pretty good album but yall are only fans when it suits your best interest unfortunately. People actually said Death Magnetic was trash it was literally one of Metallica's HIGHEST SELLING ALBUMS of all time. This is why Metallica fans annoy the hell outta me.
@@paulpv7 alr I said I think i don’t know their birthdates why would I I’m not some Internet fan girl that stalks all of the bands she likes and knows ever fucking detail(all I know is the year and they turned 21 that year) not saying u r one just I have some exercises
it was only just over a year ago, i’m 15 years old, and the first songs i heard from Metallica were in this order: Enter Sandman, Master of Puppets, then Fight Fire With Fire. Like, i mean enter sandman and master of puppets were absolutely amazing, but when i heard fight fire with fire i was absolutely mindblown. that song was the first really thrash metal song i wver heard. fight fire with fire still gets me today in terms of it’s raw power and thrashiness.
Bro, one of the best double bass lines by Lars. Most people think of One but this line has so much consistency needed and is much more prevalent than in One. Also it’s basically a drum solo at the same time.
Alex! Something to keep in mind when reviewing this album: Ride the lightning ('84), Master of puppets ('86), and ...And justice for all ('88) form a trilogy of sorts. On each album the first song starts with a calm but misleading instrumental before blasting away 100mph (Fight fire..., Battery, Blackend). After this each album has a lengthy, kick-ass title track (6min, 8min, 10min). The fourth song on each album again starts slowly, kind of sounds like a ballad at first, but then speeds up towards an impossible guitar solo at the end (Fade to black, Sanitarium, One). On an LP (vinyl) format these songs are the last ones on the A-side of the album (Justice might have been a double LP, so in that case last track on the B-side). Also, each album contains an instrumental (Call of Ktulu, Orion, To live is to die) that's among the longest on the album (9min, 8min, 10min). Some additional things to point out. Master of puppets and Justice both finish with some of the fastest songs in the bands catalog (Damage Inc., Dyers Eve), while Ride the lightning ends with the instrumental. Ride the lightning and Master of puppets have tracks that are clearly about the Cthulhu mythos (Call of Ktulu, The thing that should not be), whereas Justice has not. Also, the first two albums have a perfect number of songs (8), but Justice has an unpleasant number of 9. All amazing tracks though! Anyway, cheers! Keep up the good work! ps. Something for us metal historians to keep in mind: Iron Maiden made a "trilogy" of their own with Powerslave ('84), Somewhere in time ('86) and Seventh son of a seventh son ('88). The last album being the most progressive of the bunch, same with Metallica. I think it's safe to say that both bands were in their creative peak at this time.
@@booeyc Agreed. Death Magnetic and Beyond Magnetic are so good, it is a shame that they get overlooked by those who say that everything Metallica did after their 1st four albums suck/complain about them not returning to their original thrash metal sound.
You can't really go wrong with anything from this album, but yes... Great song. For me. Creeping death is my personal favorite. Die, by my hand as I creep across the land killing first born man. This whole album is a masterpiece.
My introduction to Metallica many many yrs ago,iv been a massive fan ever since.and still now im clocking on 47 yrs old I still drive and headbang like mad when I here this great thrash and always will be
Your lyrical analysis skills are clearly honed from your Hip Hop background, but it's been cool watching your music (as a whole) appreciation skills improve. It's clear that you really get it, from the way your head nod changes with different aspects of the song and the way you react to certain skills the instrumentalists are doing. Keep growing and keep ROCKIN', dude! 🔥🤘🏽🔥🤘🏽
I somehow talked my mom into buying this cassette for me when I was in junior high. I put this cassette in my radio - that had a deck. I was so disappointed for the first 15 seconds. Now probably my favorite album of all times.
And it looks like we’re going to experience another one, this time with both Russia and (especially) China. (If anyone hasn’t been paying attention to these developments, you really should.)
Hell yes. International relations were on a knife's edge in the early 80s. The original cowboy diplomacy. GWB was nothing but a sand kicking copy cat, the Gipper pushed the soviets just hard to enough to make them fall apart but not quite enough for the nukes to fly. Russia related stuff was serious back then, not just some political witch hunt.
Dude! Now you know why I love Metallica. This was the first song I ever heard from them! And I was hooked! Can’t wait for you to hear the rest of the album!! You’re going to love it!!!
Honestly I wouldn’t be mad if he reacted to the studio version. Sure the live is amazing, but the studio version is a different sound than I got from his live react video.
I think he already reacted to For Whom the Bell Tolls, but I believe it was the live version. It will be cool to see him react to the studio version though ngl.
My buddy made me listen to this when I was about 12. Was my first foray out of hair metal bands and into heavy metal. We used to just listen to Fight Fire with Fire and Ride the Lightning over and over for a month. Then we finally listened to the rest of the album.
@@JJJ-014 haha nice. My parents had one of the old stereos with the big wooden speakers. I would blast this so loud the windows rattled. I learned how to play guitar listening to Metallica and Pantera.
I always loved in the chorus how the guitars would be doing the "fight fire with fire" along with James, then again on the outro. One of my favorites off the album.
My favourite album. They were still so young and brimming with raw power and angst!! This for me was the evolution and birth of Metallica from the garage band of kill em all 🤘
My favourite metallica album. Has the most melodic and most feeling songs without being tooooo technical but still epic. Riffs are incredible and kirks solos are spot on. Every song is epic and ktulu is by far my favourite instrumental
My god does this man need to react to some of their live performances! Listening doesn’t do it justice. I saw this song in person and HOLY FUCKIN HELL!
This album has a consistent sound that makes me picture lightning or electricity flowing through the sound. Like its been charged up and has voltage. I cant explain it but the album keeps that throughout
This album is the most atmospheric sounding one they've done and it's fun as hell to play on guitar. It's got great emotion and really rockin' riffs. Every song has its own feeling and it's just a great masterpiece. It's fun watching you react and I'm craving the next one. Enjoy, Alex.
I'll never forget about 10 years ago, I gave my middle school dance DJ the CD to Ride The Lightning and had him play this song to prank the school and everyone left the dance floor, (Oh well, their loss). A memory my friends and I will never forget! 😂😂
So, what you are saying, from a legal perspective, using the teachings of Fight Fire With Fire would probably not win us any legal cases? Interesting....
I have been a fan since the garage days..i was blessed to be able to meet Club Burton in Charleston,WV in 1986 when they opened for OZZY it was the best concert I've ever Been too. Clif was a great guy..he is missed to this day
ALEX, you're starting to have the need of listening a full album. A concept that it seems has been lost, somehow. Keep it going. What a ride this is going to be...
Love it man. Excited for the next title track song. Wait till you hear The solo on that one. This whole album is gonna be a journey. Excited for this one for sure!
I was 11 or 12 when I first heard this album. My brother picked me up at school and put this cassette in and said tell me what you think. I was blown away when this song kicked into high gear
Every Tallica intro in the ye 'ol day sounded like a godsend of a musical mastery This gives you a rising emotion with a slow build up and then the nukes come in PURE DESTRUCTION!!!
One of my favourite tracks . Always was a fan of the heavier stuff they put out. Ride the Lightning , Master of puppets, disposable hero's , Fight Fire with Fire , Battery , Dyers Eve, Shortest Straw , One, Blackened , you name it lol can't get enough of these tracks . There so epic
Yup...back when Lars cared and tried and grew as a player. That high James voice and his galloping rhythm playing. Face melting solo...IMO this is where Metallica became what they would be known as.
