Hex reopened at Alton Towers this week and we were there to experience the updated experience! In this vlog we share our thoughts on the changes made to Hex, along with talking about the technical work that Alton Towers and Vekoma have worked on behind the scenes. Unfortunately after just over 1 day, Hex is now closed again. In this video I share all of the latest updates!

I was in the vault when it broke. It was a piece of facia board covering the sliding door mechanism that came loose and got caught as the door moved behind the central part. It did look just superficial though hence the proposed Tuesday reopening date

@@TheHesK9 Likely so, there's a bit of a shortage of maintenance engineers industry wide at the minute, likely won't get many bites from top performers for the salary they're offering unfortunately.

Shaun your memory of the history of the parks, opinions and ideas are fantastic. But it's your communication and ability to explain your thoughts which are next level. Honest question: Why on earth aren't Alton Towers especially running ideas and concepts through you before going ahead with changes and plans? You have such a good idea of what works in Theme Parks. It seems daft they don't involve you and have you on the payroll. Keep up the good work pal

Appreciate your honesty with this one. and glad that the creator programme isn't going to buy your approval of changes / things the park does! I've seen a couple of reviews from the opening day and the people seem to have their rose tinted glasses on! I have never been able to ride HEX as every single time I've been to the park it's been closed but people always told me how great it was partially due to it being super dark and scary! The lighting "upgrades" in the vault seem un-necessary. Fingers crossed they can just dial them back a bit and return it to it's former glory (after they fix it again I mean)

With regards the Content Creator Programme, we genuinely feel blessed to have been accepted on to it by the park. We’re grateful for the opportunity as a small channel to help us grow. I have to be fair and admit the maintenance team needs an overhaul at the park, something isn’t right especially when Hex has been closed for so long hopefully it can be fixed for the future.

I got on Hex yesterday afternoon before I did attic and gained a knee injury coming out of the attic. I got evacuated with my sister and my niece and nephew we was looking forward to riding it a second time. I hope it opens again soon

Towers really frustrates me and I’m sure it does many others too. The ride operations and maintenance is beyond embarrassing and needs sorting ASAP. Just had two weeks in Disney world and they have rides there that have operated since the 70’s and they look new still. Towers is a cost cutting joke, ride effects off, staff cuts and shambolic operations. Shame.

I am very grateful to have gotten on Hex yesterday and even got to sit next to you and have a chat about the disco lights after the ride 😂 I completely agree with what you said about the lights; it is like a disco and is very similar to what they did with Duel a few years back with the brighter lights. It is nice to see it back-well, hopefully back after it closed yesterday. I also hope that you being in the creator program will allow you to share improvement ideas with them. Great to hear your thoughts on the content creator programme. We were also very disappointed with the so called “exclusive filming opportunities” which was just the queue-line and anyone can film in the queue. Hopefully the next event will be much improved and we hope the marketing team can take onboard our constructive feedback.

I completely agree. Shawn always gives a great verbal description of any ride, but AT really should be attracting customers with filmed showcase events (like a re-opening or update such as Nemesis). The 'Content Creator Programme' is basically what every themepark in the country is already doing. And they messed this opportunity up straight away!

I've been publicly vocal about the maintenance issues at AT for YEARS and honestly this is beyond ridiculous now... Hex has had a history of shutting down in October (Halloween season when it's a Halloween themed ride) and I haven't been able to go on the ride for like 3 years due to poor maintenance. Somebody should inform the park planners that "engineers" are a thing 🤦‍♂️

I've never experienced Hex, my first visit to AT was this year but since being a kid, Hex was the main reason I wanted to visit. I am a sucker for myths, legends and British history. It's a bucket list ride for me due to how it mixes local legends with the real towers with a good ride experience. I'm quite saddened to hear they've gone down the OTT flashy vibe, like monster party. I'll go back up to AT at some point and ride it, but I'm less hyped for it. Hopefully it reopens soon. Thanks to you both for your open and honest thoughts/reviews. It's good to hear content creators give their true opinions - hope the park listens to the masses with issues with availability and future improvements. Hope Charlotte is back on the rides soon! Gosh I really hope they sort it. For me as much as I haven't been on for a long time it is probably one of THE BEST rides around with its immersion of the true story, the darkness and mystery to it and not just that but an unique ride concept (I remember once hearing a fan prediction when it closed the first time following the Smiler incident and someone said it could potentially be that they put Ripsaw in there which for me did not work one bit). So its so disappointing that its broken again and I worry that AT could just scrap the attraction now. Bianca should be hanging her head in shame - too much focus on unnecessary lighting rather than money on the reliability.

18:51 This made me laugh so much, looks like Charlotte after a soaker water ride 🤣 Anyway i’ve actually only been to AT twice as i live far (i plan on going more regularly) so i never went on HEX but it’s great to see it back open and im very impressed how you managed to keep me watching a 22 minute video about a ride i’ve been ridden and only know some stuff about so well done 🤣🤣 It’s sad to see it closed for a few days but hopefully over winter they get it back up and running smoothly! I do hope the content creator program gives you more freedom eg. filming on ride, more events, previews, behind the scenes and possibly letting you two go into the construction site of the new rides like when Thorpe let was it Jack Silkstone onto the site to keep people updated, this would make the vlogs even better ! Thats always the issue when changing lights to LED. they dont have that same warm glow the old halogen lights had. it sounds like it needs a slower fade to imitate old halogen/ incandescent bulbs. I've also seen they've added the LCD monitors back to the octagon. I remember years ago they did that and everyone complained that the glow of the backlights ruined the immersion vs the old CRT monitors they had in there. Personally i think the CRT Monitors gave it that charm in there. so if they have't binned them yet... they should put them back or replace them with OLED screens to get that black level back down.

Absolutely!! I remember seeing opening day photos of Hex on Twitter, and the lighting looked fantastic!! I love the warm and subtle lighting in the queue, and the much colder baby blue lighting that would come up in the shows when the supernatural side of the story takes over. Subtle, but incredibly convincing and effective. Why can't we have lighting like that nowadays? Unfortunately lighting in theme parks these days seems very intentionally "in your face" simply for the sake of it, and ruins it personally. We need more warmer and subtle lighting back in indoor attractions. It is possible with LEDs, but its not a quick job and takes time to perfect it. I also agree with the CRTs, it gave the room a more industrial feel to it, making it a perfect contrast when the lights go out. CRTs aren't particularly expensive either and anyone can but a decent working one. I can't see why Towers can't reintroduce CRTs back in the ride. Not every piece of technical equipment needs to be the latest thing, that just takes the immersion away of being in a different place at a different time.

You would need more than just a slower fade to imitate the older lighting. You would need irregularities in the lens designs for the fixtures, or the diodes themselves . You would also need some kind of flicker unit capable of producing high quality flickers alongside the fixtures. As @themeparkworldwide notices, most LEDs lighting units in the ride have that artificial feel to them because they are programmed to a very basic level , or have simple fixtures, or use a simplistic DMX controller. It's not as immersive. The issue is the fact that the whole show control system is now digitally programmed, and while you "could" reinstall old CRT TVs in to the Octagon room (which I agree were far better), they'd be limited by the capability of the digital input signals from the show control unit (which are binary).You wouldn't have the rapid 'naturalistic' lightness contrast that you get from the phosphers of analog programmed CRTs. Those older CRT TVs worked so well in the Octagon room, and it's never been the same since they were removed and replaced in the early 2010s. Also, worth pointing out that most of that older style lighting wouldn't be allowed nowadays, due to the newer climate change regulations which the resort follows. It's unfortunate to hear about the lighting downgrade, either way. Hex used to have superb lighting.

Some of the updates they’re doing don’t work for AT imo. They seem to want to make things look really polished and modern but it ruins the authentic style. Even the scarefest hearse they’ve brought in looks really naff. I know it’s supposed to be more for kids but even so, if I was a kid I’d prefer the older realistic one. Rant over :p

Hey there Shawn, I’m glad that you and Charlotte got back on Hex: Legend of the Towers at Alton Towers Resort, after being closed for two years. However, I agree with you, the lighting needs to be improved a bit. Maybe, they could bring back the old CRT Monitors, which would help re-introduce the classic feel of the attraction when it opened in 2000. Also, I'm so sorry to hear that the attraction was closed just a few hours after reopening. In my opinion, the overall maintenance unit at the park should get a massive overhaul. BTW, Charlotte looks very cute wearing that ghost hat. 👻👻😍😍😍😊😊

I haven’t been on Hex for a good 6 years. But I always felt it could be slightly better lit on the walk through to see more of the interior. And at the end of the ride when the tree lit up, I thought it look like battery powered fairy lights which were on their way out. I hope it’s open for Run Alton Towers. A little embarrassing for the park when their press material said the ride had completed 3000 cycles to be ready to open to the public 🙈

I really enjoyed it, I thought it was quite spectacular in there, but the branch looked awful with Christmas lights all over it. It does need some tweaks but overall I thought it was impressive. Hope it opens again soon!

I love hex and its definitely my favourite ride. I feel like with a slightly longer ride cycle itself it would be perfect. Totally agree about the lighting. Subtle is best with that ride. Massive shame about it breaking down again. Definitely seems to be a theme latley with alton. Hopefully she's back up and running soon.

As I stated before Shawn, a channel which I will not name was given free access and POV permission to the rides at Alton, at this point I'm still disappointed with their decision making and actually started to feel more optimistic with the new program. I also forgot to mention that they were escorted by a dedicated member of Alton's staff for the day. As per usual so far they have let the fans and other content creators down. Maybe the issue with HEX was a little Karma playing out but who knows ... 😉 Charlotte, best of luck with your back issue and I hope it's only temporary.❤

Honest as always 😊 Alton Towers is an absolute joke at this point. But maintenance teams shouldn't be blamed for this, it's clearly a management thing now, the entire resort needs shaking up and maybe a personnel change at the top. It's an absolute embarrassment to have an attraction down for so long and then open it for a day. They have probably only worked on it the past few months. And rushed to get it open.

I think the new lighting will grow on us... The first time I went in I was skeptical and thought like you Shawn The Second time I liked it And the third time I appreciated what they have done.... I agree that it could be a little bit toned down in some areas but I think it has modernized with the times

What a sad missed opportunity, both in terms of Hex and also in terms of this new ‘content creator’ program. With the incredible atmosphere of the Towers, Hex was theirs to lose, so it’s sad to hear they haven’t quite nailed it here, especially now that it’s broken again….

I really hope it is open on Friday as our only opportunity to go during scarefest as we rely on the RAP system which is so difficult to secure now with the limited capacity (not sure our merlin passes are worth having anymore which is heartbreaking being 20 mins away and having to say sorry can't go to our 2 autistic sons when they ask)

We visited the park yesterday and due to rides breaking down we didn't get on a ride til gone 1pm! It's a combination of bad luck and unreliable rides. And because of so many ride closures, the queues to the remaining rides are huge, so it's really disappointing if you're there for a day and struggle to get on the big rides. We have gold passes so it's not so bad for us. But I can imagine if you'd paid for a day pass you'd be really disappointed and angry. I even spoke to staff who commented on the ride breakdowns getting worse and how frustrating it is for themselves and the guests. Towers is such an amazing park, but it's being let down by the cost cutting and maintenance issues. Hex being closed was another huge disappointment too.

This is going to sound incredibly harsh, and you touch on this Shawn in the video about the disco stuff. But one thing Towers imagineers had back in the early 90's was this beautifully appreciation for subtlety and simplicity. They really had an all star talent back then. Now Towers in my humble opinion have lost their way. Everything just seems way cheaper and tackier and OTT as you say. What makes talented imagineers is knowing restraint where its needed.

I was there as part of the content creator programme in Friday, was great to meet you. I really feel for the park for this one, this sounds like an unfortunate incident as opposed to something which was down to lack of care and attention.
