Something that I always found humorous is the gem treasure card describing a priceless gemstone being casually tucked away in an old boot and left in an orc filled dungeon. Feels like something a kobold might do in a hurry, I love it.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Dors it even make a difference to the wearer if you stab with a dagger or with a short sword? Its not "fighting" at all. Imagine how a fighter would professionally fight with a dagger whereas a mage would just try to stab with it because that is how mages fight. To reflect this in the game each weapon simply should be less effective in the hands of the mage. And probably more effective in the hands of the Barbarian then stated on the card. But then we are of course in the realm of homebrewing more complex rules ...

11. Roll to move. How did you miss that? 12. Drink healing potion when you are dead. What a dramatic pose to behold. 13. The barbarian being the only one with a superior weapon when he is supposed to be the most poor of the bunch. He wears animal pelts! 14. Waiting decades to see a werewolf in the game as the one in the spell artwork. 15. The strongest spell is a genie that can one-punch most bosses and we have no idea where it came from.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Год назад
Roll to move is something I have discussed in other videos when I was specifically talking about rules that people don't like, which wasn't the direction I was going for this particular video. I don't find roll and move silly or amusing, and I actually think it's necessary inside of combat situations for this game (although outside of combat I used unthreatened movement). And drinking potions when you are dead isn't a think in the 1989 and 1990 European editions. You just straight up die if you run out of body points. The barbarian is from a North tribe and probably made his own sword, just as he made his own clothes. It makes sense for the warrior to have the chonky sword. The funniest thing about the genie for me is that it's stupidly strong, but when you use it, if you want to, you can just ask him to be a manservant and get the door for you.

I've recently played through hero quest with my dad for a nostalgia trip (now on Kellers keep) and using the companion app so he can be some heroes too and its much harder and better with multi wound enemies. But as such I've found the genie to be a real let down, they almost always whiff their rolls and maybe take 1 wound, 2 max. Maybe I should start just having them get the door! 😂

roll to move is one of the most basic parts of a board game. yes, there are prominent exceptions to this basic "rule" fixed (per piece) movement in chess or variable movement in checkers, candy land has you draw cards to move, and in "the Game of Life" you spin a wheel. a lot of kid games you flick a spinner to pick your number. the barbarian spending all of his money on a nice sword makes sense to me. there werewolf you speak of appeared in 1992 (which had a tile and also the plastic giant wolf figure). genies come out of bottles/lamps. the last minute heal saving thing was introduced in the North American rules (1990) and is equivalent to similar concepts in video games. it's all a matter of perspective. the whole game is "silly" but it's fun and memorable, so it lives on...!
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Год назад
But in Europe we had to wait until 2023 and a new edition of the game to get a werewolf, which I believe is what ThatAnimeSnob was referring to.

I enjoy the concept of the pass through walls spell. You either get ambushed by a whole bunch of monsters or just straight up die in solid rock. Not a lot of use cases for that spell except I guess getting into a room you already know is there to reinforce your other heroes.

I wish the old US set came with painting instructions. That would have been really helpful back in the day. (It was not until years later with the Citadel Colour Paint Set that filled me in about painting miniatures -- also, extra Chaos Warrior!) I too really like that Nothing card. When I discovered the UK version of HQ at Ye Olde Inn years ago, and looked at the treasure cards, I really like the range of Treasure cards -- including that Gold card the one were you loose time picking up 1d6x10 gold from across the room. In fact, I like to use six Nothing cards to fill out (balance) the Treasure Deck to take account the extra Treasure cards from the expansions. Plus, I really like the Hand Axe and Spears. Its a shame they were snubbed in the US Armory. I find a lot of really neat things with the UK rules sets, expansions and that Marvel Winter Special, as well as learning who they were influential to the development of the US rules and expansions. That is, how the dagger from the US game was based on the Magical Throwing Dagger from the UK Return of the Witch Lord set, and how the Marvel Winter Special was basically a test-bed for the rules seen in The Frozen Horror. I mean, the Ice Gargoyle is basically the Frozen Horror but with no spells and a weakness to fire-based attacks.

You can be rocking full plate, helmet, and shield. But if you're paralyzed, they don't protect you at all. 😆 The Champion title was serious bragging rights way back when. I would have saved up five hundred gold and paid to get it. In fact, that would have made it even better at the tables I played. It also meant you became more protective of your character. If they died, you couldn't just bring in a replacement Champion, after all. Edit: Well, I say 'tables', but we usually played on the floor back then.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Год назад
The orcs need to start carrying can openers. I think the champion status was too easy to gain, really. Over the 14-quest core campaign, you could die three times and still end up with a champion by the time the campaign ended. It's definitely a concept that they could have done a lot more with. I think it would have been a great addition.

Mine just sits in boxes decaying and I really don't have a desire to to restore the stuff and show it off. I have plenty of things to work on and display already. Even the Masters stuff, which is super cool, would be much better cared for in some collectors hands. As far as HQ, and Battlemasters, which I forgot is there too, it's mostly the box size and storing them that keeps me from moving them to my place. It also gives me something to look at when I visit. I have some I think have not been mentioned yet: - All body armours in the game are valid for anyone, don't matter their size. The Dwarf may interchange his plate mail with the Barbarian and it will perfectly fit in both, although the second double in size to the first.😂 - All Kellar's Keep quests happen in a vacated and ultrasecret passage through the mountains, however the Heroes can visit an Armory or Alchemist's Shop between quests without any restriction.😂 - The Barbarian is the Hero who most of the players want to play with since he is supposed to be the most powerful one, however, the only advantages the Barbarian has compared with the Dwarf is the first one has just 1 more Body Points and starts with a better weapon, which will be easily bought by the Dwarf after playing the first one or two quests.😂 Nevertheless, the best thing about HeroQuest is even with those kind of silly details, we still love the game, they are part of its charm, imho.

In terms of Mind points you are right. It feels weird that it was more important for later instances. Especially if you consider the lack of chaos spells. The barbarian is the best you can throw at the enemys without worrying too much. I always thought the title was the goal. In the US version (if I am correct) you get it after completing all quests. For the usage I thought it was for hiring the mercenaries (Mage of Morcar) later on. Maybe the fireplaces are "magical" and work in ways that make no sense to us "normal" people, but Heroquest has it's own rules ;) For the fire mage I understand it the way. He is immune to all fire spells and therefore it would make less (no) sense to have fire spells there. My oldest brothher loves "nothing". He always laugh, when it is drawn ;) Have you ever managed to complete the master edition? I would love to see people trying this ... torture of a mission :( For me it is unbeatable, because of several reasons.

I don't think the idea of champions was really a gameplay element in the NA rules. There's a throwaway line in the introduction of the quest book that says if you complete the whole campaign you will be acclaimed as champions of the realm, but it's arguably just fluff as I don't believe it's ever reiterated what that means in the rules, and I don't believe that title is ever used for any purpose. To the best of my knowledge it isn't required to hire mercs in The Frozen Horror, for example. In the Euro expansion Wizards of Morcar it does indeed say that the mercs will work for a great champion as long as they get paid. I don't think that was necessarily what they were thinking when they first introduced the champion rule as Wizards was four expansions after the core set came out. It was possibly an attempt to give the title a purpose, but after so long since the core adventure it could also just be argued as fluffy rules language. After all, if you have churned through the core game, Kellar's Keep, Return of the Witch Lord, and Against the Ogre Horde, you are going to be considered a champion regardless. The problem with The Fire Mage is that he is in a dungeon filled with enemies that aren't immune to fire magic and the wizard loses a lot of his combat potency. Plus, you lose the courage spell. I've never actually bothered to play The Dark Company. I didn't have it as a kid, and while I have all the rules and the mission downloaded, I've never got around to it.

I actually just went back and checked the Wizards of Morcar rules and they do capitalise the word "Champion" when talking about the mercs, which does lend weight to the idea you need that title to recruit them. That's a good catch. But having said that, it's not really an issue. The only way to lose the title is to steal Prince Magnus's gold (as far as I recall), and even then there are easy ways around it such as having one hero steal all the gold so the other three can become champions, or "retiring" the naughty heroes, but having them pass all of their equipment to their suspiciously similar replacements. Those replacements only need to complete three missions to get their champion status. But of course, now I'm being purposefully silly, and in reality I would just rule that by the time they reach Wizards of Morcar the heroes have done enough good to expunge any misdemeanours. And anyway, if a hero died during Wizards of Morcar, I would still allow the replacement to hire mercs anyway. I'm a nice Morcar. I must say, I do really like the fact they added a moral choice for the heroes - steal the money or become champions. It's just a shame they didn't do more with it, and they removed that element from the NA version completely and just wouldn't allow the heroes to do the bad thing.

@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring First I must say I am not so familiar with the lore (I wasn't so lucky to play this game back in the days. I just got my hands recently on it. Still I bought all 1989 versions (base, kellars keep, return of the witch lord, Against the ogre hord and the wizard of Morcar, Frozen Horror and Mage of the Mirror are insane expensive ;_; ). I am happy, when my players have fun. When we first tried the Master Edition everyone started a new character and the mage player rightfully complained this was madness. Special rules and the problem of having a huge dungeon with respawning monsters makes this quest impossible with normal rules. Even with 1 body point for the creatures. The Problem with characters dying in the sense of real loss, you have to sort of repeat the former missions. Certain equip is essential in terms of beating the expansions etc. Maybe a really good Team could sort of manage Kellars keep, because the main goal can be achieved by ignoring rooms unless you have to. Fun fact at the end. I smile, when my heroes are having several weapons and other stuff with them. The rules allow for access and switching immediately to another "weapon set". It is stupid, but funny.

I'm sure you're already aware, but do note that Wizards of Morcar and Against the Ogre Horde were designed for the European rules set, while Mage of the Mirror and Frozen Horror were designed for the North American rules set, so whichever rules you use, you will have to do some customisation work to use all those expansions (or use some of the custom conversions other people have come up with). Do remember that as long as the monsters don't nick a dead heroes stuff, another hero can pick it up, so as long as you don't have a total party kill you should be able to save any equipment that's rarer (note that this was not clarified in the 1989 UK rules but was in the revised UK rules of the 1990 edition). If the heroes lose quest items like the spirit blade, the Morcar/Zargon player should seed those treasures into the mission so when the heroes attempt it again they can find them. This was clarified in the 1989 North American rules set, and is necessary to ensure the heroes can complete the core game should they lose essential items. In my video on different HeroQuest rules I talk about the heroes being able to swap their weapon loadouts at any time. Lots of people have come up with different houserules about that. I allow my heroes to carry whatever they want, and they can change their weapon loadout on their turn for a free action, but once they have made an attack with a particular weapon, they are not allowed to change that weapon until their following turn.

HeroQuest is great. I thought the dungeon master was Zargon.

HeroQuest is superb. My number 5 game of all time. Zargon was the American name for the villain. In the UK he was called Morcar and as I was talking about the original UK edition I used the Morcar name.

I have house rules to sort the mind thing for magic users and to sort the horrible movement system and the nasty use a spell once mechanic.
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring
@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring Год назад
I think only being able to use spells once is an important part of the game - it's a small resource management element and gives you just a little bit more to think about. It also becomes less of an issue once you get artefacts that let you reuse spells and the spell scrolls that act as additional copies of the spells. I use the unthreatened movement rule from Avalon Hill, which means rolling for movement when there are monsters around to help simulate the chaos of combat, but having a fixed movement of 4 spaces per dice you normally roll when there are no monsters around. I find that works really well.
@ftumptch86
@ftumptch86 Год назад
@@AlwaysBoardNeverBoring I like that movement rule, might try that. With the spell thing this is what I use the mind points for. Each time you cast a spell you roll a number of hit dice, each skull loses a mind point. Get to zero and your mind collapses. The scrolls give you free casts.

Do the expansions add much to the game?

Yes. Some more than others, with Kellar's Keep and Return of the Witch Lord adding the least and Mage of the Mirror and Frozen Horror adding the most. I've covered the expansions in depth on the channel so you can see exactly what each one adds.

You underestimate the planning skills of a dungeon master. Of course the fire places are ventilated. And those are beeing delivered with the portrait of the Emperor, I can't help it. And what about the book shelfs? They should attract mages to join the ranks, of course
