My fist car I have ever bought was a 87 Conquest TSI for $4500 back In 92 , it was my first year in college back in San Antonio Texas. It was red with black leather interior really ahead of it's time and would love to buy one right now 😀
I type the same story in Starquest vid comments all the time. Not a day goes by that I don't remind myself that I vowed to replace that car and build another one.
I see a few comments that likely corrected it but 83 to 87 the flatty was available in the us. 86 to 89 the wide body. There were slight differences through the years like the addition of auto seat belts in 87 and some differences in the efi and ignition systems through the years but nearly the same car. There was no 89 SE edition car but there was a small run 85.5 esi car that was a flatty with 5 lug 15in wheels and an intercooler. I have an 84 ES(euro sport) model with the velnas system and older etacs control. These cars were super trick for the time. Last addition. The 4g63 that came in the euro and jdm markets was a wide block which can be found in things like the Montero and mighty max trucks that shares the bell housing bolt pattern. The one that made it to the DSM cars was a narrow block specifically for fwd cars. There are adapter plates and certain trans out there to run for a swap.
Had an 86 they had electrical issues. I got an 89 best car in the world!!! Took a beating. Had wheel hop though. Turbo lag out of the hole. Stayed bumper to bumper wit a 90 mustang gt. I got into the car biz and would flip them whenever I could if you ever get one that runs bad it's probably a stuck wastegate. Grab the rod on the waste gate with a plyers and pull it back and forth and let her RIP it's like magic, fixed
thanks for the info i did this to my 87 Tsi and it worked turbo spools a lot easier, faster it seems like it's showing a little more boost at idle too, but i have to rebuild heads as i took the cap off, and all i seen was mayonaise....shit .
I had bloody heaps of them here in new Zealand. Bought 12 over the years for parts for my 83 EX lol.done heaps of mods in hindsight should of left it original
They are reliable & have alot of potential. It was a Group A car, Mitsubishi was throwing tonnes of money at it. The look was what made it so unique, but it was also very aerodynamic. They had 125kw-150kw & 290nm depending on the country, but there was also some 250kw AWD model's. Replacing the standard motor with one from the EVO series is a good idea🌟
yeah , the eclipse I think was a substitute when station / conquest faded but then dsm continued the 4g63 in galants talons lasers eclipse and evo but definitely like to find a starion too ! I had the 1st gen eclipse gs 1990 turbocharged and shouldn't of sold it. If not I've been thinking of a mighty Max with a 2.6 and station wheels
This is my dream car. This is what I want to buy. My dad used to have this and loved his car, but sold it, when we moved to Japan for my senior year in 2012 due to being in the military. He planned on retiring there and staying there (moms Japanese). its like 20K for a Starion in Japan and is hard to find the exact one my dad used to have. Im 23 now, still in Japan, and is trying to save up for one. I hope I get one one day.
Nice Video! I have owned 3 different StarQuest since 1993. All 1987 ESI-Rs. Still have my twilight blue one I bought in 1998. Have always had a soft spot for these! Just wanted to add on the what kind of car is that? The two most common I get are is that a Porsche 944? Or is that a supra with flare fenders? I actually like the fact most people don't know what they are!
I wish you the best of luck! Glad to see another car being saved! Too many are abused, and just thrown away, or parted out! I own an '89 Conquest-SHP, and I'm the original owner. She's family. I'm subscribed!
I love this car i own a 1987 conquest tsi for 24 years now and still love it its been in storage for the past 5 years and hope to get it road worthy again some day, by the way the shirt is awesome!!!
I bought a well-used '87 (white) in about 1992 and drove it 11 years. I always admired its looks, even though you could make out the shape of a Lancer under the flared fenders, fins, and spoiler. And it went like stink. I wished it had rack-and-pinion steering, however. And parts were expensive.
I Had a widebody EX years ago ..loved it , mine was absolutely mint and lowered with polished alloys. I still have a spare key for it even thou I sold it in ninty seven lol I remember a Prince video which had a lime green starion
about your joke/explanation of how the starion got it's name, i gave that exact explanation on another starion video years ago...i knew it was comic genius then but this just solidifies it...best part of the video. i had an 87...... it had all kinds of adjustments on the seats, volume controls on the steering wheel, auto matic wipers, a digital temp control heating/cooling system...it felt super modern with i bought it in 1998. epic car for empty country roads. i live overseas now and the part i miss the most is this car and good quality, empty roads....that and being 17...
Hoping this will be my first car, you guys are straightforward and chill as fuck. Didn’t know about the different body styles, learned something new. Entertaining and Informing. Subscribed
I had one for several years and I agree with almost everything you said. some of the facts were a little off would you like to know so that you can do an up in the future. 1-there was a flatty built in 1987, 2- they did use the 2.6L w/turbo in 1987.
@@SRMotoring not really. Well, not any good examples at an affordable price. I've seen them for $7k, Stock and I'm not willing to spend that much. The cargods seem to be shining down on me, I'm working on one I found upstate NY... Waiting on a reply. (I don't do social media platforms, only RU-vid. ) Thanks for the reply. I'll keep you posted on my possible purchase.
On that Mitsu 2.6 inline 4, how come they didn't continue with their Hemi Technology as a base, then add Turbo. Those Mitsu Hemis ran very strong in early-mid 1980's Dodge Aries K & Plymouth Reliants!
part of why they stopped making the Starion was because the eclipse replaced it, well when you think about it, the starion was marketed under Chrysler name plates, and being that the eclipse was sold under Chrysler as well, only now made in the US, Mitsubishi would no longer need ship the next batch of sports cars overseas saving them some money. Had the starion continued it would have ended up making the brand compete against itself for sales, the same can be said as to why the 3rd gen eclipse was not 4g63 or awd same goes for the 8th gen Galant, even though the rear subframes are pretty close to being an almost bolt in awd setup, because the then EVO 8 would then be competing with them to get your money lol I wish Mitsubishi would make a new Starion sports car if its turbo and rwd with an electric powered front wheels that the driver can shut off if they want to go drift or turn on for more grip.
Such an unloved and under appreciated car! I actually want one (even more than a Supra of the same year), but I want a showroom stock example, which would be next to impossible to find!
My very 1st car ever. Invested about $3K to a rebuilt engine but it only lasted so long that I had to donate it. Fortunately I was young and 19 at that time in the late 90s so i wasn’t really discouraged because i felt like this car was a vintage model for me. Anyway, I just ordered a diecast white color from amazon for my personal pleasure on its uniqueness model
In the US Market, narrowbodies were produced from 1983-1987, fatties were produced from 1986-1989. In the Japanese Domestic Market, these cars were sold from 1982-1990. Rarest USDM cars are 1989 Starions. By 1989, these things were lacking in performance for a relatively expensive car (20k usd / 2,200,000 yen).
My sister and I both had 85 Starions. Personally I'd find a Conquest and drop a 2JZ stage III turbo upgrade motor, T-400 tranny and adapter kit, suspension package and Dana 3:88 rear end with Brembo dual discs.
Yea that would be a pretty sweet build. I think I will try building the I'm g54b first, if it it doesn't work out my next choice would be a 4g64. Kinda would like to keep it in the Mitsubishi family.
I got "Is that a Porsche?" a lot. I think the 944 is the car it's confused with. I love that shirt! I don't have my Conquest anymore but I could get that shirt! Is it your merch?
I peeped, your 87' TSi, nice car. I have a 87' Sarajevo White Starion just like it. Pointing out one thing, the flatties were produced until '87 in the US Market, other than that, great info
Yep you are right my uncle bought one from a local dealership where we lived back in the summer of 88' a 1987 flatside Chrysler Conquest Turbo with the badges on both sides of the door in large letters, except it had the aluminum ventilated disc style rims, those models are super hard to come across, but i like them almost as much as the widebody but im enjoying my Tsi.
Hi I have an 88 with 82 k original miles on it. But it has the bottom side rail get rusted? what do you recomend in buying or getting this done at a reasonable price?
depends on how thick the rust is and how much time and money you want to spend....oh and what kind of result you want.. It never fails that the more time and money invested, the longer the job will last...(barring any sort of rip off situation)....But it's not always required. for example, if the rust is just a bit of surface rust without pitting, you could put in a little bit of time, not too much money, and still pull off a "like new" result. if the thing has big holes in it....you would need to weld....OR get super tricky with some metal screen, filler, a lot of sanding, and the nagging on your conscience that it's not really done right... i have found the rule of thumb for any project is there's no such thing as a "quick, cheap, high quality" job....
**THIS WAS MY 1ST CAR, IT WAS A 1985.5 BUILT IN DECEMBER WITH THE WIDE REAR FENDERS I ALWAYS COMPARED ITS FRONT END TO A 1985 PORSCHE 944, THE DISTANCE BETWEEN CLUTCH & BRAKE PEDALS WAS TOO CLOSE FOR MY SIZE 14 FEET, I HAD TROUBLE SHIFTING, & MOST OF THE TIME DROVE IT WITHOUT ANY SHOES ON....**
@@SRMotoring Yep. 1988 turbo. Runs, drives and is in decent shape, though needs a paint job someday. Been cleaning the interior the last week and fixing broke items. New speakers are going to be installed soon and rebuilding the rear spare tire cover.
Only for the dealer used collectable ones I found those ones for 50k on carsales but on gumtree ive seen several from $750 (not running) to $15k in decent looking condition (not certain on how high quality these are but they are somewhat available for cheaper)
Fortunately there are still a few sellers with some sense. I was able to find 2 examples running that were available for $10-15 grand. Once that type of ‘collector’ has a monopoly on them it’s all over. AW11 MR2s are already past the point of no return so I hope Starions can hold out for another few years.
Taylor Bee Yes the Conquest/Starion IS Rear wheel drive. They are AWESOME cars. I’ve owned my ‘88 Conquest TSI “SHP” since ‘92. It’s mint & beautiful, it’s 5 speed manual & posi trac rear end. Fun fun fun to drive!!👍
I own a ‘88 Conquest, I bought it in ‘92. Completely stock unmolested mint condition. I did have a complete color change custom pain job from Red to Black Pearl, done on it. StarQuest wide body’s have such sexy body lines. It’s my baby. By the way, do you sell the StarQuest shirt you are wearing in this vid? Like your vids, just subscribed👍 Looking forward to more Quest videos.
Thank you for subscribing! Yea the starquest is an awesome car. You can go to www.starquestshirts.bigcartel.com to order a starquest shirt and also check out www.sandrmotoring.com for our other shirts!
Anything else? Maybe he should hire sound and lighting techs, hair, makeup and wardrobe stylists and buy a teleprompter? Film in a studio instead of the garage?
As the original owner of my '86' Fatty, I can tell you I've never lost my love for this car. I must admit back then, she became budget problem, but am now getting her back in shape (garage has treated her well). I am looking for a throttle body (including the fuel mixer). If you know a source, please let me know at "aracknofobia@gmail.com".
