It's worth it to spend the extra on a W221/C216, they're about 20x as reliable and 10x as nice inside. I almost bought an S55 a couple years ago...it had had about 40k in repairs in about 5 years. I didn't buy it. I bought an E60 M5 instead which, somehow, is cheaper to run.

About 15 years ago, I worked with an old mechanic who was about retirement age. He had one of these. My father owned the business we worked at and this car was nicer than my dad’s E class! Charlie (the mechanic) told me that his daughter had bought this car for him brand new from the Arlington Mercedes dealership. She was a screenwriter and had landed her first big job. She bought this for him as a way to say “thank you”. He had raised her when her mother left. Being a single father, working two mechanics jobs to support your child through school, I can’t think of someone more deserving of this car than him. Charlie was truly a King.

The cup holder is designed to be have "play" so when you hit big pot holes or bumps, the force is absorbed by the mechanism preventing your latte from spilling. Mercedes over thinks every little detail and that goes for cup holders too. I have similar "flimsy' holders in my SL65 and I understand why they have play.

I think Bosch has every right to have their name on the gauge cluster. They make the ABS systems for most cars (+ makes a lot of other parts), so it's comparable to Brembo having its name on the calipers, or the audio company having its logo on the interior speakers.
@SPZ909
@SPZ909 2 года назад
It’s not even slightly comparable to Brembo. It’s very intrusive to put your name on a car’s gauge cluster just because you made the abs system and some other parts. Like it’s fine to put your name on the abs itself, that’s comparable to Brembo, but not on the damn gauge cluster lmao. Car manufacturers source dozens of parts from many different companies and imagine if they all printed their name on the dashboard.

Some quirks Doug missed: The Active Body Control Chassis, The right mirror button, while being pushed in, activating a parking stance in reverse (that you can program), the side AND CENTER rear view mirror is bound to the memory seat positions that you have manually adjusted it to, if you press a memory button the center rear view mirror will automagically assume the position it was in when you safed your seat position. The hidden compartment below the drivers seat actually held the optional fire extinguisher and below the passenger seat, there was a first aid kit in my S class of that time, labeled from the outside. Despite my love hate for this car, the pricy parts that like to break around the time of being sold and what not, it was decently easy to maintain, given I would never put it into a mechanics hands but rather fix it myself. That was the highest cost, bringing it to a Mercedes dealership to get fixed would make up the highest part of the repair cost, which I assume, everyone in the comments and Doug himself like to think that magically would change if you bring in a newer model. My counter argument would be that newer models are increasingly harder to maintain yourself to build dependency on said dealerships and if you factor in the value depreciation of luxury cars, you got a decent deal all things considered.

Well I accidentally hit the send button before I finished. Anyway I noticed it tilting to the left, ( I see it from the rear as the nose of it is in the garage) and thought the left front tire had gone flat. Which it actually did but not for a couple of more days and not before the car was ( is) tilting an alarming angle to the left. So as I am looking at the car from the rear the front left side almost looks as though it would be dragging on the ground, it doesn't have the air shocks, has regular coil shocks so it's not the leveling system because it doesn't have a leveling system. I have to get it towed to a shop which I am terrified to do because, since I moved to this city, well suffice it to say if it weren't for lousy as well as dishonest mechanics I would never have a mechanic at all. I know I am being terribly verbose but I am just wondering if you could possibly direct me to a site where I might get an idea or if you have heard of such a thing happening. Any help would be greatly appreciated,. Oh I've been told a few times I should just get rid of the car but I'm pretty attached to the old girl. I've always kept it well maintained but this one has me stymied. I'm certainly not asking you to diagnose my car but I can usually find a forum where I get an idea of what might be wrong or what needs to be worked on but I haven't had any luck in this case so if you can be of any assistance whatsoever it would be greatly appreciated.

The only thing that usually breaks on this car is the hydraulic suspension with the shock absorbers. And those are expensive to repair. Believe it or not, most other things are solid. But the fuel consumption is huge, especially in crowded European cities. It's a car from a different era that reached the top and we won't see anything like it ever again.

The last time I was in Germany visiting family, we were driving home from the Frankfurt airport on the Autobahn; my folks let me drive because we were in their old 123 chassis Benz 300 Turbodiesel, which they'd had since my childhood, and which I adored. I looked in the rearview mirror, and saw driving lights waaaay back in the distance behind me, so I moved from the left lane (the fast lane) over to the right lane, doing it properly, used my blinker, checked for other cars, etc., and in the couple seconds it took to do that, the car behind me closed the distance. When I looked behind me again to see where it was, I was shocked to see it was actually just about to pass me, and it went by SO quick, it was like I was parked on the side of the road! It was just a black blur, but being a car enthusiast I recognized what it was. My dad also recognized it, and in a very casual voice said "mm...CL65 AMG... Gotta keep one eye on the mirror..." That car is MADE for the Autobahn; just eating up endless kilometers in great comfort, at warp speed, with absolutely no fuss or drama... Damn I miss the Autobahn!

Everything about these cars is bullet proof except the very elegant ABC suspension system. It’s all hydraulic and most systems start to leak around 80-100k miles. They are supposed to last 300k miles but most owners ignore the maintenance required to keep the system for imploding. It is a about $8,000.00 to repair maybe a little less at a Indy garage. DIY is possible but you better know what you’re doing and still have $5k for parts. I have a 2006 SL55 that was meticulously maintained by the previous owner but just had $6k in repairs for the ABC suspension. My car was $135k new and I paid $26k. So even with that huge repair bill, I’m still enjoying the beast for many more years to come. You gotta pay to play.

I'm guessing the little center dial between the top vents (the 3rd auto climate control) is to allow you to have the air on your face be slightly cooler than the air coming out of the rest of the vents. I never knew a feature like this existed until I just got a 2019 M5 and it has this feature. So you can set your ambient temp but then have the air on your face be a bit cooler if you like that sort of thing, which I do.
