Hermitcraft 10: Episode 12 - THE WAITING ROOM 

You should put a snail in the “out-of-order” waiting room. So when they ask why they can’t use it, you have an explanation and can just say, “snails.”

For a cursed music disc, you should make a "please hold" disc but periodically include a recording of you saying "We're ready to see you now" or "you wait is over, please come upstairs". When they come up, question why, deny ever having said anything, and send them back downstairs (bonus points if they start ignoring the messages, cause then when you actual call them up they won't believe it)

Make the “Out of Order” waiting room have a nice vibe, live having a television, or a couple of plants. It will make you even more depressed in the other waiting room, just knowing you could’ve had an enjoyable experience

It would be hilarious if Grian put an “employee of the month” or a “we will miss” and it shows a custom painting of the backrooms monster in the waiting room.

As far as I can tell, all the hermits have various niche skills in minecraft. Terraforming, texturing, gradients, redstone. And now that these guys have been playing with each other for several years, everyone's operating at top form and pushing this game to it's limits. It's a marvel to see, really.

You took the idea of going to the DMV and not only hit the vibe of it being physically painful with all the paperwork and waiting and just the soul sucking dread of it all, but also just made it emotionally unsettling too. I went in the other day too and thought of that waiting song in my head while I was waiting for my number to be called and fully understood the reason. Grian. It's genius. Bravo.

Grian, the command is “/trigger custom_model_data 1”. I know from the S9 world download. You have to have a specific item in your hand for it to give the permit though. (For permits, it is paper). If that does not work, change the 1 to some other positive number. It’ll work at some point.

I feel like Grian purposely added Permits into the game to terrorize all the other hermits in the permit office 😂😂

I think the waiting room should be a bit run-down, to achieve the full backrooms look. A couple ceiling panels missing, some blotches of yellow on the floor, some drywall peeling, etc. I think a looping music disc with fluorescent light buzzing would add to the atmosphere as well.

Idea: If Scar wants another permit, put as one of the questions “Have you sorted all your ores in to chests?”

Grian should commission a painting for the waiting room downstairs that is just a bland wheat field against an empty sky and place it directly in front of the chair. If people have nothing to look at their mind will make something up for them, but if they have 1 mundane thing to look at, it will drive them crazy.

Grian, what you need to do is colour code each line in the permit office to be for a different service (Permit renewal, permit creation, permit disputes, whatever you want) so when someone walks into one line for a new permit, you can tell them to wait in the other line until you're ready to serve the next person in that line.

It's the outdated small-pile carpet texture of the gray concrete powder that really sends it for me. You just KNOW that floor hasn't been cleaned since the 80s.

The permit office may be my favorite thing in all of Hermitcraft history. I cannot help but laugh out loud every time. Especially with Joel's exasperated sighs every time. 😂

Grian, to make a permit take a piece of paper in hand and run the command; "/trigger CustomModelData set #" 1 - diamond 2 - gold 3 - iron. Then, use an anvil to name the permit. if you ever forget use the command; "/trigger CustomList"

What I feel would make the permit office better: - A lamp thats on a simple redstone clock that flickers on and off - A fake floor at the bottom of the stairs that drops you into one of those item frame map rooms - Knocking in the Please Hold song (this one might be a little too much) - The song fading in and out like it is being put in and out of water - A skeleton skull or two to bring the ambience of the waiting room up - Those glass shields in between the employee and the guest with the little opening at the bottom to pass things - One of those number signs that announces the number - Water dripping from the ceiling and a bucket (cauldron) to catch it - A cup with the pen that has an obnoxious flower (this could be done using a flower pot) - One of those silly posters like "TEAMWORK it makes the dream work", "DID YOU APPLY FOR DIAMOND INSURANCE? See how you can apply today" That's all I got for now

you know what would be a cool addition, if you could put a few skeleton armor stands on the upstairs waiting room, to symbolize how waiting goes on the the permit office

Grain you forgot one of the most important parts to add to the music disk! You should add the faint buzzing of fluorescent lightbulbs to it, but make it fade in so slowly that the person gaslights themselves into thinking it's in their heads.

You could add a full skeleton sitting on one of the chairs using armor stands, so the hermits sit next to a skeleton of someone who had waited for too long! Also a wall reserved to employee of the month and put like 10 pics of you with different dates

I’m so happy to hear the glitched version of “Please Hold”, when I first heard it I thought glitchiness would suit it so it was cool to see that become a reality! If you’re toning down the glitchiness I think it would also be cool to have the sound of humming lights in the background to add to the eeriness (and perhaps some flickering lights in the waiting room to match?) :)

If you ever feel the desire to close up the Permit office for some time, just get a bee in there, let it hide in one of those 300 bee hives and say the office is closed due to a bug infestation or something like that. Maybe only until the professional exterminator arrives, but who knows who got the permit for that, so.. I think that would be a really effective way to put off permit work :)

Okay im not super musically inclined and also days late but just as someone who likes liminal horror, if you want some more ideas about how to make the song less anxiety inducing and more just generally unsettling, my thoughts: - instead of adding more instruments, have the instruments drop out (ie, sudden a capella) and restart at times that don't match the lyrical phrasing - add just like. slight wind or water drop sounds after a certain point - slowly reduce tempo, only by like 15 bpm max, then abruptly reset it when the phrase restarts - slow descresendos and crescendos - quiet static overlay that gets louder when music gets quieter and less quiet when music gets loud

You should commission a rube Goldberg machine so people who submit complaints can watch them slowly and cartoonishly make their way to a cactus to die

If your not careful and noclip out if reality in wrong areas, you'll end up in the Department of Hermit Permits waiting room, where it's nothing but the stink of moist carpet, the madness of mono-yellow, and endless backround noise of Please Hold By Jono Smithers Edit: this is a copypasta. Grian should make a Break Room in the Permit Office for employees that get overworked by rampant clients.

Grian should create a corporate-style ad for the permit office in a way that’s intentionally vague and gives barely any actual information about it at all. Soulless corporate 'nothing' music in the background would be the cherry on top

There should be a sign at each line saying something along the lines (heh) of "please use the other line" and "please wait for your turn, your patronage is very important to us"

The part where Grian and Joel are fighting and Grian goes "Sir, SIR! Please calm down sir!" and Joel walks straight to the complaint section was comedy gold it was actually perfect XDD

The permit office music is possibly the most fun thing in HermitCraft ever! I'm laughing tears when Joel just says "no"

My GREAT ideas for the permit office: 1. BUZZING FROM THE LIGHTS. (bee head on a noteblock that randomly goes off) 2. White lights. We need this to be a sterile environment that induces sadness.(BONUS IF THEY FLICKER) 3. Tip jar! (Must be empty) (flowerpot or something) 4. Leaky ceiling! Have water above the ceiling for drips! 5. A loud clock. We need that horrible ticking in the mostly quiet. We need the Joel amount of mania to come from this building. 6. Roches or Rats infestation signs downstairs 7. “False hope is the only hope!” Painting

I love how Scar made that spire of ore expecting everybody to want it gone, but Grian and Gem are just actually impressed by how good it looks

Here’s an idea for next season’s shopping district. It starts as one building, then every time someone wants to add a shop, they have to build an extension. I’m imagining stairs circling the outside and doors that reveal different paths depending on if they are open or closed.

Grian, the Permit Office _needs_ a post box. Every government office/building should be accessible from an external means -even if the post is destroyed/lost/returned for whatever reason-

2 Things to add to the Permit office: 1) A twisty disneyland-esque waiting line 2)A number system. Like when you get in they have to take a number and wait for their number to be called even though there are no people in line.

Grian criticizing someone for not stocking their shop while not having one himself as the permit person is the kind of irony Grian would deliver.

The "Downstairs Waiting Room" needs a lot of asymmetrical walls just scattered around to really capture the eerie-ness of the Backrooms, as Joel was more just depressed and not exactly unsettled by it's design. You could also try to create a tiny gap in the wall somewhere that shows another room where you could put maybe like a painting of the Backrooms monster (the thin guy, idk what he's called) off in the distance!

Grian I think it would be funny if, by chance gem needed something from the permit office and you were super helpful. But if any of the other hermits notices how cooperative you are for gem, completely down play it and respond with something like “well it is the permit office, that’s what we’re here for. To help people.” It would drive scar and Joel crazy… also love the idea of the Poe Poe riding pigs😂😂

Id love to see some custom analogue horror style posters or warnings in the backrooms! Something like "you will be perfectly safe if you keep an iron helmet on at all times" or "if lights go out, do not move" would really make the hermits want to spend ss little time in the permit office as possible.

Fun idea: 1. Lead every Hermit to the Permit office by making up random “issues” with their shops. Make everyone experience the glory of the Permit office and make everyone hate it, make everyone shiver at the thought of being on hold. 2. Have skulk sensors that activate the song randomly placed around the map. This will make the fellow Hermits feel like the Permit office is inescapable, like it follows them everywhere just to torment them. 3. Start selling therapy lessons under the name “Grien”. Market these as the best way to finally escape the Permit office. 4. Use the exact same tactics as you used with the Permit office. Every time someone needs these so called therapy lessons, tell them to please hold.

I actually love the backrooms vibe in the waiting room. I would love to see you go deeper into it. If the floor was made out of snow you could put down patches of powdered snow that drops you down into an actual backrooms with wide open waiting rooms, stairwells to nowhere, libraries of filing cabinets with obscure forms, hallways of out of order restrooms/drinking fountains, etc. I would prefer running into a warden than to drop into an endless government office building.

I sincerly hope he makes this waiting room a labyrinth at some point. But like an exruciatingly long labyrinth with only one path, not difficult at all just long, and he asks the hermits to come fast to redeem the permit and if they dont go fast enough he cancels the permit for "lack of good manners"

You need to intersperse stuff in the song where you speak in the flattest tone possible: “Thank you for your patience, we will get back to you.. eventually.” “Your feedback is important to us, please make sure to fill out a feedback card on your way out.” Have a small door in the waiting room off to the side that can’t be opened. If someone gets too close to the door, it sets off a shrieker or several. If asked mention a test audience for the waiting room music solemnly. (The implication is that they listened to the early drafts of the disc and went insane)

Okay, Grian, you NEED to add more and more floors to the waiting room. Have it go wayyy deeper than it realistically should, and the deeper you go the more unhinged the music gets... The Permit Office needs its own dedicated Backrooms! XD

To make the waiting room more unsettling instead of a 2x1 chair just make it a 1x1 chair so its not symmetrical just to annoy them. To solve your diamond problem charge anyone that comes to the permit office some diamonds since they come back like 4 times just to be told they need to "please hold"

You should place a repeating jukebox 60-ish blocks below the waiting room so its barely in range, that only plays a light buzzing and flickering noise for like an hour.

I /love/ the permit office. You have made such a cool build with such comedic theater. It is one of my favorite things this season. Maybe my favorite, and the fishing craze, collaborative caving, and the neighborhood, and the mail system have all also happened and been great. Season 10 has been great. Thank you for your part of that.

Incredible idea (that will of course never be seen): below the True Waiting Room, add some redstone. Dispensers, note blocks, trap doors, etc. These will do nothing other than make sound. Maybe you could even set them up so they start when someone walks downstairs, or when you put in the Unsettling Please Hold disk. A couple clicks here and there, for maximum unsettling

I love when there's a familiar song that's just *slightly* off to give a sense of unease. I especially prefer it when it's just unnoticeable enough to where you think, "wait a second... was that note correct? Maybe I'm just imagining things........ THAT ONE WAS DEFINITELY OFF!!" "Was that little chime always apart of the song? I don't remember it being there.." "Is this part of the song normal???? I can't tell anymore"

free ideas for the permit office: 1. A redstone/noteblock contraption that plays a ticking clock sound 2. A small square wall mounted t.v in the waiting room, one of those really old ones 3. A tip jar on the counter 4. Motivational poster that say things like "Hang in there!" 5. Flickering lights in the waiting room

I love the waiting room! If you wanted to make it more unsettling and creepy here are some suggestions: What you could do to make it even creepier is extend it out further in the section that has the chairs so that they have their back to a stretch of backrooms-esque walls that get dimmer and dimmer until they go into darkness (maybe with some gradients into black concrete or black concrete powder?). Just to make them super uneasy and not want to sit in the waiting room for any longer than necessary. Also, there should be some subtle signs on the wall when you first enter the downstairs waiting room just as a "hey, things will get strange soon". Your Permit Office skin could also be updated so that it has something wrong with the textures in one version so that if they come up to ask if they can wait up top it is eerie. Then, that added on to you continuing to act like normal will make it unsettling. Also the unhinged version of the wait music is fantastic!

I'm genuinely surprised Grian didn't add a music disk that played "depressingly dreary office sfx" on loop for The Permit office. With slow clacking of computer keys, occasional depressed sighing, awkard coughing, shuffling of office papers, a phone eternally ringing in the distance, and muffled monotone mumbling with the periodic "Im afraid I'll have to direct you to another department, please hold" being heard. THAT would make anyone wanna leave the permit place quickly! XD

Pro tip for making the forms: Type it up in a separate word document, one paragraph per question. Then you can copy and paste it in whenever you need a new book. Had to make a form office for a worldbuilding server. was very fun to ask people "did you fill out a form?"

You NEED a hot tub to relax in to deal with the increadibly HUGE amount of stress you have to deal with running the office. Now when someones on hold you can have a bathe out back.

I have been watching this channel grow for 8+ years (since the original hobbit hole vid). It is amazing to see how much it has grown while at the same time not growing up at all. Keep up the chaos, we all love it.

I REALLY want an unnecessary wall in the waiting room, to really drive home the "Liminal space" vibe; just a random wall, is someone hiding behind that wall? is someone else in the waiting room with you? who knows! why not check behind the wall? Random wall and white noise would be absolutely perfect
