Chronographs! They're violent! Follow Luca as he digs into the incredibly complicated and possibly overlooked complication.

Should really show how a column wheel works. Only because some manufacturers advertise that they use a column wheel as if it is a surperior mechanism. Also, a clearer verticle clutch demonstration would be great.

Very well explained, I always look at the length of a video before hitting the play button (thinking here’s a certain amount of my life that I’m never getting back), however I can say wholeheartedly that time flew by (pardon the pun) whilst watching that explanation of how the chronograph works. Your knowledge and cool delivery compliment each other. Tip of the cap to you Luca thank you.

Just bought my first chrono, a Heuer Autavia with the Calibre 02! The red column wheel is a lovely thing to behold, but having stumbled here 2 years on, would love to see part 2! ⏱️⏱️⏱️

A column-wheel chronograph is very different in operation. It works much smoother, so when you "actuate" the start/stop button it is a silky smooth press, whereas a vertical clutch feels clunky, and it makes the seconds handle "jump". They both do the same at the end though. I didn't really understand how each worked though, so thanks for that!!!

1:10 Chronograph (mostly) draw power from same reserve, but this fact often leads to a popular misconception : using chronograph will “consume” the power reserve faster. (WRONG!) The correct answer is that chronograph increases friction so that the entire system is more likely to stop earlier when reserve comes closer to the end. Yes it will stop sooner if turned on, but NO it does not consume faster. Rather, the increased friction load will prevent the power reserve to be fully consumed. There are some rare exceptions in which chronograph function does consume more power reserve, but in these cases the watch has to have a separate escapement system that works for the chronograph only.

Hey Luca, you’re kinda a cool guy and that was a very cool video. I’m learning tons of cool ish from these videos from all the way in the rainy UK. REQUEST FOR VIDEO - and this one is (as you Americans say - a doozie!) but can you explain the Equation Of Time complication? Seen on Panerai Luminor’s and others? That’s a real complex complication, let’s see what you’ve got!

Thanks again Luca. From Luka ;) How about a split chrono? What do you add to catch those additional measurements?
@heyimluca1275
@heyimluca1275 3 года назад
Hello again Luka, from Luca. This might be a little hard to picture but there is a kind of clamp (crab claw looking guy) which is held open by the columns of a second, independent column wheel. At the open end of the claw, between the pinchers, is the split seconds wheel. when you press the split second stop button, the column wheel rotates, causing lil fingers on the clamp to slip into the voids between the columns, this causes those pinchers to close up and grab the outside of the split second wheel so you can take a reading. I hope that makes a little bit of sense lol. This article from Hodinkee does a great job of explaining it www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-detailed-survey-of-the-split-seconds-chronograph-and-its-cousins

I’ve been fascinated by how a minute repeater works. I mean how does the watch “know” what time it is exactly when you pull the lever, and then plays it back with sounds?

How about explaining how power reserves have gone from 40 hours up to 70-80 hours… I hear about double barrels, but don’t really know what that means.
@heyimluca1275
@heyimluca1275 3 года назад
So the barrel is the housing/wheel the mainspring lives in, two barrels= two mainsprings= double the reserve of one!

Hey Luca, how does magnetism affect a watch?
@heyimluca1275
@heyimluca1275 3 года назад
Poorly to say the least, magnetism can wreak havoc on the escapement causing the watch to behave erratically or downright stop in extreme cases
@kevintran5854
@kevintran5854 3 года назад
@@heyimluca1275 I think it will be a great idea for you to do a video showing you magnetizing a watch. Show it on a timegrapher. Then explain what is happening mechanically that cause it to behave erratically.
