I always assumed these engines were originally steam and converted to diesel, which I thought was a shame, I would never have thought they were built with diesel engines.
Steam-outline diesels is something of an internal swear-word for me. But it is shocking that all the locomotives have some historic prestige - closer and closer to 100 years of age in fact!
Percy the railway cat used to catch this train to the sealife centre, watch the fish for the day & then get the last train back! There’s even a book about him!
When I went last year they had all 4 locomotives out getting them prepared for the anniversary weekend. I had a great day and the driver was showing me the single line token system then said I could ride at the front of the first coach. Well worth a visit if you can.
As a licensed mechanic, I would be "honored" to work in an engine shed like that. The cleaner the shed the more work can be done. What a place to spend a day, sand-surf and sun AND trains.... Thanks to Darren, Steve and Phil for their time and effort.
@@AdventureMe if you where in Tamworth with your band you could of went to Thomas Land at Drayton Manor 🤣. I took my daughter there when she was about 4 I think my husband and I enjoyed it more 😄 🤣.
I have a very fond memory of that train ride. I was taken on it with my grand-parents & uncle, all sadly departed from this world now. We then went to watch the large boat display on the lake there too! Another excellent video Darren, and a nice trip down memory lane. Thank you
Very interesting, I spent six weeks every summer at Scarborough with my mother staying at Westbourne Grove. My mother would always get the backseats going and tip the backs over so we were at the front going back. Lovely childhood memories thank you for sharing.
Thank you Darren. The North Railway is great place to visit. I have been on railway there when staying at Whitby. So many fantastic memories from Yorkshire.
I remember it being packed in the seventies on grandma days. It needs expanding imo to make more of it for the town. Especially since scalby mills has nothing left to visit.
Great to see this again. We used to make an annual trip here from York with my Grandma in the 1970s. A special train was organised for railway widows and orphans. Nothing significant has changed.
Great video again Darren, interesting to hear all about the history and connections with pleasure beach and golden acre park. The guy’s there look to have given you a great insight into the railway 😊🚂
That was absolutely fantastic, what wonderful locos they are. I could sit on one all day. I so enjoyed that thanks Darren. Thanks for taking me along. Please stay safe and take care
My mother told me about herbert carr who lived on her street in Scarborough apparently he saw the train coming and tried to jump clear but hit the pole shown in the picture and was killed she said his mother was hit hard by his death and kept the curtains closed for a week in mourning which people did in them days.
Brilliant video...loved seeing behind the scenes too. When I was a child my uncle lived in Scarborough, at Scalby Mills actually, and riding the train to Peasholm Park was one of my favourite things to do when we visited. I always thought the engines were real steam engines though. I still love a trip on the railway and a walk back along the sea front :)
Visited Scarborough many times as it's not very far from Middlesbrough. I have only ever travelled on the railway once and I thoroughly enjoyed the trip. It is well worth a visit if people are in the area, nice park to walk through is a bonus. I look forward to your next video.
Incredible day. What fun you must have had. Steve and Phil obviously love their trains. You could hear it in their voices when they spoke. So interesting. Bet you loved getting to drive the engine and pull the horn. Great vlog. Thank you.
Another great find . It's great to see the original engines sympathetically up dated . Looking forward to having a ride on them next time I'm in Scarborough
Wow great video Darren I visited Scarborough many times over the years with my late parents mostly during the mid 70s and 80s and indeed last time was I recall in 2013 there abouts before my late father could no longer drive his car due to a stroke but I never visited the railway but a very interesting and informative video and thanks for sharing this Darren 👍
Cheers Sir Darren!!! Another example of how a video should be done. Outstanding as ever. We Are going to Scarborough in a week or two so we will have a shufty at the Railway. If I was allowed by the wife,I would love to build a 20" railway in the garden. Or even an O gauge. Thanks again 😁😁😁🚂🚂
Excellent video as always Darren. Visited it earlier this year and the guys there were the epitome of being helpful and friendly. Told them I was part of a 12 inch to the foot scale railway reopening and they took me round the engine shed and works. Could not have been more accommodating or friendly. Certainly knew their stuff and were obviously incredibly proud of their locos, the rolling stock, the railway as a whole and it's heritage. The condition in which everything is kept is a testament to that. Well done Steve and the whole team and to you Darren for making such a complimentary and excellent video. Cheers.
Just for clarification about the scale of the railway you’re involved with, wouldn’t 12 inch to the foot equal full size locos, stock, and standard gauge, 4 ft 8 1/2 inches? As you may have guessed, I’m not entirely au fait with the gauges and scales used for replica/miniature railways.
A Fabulous insight of the past and present, always explained with fondness and knowledge, which you do so well. That's why your videos are so loved for. Thanks Darren. 👌
Hello Darren how are you and Barney love your vidio I love Scarborough me and Elaine and my Andrew god bless him went on the train and it was fantastic and we have been on the water shoot there at pheshome park take care stay safe xx
When you are there you do hear comments about the diesels, but the history is very important. They were built that way, they are over 90 years old, and they should always remain as that. They are wonderful. It's just a shame they can't extend the track a little........
Brilliant content I really enjoyed everything about this vlog.As a teenager I volunteered on the Welshpool and Llanfair Railway so this was right up my street. Thanks and cheers.!
Great video! Posidon reminded of Gordon from Thomas The Tank Engine 🤣 Triton reminded me of Henry 🤣 also from Thomas. Excuse my spelling btw lol. You had the look of "look I'm on a choo choo!!" Always a wave lol
well darren this channel is certainly exceeding all the outer limits long may it continue the brilliant work,ps was doing a bit in rothwell thorpe and llofthouse last week
If you ever find yourself in California you should check out the tilden park steam trains in Berkeley. Redwood valley railway. They are of similar size but are oil fired steam locos.
So well presented as usual. I'm always impressed and fascinated by your films/documentaries Normally I'm a grumpy old fossil 65+ VAT yet you make day. With kindest regards and thanks. Francis Newmarch
Great vid Darren . Fascinating to see these attractions and get the history behind them . Have never visited Scarborough but after seeing your vids on various places need make a visit . Look forward to your next insightful explore .
Hi Darren, superb video, your very lucky to drive those beauties. That was really sad to hear about the crashes they had though. Seeing the trains on their sides ,so sad about the driver, thinking were they full of passengers.
Love this railway, remember these Diesels were built by a well known Steam building firm during the depression to keep everyone busy, because of this it was so cost effective to run contributed to it's success and why they had the money to buy a second locomotive. These are historically important locos in their own right, If you want steam go to the RHDR.
A nice little railway system is this one, Darren. The locos are immaculate, indeed, but I never knew that Hudswell Clark's actually manufactured narrow gauge machines like these. They used to produce the standard gauge industrial locomotives, mainly. Nice to see you having a bash at the driving, you did well. I reckon you've got the potential to qualify for main-line driving on the rail network, because your interest in railways is very much noticeable on your videos. Many thanks for this most enjoyable production.
I did mention you, and they still let me on the train 😁 Watching your video first made it all even more enjoyable. Highlight was getting up close to the old chair lift stations, wish they would reinstate that!
me and my partner went on the train yesterday at peaseholm park when a tree had fallen over the track and he had to radio for help with saws to remove it.the staff was great i have put it on youtube as i videod it
Great video, brought back memories for me as a 'Scarborough Lad". If other memories serve me correctly, I was once told that when the line opened, the locos were diesel but had a steam generator for the effect... unfortunately steam and diesel fumes proved to be an effective paint stripper!! The steam generators were removed shortly after. Can you,or anyone else, confirm this?
LOVE IT! Where I come from down here in Kent, in Tonbridge we had a miniature railway situated in the "sports ground". My brother an me use to ride it in the 70's. It's probably been ripped up now. Kids wanna play Fortnite on their phones. On a sideline (or branch line) my Dad was a Fireman at Tonbridge West Yard in the 60's. I got to be a Signalman in a nice warm signal box in the 90's. P.S. I've recieved my ADVENTURE ME B.R. t-shirt. Thanks brother.
@@AdventureMe You're right my friend. We live on such an amazing little island full of such history and natural beauty. It is a shame it seems the digital-world is so enticing and seductive to young people now. This is why what you are doing is especially relevant and important; collating and making available histories of our rich industrial heritage. So glad to have found your channel and to be a patreon.
You should com to the NYMR (North Yorkshire Moors Railway) where granted at the moment it’s majority diesel but we normally run steam and no steam outline diesels
I dont think British Weather and overall costs are going to allow it. I found the rooms had been made smaller (it was designed for the moderate well off and their maid and butler to attend them and since then its gone travelodge sized . Obviously the correct side has the impressive views but its too big to be a niche hotel like Morecambe one could be. Perhaps if a non-football shirts rule could be introduced it might be better but its the people paying the money that count.
Hey Darren How do these locomotives compare to those on the Romney Hythe and Dymchurch Railway? These don’t run on steam as those on the RHDR do! Nevertheless, they look fabulous!
Happy memories as a kid and summer hols in Scarborough including rides on the North Bay Railway. Now in my 60's I re visited Scarborough a few years ago and was delighted to see the NBR still running, so I had to have another ride on it. Being into railways I noticed the use of single line tokens, a great idea. Hoping to visit again before the end of this season and hopefully take some photos, is it possible to visit the engine shed if you ask nicely?
Great video.First was on in I think 1953 when I was five .I think it is mentioned in the history of Basset Lowke, who were great builders of steam locos in all the miniature gauges.I think the problem was that steam takes time to raise but the diesel can be started with turn of a key. and does not require boiler certification each year.
Me and my Grandad went to Cleethorpes Light Coast and had a steam outline Diesel IT LOOKED TERRIBLE then we saw its Sister railway North bay Now when i saw it im not joking you i thought it was a steam loco. BUT it was worth it.
I think you've forgotten one engine which is the only proper steam engine. Think its called Georgina or something and is green, very small and built in-house at Peasholm mostly in 2016.
You will be in the credits on the newer ones, I add them into the videos I make at the time. Some of these were made weeks or months ago like this one. The latest Blackpool ones you will be in. Thanks for your support mate.
@@stephenharper9961 I film a video and edit it the same week if I can, I add the members at the time to the credits. And then I upload it and schedule it for release later in the year. So some of these are from ages ago. Keep looking, you will see it appear soon.
