Heart disease is the world's leading cause of death. For years, the diet-heart hypothesis, which centers on high cholesterol as the primary culprit, has dominated the medical discourse. But now, we're beginning to appreciate the complexity and nuance of how the outer workings of our environment influence the inner workings of our physiology and risk for heart disease.
In today’s episode of a new series I’m calling Know Your Numbers, I deep dive into the Functional Medicine approach to assessing cardiovascular risk and why this is key to preventing and, in some cases, reversing cardiovascular disease.
You can test your cardiovascular risk with Function Health, a company I co-founded. It has been a lifelong dream for me. Function is the first-ever membership that includes 100+ lab tests and personalized insights from globally renowned doctors based on your results. Join Function at FunctionHealth....

What sucks is that I NEED a doctor to order the tests. I just can walk into Quest diagnostics or other facility and tell them I want to check my lipids or other blood work. Unless I have a "prescription" for it, I can't get blood work done. This needs to change. ---------------------- EDIT: Thanks for all the input. Excuse my ignorance please. I only ever went to doc every couple years for a 'check up' They ordered blood work... I'm doing my own check ups now.

My experience; Pravostatin "made me feel as if" I was having a stroke(severe head pain abnormal for me) made my heart race. I feel lucky to be alive after taking it for almost two weeks. Lipitor made my muscles very very sore. I took myself off statins. I am doing well but always talk to your Dr. By the way, I feel better. I have heart failure/damaged heart/clogged artery but grew two new collateral arteries so I live.

@@Horror_Film_Aficionado Lipitor/Atorvastatin caused very sore muscles in my arms and legs; losartan caused a very nasty pain/heat in the center of my back; pravastatin caused my heart to race, blood pressure to go way up, a sharp mean pain in the center of the top of my head down into my head with "pounding or throbbing blood". pravastatin was the worst for me. The pain in my head woke me up. I got out of bed, took an aspirin, put ice on the top of my head, drank plenty of water and prayed..; did not want to call an ambulance; I figured if I had a stroke I wanted to die. I made that decision. I lived thru it and never took pravastatin again. It's been months now and my system has calmed down and am doing well. Lipitor common side effects are muscle aches to severe loss of memory but they don't like to let ppl now that. Best of luck to you if you are on any of these They effect each person a little different.

So much great information in this video. I really need to have all of these tests done by I don’t think my doctor will do them. I would love to see a doctor at the Ultra Wellness Centre and join Function Health but I’m in Australia. I have a strong family history of strokes and heart attacks and many family members needing triple or quadruple bypass. My dad’s cardiologist said I need to get checked out due to family history but all my doctor did was a cholesterol test.

What is truly heartbreaking is that you have to be wealthy to be healthy. Not everyone has the money to get tests, live organically, and eat clean meats. The cost of things is going up daily and the quality is worsening daily. Also, depending on where you live in the world; you don't have access to fresh food - it's all shipped from other places and sent green (nutrient value is lost in transport). I do the best I can, but lack of money is definitely a factor.

I had insomnia, muscle pain, , my liver ALT went from 19 to 44. I am getting off the statin. I am doing a drastic diet change. Taking everything to help my liver. Thank you. Heart disease is the number one killer of people today and cancer is number two. Being over weight is the number one factor leading to an early death. People who are over weight have higher risks for high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes and cancer. Even children today have signs of artery disease. Fast foods and sugary drinks have long term consequences. There is an obesity epidemic today where over 60% of the population is overweight or obese. What is common today and "NORMAL" is not healthy. The average person today is not healthy and is taking medications. Heart attacks were once only common in people over 65. Today people in their 40 are having heart attacks. Add more plants and vegetables to your diet and less junk and overly processed foods

A key point in the slaying of the cholesterol-heart hypothesis is how exactly do the LDL particles get through the endothelial cell wall. LDL molecules are huge, they certainly can`t get through the ion channels in the cell wall. Anyway if this were the case why are there no plaques in veins? And why are all arteries and veins not evenly coated in plaques, why only in certain areas? LDL does not magically diffuse through the endothelial cell wall and then back out again on the other side of the endothelial cell to deposit itself on the artery wall - mechanistically impossible...

I recently got my results from Function Health My LDL was 115, my HDL was 70, and my triglycerides were 46. Pretty good, right? ApoB was 96 Particle number was over 1600 (should be under 1100) High LDL-small High LDL-medium I had my particle count under 1200 in April because I completely cut out all saturated fat, but for two months prior to testing I tried having an egg or two in a little butter a few days a week and had seafood in a little butter a few times a month. Other than that I keep a strict plant based diet with fish 2-3 times a week. Every time I add ANY animal food back in my diet my numbers skyrocket. I’m a super responder to saturated fat so I now just stay away. I also have really high Lp(a) at 330 nmol/L so it’s even more important that I get my particles and ApoB down. A1C was 4.9 and glucose was 83. I’ve always had a really low A1C because I rarely snack or eat sugar.

A new Triglycerides Glucose Index is a good measurement. If you live in the US, simply take Triglycerides multiplied by Fasting Glucose and divided the product by 2000. The ideal range is under 4. Mine is (57 x 87) / 2000 = 2.48, which is good.

Thanks for the interesting videos! Can you talk about resting heart rates and maximum heart rates? From literature I have read, most experts say we should not pass 85% of MHR when exercising. Does the MHR only based on chronological age? Or can we use our biological calculate the MHR? For example: A male with a chronological age of 60 would have a MHR of 160. Let's say his biological age is 50, so could we use 170 as his MHR?

That ( unfortunately ) is Western medicine . Take drugs to fix one problem which causes a secondary problem which keeps you you coming back to the doctor. This is especially true of the cancer industry - unfortunately radiation and chemotherapy can both cause secondary cancers years later . Treatment for cancer also increases your risk for heart disease years later. In fact , I know of people who had life threatening cardiac damage FROM their chemotherapy. My friend's sister in-law now has terminal congestive heart failure which was caused by her chemotherapy for breast cancer decades ago. Awful.
