tbh when i first saw wangji's chinese name i thought it literally translates to 'forgetting the plane' and ive never stopped making a joke about it since. 忘机你什么时候不会忘飞机

"Hey, let's research character names for MDZS." Several hours later... "Hmmm...this Nie Huaisang seems suspicious."

Fun fact: Lan Xichen's xiao (vertical flute) is called Liebing, or "broken ice" in reference to his psyche at the end of the novel

This is Professor Ty's Chinese literature class. I'm not skipping.

Holy god, so much implicit meanings behind their names! We could only imagine how well-read MXTX is in order to get these names from Chinese ancient literature. Speaking of which, maybe even surnames that she came up for MDZS also has hidden meanings. For example, 江 for the Jiang clan because they live in Lotus Pier aka near the river; 蓝 for the Lan clan for wearing blue clothes and living in the sky (obviously); 金 for the Jin clan because of their golden robes and buildings; 温 for the Wen clan, which means "warm" and thus translates to their sun motif; 聂 for the Nie clan meaning "whisper", implying that you only hear rumours about it, etc. Even 魏 from Wei Wu-Xian can be separated into 2 characters: 委 [has many meanings depending on its usage but in this case, it probably means being appointed as in 委任, being entrusted as in 委托 or being wronged as in 委屈 (possibly all three of them)] and 鬼 [meaning ghost].

The SVSSS video idea is very, very good. If anything, it would be a fun exercise because that book is the entire circus.

Something I would like to add into Jin Guangyao Character name is that he should have been name Jin ZiYao. Different generations has a word that they should use for their name, for Jin Ling generation it's Ru, then for his father's generation both his father and Jin Zi Xuan has the word Zi, while the generation before that is Guang. Implicating that Jin Guangshan never wished to consider Jin Guangyao a legitimate heir to the Lanling Jin Sect.

As a huge SVSSS fan, I'd love to see a video where you dissect the names without knowing the full outcome of the novel! An excellent future video topic indeed. Because suggestions are easy I'd like to see; SY/SQQ/cucumber bro, LBH (the difference between Bing-ge and Bing-mei), SHQ/airplane bro, LQG, Mobei-jun and SHL.

I am loving these poem references. The one that's like "I want to sit in the green and forget about the plotting of the world" is a mood.

mxtx was once asked about how she name her book title and characters, all she answered was “用心起書名，用直覺起角色名。” putting in the mind/heart to name the book, and use intuition to name the characters. from what she said, in my opinion mxtx probably didn’t intentionally flip through thousands of books and go on to the fortune telling websites just to piece together a perfect name for each of her characters. She a person who reads enormous amount of books and literature since young, therefore i would say the meaning of these words and how they’re phrased in poems had already became a bit like her second nature. She understands her characters very well and she probably kind of knew in the very beginning about how the story would go based on how they would interact when coming across one another. regarding the fortune telling stuff, since she said she uses her intuition to name her characters, i bet it’s either that mxtx has some knowledge about this field or it’s a coincidence haha. if she doesn’t have any knowledge about it, she’s probably the one with natural talent XD

For hanguangjun I saw it as the embodiment of light like how people describe him for being perfect and will remain pure.

Another video idea could be the names or the weapons of the characters. In WWX's case are very straightforward but in LWJ, LXC, JGY and specially in JC's case, they are a little sad and complex. They do hint things about their development in the book. And yes, several are based on poems too.

Everyone has awesome name meaning, but jin guang yao is mind blowing ! 天啊

Senior Sister's name also makes sense because she "hates to be apart" from her 2 brothers and she hates when the 3 of them are separated.

Wei yings names matches with the talk about" Xian Xian is only three"! During the yanli's soup eating.

This is so interesting and reveals just how deep the novel is. I especially loved hearing about the Chinese poems and the wisdom of, if something is not yours, you do not need to have it.

This is probably irrelevant but I typed in all the MDZS characters' names in the fortune telling website thing that Ty references and below are characters with the top 5 scores (the results will surprise you): 1) 99.5% - Xiao Xingchen, Lan Qiren, Qin Su 2) 99.0% - Jiang Cheng, Yu Ziyuan 3) 97.0% - Jin Zixuan, Wen Ruohan, Su She 4) 95.0% - Wen Chao 😡 5) 94.0% - Lan Zhan, Lan Huan, Nie Huaisang, Wen Qing Honourable mentions to Mo Xuanyu (91.0%) and Jin Zixun (90.0%).

This is one of the first times I’ve been interested in poetry. And honestly, I’m totally going to look at more.

Wow, I didn't know Wangji is taken from a phrase that talks about forgetting worldly affairs. For the most part, I interpreted 机 in 忘机 as opportunity, as in 机会, instead of mechanics 机器, so Lan Zhan's name could mean "forgotten opportunity", which is in line with his personal narrative within MDZS. The poetic reference also adds up to his character.

collaborating with Kicktor is very interesting! I learned so much about The Untamed characters. Another character that I wished you would mention Xue Xiang (the one with sad background and missing finger as someone ran over his hand) something that you mention Ty. A person with a lot of potential to succeed may not turn to evil deeds if given a difference way to lead a life (or given a different guidance by parents or teacher) case in point Jin Guan Yao and Xue Xiang. Fascinating how a name and the character(s) used are chosen so carefully and wisely, both in fiction and in general as well (as far as I am aware of?), chosen based on the meaning of the characters, the compatibility of first and last name, the fortune such a name would bring etc. . 我觉得魏婴和蓝湛的名字来自道德经吧。婴儿本来就是道家经典里常见的一个意向，“专气致柔，能如婴儿乎？”，当然也就是博主解释的纯真本性无欲无求的意思。蓝湛的名字和道号来自道德经中“和其光，同其尘，湛兮似或存”，和光同尘是为含光君。在这句里湛是透明的意思。
