My band played back up band for Ramones around 85 in ocean city Maryland...I banged on the dressing room door and they all 4 invited me inside...Since my precision bass was exactly like Dee dees bass and i had read about them in guitar player mag about a month earlier...We discussed the article since they hadn't read it yet and wanted to know how it was....dee dee let me play and check out his bass...They were all like friends I had knew for years...Of course within a hour Dee Dee was asking me where he could score so we left to go in my car to the objection of his manager who warned me not to give him any drugs...Spending the day with the Ramones and spending the day with dee dee in ocean city and playing back up band for them was one of the best times of my life I will never forget...
Rest in power Dee Dee the most important figure in rock and roll history and extremely underrated. If there was no Dee dee there would be no Ramones and without Ramones there would be no punk and punk literally chamged not only rock but society. From spikey hair to skinny jeans amd too many examples to name
Like Its all done now..score..good dope these fkin minderasers.types.listen to Unkle Henry.R..etc theyve been there &,will share..#×1.,Dont give drugs a bad name.too.ppl.need ti leave it.
Even tho i would love to hear all the unfiltered uncensored insane stories i still like how careful he was about what he said the whole time. Never said anything that was incriminating even about other people. That's a sign of a real one. Never snitched or detailes any crimes unlike all these rappers on interviews nowadays snitching on themselves amd their gangs
Dee Dee was from THE time in NY. The Wanderer's type shit. The dawn of serious youth crime where murders between kids started happening. The time of Jim Carroll and The Basketball Diaries. People back then were stand-up for real. No social media/podcast/OG reaction video shit. Nobody ever saw nothing.
This is so nostalgic to me and takes me back to when i was 14 before I went down the heroin path myself I bought this DVD right when it was released at Virgin records when i was 13 or 14 and was literally obsessed with it and anything ramones. It actually came with a page of Dee dee's tattoos. The kid kind that you wet and press on yourself. I think my older brother borrowed it amd might still even have the tattoos. It also came with a poster of the cover which i put up in my room so thats lost
to me the funniest thing about watching this, doesn't make me wanna cop dope or rant about why others shouldn't. I just wanna slice of pizza so good that the olive oil drips down my arm. Dee Dee is New York personified. met him at an N/A A/A meeting in 92 over a slice. those were the days. Still sad though because on the flip side watching this makes me feel like a priest and I'm just not going there! But I'm here again anyway huh🤯👻✌️and the way you finished the photo collage, let's here it for sober Dee Dee!
Dee Dee was an innovator and one of the best lyricists ever. In his last autobiography, "Legend of a Rock Star: A Memoir: The Last Testament of Dee Dee Ramone," he wrote about how he tortured and took pleasure in killing a stray cat. That is inexcusable.
He wasn't some wannabe satanic shock value kind of person. He was a genuine street person and victim of the NYC streets in the 70's. He was a gangster punk lol and like gangsters he believed in God and always wanted to get out of that lifestyle
God bless Dee Dee Ramone. For me he was always a sweet guy and very innocent in a lot of ways about people and life. He always seemed to be harder on himself than on anyone else. The Ramones were so great, almost despite themselves, because few would have given them a chance at the start, but they did it anyway. Its a good lesson. If you love what you do and others tell you that you're a freak and don't stand a chance, do it anyway, not to prove them wrong, but just because its what you love to do and because you are you, not someone else. The Ramones were always true to themselves, and I don't know many people who can honestly say that
I wish Dee Dee had actually stayed off the heroin, then we may have this gentle soul and great songwriter/storyteller with us still. I lost my best friend to a heroin overdose in my early 20's, and hearing Dee Dee talk about it in this is just all too heartbreakingly familiar. The drug steals your life and never gives it back, and it steals you away from those who love you.
I remember watching Rock n Roll High School late one night on tv when I was 14 and fell in love with the Ramones. I thought Dee Dee was so gorgeous and wished he was my boyfriend. Still have a huge crush on him. Wished I could of met him.
Dee Dee was one of the nicest guy I ever met in th New York rock and roll scene. I sold him the Gretsch guitar shown in this documentary...such a cool guy. Invited my buddy and me to the Chelsea hotel, where he was living with his wife. All of the Ramones were very accessable....I liked Dee Dee a lot.
Brad Snyder I think your getting him confused With the legendary joe strummer, joe is the best writer not dee dee, In fact dee Dee didn't even write the most famous ramones song blitzkrieg bop, Tommy ramone wrote that.
Dee Dee & Tommy wrote Blitzkrieg Bop. Dee Dee wrote almost every one of the Ramones early songs over the first 3 albums. He even wrote for them after he left the band. Joey wrote songs too, but everyone who knows anything about punk rock knows Dee Dee was the best. When the Clash were punk all they were was a Ramones rip off and even they would admit that. Then they became some kind of new wave bs.
Nancy Acid thank you for posting this video. I'm not sure but I don't think it's even out there to buy. Dee Dee seems to be a very loveable guy. Thank you Nancy for sharing this great insight to the true Dee Dee
When he hesitated during the stiletto knife story in Paris I knew how the situation was resolved - before Dee Dee admitted returning to the US with a renewed habit. I also think that even though he claimed he wouldn't write an anti-drug song, Chinese Rocks isn't a song glorifying heroin use like Lou Reed's Heroin is. . . LR's songs had me wanting to try heroin when I was an 8th grader! If only I knew then that Chinese Rocks would be a much more accurate depiction of my future... Would I have reconsidered? Maybe... but probably not. RIP Dee Dee, one of many gone too soon!
Extremely relatable. I was the biggest Ramones fan since 10 when i first heard them on Tony hawk pro skater 1, sadly after their break up and couple years before Dee Dee's untimely death. Started using IV heroin at 17 and went thru mostly everything dee dee talks about. I love him and hope he's in a better place
If you have not read Dee Dee's book on the Ramones, check it out. I found myself cracking up on several occasions. He talks about trying to get his drivers license and failing miserably but they gave it to him anyway with the hope that he would kill himself behind the wheel (these are his words, not mine). Book is a laugh riot.
ramones rock!!!cj ramones dee dees replacement in the band is playing rebellion festival in Blackpool UK August 2016!!!rip dee dee joey Johnny tommy !!!adios amigos xx Thank you for this share
I'm living on a Chinese rock all my best things are in hock I'm living on a Chinese rock everything is in the pawn shop...hit it - Dee Dee ramone is god r.I.p. DD n j.t.
Dee Dee is listed as the primary song writer for Chinese Rocks on the original version of the LAMF album along with Thunders, Nolan, and Richard Hell... which would be accurate since Johnny no doubt added his own guitar parts to the song, and I guess Jerry Nolan wanted credit for writing the drum part(?) But, on later reissues of the record I believe Dee Dee is listed as the sole writer of the song.
I would have known Thunders was stealing! Junkies steal. I should fucking know. So glad to be clean now. That lifestyle is a nightmare but in a sick way you become addicted to that as well. uggghhhhh
Did you ever see Kowalski's Johnny Thunders bio movie. soulcracka? You will come away from that movie thinking what a scumbag Thunders was. He was murdered in New Orleans most likely for his methadone supply he was legally given
Deeply depressing. Dee Dee comes across as a pretty decent guy, but, Jesus, what a terrible indictment of drug abuse. I normally enjoy any music documentaries, but this was tough going. As I grow older I guess the glamour of hero squalor has diminished somewhat. And, why, oh, why, so much time spent on the 3rd-rate "Chinese Rocks"?
Ever heard the heartbreakers version? It was their staple song, and especially their version was fantastic. The Ramones never recorded or performed it well. This interview started out as being a part of a Johnny thunders documentary. The director later felt Dee Dee was more interesting than Johnny and ended up releasing this interview instead.
Your ID suits you. Do you read Thomas Wolfe or any geniuses that have issues that are hard to look at? Don’t look away, mate! They are amazing, beautiful, sad and complex. Yes, may be hard to look at, but come on, all heroine users are are hard to watch, nevertheless, they are often beautiful artists to explore. Carry on, but without disrespect? That was a somewhat slight to a FREAKING RAMONE! Be well and whatever~
0:27 This sycophant leech has now said eleven times "this is sooo great man".......what a douche bag...Former great DeeDee looked like the low quality smack junky wash-out he was....Those ripped pants ...were sooo passé man...bad smack providing groupies giggling his every fart......Always wondered what brings some people apart from being in jail, to 'adorn' themselves with cheap skin deseased looking tattoos....he's sitting there like they're some incredible art....___These guys ,Vicious ,Thunders, are the best advertisements to avoid dope like the plague. Not that I did....their scene seemed not much better then GG Allen's... ugly groupies, grimey ,smelly ,bad smack headache dope...a far cry from the way a certain K.R. managed to glamourise dope....These guys were 'punks', but understandably desperately wanted to be The Rolling Stones.... At least The Dolls and Thunders didn't pretend to want anything else..... Oh well....having been part of the great Ramones ,he's got every right to boast... *Fucking great* docu though....I mean it maaan (gurl)......
He was clean at this point. GG Allen had to totally degrade himself at every show, it wasn’t even about the music, nor was it for much money. The Ramones made bank, Dee Dee made more than a successful lawyer, Johnny did too at times particularly at the heartbreaker shows where they could play 6 shows a week (2 sets a night 3 days) and pull in thousands of dollars. GG Allen was lucky to make a thousand total. Thunders had beautiful girlfriends until the eighties when his life went downhill. Thunders could have had even more girlfriends if he wasn’t so into dope which he preferred to women. The ripped jeans were not passe’ at this time. This was around the early 90s when grunge and pop punk was still going strong. I think you are self-projecting your own sad experience with dope and envy privileged musicians that had a better time than you.
that is probably the most boring non-stop rambling I have ever forced myself to listen through til the end, oh man. Go get a life, one wants to say. I guess that is why this guy killed himself, couldn't stand the boredom any longer himself.
