Yes! With solid-state drives leaving a PC running 24/7 at home is great for all sorts of things, not just ham radio. Mike, you are an awesome resource for us, and I don't know how you have time for work... seems like I see you online talking about ham radio all the time!

Thanks for the tips!

Another tip from experience. Have multiple methods to remote into the pc, remote utilities, teamviewer, etc. If one doesn't work you don't know if the computer crashed or the remote service is down. Also put the pc on a controlled power switch for emergency reboots. And as Mike said, set the BIOS to autoboot when power is applied.

Good point. I actually have 3. Anydesk, RDP and VNC.

Mike, great chatting with you the other day on the Flex Sales number! This video is interesting and will be something that I do with my station in the future. To date, I mostly operate from home, but have successfully used Flex Smartlink to run FT8 remotely. I found that remote success was directly related to the Wifi speed at the places that I stay. Also, as I have 1GB up/down at my house, making sure to hardwire (with CAT6) the flex was key. Nice video. Thanks.

Thanks, Mike. You saved me a bunch of misery. I'm in the process of building what will become my remote station and have been wondering about the need for a remote PC. I will also have Pi as an always-on station control computer running home-assistant for monitoring and control of the power for the 6400 and (now) power for the Windows PC, plus node-red to deliver a monitoring and control dashboard.

How do you deal remotely with thunderstorms? When I am away from my ham shack, especially the months of May through September, I completely disconnect the AC power from the amps, transceivers and accessories. I disconnect the antennas also. I also throw a knife switch that will disconnect the outdoor ground system from all the internal ground wires and ground plates. Usually during the summer months there is a thunderstorm somewhere within 30 miles of my qth all the time.

I ground my antennas and pray. There is no application that throws the coax out the window.

Mike, enjoyed your video. You are a great resource. You stated that you were using JTDX so I am wondering if you find an advantage in using JTDX over WSJT? I have been using Real VNC to run the computer at my remote location and it seems to work fine for me. I also have a SteppIR and control it with DDUtil on the remote computer which also seems to work ok, better now with the latest software update. Wondering how you control your SteppIR? Antenna Genius? Just an FYI, I am using Starlink at my home location and a fiber ISP at my remote location. It seems to be working ok most of the time. I have a download speed of 100+ with starlink most of the time with latency around 50ms or less. During the evening peak times I can usually count on speeds around 30 to 50mps. Too bad it's not more consistent like the fiber service. The remote site usually is constant at around 60mps.

I think JTDX pulls in the weaker ones better. It tries harder.

Is there value in this if I don’t have a rotating antenna and i only use voice at 100W? I thought the whole point of Flex Radio is to have everything needed to do that built into the radio? With love, Ken

Sort of. A FlexRadio handles the Radio side, which is the TX and RX part. That is our focus. It is only one part of the station operation. You have to think about everything you look at in your ham shack and if you have to power cycle it and things like that.

@@FlexRadioSystems Thanks for replying! Do you use the ‘remote PC’ to control remote reboot of the transceiver?
@johnspady840
@johnspady840 Год назад
@@kenstephens2955 with my own setup I can use a web browser on *either* the local PC (next to the physical Flex) to access a web relay to reboot the flex - OR - I can access that same web relay from my remote PC or Mac (that is “local” to me at home). The effect is the same - the web relay connected to the Flex causes the radio to shutdown. After that, then I turn the relay on again and the Flex powers back up. So a reboot can be had from anywhere with Internet access to the relay.

You can use FRStack to reboot the radio if you need to. Even over SmartLink
