When he scrolled through the statistics and took so long to find his number of deaths... I felt that. The statistics should really be organized better or searchable or something. (2:45)
@jimmartin516655
@jimmartin516655 2 года назад
They're alphabetical. The problem isn't really organization so much as what the stats are called in-game isn't what first comes to mind when looking for specific ones. Just calling it "Deaths" would be so much better. The other option would be allowing the player to reorder the stats to put the few they care about at the top of the list.

@celestialmoss963
@celestialmoss963 2 года назад
@@bot_Est1989 To preface this: I know that this is an excessive response to a one sentence reply. I wrote this because I saw the notification when I had nothing better to do and because I found it interesting to think/write about. Every study that has ever existed has been impacted by some amount of "luck". Ideal conditions do not exist reliably in the real world. Nobody should discount a real world study because it has a non-zero margin of error. There are many aspects of Cub's study that are affected by luck or RNG: ore placement within the seed, mob spawning, mob AI, the player's reaction to mobs and other obstacles, etc. There is no way to get the "ideal" seed, "ideal" mob-spawning/behavior, or "ideal" player behavior. There is no way to simulate these tests with every possible result of these RNG source on every possible seed either. Cub's study is by no means conclusive proof. However, the data he collected shows that there are major differences in the outcomes of each method which seem larger than what could reasonably be caused by fortune or other error sources. He or other people can perform additional tests with these methods to collect more data. Would the results be more accurate if Cub used silk touch? Maybe, maybe not. If Cub had used silk touch, he would have to consider how he would mend his pickaxe or allocate additional inventory space to carry multiple picks. Any mobile source of XP or additional picks will be finite. Going to an XP farm would be a huge time sink, and the time that it takes to travel is dependent on the location of HC's XP farm. Fortune is based on RNG, but the expected value of the result of Minecraft's RNG is the same for all (vanilla) players. If Cub switched to silk touch only for ores, then the time it takes to switch between pickaxes, the time it takes to mend the silk touch pickaxe, and any mistaken fortuning of ores or silk-touching of deepslate would be additional sources of error. Also, no reasonable person is going to want to spend 25+ hours mining only to end up with boxes of ores that would need to be fortuned anyways and deepslate that would need to be mined again to be useful. This would probably amount to hours of additional time. Cub is trying to provide useful information for players to use, and I believe it more useful to show that fortuning ores is sustainable with mending than to show the best way to mend a silk touch pick. It would be interesting to see someone reproduce Cub's tests with silk touch instead of fortune and address the additional issues introduced by using silk touch, but I doubt most people have 25+ hours to dedicate to that. TL;DR: Every study has sources of error. Fortune is not the only source of "luck" in Minecraft. Silk touch would introduce additional sources of error that would also have an effect of the results. Large sample sizes and repeated tests decrease the effect that sources of error have on the data. Cub spent ~8 hours testing each method to decrease the effect RNG has on the results.

I'm glad you did this, I've been doing basically method 3 and I've been seeing so many people say -59 is the best. But I wasted so much time working my way around lava lakes. Going up to only -54 usually brings you out level with the top of the lower lava lakes and the lava in ravines, rather like in the old model at Y=11. Its so much less hassle, and makes exploring the caves so much easier, especially in the early part of the game when you're just trying to gear up and Lava is such a real hazard. And those iron veins are a real asset too, which you get to see at a slightly higher level. And when you're geared up later in the game, lava is less of a problem, there;s nothing to stop you going down below your earthworks and sweeping up the diamonds you missed because you went over them by which time you'll have better efficiency picks, and you'll be able to move faster.

@WritingsOfQuill
@WritingsOfQuill 2 года назад
I am actually strip mining (in Minecraft, not IRL), not for copper or coal but because I wanted a big ugly hole in my world and underestimated the challenge of digging it manually. XD The pros: *massive* amounts of resources (especially stone, cobble, and deepslate), impressive change to the landscape, and lots of slimes. The cons: slow, boring (though not as much as branch mining imo), inefficient if you're looking for ores (or spawners or geodes) and requires a lot of tool repairs (netherite picks and Haste beacons are essential), and lots of slimes. Which sounds kind of terrible but I've been picking away at it for over a year, whiled away many relaxing evenings, listened to hundreds of hours of podcasts, reached bedrock twice (thanks 1.18 update for doubling the depth of my hole), killed the wither for the first time, created nearly a full diamond beacon, learned to use Replay Mod to chronicle the Big Dig, built an entire gold farm just to keep up with tool repairs, turned the half-finished build projects around the hole into ruins because they were neglected so long, mastered archery because of the damn slimes, sniped a skeleton at the bottom of the hole and got the Sniper Duel achievement, murdered multiple friends (they logged out in the hole and I dug away the floor, and since the hole includes spawn this resulted in death loops), built an in-between-bases-base in the side of the hole, the hole is my home now, i will live there forever, this world shall be consumed from within. Anyway strip mining is great

Cub, there are two big methods you didn't cover. 1) Just caving - start in a huge cave and just keep going after surface resources. Requires night vision. 2) Branch mine moling. You branch mine with pokey holes, but in a 1 by 1 using a trap door. I'd love to see you test these two methods and compare the results. Personally I've found a ton of resources by just caving. Branch mining seems so slow now with how slowly deepslate breaks. FYI: Strip mining is commonly misunderstood in the minecraft community. Look up the definition. It involves mining everything and leaving huge big rooms. Often done with a beacon to clear space for underground project. Branch mining is where you make tunnels. Mining a 1 by 2 or any such is branch mining.

My god, ~30 hours of mining results. That's insane Cub. I'll never do the pokey holes again, barely less diamonds, much more of the other resources (+ you're not really getting deepslate that way) and a billion times less fun.

I can explain your science. ;) It has everything to do with which blocks are air sensitive. Diamonds have a high chance of getting skipped if they touch air, so the don't generate as readily in caves as they do in the steady solid just above bedrock. Several of the other ores don't have that restriction, including some of the ones that just plain drop more so you'll definitely get more of those in a caving situation where they are readily visible and much easier to just grab and collect. Thank you for putting this to the test though. It's great to see the evidence back the theory.

I quite enjoy monotonous things, sometimes, I think. People hate powder mining in hypixel sky block but I love it, strip mining sounds quite interesting and fun, and going caving as well just makes it better.

Heres my diamond mining method: -56, strait line. If i hit gravel, I hog it out because it mines fast and exposes a large area. If Im feeling punky, poke holes on the sides (mobile has a 6 block reach). If I hit a cave and break into it, Ill explore a bit. Mega caves have too many mobs to be worth the time, usually. If I hit tuff, I go to the edge of the patch and do a 10 block long hall and three poke holes off it. There was good reason to mine on chunk borders (bedrock) but I don’t know if that still holds true and never bothered with it. Cubs methods sure get results!

You must have considered "THE ONE BLOCK STRAIGHT LINE WATER BUCKET METHOD". It is the best method of all time. But there is a down side that you have to be ready for any lava pools. But it is highly rewarding. As a wise man said "NO PAIN, NO GAIN". Keep growing man.

It was so delightful to see the thought put into the pranks. Getting to surprise Cub with a throwback to Ravagers Run was so nice. also 😂 the enormous grin you can hear in Joe's voice is serotonin in its purest form I used to do Method 1 but in 1.18 I've begun just going straight at -59 with a 3-high tunnel and 3 blocks between tunnels. At least in the early days. Now that I've gotten pretty geared up, I just go caving and get very lost lmao

One of my favorite ways to find diamonds is grabbing a handful of water breathing and night vision potions and flying out over an ocean looking for underwater ravines and searching them. I've not done anything official to calculate odds but I've always come out pretty good after a session of it.

wonder how does that compare to the oldschool chunk border mining. essentially method 1, but side holes every 3 blocks, going along chunk border, and if diamonds found, no more side-holes in the same chunk. this used to be the the fastest way to mine diamonds full stop.
