This is the most unhurried, serene, and beautiful performance of this I think I've ever heard! What amazing control over the line and what amazing ensemble skills. There's a reason why this group is just simply one of the best in the entire world. When you only have one singer per part (this piece has eight individual parts) and you tackle a work like this which was probably written for a much larger group (I sang it once with three times as many singers as Voces8 and it was a challenge!) your instinct is to move the tempo as fast as you can reasonably get away with -- so nobody runs the risk of running out of air with nobody to stagger breathe with. Not to mention it's just easier to perform at faster tempos without a conductor. But these folks just take all the time in the world and spin these beautiful, long phrases and never seem to run out of air; every line from every singer is just beautiful. Wow. Just wow.
I completely agree! I've been listening to different recordings and RU-vid performances of this piece - nothing is even close! How I wish they had a recording of the entire heart-engaging work.
The level of synchro perfection you singers have is incredible. Its like one voice with all the highs and lows. Sublime! Every song you sing is perfection. The visuals are also stunning. What a masterclass of artistry both visual and auditory. I had never heard of Josef Rheinberger before I heard Abendlied, which means Evening Song, and its so full of regret and longing, of things gone and deep longing to have them back... and this led me here. My daughter died, in the prime of her life at 37, to cancer. When I listen to Abendlied, she is back in the shadows where I can feel her breath again and hear the tinkling of her bangles and the click of her heels. Thank you dear singers, for taking me back there for a brief moment. I'm overwhelmed with gratitude. You are all superb and it was a privilege.
Not only the most sublime music but the words are the most beautiful in all of human language: Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. I pray that for myself and for the life of the world.
These guys are always impressive, but this one is stunning. Their tempo feels as though they’re all sharing an internal click track. Their just intonation on the thirds is fantastic, and at the end of each of their walkups toward the end, I’ve never heard dominant sevenths tuned any better, anywhere.
Singen und singen sind zwei unterschiedliche Dinge, nach Noten singen, aber viel Herz und Seele hinlegen - eine ganz andere Art von Erhabenheit in der Chormusik. Großartig vorgetragen und interpretiert. Danke!!
I am a classical solo double bass player. It's hearing things like this sung by Voces8 .. which gives me inspiration to practice like a maniac. I've no idea why.. it just does.
Keep up your work. You hold the pitch for the rest of the choir. Just listen to this piece and the basses are there to keep the pitch. I am also a Basso Profundo. MRC
I keep thinking you cannot get any better; you are already perfect. But this Kyrie is so beautiful, so etherial, that it enters the heart and stays there. Kyrie, eleison this world of ours.
Such serene beauty..it's like the swell of the tides as they rise and fall before they reach the shore..the harmonies are entrancing. Absolutely wonderful..music really is one of life's greatest gifts. Thank you 🎁💖
Art knows no boundaries! As a Muslim, I feel so peaceful listening to this choir, I don't understand what they are saying, but it just sounds marvelous. A festival of beautiful voices, in perfect harmony.
additionaly: Kyrie is always at the beginning of the mass and considered sort of an "entry" to what is going to follow. As from experience Kyrie in my opinion is one of the most beautiful parts of a christian mass. Composers always go beyond their capabilities in order to capture your ears for what is to come
Stunning! When Euan Williamson comes in at 3:27, it moves through me like hope rising out of the mist of conflict. Layer upon layer, the hope continues to ascend like the morning light. So so beautiful.
Beautiful performance, and one that proves to me that this piece sounds best when performed with solo voicing. The space you give each other really breathes life into Rheinberger's flowing harmonies.
Danke!
Oh Halleluja :)! Be blessed All of you. I cried the whole song. I cried because of Jesus mercy to me and my life. I walked through two divorces. Lost my job after 19 years. The only savior in my circumstances through this hard experiences is Jesus. I can only confess He is my savior ! The last time it was at 14th November in year 2020. I felt lost and depressed. I felt I have no future. The Jesus saved me from death and I only can praise him for his endless love to me. He is the only savior to me and for All mankind. Please, give your whole life to him. He love you and have a wonderful plan for you. Many blessing to you :)!
so lovely and peaceful, and there’s beauty and much joy in following each individual voice as it braids into the others, then opens out again into the silence. Thank you for all these gifts!
Sang this (2d bass) with my church choir: a profoundly moving experience. But this interpretation is far and away the standard toward which all may strive. The musicianship, the control and balance, as well as the spirituality, of this rendering of Rheinberger's Kyrie is unparalleled in excellence.
This is absolutely flawless! I most probably listened to this a thousand times! It's so beautiful! Thank you @Voces8 for the amazing work you do! Thank you; thank you; thank you!
My dissertation was written on the secular choral music of Josef Rheinberger. It is always amazing to hear any ensemble performing his music. It is especially exciting to hear Voces8 performing Rheinberger.
The crescendo that starts at 3:26 hits me every time.. what an build up and what perfect blend of voices! I cannot thank you enough for this masterpiece!
Love the voice of your new member, very different from her predecessor's much more of a high soprano than rather deep mezzo. But it fits this piece very well
It would be tempting but the Gloria and Credo are extremely wordy. Even though Rheinberger did a masterful job, his best musical ideas are in the Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei. Maybe record these separately as they would stand on their own, musically speaking. I can't find any info on the choirs he had access to but considering the posts he had during his lifetime, it would be great to go back in time and listen. When you consider his contemporaries (Mendelssohn, Brahms etc), their contribution to choral music, and Rheinberger's talent at such a young age, I'm surprised these works aren't performed more often. They sparkle as perfectly cut diamonds. Bravo for the piece and BRAVO for an inspiring rendition.
@@PewPewReload oouf, best recorded I don’t know…. There are some pretty epic recordings of this out there. Have you listened to the Rutter/ Cambridge Version? Mainly comes down to preference at some point, surely but I think Voces8 lack a little bit of “oomph “ for these pieces.
@@Joggelschorsch absolutely! Nothing like Rutter and CS! I love them to the moon! However, I think this has more subtlety and nuance, which is harder to do with a larger group. Maybe I like the feeling of intimacy this gives the piece. Anyway, you're not wrong, however, personally I like this one more :)
Absolutely beautiful music. God bless and thanks for sharing. I listen to almost all of your RU-vid music and never get tired of it. Brings me great joy 👍💓
Voces8 randomly came up in my RU-vid feed a month or so ago, and I can only stay that I'm awed and stunned by your balance, tuning, intonation and precision. Thank you.
I've performed this and 30 years later it remains one of my favorite choral pieces. Your performance is stunning, the best I've heard. I'm filled with emotion.
Absolutely sublime - listening to this performance the first time I was able to discern contrapuntal intricacies that have been lost to me with others; yet the whole was still the exquisite harmonic blend Rheinberger intended. Thank you!!!
Sublime, les voix et les regards nous touchent profondément, et la voix cristalline d'Andrea Haines qui s'élève, nous élève .... Vous écouter fait tant de bien.
This, ..... Is like you are all delivering PEACE to my home. Gently, slowly, allowing it to wrap its calming, soothing blanket all over the interior within. So welcoming. Truly, please know that all of you help me at a time that is needed. God bless each of you. ✝️ ❤
