In a world of iconic menswear, men's ties are certainly up there with the Burberry trench coat which by the way, you want to know if a Burberry trench coat is worth it or not , please check out this video here. Generally, you know you're doing something right even an entire industry is here to fake your products and that's the case with Hermès ties. Finding a used one is almost like a gamble if you don't know what to look for and stay tuned for another video where we discuss how you can identify a fake Hermes tie from a genuine one. For this video, we'll assume you buy one directly from Hermes so you know what you get is the real deal. In the US, Hermes ties have a price tag of a $180. In Europe, it's a little less. In Australia, it's a little more but overall, it's right around that price point.
So are Hermès ties worth it? Of course, the answer is it depends!
If you're someone who really likes printed whimsical motifs, these little animal prints then Hermès is definitely the way to go. Also, if you're looking for more unusual colors such as fuchsia ties or chartreuse green maybe some orange tones, Hermès will likely have a shade that you can get. Also, if you're a Wall Street banker or if you work in finance and you want to fit in with your company culture, an Hermès tie is certainly the way to do that. That being said, personally, I'm not a big fan of whimsical motifs on ties and I prefer different textures so Hermès ties are not the ideal tie for me. I have a bunch of them including vintage ones and new ones but frankly, I don't wear them a whole lot anymore. The ones I wear the most are probably the woven ties, they are somewhat simple and don't look like a typical Hermès tie. With many other luxury products, you pay a lot for the name but you get average to mediocre quality.
On the other hand with an Hermès tie, you certainly pay for the name but you also get a quality product. On top of that, genuine Hermès ties usually yield quite high prices even when they're used. Of course, they have to be in pristine condition which ties rarely are if you actually wear them and on top of that, you have to prove that it's actually a genuine product which can be very hard unless you have the specific receipt with a photo of the tie. Of course, if you give all the Hermès ties you don't want any longer to a store, they have to mark them up and ultimately, you don't get much for used Hermes ties anyways. Also if you're shorter than 6 foot or 183 centimeters, Hermes ties may be too long for you and all you can do is tie a really big knot which may often not work with your head size. Also if you're really a tall man and you want more variety in your ties, Hermès is not the right place for you.
I also think they're not worth buying used unless you know very well what you're doing, otherwise you may pay top dollar for what turns out to be a fake.
Personally, I also like ties to have different widths, my favorite width is about nine centimeters or three and a half inches, and it's not a niche served by Hermes at all.
Building up an entire Hermes tie collection can be rather expensive. If you buy 12 ties you're already down more than $2,000. Now they certainly use high quality materials including their silk but when I was looking for silks for our Fort Belvedere ties, I met Weavers who would actually produce jacquard woven silks for Hermes and we get ourselves from the same vendor at the same quality standards yet Fort Belvedere ties cost a lot less especially if you buy more and get the volume discount. Hermes on the other hand doesn't offer any volume discount.

I'm with you, Sven. I understand the high quality of Hermes, but for me, I find most of their prints in poor taste. They sure aren't worth $180 to me. I'd rather have one from Fort Belvedere over Hermes any day. I like that you compared a high end brand like Hermes to your own Fort Belvedere. Fort Belvedere is every bit as good, if not better, than any "luxury" brand.

I bought my first Hermes tie a month ago. The first time I wore it I was complimented and this was from a senior partner at another firm. They actually apologised for not making as much effort as me! They simply said “That is a beautiful tie that looks like it arrived in an orange box. I should have made more of an effort.” I congratulated them on their eye for detail and thanked them for the compliment. I must say it really made my day and I’ve already ordered another one. They really are in a different league compared to ties I’ve previously worn. I have fallen in love with them.

I buy one every year at the Hermès store. Totally aggree with you, they're limited, which is why I wouldn't build a collection out of them... but for what they do best, no one does it better. If you take, say, a Brooks Brothers tie with a similar style print, it's not even vaguely comparable. The quality and attention to detail are amazing. Also, I'm originally from Brazil and I didn't know they had silk farms there! Cool video.

1:05 180 dollars - ''In europe it's a little less, 175 euro's'' It costs 157 euro's if you convert the dollars into euro's which means that it's actually a 12.7% more expensive in Europe
@gentlemansgazette
@gentlemansgazette 5 лет назад
You are not comparing apples to apples. In the US, you have to add sales tax, in Europe the price tag includes it.. So if you are in Chicago, LA or New York the final.price is different. If you want to compare actual prices, remove the sales tax in Europe. In Germany, it is 19% in Italy even more... And then you see that the actual price is a little lower. Including sales tax it depends since different places have different rates and you have to compare it on an individual basis.
@arnoudio
@arnoudio 5 лет назад
So the comparison isn't equal, since one has taxes included in its price and the other one doesn't.

@42treg that is not only rude, it is not true for all of europe. you know very well, that there are brands with different prices in different countries within europe. ALSO - one has to consider the exchange rate and which VAT in the USA is considered. There are states with very little VAT and others a little higher. it is a generalization and not an error to commit
@nursen2106
@nursen2106 5 лет назад
@42treg I just calculated it. it is about the same or less depending on the exchange rate. how should it cost less? you know that the VAT is added when you check out resp. if you order from abroad, you don't pay the local VAT but the import sales tax of your country. in the country I live in, that is 20% in Germany 19%. So it can only be a very minor price difference in favor of the US in case the local VAT you count is less then 19% PLUS as stated before - the difference in exchange rate. yes, I can calculate and yes I looked the prices up. so what else should I do? invent a story, so you come up as the truthteller?

Sad to say the days of ties and other neckware are officially over in Europe (except UK). In banks offices and other business locations even newscasters Showmaster and invited guests at talk shows all wear no neckware just open shirts. In banks they even wear specific white shirts with black buttons giving a hint where a tie used to be. Some even mentioned they are happy to be relieved of the oppressing choking factor of a tie. I certainly don't follow that trend. I remain outsider and stand out with bow tie neck tie and cravat.
@dtom420
@dtom420 Год назад
I see this happening a lot, myself! Unfortunately, the restrictiveness/choking aspect has nothing to do with a properly tied tie… it’s a function of overly tight shirt collars, imho. But the perception, as you correctly stated pushed the blame off on the tie. On the other hand, fashion is cyclical and ties WILL cause me back into popularity at SOME point. If bell bottoms and parachute pants can come back (as they have, you can BET that neck ties will as well. When they do… classic/antique versions of the famous masters, like Hermès, will be the most rare and most valuable! Jmho

Hello Gentlemen! Sven, I value what you do here and appreciate the effort you put into these videos. You and Preston have wonderful fashion sense and make a great team- I bet you also have a lot of fun making these videos! So is it worth it? Great question. In my humble and personal opinion: No, and only under the pretense that the patterns don't at all appeal for the price AND that I'd be hard pressed to invest that sort of money on a tie of any type in lieu of something like another fine fur felt fedora.

This may be too old a thread but I have a good collection (11 in excellent shape) of Hermes ties that I inherited from my father but he collected them during the 1960’s and 1970’s. I love them but they’re not all patterned/colored in ways that appeal to my aesthetic. I know they are all 100% genuine - just like the 80+ women’s Hermes scarves from my mother. Of course we don’t have receipts but my dad and Grandfather were well known investment bankers in New Your for decades and we regularly visited Hermès in NYC and Paris for Christmas and birthdays. It was a family tradition as far back as I remember. Now, I’ve come full circle and I’m interested in Hermés myself. While it’s not a matter of price barrier for myself… I’d love to sell some of these ties and scarves to someone that will TRULY appreciate them; and then use the proceeds to purchase some newer Hermés ties that better fit my aesthetic. ANY advice on how to sell/trade them without getting taken to the cleaners? Is there a service that can authenticate ties (and maybe scarves) so that I can sell them to others without them worrying they are reproductions?

Much of the pricing of super high end stuff is just brand tax, but some of it is chemistry. The thing you get from Hermes, and the Hermes price is vibrant colors that last a long time, which isn't easy or cheap to develop. You can see what I'm talking about when you compare vintage dyed and printed goods to modern ones. Most vintage stuff is slightly muted, largely due to oxidation. How much that is worth to you is your choice. Some cheaper fabrics will look just fine for a while.

I'm talking the traditional really wide tie like Laurel and Hardy, Cary Grant, Humphrey Bogart, Clark Gable, and Fred Astaire all wore and they weren't ascots or cravats. They still make them somewhere in the UK but I've yet to find out who and Google has been no help in finding new ones. I can't stand these skinny ties and skinny lapels. At least my tailor can still get me wide lapels but not real ties. Any help would be appreciated.

I'm not really sure how accurate this video is. I have 6-7 Hermes ties. All of them are in classic muted colours, two of them are striped ties, and 2 of them are knit ties with nice textures to them. I'm around 5'7 tall and the length works fine for me with a slightly modified knot, which does not result in the knot being too big for my face. I've had a totally different experience with Hermes ties. I think this video much more accurately described Ferragamo ties than Hermes ties.

You can buy beautiful ties for 70-80, with fun prints and great material-vineyard vines or any of the southern designers-but none last as well as Hermès or Ferragamo. They just don’t keep their shape as well. One designer to consider with great material and prints is Pineda Covalin. Not Hermès but very original.

I had to check the date. Where can I get a Hermes tie for $180? I should have stocked up.

I always consider woven pattern ties are superior to printed ties.

I wear Robert Talbott sevenfold ties, and 180 is about what I would expect to pay on eBay. So if you like the tie, 180 is not a bad price.

I've been able to find 3 authentic Hermes ties at thrift stores over the years. A few minutes here and there sifting through the tie section will pay off overtime just be patient!

Pay well for quality is always wise, but sometimes the price is so high and a supposed high quality so full of doubts that the entire idea must be placed in question. I mean for example, why pay $180-plus for a plain blue tie? Material can be prized and all, but it's just blue... and it's just a tie too. A middle ground of price and quality or slightly over seems better.
