Today we head into the End for shulker boxes so that we can start dealing with the endless mess brewing. We build a basic Wither Skeleton farm. We finish up the exterior building of our starter home. Then we join up with Tango and Pearl to work on a Mail System Network for the server.

A more technical description of design is perhaps something like this. "Repetition feeds satisfaction from recognition. Variation feeds curiosity from exploring." Generally, both values bring most people happiness. So providing at least a little of both is a good option. But some people value one experience more than the other and that is what makes the deciding factor. Who you are building for can also matter. I personally value patterns a lot more than I do exploring. So I actually dislike common techniques like color variations in the floor and walls. This is what puts a deciding factor on which people will grab the attention on what type of viewer. While I recognize the other Hermit's talents, not all of their builds are for me.

@@EthosLab, There's a beauty in simplicity, which I personally adore. Your knack for diversifying the visual space above the ground, while maintaining a clean and straightforward ground level, truly shows a mastery of design. Even if you consider yourself just a 'redstone guy,' it's evident that the skills required for designing complex mechanisms influence your building capabilities. The minimalist foundations you use not only accentuate the complexity of the structures above but also resonate with those of us who appreciate the subtle interplay of patterns and the serene clarity they provide. Your ability to blend simplicity with intricate details creates spaces that are both inviting and visually cohesive. Even the texture on the top of the beehives contributes significantly.

Fun fact: The trick that Etho used on Iskall to confess to the nether portal is a form of prisoners dilemma. Where two partners are separated, and told that they’ve been ratted out even though they really haven’t, the officer says if they confess then they could have a shorter sentence. If both stay quite they both benefit in the form of no confessions given. If one confesses then they could get a shorter sentence but they screw over their partner, if both confess then most of the time their both screwed. It’s really interesting to watch cops put this tactic into play and Etho played this perfectly on Iskall.

One thing I really love about all of Etho's builds is that they almost all take extremely unorthodox block palettes, and still make them look extremely cohesive. Bdubs excels at making builds that look good from a distance, but Etho's you can explore and really get up close and personal with, and they honestly look even better the closer you get. I think the floor should stay clean. It looks good the way it is. Scar once said something to the effect of "you have to leave plainer parts on a build so that you can control the focus of someone viewing it." If everything is equally detailed, it's almost unsettling to look at. You don't know where to focus. I prefer to look at BdoubleO's ultra textured builds from far back because the distance blends the textures together more, but up close, they can be a little jarring or have a cluttered feeling. The walkway in question is a semi-enclosed smaller space, so I think the clean look helps to make it feel more open and bright.

Hey gamers. I've been a long time fan of Etho, practically grew up watching his videos. Ive been watching since near the beginning, before I had this account, before I had a computer, before I had anything, I'd sit with my aunt, and we'd watch Etho together. Through all my life troubles, I could aways go and watch an episode, be it with team Canada, OOGE, the lets play, or mod series, I could always sit and watch. In 2012, my father decided to adopt a puppy, and he named him Copper. Anytime a new eqisode came out, Id sit with him on the couch, and watch. He was my best friend. I grew up with him, spent every moment that I was home with him, which was the majority of the time outside of the school. Honestly, Im trying to make a long message saying how much I loved that dog, and just how some of my best memories with him were watching Etho, but Im struggling to get the words, if any can descirbe them. Etho, the way you build is super inspirational to me. Your explanations and process feel very “logical” and “reasoned” - like a designer would use - which makes sense as you’re such a talented technical minecrafter. Yet often this type of building can lead to overly simple and repetitive builds - like brutalism but in minecraft. Many other builders have a more “artistic” process, which leads to great results but for me is completely incomprehensible. I have no idea how people can just texture things on the fly while barely having to think about it. What you’ve mastered, in my opinion, is being able to include texture, colour variation, and organic / asymmetric elements (all of which the “artistic” builders do) - while still doing so with a “designer” mindset. You directly cite colour theory (and even RGB, lol), you explain how you try to balance variation and repetition, you iterate on designs, etc. What this leads to is (1) a wonderfully unique building style and (2) one that feels totally accessible to a more “designer”-minded person like myself. Of course, I don’t want to assume how you function. Perhaps the process feels very artistic to you, which is obviously great as well. Whatever the case, you do such a good job at _explaining why you are doing what you’re doing_ that I feel I can actually learn from it! Edit: I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t misunderstood: I find your builds and those by the more “artistic” builders both extremely great! Both have their own unique charm, neither being better than the other!! I’m not saying your style is more accessible because it’s simpler - far from it! Thanks for the great episodes! Have a nice day everyone!!

As a designer, yes. Our brains like pattern, but in the interiors industry we really try to go for subconscious patterns. Eg. Finishes that connect throughout, repetition in certain spaces. I personally try to avoid symmetry because it doesn’t help/enhance designs and in some ways can be quite unnerving to the eye. ✌🏻 I really love the garden area in your base because it references similar finishes while still keeping a ‘messy’ element of greenery. It’s setting a rule and then breaking it with purpose👌🏻

I really love Etho’s build style, and that it doesn’t necessarily involve texturing all the time. It’s bright and busy and detailed and beautiful even without it, and a plain wall or floor offers a great base for an otherwise very detailed build. Texturing has a time and place, and it’s nice to see building where it isn’t necessarily needed in every zone, but is scattered about in places like his crop farms that aren’t as visually busy otherwise. (Also because my stupid brain is super analytical and hates the idea of putting packed dirt in my wooden floors just to add visual variety, I like the reminder that I CAN make builds that can both be beautiful and make sense to me)

For the Mail System: You could automatically add the sender’s stamp as well. So the receiver knows from who it came from and is also able to send a response easily. And as side effect it is impossible to get infinitely traveling carts in the nether when someone messes up the stamp. It just gets returned to sender after one complete loop.

house and drum n bass producer here, the extra bits we add to change it up and keep it from getting too repetitive ( swapping every 4th snare with a snap/clap, toms at the end of a measure, other fills in between bars ) is called ear candy, which is super important to keep a listener engaged, eye candy in builds does the same thing for sure

The analogy comparing visual design to music made a lot of sense to me, and compelled me to recommend one of my favorite books on the subject, aptly titled “How Music Works” by David Byrne. The book covers many different social, psychological, and technological factors that have influenced the development of music over time, including a bit about how we’re naturally drawn to patterns and beats. One of the chapters I find particularly interesting connects the evolution in popular musical styles to changes in the architecture of the venues you’d expect to hear that music performed - Bach wrote intricate pieces for small ensembles designed to be played in close quarters filled with soft furniture, where Tchaikovsky wrote for full orchestras in cavernous opera houses and literal cannons as instruments. Music and architecture (including like… the architecture of your headphones and your car and stuff) has always gone hand-in-hand. Not entirely relevant to the main video but if anyone is reading this, I hope you have a good day and that you found this interesting! :)

The music thing makes even more sense when you remember pop music. The stuff is repetitive (esp in their choruses) but it also throws in uniqueness with different verse lyrics and bridges!! There's a reason they're In POPular music genre!

Re the texturing, if you watch that video where X, Cleo and Joe toured Gem's base last year youll hear X say that a plain floor is actually beneficial to him. Gem thinks this way as well. It allows other parts of the build to be "busy". Im loving your floors so far because they feel achievable for a builder like me.

Mental Time-space. Bdubs always builds as if these were old inhabited places, old villages from the "people before" as he tends to refer to his ideas, his builds are amazing like that. But yours is, well, yours. "Tis mine and I built it" so theres no crooked floorboards, no moss from the pass of time, nor jagged tree logs. A man building his home for his present, alive just in time.

On the topic of repetitive patterns, I find the 80/20 rule works quite well to make sure it's not overwhelming, but also not boring. 80% of cool colors and 20% of warm ones, 80% of repeated patterns and 20% of unique and detailed spots, 80% minor texturing and 20% bold and detailed textures etc (the reverse logic works as well to create very busy and overwhelming environments). It's something I learned from character design, but I think it works great in helping to bring attention to a focal point in your build

Hey Etho, I have a small suggestion for the mail system. If you automatically put the stamp of the sender in the minecart together with tye stamp of the receiver, not only would it be possible to notify the receiver who the mail was from, but also if the stamp was named to something invalid or had a typo, the mail would simply return to the sender once it does a full loop.

The exterior is looking amazing. Looking at it is like having a cup of something nice after a long day, your eyes just wanna go "ahhhh, that's better." The color combinations, the flow, the detail, the soothing greenery, it's just ... Von Sway at its most zen. I too like a cleaner build and less texturing. But then, I tend to build at small to medium-smallish scales, so it's easy to over texture and look like you've built a patchwork quilt instead of a building. :D Especially because my things are meant to be used close-up on a day-to-day basis, and not just looked at from a distance.

I just wanted to say, I really really like this style of editing. I'm a bit of an old head (like most people here now I presume) and this is pleasantly reminiscent of the older, "raw" videos I think you used to make. There was something really nice about following you through the process of getting materials together, or grinding on a tough build. I also think that this still has some of that kinda cut-down trimmed feeling to them that you really perfected in hermitcraft season 7. It's refreshing stepping away from content-optimized mega-cut attention burners and to just kinda chill.

Hey Etho! Hope you're having a good day. There's a great way to proactively deal with minecarts which MIGHT travel backwards. Using a curved rail (where the normal flow of the minecarts is unchanged), you can "catch" the minecart which is going the wrong way. Then a block or two away from the curved rail (off the normal track) you place a powered rail (power on) going into a block, which will turn the minecart around and keep it on track. Just a thought. Give the idea to tango if you don't want to take it on yourself. Amazing video as always!

I've been building a storage system sortof similar to the mail system you have. The idea is that you can send a request to a central storage system through the nether, and it returns items back to the sender automatically. (Similarly, you could sent items to be sorted and stored.) Feature creep lead me to never really finishing it, but it's cool to see people playing with chunkloaders!

A few thoughts on the mail system: - Currently, there is no way for the player to know that their package was ever sent out. If the dispenser at the bottom of the world is out of chest minecarts (envelopes), there's no easy way to know. - The only way that a player can get more envelopes is receiving letters. Let's say a hermit sends an advertisement to every mailbox-owning hermit. Then they have so so few envelopes left! At least having some indicator that they're low on envelopes would be a nice touch. - Introducing a new hermit to the mail system will get more complicated with each new hermit, since stamps must necessarily be standardized. Is the intention that every new mailbox setup will coincide with a package to all hermits with a new set of stamps? If someone addresses something to GoodTimesWithScar and not just Scar, the letter will never go anywhere. - What if the player sends something with an invalid stamp? Will it just go in circles forever?
