I remember when i was looking into buying my first car at 19 years old and ended up with a clean 1 owner 06 S65, and I clearly remember how many people said id go broke fixing it yet im still waiting for something to actually break before replacing it, regular maintenance isnt as bad as most would assume and its cheaper than replacing something from lack of maintenance

I don't care how much the ABC suspensions cost to replace. This car is going to be mine. ;)

I owned a 2003 CL55 for about 6 years. I wanted one since I was 17 and when I turned 26, I could afford a quality low mileage example. These cars are a labor of love no matter what year/miles you go with. They will keep you up at night. I dealt with all the ABC bullshit and other various electrical gremlins that come with these things, but looking back I would do it all again. I learned a lot about maintaining/fixing cars and how various systems work. When the car was functioning properly, it really had seriously impressive performance for such a big car and there's just something magical about the old Mercedes coupes. If you are considering a W215 of any kind, don't try to daily the car even if you live where the roads are perfect and if you do decide to daily the car, budget about $3500-$5K for maintenance per year at a good indie to keep it running right. It can be done, but like my man said...you gotta pay the cost to be the boss, but if you pay that cost, then you'll be the biggest boss in one of these, no doubt.

I have 100,230 miles on my 2005 S600 V12 Twin Turbo, so far I've spent $2,000 on the Tandem Pump replacement. Don't buy a rebuilt one trust me on this! I bought new front rotors from O.E. and they were $220 for the pair, put some ceramic pads on their and I was under $300 total for that job. Pads cost me $17 on Amazon lol. Coil packs were also replaced by the previous owner i.e. dealer. The Tandem Pump high pressure hose, or power steering hose was replaced also. It cost $320 just for the hose! So there's no getting around that. You can flush the ABC fluid out yourself just use a Turkey Baster and get a bowl. Replace it with CHF Hydraulic Oil and you're good. That said its a joy to drive and getting to 150mph+ is no problem! Find a good mechanic and Shop around for your parts and you'll love it like I have these past 2 years!

Awesome video, Alex! I actually have an '05 SL65 myself, which I've owned for just shy of 4 years. I looked for about a year to find a nice one with a good service history and a specific color combination (silver with red interior). I got it with 20k on it, now has 38k. I've only done basic maintenance so far (brakes of course, ALL fluids including the ABC, etc) along with some Renntech goodies, and it's been trouble free so far. The best advice I can give to anyone is to actually drive the cars if you own one, as there's no doubt in my mind things like the ABC components don't cope well with sitting... exercising them is a good thing!

And I was waiting for the Alex-score at the end :-( The CL65 is my dream car - luxury, hand assembled V12, 4 seats, ample trunk space. The reality is that I had to "settle" for an 04 E55K...so I'm only shy 4 cylinders :-)

Just bought a 2007 S65 AMG and when I got home I wondered to myself “what have I done?!” But videos like this have given me the confidence to plunge headlong into enjoying it and tackling all the preventative maintenance myself.

I absolutely love the humor and dig at Doug Demuro. I always enjoy your witty humor with a nice blend of great information. All I would suggest to you as a prior Mercedes Benz tech is that most people that are interested in buying an ABC suspension Mercedes and fixing it themselves with FCP Euro parts, needs mechanical instructions. The breakdown of costs between factors is great but if I'm personally going to attempt to do this job myself, why not provide the "nuts and bolts" repair procedure so we can see first hand how to accomplish this? Your channel is very successful and one of my favorites so I comment a lot. But in my opinion, you would easily surpass Doug Demuro' s numbers if the ACTUAL repair was performed and the video created for us to reference first hand. All other MB channels focusing on these issues skip over this point. I was hoping you would outshine them all by showing us the repairs. Great video.

I bought an ‘07 s600 with lots of maintenance records and have had zero problems in almost a year. The key is flushing the abc system regularly, replace the filter too. And service the trans regularly. Great video!

Love your videos! I have a 97 BMW 750IL with a V12. It still runs and looks great inside and out. Several months ago my left rear strut spring mount failed. The car was equipped with hydraulic “EDC” struts that are about $1000 each. As much as I love the car, it wasn’t worth it (it has 225,000). So I DIY’d a fix. I replaced the EDC struts with new standard struts( Sachs struts and Bilstein springs). I’ve never done much more than change a tire before this but had to try. As far as the hydraulic lines, I clamped them, cut, then used a 2” tight thread stainless steel hex bolt and threaded it into the cut tubing. Then cinched it with hose clamps. I kept a close eye on leaks and the power steering fluid (they are on the same line) and so far so good. Not something I would’ve done when the car was newer! But we need to keep these amazing cars from the scrap heaps!! Best to all!

I own a 2005 W220 S65 with just 37000 miles on it, and I know this: If you're not one step ahead of ANY breakdown or malfunction, you're going to wind up robbing a bank to cover your workshop expenses. Keyword: Maintenance!!!!

Great vid, as always. You forgot motor mounts though. Like with the 55k's, the torque from the V12TT's can destroy them pretty quickly depending on how you drive. And some of the older M275 cars had horribly designed motor mounts that required you to drop the subframe or remove the steering rack and downpipes to get to their top bolts. Or if you're not a contortionist or have large hands, pulling the engine might just be easier (I believe that's what the WIS calls for anyway). Much harder and more expensive to work on than the 55's (with air suspension), but no one can deny these 65's, even at 10+ years old, are just amazing cars. Perfect blend of opulence and supercar speed, especially when tuned.

Great video. As a proud owner of a 2006 S65 AMG, I have a channel with a few different videos about the car. The most expensive quote from the dealer for me was like $6k to change out the radiator and radiator fan. Genuine Mercedes parts cost me $1200 and maybe a whole day work. Replacing all 24 spark plugs I got a quote from Mercedes for $1200. Cost me $240 with genuine mercedes plugs and a few hours of work. My keyless remotes stopped working, Mercedes quoted me over $2k to replace the antenna. Found a used one on ebay for $30 and it has been working great for over a year! Recently, I changed out the 2 front hydraulic struts and upper and lower control arms for a total of $1400. I can't even imagine what the dealer would have charged.

I pretty much love all AMGs, except the ones that have the V-12, 6.3 liter engines, which are not nearly as bulletproof as the 5.4 liter engines. The fact is, I prefer my AMG, a CL 55 AMG. It is a 2003 and yes, it is a Kompressor. It runs great, came with every single maintenance record, well actually every single record about the car. From the moment it rolled off the ship from Germany, until I bought the car, the prior owner had saved EVERY single piece of paper that was ever associated with the car. He had them in both paper and CD formats and included the Mercedes Benz mechanic's DVD/CD workshop manual for it. The man that I bought the car from was a retired U.S. Navy Master Chief and as I have stated before, when I was in the military ( I was USAF, but interacted with the Navy too), I worked with a few Master Chiefs and every one of them was a meticulous, detail oriented guy. My CL 55 AMG was perfectly maintained and was so clean you could have eaten off the chrome threshold on either the driver's or passenger's side. While the Master Chief didn't go crazy with upgrades on the car, it did have a tune on it, in fact, a custom tune for the car and the Mercedes Benz top speed limiter of 155 mph had been discarded with the tune, and also, the car's 0 to 62 mph time was now 3.85 seconds, which is insanely quick for a car that weighs as much as mine does. So, I love my AMG. It is in perfect condition and should remain that way for sometime as I take very good care of it. Have fun with your AMGs folks!

I had owned a s600 before loved it ABC suspension is so smooth V12 awesome engines run butter smooth very powerful just a very smooth this engine behaves like no other motor

As an owner of a CL600 and previously having owned a CL55 I love seeing new videos of these cars and getting more word out about them. The maintenance can be pricey even at diy, but still worth it. Other things worth mentioning that are expensive are door locks $500 a pop, front window regulators that are $500 also and the valve blocks for the abc that are over a $1000 for each. I have a 2005 CL55 and I love this car. I do all the repair and maintenance work on my CL in my garage. I must confess it is not my daily driver, but when I take her out, it is a blast!. My recommendation is; do not cheap out on maintenance, but do shop smart. We only live once, so enjoy what makes you happy, for me it is my CL55. :)

Excellent video and all the info is on point. I'm a current MB master tech, on the line for over 10 years now. This car is really amazing when properly maintained. Yes, maintenance is a money pit on these, so if you can't afford one, don't buy one. If you can fix it yourself, there are a lot of resources out there and you can save a whole lot of money. Realize that you should only take on the ABC pump on this if you have a lot of tools, extensions, etc.

For a big Benz that can out run Ferraris and lambos, the maintenance is a hell of a lot cheaper! AMG the best or nothing!!! I own a w211 03 e320 and keep up with the maintenance and has been an awesome car, built superior! I want a w215 from 03-06 but just a regular cl500 without the ABC, but great video!

I had one. Put 160,000 miles on it. It was a fantastic car, and fairly reliable. I rebuilt the ABC Pump and Valve block solenoids. Coil packs went out like clockwork once a year thankfully FCP euro has a good warranty on them. I changed the water pump, radiator,and electric fan. One critical maintenance point thats never done is the abc fluid and filter change. I did that every oil change. As for the cost, i bought most of the parts from fcp euro and any mb dealer parts from mb of atlanta as they had the best prices.

My CL55 has 184,000 miles on it and all work is done myself. After replacing the ABC pump and several other ABC parts, eventually the impossible-to-replace hose that runs over the motor to the regulator sprung a leak. I removed ALL the ABC stuff, sold it to Arnott for cores and installed a YellowSpeed coil-over kit with a Strutmasters ABC light delete module. Best car move I ever made! With YellowSpeed, these cars do not need sway bars, the suspension will only travel 2.5” before the tire leaves the ground. People that tell you sway bars are needed are thinking of Corvairs or normal cars. In hard cornering, the car can only lean 2”

I bought a 2004 S600 with the same expensive systems. I found one that was neglected and got it as a project car. I've already spent 2X the purchase price in parts for DIY. Not for the faint of heart, but it's been an amazing project and experience. I replaced the pump, rebuilt the valve blocks, and replaced major ABC lines including the ones that snake around the engine carrier. ABC system so far has been the most expensive parts, but the second would be the PSE actuators in the doors and trunk. After this car, I think I'm ready for any complicated luxury car project :-)

Just came across this video. Been contemplating buying a one owner 06 SL65 with 26000 miles. I'm going to BUY IT!!! Coming from 6 yrs ownership of an E63 V10 M6, the forums were filled with scare mongering. 6 yrs later, not a damn thing went wrong... Like one of the comments said, "maintenance, maintenance, maintenance" Solid video. 👌🏽

I've got a '05 SL500. I bought her BECAUSE there's no turbos or supercharger, just a very sweet 5 litre that just runs and runs all day long. Like you said, maintenance isn't too hard, just plan a Saturday morning for it. Yes, I have ABC in it, works great!! She's got 303 wheel horsepower with a 7-speed trans. That's fast enough for me, had her up to 131 mph [in Mexico!!] and feels like 145 is about the top end. Just keep them maintained and remember that they weren't made for quarter mile blasts, will last a good, long time.

A $900 to $1,000 "plan B" maintinace on my wifes 2011 E350 coasted me in parts not even $150. The cabin filter was simple to change. I replaced the twin engine air filters with K&N for better fuel economy. Then brought it to a shop that specializes in German and Italian cars & got the oil changed, greased a couple spots and the car checked for any problems for $160. Doing simple maintenance yourself saves butt loads of money.

Hey neighbor, couple of things to clarify, the ABC shocks almost never go bad, what goes bad are the nitrogen spheres (every 9 years or 80,000 miles). Assuming you replace the nitrogen spheres within 9 years or 80,000 the shocks will last forever. Shocks do go bad ONLY if you fail to replace the nitrogen spheres at the above intervals. The spheres are the items you did not show. Each sphere about $100 you will need at least 3 of them. If the steering fluid is dark that means one of the spheres went bad, you need to replace all of them at the same time, put the new fluid in. So shocks is the item that is 100% fullproof on that car. The ignition coils, we are living in 2018, i can fix an ignition coil for $200 if you provide which cylinder is misbehaving, for ignition coils not to go bad you just need to replace the rubber boots every time you replace the spark plugs. Transmission is fullproof engine is fullproof, there is really nothing horribly wrong with this car. I think a BMW 7 series would be way more expensive to maintain than this ride (speaking from experience). The alignment, this car has simple suspension just like any other mb or bmw, there is nothing hard about alignment on this vehicle, any $100 shop should be able align it.

Excellent video. You nailed it. If people want to own such a car they need to realize that it's expensive. Period. There is no other way around it. Instead, people want to own these types of cars and pay nothing for maintenance. They are just asking for trouble. And I think part of the reason these cars have a bad reputation is that people buy them only intending to keep them for 3-5 years, so they don't bother with long-term maintenance and this means the cars reach the used car market in often poor mechanical condition. The best and reliable cars I know and deal with have been WELL-MAINTAINED by both owners and dealers. Those are the ones to buy, not the abused and neglected cars.

I ve got an E Class 320 CDI elegance and BMW 745i e65 in white 2002. The E class is W210 model lovely driving , but not so good as S class 320 W220. The BMW 745i e 65 2002 , came as direct swap for Audi A4 2.0 petrol automatic 2003 , which I ve bought it for just 350£ . So not too bad . Is all a matter of looking around , you really don't have to spend a fortune on a car which is more than 10 years old . And thanks to You tube most of the things can be done at home ! Great video. I am not surprised about the price. When it comes to Mercedes the only way I am surprised about the price is when the price for a repair is lower when you think it won't be. I am talking about dealer prices. Let's call it reverse sticker shock. Question: Over looking the fact that it can devalue the car when trying to sell it, with this type of car, could you convert the ABC system to a standard shock and spring system?

Nice video. I'm 3 years in on owning my 2005 s55 with 67k miles. So far we've had to do the brakes, radiator, supercharger pulley, bearing and belt after those repairs the passenger side ABC hose burst and we had the pump flushed while changing the hose. Love the car to death. Great info. Thank you for sharing.

I have a 2003 CL600. I am a purist. So, no coil over springs; its all natural. I love it. The only mod that's done is a Pressertech Stage to ECM upgrade which gives me up to 23mpg on the highway and about an extra 100hp. I plan to change the radio if I can find one that looks factory. I worship this car. I also have a 07 S550 which just doesn't have the same sex appeal & performace as the CL600.

i own a 2005 s600 with that system .. the best riding car i ever had .. just check on the system fluids every now and then and DONT cheap out specially on maintenance for that system

I had '04 CL600 (same twin turbo engine and ABS system). I bought it for $14K and it had 86K miles on it, beautiful dark metallic brown with tan leather interior. I did the coil packs, a set of spark plugs (all 24 of 'em), oil / filter change and the ignition computer (the box on front top of the engine) - all for about $1,750 total. It took me all day (about 7 hours - I'm not a trained mechanic, just your average guy with average mechanical skills). I did also have to replace some vacuum hoses that sit under the coil packs because they were brittle and broke (careful mapping of these is extremely important! - take pics). I did all the work at home in the garage - no lift, no power tools. I did also have an ABS hose break. Too hard for me to fix in the garage at home (I did not have a lift). I took it to a local independent mechanic and he replaced it for $800, including flushing and changing the ABS fluid and filter. I had the car for 3 years, drove it like I stole it and sold for $9K. Cheap, no, but driving a $135K car for less than a used late model toyota - I'll take it. YMMV.

I just bought a 2003 CL600 with a Brabus "Complete Spec". List on the car was $126K in 2003 dollars. Brabus was another 50K. The car is super fully loaded. So so condition 100K miles. Bought it knowing it was rough. I like wrenching and thought about how insane it would be to have a German V12 automobile as a father daughter project. I broke the rules and bought the cheapest one I could find since it was a dealer who was taking my BMW X5. It had 103K miles, clean car fax and records. Mostly dealer serviced until the last owner who had an Indi shop do the work. Have records of two new front hydraulic struts, pads, rotors, front end rebuilt. The car ran like crap though, and after parsing the v12icpack videos I knew one or both coils needed replacement. Interior maybe an 7-8. Massage and ventilation on seats no op, rear windows no op, small scrape dent rear pass qtr panel but not seen 10 feet away. Car was not garaged the last few years and plenty of hood paint chips. out the door about $7500. Designio Mocha Black :) on black interior. Car looks great super clean 12-15 ft away. It has the huge amg bremebos all around since it had all the option boxes checked off. 1) coil packs from V12icpack.com $699 each. I have never done one and it took me less than an hour per side. Fixed misfire. 2) I repaired a few interior parts that looked bad but very easy to JB weld, plastic and clips and some love. The rear window module for the back windows $50 on eBay. Under the rear seat super easy to fix. 3)have all the parts to replace the nitrogen balls front back and rebound. Looks simple enough. 4) bought a MB star laptop for about $800 5) abc light on from pad sensor $10 ? and two seconds to get brake light off. The car is stunning to look at. You do need to be a little adventurous and have a decent set of tools. Also an ok garage. I have expendable income and this is not my daily. Otherwise you can try to find an "old camaro" rusted out POS for two or three time the money. Sure no ABC but come on. Put this thing next to any "classic" that is cheaper to repair? No contest. And you get street cred because 90% of the people driving these at this point are gear heads. I figure I'll have 11K in the thing and not have to worry about much for a while. And it's one of the coolest looking cars you will see on the road. Next car will be an sl600. 2003 or so. Next time I will pay more for a garaged example. Better cosmetics are worth the money FOR SURE.

Should’ve mentioned the accumulators on the abc pump. I’ve done quite a few of those for whining in the ABC system.

I loved this video... I'd like your advice and will shoot you an email if that's ok. I actually have a better example of a 2005 CL65 than Doug DeMuro had in his video and have been on the fence about either selling it or keeping it for some time. It is probably the best, lowest mileage example of this car I've ever come across. I purchased it at 34,800 miles in 2013 and currently have near 39,000 miles on it and have done most of the trouble maintenance outlined in your video while it was under warranty... I had a kickass warranty from an Exotic Car warranty company out of Las Vegas which my independent shop in Arlington Heights said was the best warranty company they ever dealt with... Coils replaced, ABC accumulator replaced because it was whining and a couple other things including the motor mounts (since one was almost toast) so I did the trans mounts as well. Also all new brakes for 3k total (front and rear) installed with all Merc OEM... Great shop in Arlington Heights for Mercs. I'm about to ship the car home to Arizona, but need some advice if you're willing... I'll send an email.

A nice reality check video. These cars are entirely serviceable, ABC & Arnott are fine and frankly, there's no substitute for the M275 engine. In 20 years it won't be those little V-8's that bring the collector money. My SL65 pays me back every time the starter whirs and 12 eager friends come to life. I would say leaking engine mounts are the biggest headache to look for. On the SL65 the engine comes out whereas on the CL it can stay in. Turbo oil lines also an issue. I try to buy from FCP, but unfortunately, they do not carry the ignition coil packs for the SL65.

I have used around 10 000 euros for this car within 4 months after I bought it from a car shop. Just now it starts to be in perfect condition. A lot of work - but: a lot of fun!

Got CL55k here. Just converted to coilovers for $1100. Did the work myself. Drives just fine, but will add front strut bar when getting rid of tandem pump soon

When I was a tech at MB, had a customer spend $6k on his S65 doing brakes just to trade it in 2 weeks later. That engine cover...I walked into the parts department with the part number, told them we had to “goodwill” this piece because I broke it. A few keyboard clicks later, it was silent. I believe it was $6k at the time? Thank god that was just a joke! The arnott tip is the key. I use these bags on my BMW touring.

Hey I have a 03 cl500 and had to replace the eis, esm, ecu and see I need a special to to properly reinstall the eis I'm in Chicago and wonder do you have the special tool???

@LegitStreetCars, something else to note after watching this video. Investing in a decent computer to read/reset codes, perform basic settings and coding is a must. I have an Autel MaxiDas DS808 that will do everything, to include dealer style ABC Oscillation/Rodeo. About $800 bucks and has already paid for itself. Does many other manufacturers as well including my Touareg V10 TDI.

I had to do the abc pump on a cl500 it took me the whole day it was such a pain in the ass i dont wanna know how difficult it would be on a v12

I've replaced (on two separate occasions) that dead end ABC hose that ends in the subframe, good times!
