I'm with the guy, no one should be told they HAVE to tip. And why can't SHE leave the tip!!

Best comment was the woman that asked why the GF didn't add to the tip or outright leave one. I think the woman on the right had the second best comment when she wondered if he ALWAYS thinks the service is bad.

The guy is right and shouldn't be shamed into tipping "just because", and it is NOT his job to pay the employees it is the businesses job to pay the employees.

No one should be forced to tip. I don’t tip i just pay what i ate! Bringing a plate or some drinks doesn’t deserve a tip we all work and do our job and no one is tipping us!

Why does it matter? He can be cheap to others but as long as he is generous to you, he is still a good man for you! Why not just enjoy your time and the meal and don't look at the bill so you don't know how much is it and what percentage he tip? It's the employer's responsibility to make sure the waiters get paid properly, not fair to transfer that burden to customers. It's like giving someone a coupon and then judge them to be cheap! It's better to add mandatory service fee on the menu so customer can have a choice and not be judged.

I took my boyfriend out to dinner for his birthday. It was so funny to watch the waitress flirt, touch his arm and basically kiss his ass. (obviously, hoping for a big tip) She practically ignored me. Imagine how her face looked when she brought the bill over to him, and I grabbed it and pulled a wad of cash out of my jeans ..... lol....she flirted with the wrong person!!!

Agree w the guy 100%. Most Asia countries provide the best services and they don’t really ask for tips. Japan has no tipping and other major Asia cities take 10% tip max and they provide excellent services. Don’t expect me to tip u 20% while u didn’t do sh*t.

I don't understand the Idea of a tip. It is the restaurant's work to pay all their employees a fair wage. If I start a business, I'd pay my employees and charge my customers accordingly.

It makes it so much worse when people say “It didn’t mean anything.” That translates to what we have is nothing. You took a risk of your relationship in favor of ‘nothing’.

Tipping should never be mandatory and I hope people in the US come to recognize that their real issue is not with the customers but with the restaurants. You should be paid fairly like in many other countries rather than having to rely on flirting with a customer or their moods.

I don't get why in the US there's this unwritten "mandatory" tipping culture, while in many other countries the service industry could get by without tipping? 😅

If an employer has to rely on tip, the hourly rate is too low. Good service = good tip. Bad service = just the hourly wage. Being forced to pay Gratuity is broken.

The percentage should rely on the quality of their service, otherwise there’s no incentive to do a good job. However, the servers are likely in more need of the money than the customer.

I honestly don't have any negative thoughts ans judegments against her boyfriend point of view on tipping. In general I think its fine to tip when you have money to spare but you should have to treat it like it's a part of the bill that you must always leave a tip. He's trying to provide for her and save his money to do better things, nothing wrong with that. Also, I learned that waiters do not depend on their tip to survive. At least in MN, if the waiter earns more tip then their monthly salary, then the employer doesn't have to pay them anything. If the waiter's tips does not exceed their monthly salary, the employer has to pay the waiter their monthly salary.

I don't think anyone should be allowed to tip a waiter. It's up to the person what they want to do with the money. The payment system where a waiter relies on the customer's tip is not a good thing. It needs to be changed. The boss should pay the waiters more.

I tip regardless unless I feel blatantly disrespected like our waiter constantly skips us and helps people in my vicinity. But if they are taking a little longer than your used too but you see em hustling, it could be a situation where they are covering for the a hole waiter who constantly calls out. Not to mention what is the definition of good service? It sounds to me homeboy is used to getting pampered. I myself am a low maintenance person. So this question can be subjective, cause there are times we don't need to be bothered but you get that waiter whose crazy attentive, but you don't need that.

If you can't tip, you can't afford to eat at that restaurant. I'm not a server. But I tip 20% (I don't tip on the tax because the tax goes to the gov). If the service is poor I might tip 10%. For normal service it's 20%. If I can't afford it, I don't go - OR, order something less expensive

I don't think the restaurant or this young lady is trying to force him to leave a tip. I am not sure why people are implying that is what is going on. She is just saying that him not choosing to tip is done in poor taste and that he should reconsider. All types of people get tips nowadays people. Not just waiters and waitresses.

I always tips, good or bad service I’ll tips. Not that I have enough to give but I always remembered one tips my girlfriend received and helped me out with 5 years ago. I did not know that there was two types of cheating.
