An arrangement by David Bruce of Hej Sokoły or "Hey Falcons" (Ukrainian: Гей соколи, Polish: Hej Sokoły) - a song popular in Poland, Ukraine, Slovakia and Belarus. The lyrics exist in several versions about a Ukrainian girl to whom her betrothed, a cossack, says goodbye for the last time.

Translation by David Bruce
Hey there by the river's course
Sits a young man with his horse
All he thinks about all day
Is his girl and his Ukraine
Hey, hey, hey sokoly
Fly over the mountains to me
Ring the bells when you arrive
And we'll be glad to be alive
I feel sorrow and despair
For the girl that I left there
I feel sorrow for Ukraine
I will never see again
Hey, hey, hey sokoly
Fly over the mountains to me
Ring the bells when you arrive
And we'll be glad to be alive
If I die the take me home
As I don't want to be alone and
Bury me in my homeland
With my beloved hand in hand
Hey, hey, hey sokoly
Fly over the mountains to me
Ring the bells when you arrive
And we'll be glad to be alive

Excellent arrangement !! PS. Hej Sokoly is a very famous song in Poland,Ukraine, Czech Republic,Belarus and Slokavia: I have heard this in Polish and Ukrainian, but also in Slovak and in Ruthenian !! And I have listened to very different styles: rock and roll (Legendy se vrací-a Czech band or I.M.T. Smile, a Slovak band, pop music (Maryla Rodowicz, Ivan Komarenko), folkloric music (Kollarovci-a Slovak band), tecno (the Boys, Mirami,), dance music (Bayer Full), polka (some bands of United States) and above all choral style (Veriovka and Volshynski Narodni Choir , Pikkardiyska Tersiya in Ukraine, Polish choirs and Alexandrov Choir from Russia !! Best greetings !!

What do mean with “remember” when it isn’t even originally their song?

Lovely arrangement! What you said in your original video reminds me of a funny story that my translation professor told us during one of the lectures, about some foreign star that came to Poland for a concert, and as a gesture towards the audience, she prepared her own arrangement of Hej Sokoły, but she interpreted as the original lyrics suggests: a slow, lyrical song, since it is, as you said, a lover's lament (perhaps that used to be the proper way to sing it). But for Poles, it's a drinking song, so to her surprise, the entire audience started to sing along, clapping their hands and soon they were for bars ahead of her due to the difference in tempo :)

Great story! I'm glad I went for a reasonably upbeat arrangement!

It's a First World war song of which Polish and Ukrainians sang in the trenches on the Italian front but the sad significance of another Ukrainian song called A Cossack rides by the Danube a good song .

That's really lovely. Thank you for posting this. Could I ask about the last line of the chorus? On the repeat, the children hold the same note through the phrase "be alive", which, from a genre point of view, doesn't sound quite right to my ears. The harp accompaniment on the fill, however, plays the kind of tune I would have expected in the vocal line. Is the unchanging note in the vocal line because you wanted to keep it simple for the children, or is my expectation of the tune inaccurate and unhelpful and the way the children sing it is just the way that the tune really goes?

Thanks - the tune they sing is kept as it is in the original, staying on the same note.
