The time between the lockouts 1994 - 2004 was named the clutch and grab era, the era of "the trap". It´s dominator was Peter Forsberg, "The force", "Foppa", Peter the Great.
Speed, strength, hands, vision, anticipation, balance, finish, compete. Forsberg possessed it all, an amazing player on every level. There is nothing on earth like hockey
I got to see a bunch of his games here in Denver from the mid '90s on and feel VERY fortunate that I did. Just an unbelievable talent. Shooting, puck handling, offense, defense, strong as hell... he did it all, the total package. I worked in a huge sports bar and met LOTS of athletes over the years, as well as some tv celebrities and musicians. Meeting and having a beer with him was the only time I've ever been starstruck!!
From a Wings fan born and raised in Detroit, proud to say that the only jersey in my closet without a winged wheel on it, has "Forsberg" across the back. one hell of a player.
@liukangstoupee Lidstrom is the greatest two-way defenseman ever, but I wouldn't say that there is one GOAT amongst Swedish players. My list of the greatest Swedes in no particular order is this: Peter Forsberg Nicklas Lidstrom Mats Sundin Daniel and Henrik Sedin
As a sharks fan I hated peter forsberg, I watched him destroy us too many times growing up. But now I look back and I respect what he did. He was such a phenomenal player definitely one of the best.
You got to know where we came from to understand where we're at. If you're not old enough to have seen this guy play in the NHL you will never really quite understand his greatness and why he won two cups, two WC and two olympic gold medals and is considered one of the best at the game in history even though he had a fairly short NHL career(700 games) due to all the injurys he got being the best player in the world during this specific era and the abuse he took. Simply a god.
Truth so true..I played through this era and earlier and people have no idea how hard it was to play. The abuse and strength needed to be good and he had it all and fought through it all. The best overall Ive seen in this era..They need to allow a little more in todays era.To many soft calls now..Cant even touch a dude and bam in the box.sorry this era was some of the most exciting hockey youll ever see wings avs man
As a Finn we love to hate Swedish players, at the same time we have the most respect for them and the combination of those two things make each clash in the hockey rink an event, some more memorable than others, still it is always a special moment. Peter Forsberg gave us Finnish hockey fans some bitter lessons, so we were afraid of him, hated him, loved him and marveled at him. Sundin loved to taunt, that was his style, Forsberg was gracious off the ice; after going through this crazy fucking hooking and cross-checking etc, and never complained about his injuries. My kudos to Foppa.
Finland and Sweden has been the same nation for hundreds of years. There's no competition, you're awesome and we love u. Foppa is just too gooð though.
I'd love to see a highlight video of every time Forsberg laid a devastating hit on somebody, while he was in control of the puck. Nobody did that better.
All great plays, but I have seen a lot of plays from Peter that's better than half of these. In my opinion, Peter is one of the top 5 best players ever. It's so sad that he had all those injuries! But that's the price for his physical terror.
Having lived in Colorado at that time I was fortunate to have watched those glory days and Peter was so much better than any compilation can really show. Still, this was a beautiful countdown.
Best all around game in NHL history in my opinion. Scoring, Passing, Checking, Fighting, Defense. Ppl forget he was prob the best passer in the league. He was the lebron james of hockey when healthy.
The thing with Peter Forsberg that I think many are forgetting about, is that Forsberg wasn´t the kind of superstar, scorer like the other players he is compared with. Peter Forsberg was a team player and not a fancy player - team first, always!
Right, his career high off the top of my head was 29 to 32 goals. If he was more selfish and shot first more often he could have been a perennial 60 goal scorer. No doubt about it.
His greatest strength was his biggest weakness. The heart to never give up and push past pain is what ruined his career, but also what made him so great
Forsberg is my favorite player of all time and the only forward who never needed an enforcer for he was his own. The most complete 2-way player to ever play in the NHL.
I've always said Crosby reminds me a lot of Forsberg! Only difference is Crosby doesn't have to deal with clutch & grab. Can you imagine Forsberg in today's game!
Personally I think he's a top 15 to ever play. 1.25 points per game, 2 cups, 2 gold medals, calder, 4th all time in assists per game, 8th all time in points per game, scoring title, believe he won the hart or the lindsay as well. He also totally changed the perception of Swedish players.
Well look him up not to many players in the World have earned 7 Norris Trophys. NHL-gold/WC-gold and Olympic-gold all in one season =Triple Gold Club etc. etc.
FANTASTIC VIDEO!!! and this is coming from a die-hard Detroit Red Wings fan. i will always prefer the Swedish players over other europeans and north americans. thank you olle
"Phillytheflyerable": It's not that easy to get all the clips in the quality that you want. It was more important for me to show the real Forsberg top 20 plays, rather than "Forsberg top 20 among the clips that I can get in the right quality".
Great player - big and strong, could make 180 degree turn on the coin from full speed, receive/return a hit and at the same time keep full control of the puck. All time 4th in assists per game (min 300 assist) - respect.
This guy should be on more top 10 lists, number 7, anyone notice he undressed two hall of famers, Coffey and Lidstrom. He was a bad man Peter Forsberg.
All accolades have already been written. I’ll just reiterate them, because watching Peter Forsberg videos still gives me goosebumps, borderline tears. He was an absolute ice hockey phenom! What most younger folks don’t get is that Forsberg’s career coincided with the worst spectator-friendly and hockey-unaesthetic era of clutch-and-grab. Technical forwards were much more easily shut down without drawing opposing team penalties. It’s of course all hypothetical, and you can’t compare eras, but I honestly believe that Peter Forsberg would have surpassed Wayne Gretzky’s points per game average had he played either before the 90’s and early 2000’s, or after 2005.
As a student living in Sweden, I got up on my bike 03.30 in the morning to watch the Avalanche playoffs because of this guy. He was worth it. Goddamn was he dominant.
Was it against the Sharks in their zone? I think I saw this too, seemed like he held the puck for a minute, unbelievable. I wouldn't be surprised if it happened more than once
#3 at 15:00. Remember seeing it live with my family, we all stood up screaming with joy. I screamed so hard that I literally saw stars infront of my eyes.
Forsberg was good enough to be a 150 point player on a good team in the 80s. Agree he had a run of several years when he was the best player in the league
As a Avs fan I would love to see Forsberg play in today's game without all the holding and grabbing. He would lead the league in assists without a doubt. His combination of toughness and skill was unmatched.
His greatest strength was his biggest weakness. The heart to never give up and push past pain is what ruined his career, but also what made him so great
This is my second time here I believe, I have to say the idea of using this music is nothing short of brilliant. Fantastic video. 👍🍺 Awesome player, hands down.. he was an animal.
I once asked Forsberg ( foolishly ) if he remembered that play when he charged the net with a guy draped all over him and he scored anyway. He just smiled at me. I immediately realized I was an idiot but he was still kind and asked back, " which one? ". Really nice guy and of course one of the best to play the game. By the way, the play I was recalling was 13:25 , just in case you were still wondering Pete.
noooooooo nooooooooooo i do not ever wanna see that goal of his when he ties the game against finland... i´ve managed to avoid it for 12 years and now........ NOOOOOOO
i wouldnt say beautiful as so much as it was just a complete and utter collapse by us Finns, just like the whole game. dont think im still quite over it....
Swedes like to bolster the credit to bolster their egos. When they win, they won despite the cheating, bad reffing, being injured hurt etc. Winning at all odds because they're just so great. When they lose, they were cheated, refs were paid, and, oh, by the way, they didn't want to win or weren't really trying anyway. That's a Swede in a nutshell almost down to the last one. Thankfully there's only 5 million of them.
Awesome video. Great job in setting up the era haha loved the terminator music to top it off. I was lucky enough.to see Forsberg play for my Flyers later on. He was a perfect fit for the city. But then again would be a perfect fit anywhere.
How I wish he could've have stayed healthy...I started to love hockey a bit late in my life and by that time he was already playing like half of his seasons. He's still my favorite player ever though. These highlights are great souvenirs
i was born in '86, and wasn't really introduced to hockey until i was 8 or 9, so this dude was my first hockey hero. i knew gretzky was the goat cuz thats what everyone was telling me, and i was a penguins fan then so i loved lemieux but i didn't get to see much of him before columbus got a team. i saw a lot of prime forsberg tho, and he was special.
You feel like there are too many Philly highlights in here. Forsberg was a beast for years in Colorado, and did things as impressive as the Philly highlights on almost a regular basis.
***** I was laughing at that,he was literally hanging on while Mario just continued to skate :D that one clip alone proves why Mario is one of the best, such will to score
evilTaker90V2 But you need to compare the NHL of Mario's pre-(1st) retirement years and the league when he came back. Mario was disgusted with the league when he returned. Mario is up there with the exclusive group of Gordie, Orr and Gretzky. Mario would never have scored 199 pts in the "Clutch & Grab Era."
and thats just it with todays new pussified nhl the will of a player is no longer really demonstrated another aspect of the game that has been removed sadly
We can always thank a prima donna who didn't want to play for the Nordiques for helping to assemble one of the most fun teams ever to watch, and who also won my favourite D, Bourque, a cup.
One of the most unstoppable player my favorite Avalanche player Peter Forsberg he can't be replaced if you see him skating towards you you will be sorry you got in his way.
There will never be another player like Peter the Great! The GOAT of taking over a game and putting his team on his back! But Mackinnon is the next Avs savior!!
yes game is too easy now and not rought enough, removing the central line changed the game and it doesnt require skill to do a long pass or wait for it at the other end
@@wildinc.7720 the legends like Forsberg etc wouldn't be able to play in this "modern hockey" they removed a lot of strategy when they removed the red line, now players are fast ya but they can just dumb the puck from 1 side to the other anybody can do that with a lob etc its retarded no strategy in the neutral zone also players like Stevens for examples would always be on the penalty box they would have a very hard time to adapt to this gay fragile hockey with no check no hook etc I love modern hockey but its just different players today have it easy a lot
Cloud Strife I hear you. I simply meant them together on the same team in the sense that certain players today could easily shine in the old days. MacKinnon, McDavid, Pastrnak, Benn, etc are all examples of that. There’s ones you can play the game well and there’s those that are the epitome of the sport regardless of the directive.
Kawhi Leonard of today's NBA reminds me a lot of Peter Forsberg's mentality... Quiet, humble, ultra-talented but strangely introverted guys who can withstand a lot of abuse only to put even more fear in their opponents with their enduring strength and superior game...
90's was a complete war zone. My god. the size and strenght of the players then compared to now is night and day. Lindros, Lemieux, Jagr, All over 6 foot 4 230 lbs and Forsberg was incredible.
