My hero 3 black works fine and i have no 4kTV. So there is no need to upgrade, and i think that fits to the most gopro owners. It feels like gopro tries the same strategy like Apple. Just my opinion. You dont need it. But its new and cool. And it has this....and this, what u of course will never use....or need . But it becomes a status symbol with this price. You know what i mean.

MicBergsma you should do that with moving objects in the frame, it change the battery life results. I did the battery life test with the H1 vs H3 with the gopros attached to a fan to have the movement.

I recently filmed an event using only my new Hero 4. I filmed on and off for exactly 4 hours. Just keep turning the Hero 4 off in between shots. This was on my 3rd charge cycle. We'll see how it holds up...

Everyone trying to satisfy there economical decision of NOT upgrading but I can say, I have a HERO3 black and my mate has a HERO4. We went skiing and his footage absolutely pumped mine. Alot more usable film and editing options so.. maybe don't upgrade but just have 2 angles? Hero4 + Hero3 = Hero7

For those asking if they should upgrade from the 3+, not at all unless you have money burning a hole in your pocket !! wait until the 4+ or 5 comes out. Those that have a Hero 2 or 3 then it may be a worth while upgrade. It looks like GoPro are doing releases every 8 months or so now, so if you upgrade now form a 3+ you are only going to be pissed off when the next version comes out. I would like to see a test of the battery life with the LCD on, I would guess it will destroy the run time. To be honest the LCD is a nice feature but with the wide angle of the GoPro lens it is pretty easy to get the frame correct plus you have the app to also frame shots if really needed.

Well the Hero 4 Black lasts a lot longer than my normal Hero 3 Black, so I'm off to the store to get one! Plus I use slow motion a lot, so the high res slow motion is totally worth it to me. I was going to get a second camera anyways, almost got a Hero 3 Silver, luckily I saw Mic's video of unboxing the Hero 4!

I'm glad you made this comparison. I feel pretty good about the result actually, I've had my hero3+ for just less than a year and I was afraid the hero4 would be a big enough upgrade for me to want to switch but honestly, with worse batt life and no 240fps at 720p, I don't feel it's worth it. 4k does not have the support right now to warrant the main focus of the upgrade of the camera. I would have much preferred that they develop higher framerates at existing resolutions. Might have to wait for the 4+ or hero5

Correct me if I'm wrong but I believe the new batteries need to be cycled a few times to reach maximum potential. This is why the older 3+ battery lasted longer.

CellusNZ Even the 120 fps quality in 1080p is bad. I am a very big Gopro fan but this is a let down for me.

2 hours recording with silver? ... what am i doingwrong? 1080p 60fps, i lose my battery after 40-50 minutes, or maximum 1 hour 15 minutes . ok Fps effects battery life, but i think what you are shooting also effects? cause maybe putting the camera in a room without a movement just recording a wall, it can go up to 2 hours. but while snowboarding or doing outdoor activites, the movement the camera recording makes camera consume mor epower?

One thing is to record dinamic lanscape, diferent light, moving objects ( aka ''real world'' = needs lot of processing and energy consumption ) other thing is to let your camera record on a shelf a wall :)) This ''test'' has no relevance in the real world lol.

Chainsaw Dude And their was no real reason to change the 4 battery compartment from the Hero 3. The Wasabi bacpac was the greatest thing to add to a gopro. Now they have changed it because they want to be able to gouge people for their own in house bacpac that doesn't even come close to wasabi's

Good stuff Mic but testing cams in water proof housing would provide much different results. Heat generated within housing makes cam run hotter thus battery life is less. My 3+ Black runs 145 - 150 min in water housing which isn't bad

Nice comparison... any idea how long the Hero4 Black edition would last during time-lapse sequences? Say a shot every 5 seconds... would you get an hour out of that? The short battery life is a huge drawback for me and functions such as time lapse when I need a couple of hours out of the rig. Thank you as always for your videos!

HERO4 has a new, more powerful processor. It's normal that it requires more energy, and because the battery did not change significantly compared with the HERO3+, it would be inevitable that the HERO4 Black had a shorter battery life than the 4 Silver or the 3+... It's not GoPro's fault, it's because the evolution of batteries is slow. Now GoPro faces a dilemma here: if they want to keep improving their cameras, they will have to increase the battery size, or their cameras will have less and less battery life... The problem is that if they increase the battery size, they will also have to increase the camera size....... Maybe they will kinda optimize the 4 Black, in terms of energy, with a firmware release, but don't expect miracles here. If you want a top notch equipment you must be prepared to live with these drawbacks. It would be good to have the best of both worlds, but as I said, at the moment that would only be possible if they had increased the size of the camera.

All cameras are set to 1080/24 in this video so the Hero4 Black is loading it's processor the least of all the camera's. Most times this means longer battery life just like recording 1080/24 requires less energy than recording 1080/48. This is not the case here, hope this could be fixed with firmware because the processor is using to much power for its task. Also that it's not gopro's fault they have bad battery life but it's because of battery evolutions?!?! They switched from one processor to another witch had a higer energy consumption and than also supply it with a smaller battery.... There isthe real fault. I do like the gopro and really like the Hero 4 but for many reasons other than 4k. But the batterylife is the biggest problem they should adress.

Bart Meenks Do you have a GoPro already? Say, a 3 or a 3+? If you do, imagine they had increased the size of the 4... All your housings wouldn't fit, you would have to buy new ones, just because they increased the size of the camera. That alone would disappoint a lot of people. If now you complain about the battery life, I imagine people complaining about the size increase! OMG it would be the end of the world!! And yes... Batteries are not like processors. Processors have been evolving like crazy in the past years. In one year they doubled the performance, but that is not the case with batteries. If you want more energy you will have to increase the battery size, period! At this moment there is no credible alternative to Li-Ion, so, on that matter GoPro can't do much. GoPro changed the processor to give you more processing power! You want resolution, right?... you want fps, right?... but you don't want them to switch the processor?.... Can you explain this paradox? How do you manage to get what you want with the same hardware? And yes, I also hope they can minimize the trouble via firmware, but it will be marginal... A processor with a different architecture that requires more energy is what it is, and if you choose to buy a Black you already know what to expect. However, if you want more battery life, and if you can live without 4k, you can go with the Silver. I guess they haven't switched the processor on that one.

I totally agree with you all points. I find it strange they reduced the battery size while increasing the power consuption while most people say the only bad thing of the gopro is its battery life. Ok a battery backpack can solve much of the problems. I like the fact they kept the same size camera so no complains there. It's a paradox as you explained, we can't have everything! :(

Skipping Hero 4 all together My new 3Plus silver with lcd is great for my filming of family and 200 qx flight videos. remove lcd for flight and its lighter then both the new 4s.Ill pgrade when the 5 comes out or maybe wait for the 6...Happy fimling

Hey, I'm looking at purchasing my first GoPro camera and need a bit of advice. I am currently undecided between the Hero 3+ Black or the Hero 4 Silver. I know on paper these two cameras are very similar but I was wondering in terms of actual video quality is there much of a difference? I'm not sure if I really need the display (since I could always sync up to my phone) but I guess it would be a nice bonus. Other than that is there any justification to paying 399$ for the Hero 4 compared to 349$ for the Hero 3+ (current best price I can find but I assume it will drop more). Could someone elaborate more on the topic? I'd love to see side by side shots like people have done for previous GoPro models. Thanks!!!

Always wanted to know this cos of battery life on 4silver must stay low when screen on

i'm planning to get the hero4 silver + battery bacpack. the question is, the battery of the bacpack is from the hero3, am i right? if so, anyone knows if the dual charger sold by gopro fits both models? or only the hero4 battery... please help!

how can hero3 battery hold 2hours if my holds just 1 hour? it`s not stock battery?

Waitwhat!? A faster CPU consumes less energy than a slower one if the job to be executed is the same. If all the cameras are recording in 1080 24fps the Hero4 Black should last longer than the other two. Poorly programmed firmware? Hope they fix this with an update soon.

H4 would need a 1450mAh battery to get same runtime. :-( 130/104*1160 = 1450

Merci pour ces tests. Donc selon 3 points la "4" black est une régression par rapport à la 3+ : -couleurs rougeatres en basse lumière sur la 4 moins bien que la 3+ -autonomie batterie 30% moins bonne que la 3+ -trappe batterie inaccessible en Frame mount sur la 4, accessible sur la 3+ ... Espérons que la 4 laisse la possibilité de recharge USB en continu durant une vidéo ( même SANS batterie à l'intérieur ) comme avec la 3+ !!! ( sorry for french : in a hurry this morning ! ;-) )

lets speculate.. by this rate a 1080/60 fps video the hero 4 is done in roughly 60 minutes? jeez. considering a hero 3+black can do 1.30 hours on 60 fps. That is not an upgrade at all from a hero 3 black with a 1 hour and 10 minutes record duration
