Join me as i do a quick overview and comparison between the HGX-lite, a quality sherpa kit, and a Sailfin made from a cheap BMG clone.
Just a note, the HGX-lite and the sailfin (bmg) was purchased by me, the Sherpa-mini kit was provided to me by fabreek as part of the beta-testing of their Rook MK1 kit.

Good comparisons video, looking fwd to see u do another on weight and also the flow rate 😊. Thanks for sharing ❤ all the best to your 3D printing

Im so sorry about the sound quality on this one, my new microphone needs some work.

Oh no… I bought one for panda mini. At 27 usd without Motor I thought it was good. I’ll check if my bearing is missing.

The bearing on the back of mine can pop out it you tap it in the wrong direction. Once the motor is on everything is locked into place.

There is a new updated version of the HGX from haldis called the HGX-Oblique with helical drive gears and a smaller, lighter frame, the quality of it seems very nice however is it nearly twice as expensive as the standard unit. i have one for the Tronxy i'm building right now i will have to see how it performs in comparison to the old model

Interesting, I'll have to look into that, thanks!

There are some other differences. I have used 2 of the 3 (sherpa, HGX). The sherpa will wear out the housing in X time printing. The hinge area wears and the body where the filament passes through. For weight, the sherpa comes out on top. My HGX was 75 grams vs 35 for the sherpa. There is also the issue of torque. May not matter on slower printer, but at some point can be issue if you are pushing some filament. Seems the best bang for the buck is the CNC VZhextrudort. Very good quality with that one! Keep up the videos!

Valid points indeed. I'm not set up for doing too much testing, I just wanted to get at least some information out there on the HGX, not much out there

I am not quite understood which of the extruders you have mentioned have problems with the high speed prints

Good day, following up on my previous comments. I managed to fit a NEMA17 pancake stepper to my HGX-lite. with this very simple mod, I can now print up to 90 mm/s (the highest speed I have tested). I have a 400 mm^3 Core X-Y printer with 900 mm boden tube. It is not a direct feed. All one need is a simple adaptor/spacer and a 20T gear with 5 mm bore to fit the NEMA17. If anyone is interested, I can make the stl file for the adaptor availabe via Kanrod Creations.

Nice work! Upload it to printables 😉

You had to really examine them microscopically for something, to tell that there was a difference in the cubes

Im looking for reliable extruder for vase mode prints, what you think about Sherpa micro all metal? I’ll use it on my delta printer

Sherpa is really reliable. LGX, Hextrudort and Orbiter are other options awsell.

I wonder it~s max print volume ...

I haven't really tested max flow on it, its not really relative to what Im using it for, but I imagine its better than the sherpa due to the larger gears.

I'm deeply disappointed in mine. It slips constantly. I'm printing at 70 mm/s. I find better performance with very little pressure on the springed lever. Only just screwed in. Is there anything I could be doing wrong?

I had an issue with a missing bearing, would recommend a full disassembly of it and check the bearings.

I believe in giving fair reviews. I have taken the unit apart. All parts and bearings are present. It seems the manufactured tolarences are large...resulting in noticable play on all components. I did manage to "tune" the idler spring setting for optimal grib. As reported in many reviews, the moter torgue is lacking. I made my current setting 900 mA (RMS) and it made a noticable improvement. As reported, the moter slips when the pressure is beyond the extruder capability and not the gear grinding the filament. In essence a good thing. How did I do the tuning...I started with the screw just screwed in (minimal spring force) and extrude 20 mm of filament at 500 mm/min (g1 e50 f500). Thighning the screw in 1/4 turns until I got good no grinding. Actually I started noticing the moter slipping. That's when I increased the driver current. Originally 500 mA.

One of mine started skipping and did a complete teardown of a silver and a black one. It seems to me the silver one has different bearings. They are not as good as the black one. I've ordered new bearings to put in the silver one.

After some futher investgation, I found that the motor torque is insufficient. It is not the filament that slips. I can print up to 50 mm/s, faster than that the motor slips. I'm looking at rplacing the motor with a NEMA 17, or add a gearbox. I have not been able to find the suitable hardware for such a project.
