I used hide glue mixed with sawdust to fill the pores on this rosewood om. After many years not using it I had forgotten how well it worked. It is easier to scrape or sand than any filler I have used. Give it a try but always test for compatibility with your finish and appearance on a piece of scrap. See the finished guitar by clicking the link below.

Give it a try. I'll be doing another rosewood build sometime in the not too distant future and will definitely use hide glue again. Franklin makes the Titebond liquid hide glue which is more convenient to use. I haven't gotten around to testing it with pumice but plan to soon. Thinking of mixing it with charcoal dust on the rosewood to accent the grain. Just a thought. I also plan to do a thin wash coat of glue to saturate the grain initially. Also try a wash coat of lacquer to seal the filled wood and make it pop. There's no end to experimenting in lutherie. Will be posting the finished om video soon. It turned out beautiful. Conduct your own appearance and compatibility test on scrap and good luck with your build! Thanks for watching.

I’ve been doing this on my classical builds for a while now. For me, it all started when I mixed hide glue with some ebony dust to fill the fret slot ends since I nip the tangs back for a much cleaner look and feel. After that success I decided to try it as a grain filler and was hooked. So much easier than the epoxy method or shellac and pumice. I do use the bottled hide glue to create a paste. Works great and you can either sand it or use a damp rag to cut back after applying and giving it a little time to partially set up. I agree that epoxy is a pain despite less shrinkage. Aquacoat although I’ve good luck with it it does require many applications.

Definitely the easiest method I've used. Good to hear from fellow luthiers. Thanks for watching Joe.
