(Original airdate: 07/20/99) Joey and his bandmates played quite the prank on Sex Pistols lead singer, Johnny Rotten. Watch more classic clips @ conanclassic.com.
I miss these guys. Best quote I ever heard about this band was that each album was just long-enough to enjoy at full volume, but short-enough to be over before the police arrive.
He was. I met the band in 1990 on their Brain Drain tour. All interesting folks, to say the least. I was most taken aback by actually meeting Johnny. He was much nicer than his perpetual semi-scowl led me to believe.
@@jamesdemetro2145 This I can say about the Ramones - they were REAL. That was not a gimmick, persona, or act. What you saw on the stage was what you saw in the street. My pal and I had just caught their show at Sloss Furnace in Birmingham, Alabama, and a little while afterward we wandered into a Shop-A-Snak near UAB and there they were, with the same sodas, donuts, and Yoo-Hoo we had come after. They didn't even change clothes after the show. They signed the posters we had just ripped down from nearby. I'll never forget it if I live to be 200.
you know how i know they were a great band i was 18 in 1982 and my dad was a country lovin trucker and i left a ramons cassette in ihis truck by accident. the next day he went on a run and when he came back he knew all the words to the whole album. he asked me if i had any other tapes
One time my teenaged neighbors were having a pool party , and their friends' Metal band was playing. When I got home from work , I put on "Rocket To Russia". My Mom asked me if that was my stereo or the band outside , because , she thought , if it WAS the Metal band , she was surprised how much better their second set sounded.
That is so cool. I had the same experience leaving a Bob Marley tape in the 8-track in my fathers van. Found several albums from Bob and Wailers in his collection later. Almost wondered if he'd taken up ganja (he didn't - but it was a fun thought). : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-msqQY0aF4Y8.html
they absolutely did not start the punk scene and it only goes to show what fame does to a person for them to assume that kind of responsibility or innovation.
@@BarnacleButtock I thought the same thing - that a few bands would like to argue that claim, but I was distracted by the reference and recording dates.
@@BarnacleButtock - agreed. they started punk like RunDMC started Hip Hop or Nirvana started Grunge. just more pop cultural engineering tool, it may as well be Bing Crosby sitting there, I like Ramones songs because they are familiar, Ive heard them over and over again like Christmas music, Ramones also has a Christmas song, so punk rock like Twisted Sister.
Full disclosure, and I don't know why (I like them, but I'm not the biggest Ramones fan), I really feel the loss of Joey. This world was diminished when he left us
He wasn't entirely joking. He suffered from a rather severe case of schizophrenia. He actually underwent electroshock therapy when he was young as a result of it. So that's the real reason so many of the Ramones songs dealt with mental health issues. He was just writing what he knew.

I saw Patti Smith in concert shortly after Joey Ramone died. She gave a heartfelt tribute with a cover of Be My Baby because Joey Ramone loved Ronnie Spector. It was a genuinely touching moment.
it always hurts me to see interviews of him, because i see how nice he used to be. i was born in 2002 and it’s sad for me.. i wish he knew how talented and how loved he was, more than what he thought
Joeys been gone 20 years now. Howard Stern did a touching tribute to him this past week. He told the story of how Johnny Ramone who was a conservative republican stole Joey's girlfriend and that's how Joey came up with the KKK stole my baby away. Though there are a few stories about how the song came to be, but I thought it was pretty funny. It seems howard really liked Joey. The tribute by Joeys twin from another mother, made it that much better. In the late 1970's or early 1980's Wierd Al Yankovic was guest DJ on the Dr. Demento show. He proceeded to say something like, My dear mother used to play this song for me each night I went to bed, and he played Beat On The Brat, the next day I was at the record store buying the album. That was my introduction to the Ramones. A netflix film is in production about Joey, I hope its good.
@@rorylapidus5772 I’ll have to check out the stern tribute. I met Joey once and he was so generous and down to earth. At the time he would be asked the same questions by fans every single day but he didn’t act bothered or bored. It was only a few minutes by my impression was that he was a decent person in life. They say never meet your heroes but Joeys an exception.
Did you see Pete Davidson’s been cast as Joey in the upcoming Ramones’ movie? I can’t believe they wouldn’t go for Adam Driver, who’d do a brilliant job playing him, especially as he’s equally quirky.
@@bungle3912 yeah that was odd casting. Sure they got the height but nothing about Davidson screens Joey. I also thought Adam Driver would have been an incredible. I wonder if they thought of it? Or perhaps Driver didn’t want to? Or maybe Pete has a connection to the producers? Maybe they’ll surprise me.
@@rorylapidus5772 Are adult “girls” “stolen”. We get the song’s origin but dragging politics and demeaning a gal’s choice in lovers is tiresome. They were a fantastic fistful of weirdos that changed my life. Had they all carried on so well personally they might have swamped out into oblivion. I dunno for them but I do think a bit o’ tension can win ya big results in bands or romance
I was thinking the same thing and it hit me hard. I wish the Ramones were still here. The world need the Ramones and the Cramps (another of my favorites)!
The question wasn't all that stupid to be honest. It was a legit question, if you think about it. But then again, your brain probably didn't so there's that.
Bright side: The Ramones' relative anonymity is long dead. Can't think of a "best rock bands" listicle that doesn't have them somewhere near it these days.
Miss the Ramones so much. Had the pleasure of seeing them at several venues in NY. Saw them at CBGB, Paramount theater, The Factory, and Jones beach. Good times and memories............1..2..3..4!!!!!
I remember when I was a kid, around 1975, my brother came home from a concert one night and woke me up to tell me "I saw a band tonight and they were terrible!! They were called The Ramones!" Lol
2004 my first semester of high school, Johnny Ramone died and a punk girl didn't believe me when I told her (I dressed like a nerd but was OBSESSED with classic punk) next day she was pissed when she found out I was telling the truth 😂😂😂
I met Joey Ramone backstage at a festival in Asbury Park New Jersey in 1997.6 ft 6 and very thin he had shaded red tinted sunglasses underneath the lenses were prescription lenses to see because he had problems with his vision. We talked for awhile he was a really good dude rest in peace. I am glad to have seen this band more than once I also saw Dee Dee Ramone play Ramones songs on December 30th 1999 at a club called pinkies in Vegas his wife was playing bass and Dee Dee Ramone guitar and singing what fun times
Warped Tour. I saw him walk through the crowd and down the middle lane of the street into the distance. My friend swears he spit on a car but I didn't see it lol
@@Slick1BlaZeR2 when I ran into him he was acting as the manager for the band the independents. He was backstage and I walked up to him and we talked. He was a good dude down to earth and very affable. definitely a real dude I wish we had them back all of the Ramones
I was almost afraid to click on this video, but I literally had tears from laughing afterwards!! It was great. Conan was funny, but respectful as always..😀👍
He sounded kinda sad when he said he’d eventually settle down…. Like maybe he had a hard time finding someone and just pretended he liked the lifestyle…..RIP Joey…. True legend 🙏
Honestly my favorite interview with Joey (the mtv one with lemmy is a close 2nd) it’s just so happy and lighthearted, wish most interviews were like this
@@eivindgjengstjohansen9625 We served him and the band Chicken with an orange cranberry sauce with a stuffing baked underneath. It was sort of the house special. I think there were a few steaks ordered too.
@@seanshea8596 so he ate meat? I read that he became a pesceterian, or how you spell it right after he became sober in 1990 and that he quit dairy in the late 70s/early 80s
If I had lived any where near CBGBs I wouldve been to every show the Ramones played there, you are a lucky person having such memories. Regards from Ireland .
The Ramones were so incredible. My orthopedic surgeon loved the Ram ones so I bought him a Ramones tribute CD with covers by bands who loved the Ramones. Long story short I listened to that CD while I was getting put out by the anesthesiologist. The Dr.cut on me while the Ramones played in the operating room. Hey ho lets go!!!!!!
@@laughteraddict1003 I went to the same show! I even got pulled on stage to save me from being crushed by the crowd! Amazing show, and I miss that version of SOMA.
The stories that guy could tell. I saw the Ramones on the Lollapalooza tour and they were amazing. It’s where I learned that “1234!” is the best song intro ever conceived. RIP
The Ramones were the absolute pioneers of Punk. I'm glad it's explained that the Sex Pistols came after this band. And if you really want to be amazed this band were Pop / Punk way before that became popular in the 90's / 2000's
I don't see anything leading me to believe the Sex Pistols thought they would win the fight. Isn't being beaten up, ragged, and without value their entire gimmick?
I used to play their first album coming in from the bars at 2am and drove my roommates crazy. They were perfect-2 minute gems with amazing melodies and Chuck Berry worthy lyrics delivered with punk attitude. Great interview
That might of happened,it might not have.Thats just that geeky looking c***t saying it for laughs and for his gullible fans to automatically believe it.BTW Sex Pistols NMTB is a far better album than any ramones album.
@@JohnDoeXYZ Its not a joke, he's lying about pissing in someones beer. He's also lying about the Ramones being the first punk band. The Sex Pistols had already written most of their songs before the first Ramones album even came out. The reality is that The Sex Pistols created the audience for The Ramones. The Ramones should be very grateful to the Sex Pistols for giving them a career. I love The Ramones, but I don't appreciate lies.
Music that still lives on from generation to generation. And what other tee shirt is considered a must have in every closet? RIP Johnny Joey Dee Dee Tommy
When Joey Ramone says,"People looked at us like we were ALIENS." I remembered Men in Black II at the Post Office... a postal worker with a Joey Ramone haircut and glasses pulls back his wig to show his true colors (froggish green) and a big eyeball at the end of a tentacle...
Such a chill, nice dude. Can even take Conan ragging on his hair over and over lol I feel it. My hair is long now, I get comments about it all the time, but short hair just isn’t for everyone
Called him up in '99 and asked for an interview (I was a kid). He said no but was real nice and I'll always treasure having spoken to him, albeit briefly.
I read that the last song Joey ever heard before he passed was "In A Little While" by U2. Bono would make a tribute to Joey in concerts. It's a great song, I love it.
@@andrepereira744 The sex pistols were a manufactured boy band, that’s it. Nothing wrong if you like boy bands and stuff, and you’re saying that the Sex pistols were not poppy? Sid Vicious was named after a hamster….
@@johnnydapunk Sex Pistols said more with one album than the Ramones did with 14 (not including live albums). They also spearheaded a musical, social and cultural revolution that awoke an underclass. They weren't manufactured, they were originally an outfit consisting of Cook and Jones (and other less known members, notably Wally Nightingale RIP) named Swankers/Strand, later christened 'Kutie Jones and his Sex Pistols' by Malcolm Maclaren when Glen joined them, with this being shortened when John joined. You could argue that all bands are 'manufactured' to a lesser or greater extent, but the Pistols were hardly the Monkees, were they? Don't get me wrong, I like the Ramones, but I'd hardly call them progenitors of the scene. Punk music is an evolution of styles and sounds, with its roots in bands such as The Stooges, MC5, and Death (to name but a few). Sid was nicknamed after John's pet hamster though...
