Join me for a behind the scenes tour around the Central Tramway Funicular Cliff Railway in South Bay, Scarborough. We take a look inside the engine room at all the workings to drive the funicular up and down the hill, we also get underneath the track and inside the control room to operate the tramway.

Darren you jammy sod getting a special behind the scene look around. Loved when you said the motor wouldn't fit in a a Ford Escort!!! That takes me back to when a Ford Cortina was a popular car (showing my age now) suitable for boy racers 😎 the usual catch phrase of when a bus/truck etc was being driven fast was 'what's he driving a Cortina GT' 😀 Stay safe, DougT the Mancs pensioner

I was fascinated as a kid by the wedge, which opens the car door along with the station one. The control box used to have a wonderful brass drum-type controller, with Up and Down notches each side of the central Stop position. I don't know why the 'modernisers' can't see that such things are worth preserving. To me, they are a fundamental part of the whole system.

The motor and gearbox are exactly like a lif system (elevator) with a worm drive gearbox.(my last job involved lifts) Even dow to the 4 cables on the cars and the safety cable, if the safety cable stretches too much it drops some latchs to stop the cars going down at high speed, there's probably a speed detector on the safety cable as well that does the same, apart from the incline, the only difference is that one car would be a balance weight The squealing you hear is more likely to be the electronic control which turns the motor into a speaker which is why you hear it., the electronic control is called a 'variable frequency drive'

The Victorians made some amazing machines. This uses very little power a small motor moving all that machinery by the way the cars are balanced. I went on these many times in the past and remember them being put in the middle at night. I think it must of closed earlier in those days. Interesting the other one is still powered by water. I will have a ride on this next time I go to Scarborough, save my legs a bit

Unsual configuration of the tracks though, bullhead (95R) S1 chairs, flatbottom rail (113LB), with bracing around what look like Scotches (Used to secure the points rails from moving in crossings) securing the rail in place. As a Child I holidayed in Scarborough and would have rode on all of the Tramways, I believe there were 3or4 at one time from the age of 3/4. Also the one at Saltburn by the Sea. As my Grandmother came from Saltburn. The Zealand Hotel in Saltburn was unique, as it had its own Railway Platform. As you can probably tell I am from a Railway Family. My Father was a Driver in the days of Steam as was his uncle. My Grandfather was a Signalman. I just love anything to do with Railway, especially the History.

What you pointed at wasn't the motor! That would be the reduction gearbox - the motor was to the right and drives a worm gear in the gearbox. This then turns a worm wheel gear and the wheel off the shaft.
@AdventureMe
@AdventureMe 2 года назад
Thanks Alexis
@cyberprog
@cyberprog 2 года назад
@@AdventureMe No worries - I saw you got it right later on in the video - but feel you may have missed an important bit of info in terms of the gearbox and how it effectively acts as a safety mechanism. The Worm Wheel cannot drive the Worm Gear (screw) - so when the motor brakes it effectively stops the main flywheel from turning. It means that when they stop the cars, there's no risk of the cars moving back down if one was higher, once the motor slows the flywheel down it would prevent any movement. Interestingly when the motor stops it can't fully stop, it actually has to keep turning as the flywheel brakes as if the motor stopped things within the gearbox would get very upset!
@tooleyheadbang4239
@tooleyheadbang4239 2 года назад

There’s a similar tramway at Saltburn-by-the-Sea which uses gravity plus water to work. There are tanks under each carriage and they fill the tank under the top car until it’s heavier than the one at the bottom then gravity does the rest. At the bottom the tank is emptied and the water pumped back up to the top.
