I like to imagine the Vikings simply had inhabited England and through there recruited Celtic mercenaries such as the Highlander and shaman, I also kinda think that the Vikings made it all the way to North America which explains why Vikings have potatoes in story mode.

The Devs themselves based her off the picts, she is celtic not Nordic. You can see them confirm it in their livestream release of year 1 season 4

The Highlander is different because the Highlanders come from the same origin as the Gallowglass whom were vikings who settled in Scotland. I know you don't know much about ancient history, particularily archeologically which is fine because the developers don't know either, but theres absolutely zero celtic things about her, especially little pictish. When most of her things are named after the norse while performing literal norse sacrifices in her executions it is borderline insane to claim that shes anything other than norse. Shes a fantasy volva, that is all. No, the weapons are not pictish, the axe is distinctly norse shaped, pictish axes had a rounded blade with a thick point of connection to the wood, more like a modern hatchet. Neither of them had Kukris but the norse had the very similar Seax, the picts did not have knives like that, they used spears and roman-like swords and hatchet-like axes. They were painted, just like germanic tribes were, nome of these people had tattoos but the vikings in the game all have tattoos because the vikings TV show made it seem like something all vikings had. None of this indicates picts, shes no closer to a pict than she is to a zulu warrior. 100% norse.

You can't just take something from one culture and go "hmm, this fits into mine, yoink."

@@vergil8833Dude you're getting too caught up on historical accuracy. Step back and realize we're discussing for honor. The foundations for a lot of characters can have a basis in history but its largely free reign with creative license. Oversized weapons, leather armor, tattoos, dual wielding, etc. Clearly Ubisoft sees the viking faction as the barbarian faction. Thats why we get an abundance of leather, painted, and shoeless armor. Jorm is a perfect example of this. I still want historically influenced viking characters but I'd much rather expand into surrounding cultures than get another shoeless entirely ahistorical character. An axe and shield viking is about the only viking I can imagine adding at this point without rehashing in some way. Besides, the introduction of the chinese faction was dumb to me since we already had roman knights and scottish vikings. Ubisoft already made it clear they could "reach" outside faction lines for similar characters. So I don't really understand your "cultural yoink" comment because cultural mixing within the factions is already a thing.

@@krakenmckraken9128 The cultural yoink has nothing to do with the game, it has everything to do with trying to explain the shaman as a pictish thing when she is very clearly based on something very germanic. I would much rather they expand to another faction rather than fill the viking faction up with celts and slavs since they haven't actually gone into historical vikings at all. I think the weapon limitation is silly since they have already shown that they're willing to have multiple of each weapon, theres like 3 katanas now plus a straight chinese version of the katana, so to add another dane axe for a Huskarl hero for example should be perfectly fine. Another great viking character concept would be something based on the heros of the sagas whom usually just carry a single one handed sword, like the wielders of Tyrfing, Beowulf, Sigurd the dragonslayer and so on. So a viking character who wears cloth and only carries one sword while using his free hand to perform viking martial arts (glima) is what the viking faction actually needs. Not a bunch of dirty people in leather. And the Highlander isn't all that outside of the culture since what leads to the highlander type of warrior in Scotland comes from the norse settlers. It started with the norse people who settled in Scotland and became mercenaries in ireland, they were called the Gallowglass and they did wield famous two handed swords. So the highlander in the game isn't too far off since he can be considered a decendant of viking culture. They should add a new factionc alled "the forest people" or something then they can put in a bunch of stragglers, caltic warriors, slavic warriors, maybe even a stray viking in form of the Varangians whos like a hybrid between the knights and vikings the same faction as a completely nude pict.

So just because the picts weren't Vikings doesnt mean that Viking Heros cant be Inspired by Non Viking warriors

You make some interesting points, but I stand by my position. This has nothing to do with trying to make a norse thing out of the scots, because that was never my intention. The Volva are probably a good pick for Shamans origins, but they were not warriors, they were more well respected in history than shaman is in For Honor, and were more of seers than combatants. Basically mystics instead of warriors. In fact, Shaman in For Honor barely acts like a mystic. Nothing about her lore indicates she is a spiritual guide or guru. They just call her Shaman. The shaman in For Honor paint and tattoo their bodies and faces, like Picts. They fight wildly and without mercy, like Picts were reportedly known for, and they were seemingly more savage than other northern tribes and people, as the Romans described them, and that's similar to how Shaman stands out from the other Vikings. I never once said that the Celtic Picts were the originators of the Vikings, I was saying that in the context of FOR HONOR the Shamans could have belonged to an older forgotten culture that the Vikings spawned from. I was not referring to real life world history. I see a lot of going points in your comment, and I think that you might even have a good case there about the Volva, but I'm sticking with my stance. You're free to respectfully disagree, but I think that Shaman just fits better as a Pict in terms of her character in For Honor than a Volva.

@@RavenKnightYT I completely agree on the fact that the volva were not warriors, but that is in reality the case for most women in history. The existance of shieldmaidens and amazons have been extremely overstated by pop culture when they are in reality not represented in the graves we find. They sure are represented in the sagas, but so far theres only 2 graves that might suggest warrior women and they are not without flaws. Since one is just a female skull with battle damage on it, and the other is a woman buried like a man but with no battle damage and seems to have actually been a wealthy huntress as suggested by her lopsided shoulders, something which is common in skeletons from horse archers. So while the volva were not warriors in any way, neither were most women, so if the game developers can take the liberty with female raiders, berserkers, and so on, then surely they would with the volva aswell. And regarding why she is just called the shaman I honestly think it comes down to how awkward the word "volva" is in english. I think all the early for honor character names "other than the samurai" were chosen for their simplicity rather than history. I would have loved it if the Raider was actually named Huskarl and the Warlord was named Jarl, stuff like that. Regarding the way the picts fought, they were surely also all men in their warrior ranks, but I don't really think the Romans saw them as more fierce than the likes of the goths and vandals. They surely saw them as more fierce than the other celts since the Romans conquered those celts, but they never got far into germania, and they never even saw Scandza, the land where the goths and vandals came from whom would spell the end of the Western Roman Empire. The same place the germanic seeresses came from. While the picts were fierce in defending their homeland, the germanics were firce in their invasions of Rome, most of whom were also bare chested, and some like the Harii were known to be painted aswell. But I don't actually think that he tattoos in For Honor are supposed to be based on anything but the vikings TV show. Iben Fadlan writes about seeing tattooed vikings but we have no other reasons to believe that the vikings were tattooed, but it has become such a big pop culture thing to have tattooed vikings stemming from the vikings show, so that is basically why the for honor devs put it in the game. It's the same source for their leather armor which is also nonsense. Thats also where those haircuts every viking in for honor has, those weird mohawk pony tail things. Ragnar Lothbrok was cool in the show, but that hairstyle drives me nuts. Most of the vikings, men and women, should have long light brown or blond hair, not black mohawks and eye shadow, but thats the unfortunate turn of pop culture. And ah, regarding the picts being the origins of the vikings I must have just mixed up if you were making a suggestion for the game lore or making a statement about history. My bad. One of the main reasons why I disagree with the idea of the picts or anyone but the vikings or viking ancestors being represented in the viking faction is because I simply want another faction for that. I think the vikings are very poorly represented in the game so I'd want more vikings who follow history more accurately to be added to the faction rather than having other cultures fill up those viking slots. The Kyoshin was a good example of how they stepped closer to history in many ways for the samurai, and I really want that for the vikings aswell. But if vikings could be celts and slavs then that dream would be gone. I hope they add a new faction called "The scattered Tribes" or something like that where they can not only add celts and slavs, but they can even add huns and mongolians aswell.

@@vergil8833 I mean, I feel like the Mongols would be better paired with the Wu Lin. They did form their own dynasty in China after all and they had a lot of history in their relationship with China, especially their predecessors the “Xiongnu”. Besides, Normadic horsemen were in a way the Chinese equivalent to the Celts, Germanic, and yes, Huns in Europe.

Like to add that Picts are not Scottish but we're Brythonic , since a person who understands Welsh could easily understand Pictish . Also that the closest other Brythonic language to Welsh , Cumbric was from a area right next to Pictish lands
