For me, the cutscenes were so well executed (technically) with such great characters and voice acting that I honestly always looked forward to every single one of them. But you definitely also have to like the style they were going for here and if you don't fully, the cutscenes could be a bit bloated
That has been my complaint with MS exclusives. Their cut scenes suck. Halo Infinite for example only had one great intro scene to establish the genre but then they gave us nothing to look forward to. I find that to be the thing that sets PS games apart
@@TekkLuthor well, for Halo I can see it. They simply didn't give us cutscenes with action but only once with dialog (which is a decision by the devs, one that not everybody will like) But I think Hi-Fi Rush had great Cutscenes over all and also quite a few with great action in them. The problem from this video were that some dialog scenes were too long which I could see but the overall quality of the cutscenes is for what style they went for pretty great in my opinion
I haven't even noticed them being long, they're Into The Spiderverse quality, hand-posed models with genuinely entertaining writing. I'm always screengrabbing them and looking forward to the next
This game really feels like it was made by indie developers, you can tell that lots of passion went into making this game as pristine as possible. The environments are beautiful, flashy and very detailed too!
Is pretty much a indie game. This game was devs by Young devs inside Tango. This was a passion project from the director and so he picked the young devs and make them use this game as "gaing experience". They weren't expecting this game to be such a giga bomb success. This game core elements were made by mostly Junior Devs inside the studio
I think I was most surprised how solid the writing is. Some genuinely funny moments and you actually kinda like the characters as it goes along. This is coming from someone who didn't really like the artsyle at first either
One thing I like is that I’m pretty sure there’s an accessibility option that straight up puts a beat gauge on the bottom of the screen. So if you have problem following it musically you can follow it visually.
You know a channel is good when you watch a Before You Buy about a game you've finished (and loved). Game absolutely nails gameplay, pacing, art style, audio and writing. A 10/10 must play!
@@smellywaffels1967 you've left at least 3 hate comments on this video alone 🤔 i don't think you've played it, i think you're just salty it's not on PlayStation 😂
Got this off of game pass and couldn't stop playing it. This game gave definite Jet set radio vibes and a lil sunset overdrive. Definitely gonna play it again and the sounds track was dope
I just recently started (pretty late, I know) and I find the idea of a constant metronome playing so that you can have a fun combat experience very amusing for some reason
I loved this game not because of all the other games it reminded me of, but simply because it’s fun, just a really fun game and nowadays it seems we don’t get much of those anymore 😅
Oh stop with that bs. It’s such a lamé cliche thing to say. This is the best time to be a gamer. Last year had two of the best games ever made. Seems like you just have bad taste because this game is not that good at all and Elden Ring, God of War, Sifu, Tmnt Shredder’s Revenge; Xenogears and many more from last year are way better games.
@@smellywaffels1967 lately games feels like a grind than being a game for fun The ones you mentioned are fun though Games that has tons of level progressions or live service sucks balls
Finally all sorts of bloggers are starting to notice the game. Complaints about cutscenes are very strange. This is just one of the strengths of the game. Even if we cut out the entire gameplay, we get a great goofy fun cartoon. What are you talking about? So much creativity and love has been invested in them, I ONLY because of them played the game for the second time in order to notice all sorts of details and references and enjoy the animation.
True. As Falcon said, I think it's "his" problem with the cutscenes, not that the cutscenes have a problem. For me, I love every single bit of the game. From the cutscenes, gameplay, music, art... it's so refreshing and fun. I love it. Definitely an early GOTY candidate imo.
From this video cutscenes seem to have a weird lag to them unlike the gameplay portion. This likely has some tie to why they feel so long. It makes me feel sick which is something that has never happened in any game before and I haven't seen a game go from perfectly smooth in play to what I can only describe as dropping to what feels like 15 fps.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 That's the thing, the devs are going for that 15 fps in their cutscenes coz it gives motion a staccato hand-drawn animation quality. They are trying to do an authentic TV cartoon look. In 2D television, animations are animated on twos (or between 12 and 15 fps) You can watch more detailed explanation in Digital Foundry's tech review for Hi-Fi Rush.
@@Buglin_Burger7878 The cutscenes are animated in 15 fps to immitate a "hand-drawn" style, and it works so well. This is the exact same effect used in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Pure speculation based off of your comment: I'm guessing you're a younger fellow who hasn't seen many hand-drawn animated shows, which is why it must've felt jarring. You'll grow to love it.
This game has shown that alot of reviewers are 1) very slow at getting content out this game is almost 2 weeks old now 2) are afraid to give out perfect scores to niche games 3) have subjective opinions they like to pass off as fact. Like the dash mechanic do you not try to even press buttons to see what they do? You complain about the tutorials then complain about them not telling you about the dash Reviewers are becoming obsolete due to gamepass and I'm all for it
The cutscene transitions are seamless. The combat is fire! Wonderful game! More games NEED TO DROP LIKE THIS! that way no bs narratives came be pushed.
Usually in these types of games I rarely bother memorizing combos, and I always end up just using the basic attacks, but Hi Fi Rush's combat is so simple yet fun that I ended up learning all the combos and using them all the time.
This is an absolute gem, it reminds me of the Dreamcast days and it's nice to see a game where its just fun, you know? I miss games like this and I can't wait for Bomb Rush Cyberfunk too :)
Funky, Fresh, and Familiar really describe this game well. A literal dream come true game for me. Im sure there are gonna be GREAT games this year, but this is EASILY my GOTY.
Usually not my kind of game but the combat looks interesting with the rhythm elements and the art style looks really cool. Zanzo hitting the JoJo poses is great lol
When you hit that zen "flow" and are gliding around perfectly in time to the beat dismantling robots it is genuinely one of the most engrossing gaming moments you'll ever experience. Doom Eternal and Elden Ring are probably the only other games I've felt as "connected" to the gameplay as I do with this game. It's hard to describe but when you feel it for the first time it's serious euphoria. Very clever game design.
This game is absolutely amazing and incredibly fun. How do I know you ask? I've been willing to put up with the pain of cloud streaming on my xbox one just to play this game, that is how I know.
How did that work out for you? Doesn't cloud streaming make it hard to keep the beat because of delay? I might have to dust off my old xbone for this one. Looking good!
@@tobiaseriksson475 Like it was mentioned, you don't have to keep the beat to enjoy this game. Plus if I'm going to use cloud streaming, I tend to play at times where I can make maximum use of the bandwidth. Not saying cloud streaming is good, there are times when I can't play because of lag, but when it's good this game is a lot of fun and will almost guaranteed be one of the first games I play when I eventually upgrade.
There's some serious genius gameplay design on show here. If they can translate that ability over to other games they are 100% gonna start making a serious name for themselves.
I'll give you MY before you buy. Do it. The game is insanely fun, easy to pick up, has tons of genuinely funny humor, well written characters, and is a genuine joy to play. It's a breath of fresh air for the gaming industry, having a game built around having fun, instead of making money. Please, please, PLEASE support the devs!
I was initially sold on this hopping in, but the deeper I got, the more I loved it. It reminded me a bunch of Ultimate Spider-Man for a few reasons. The humor, cutscenes, and the main VA, Robbie Daymond, someone familiar to the role of Spider-Man. This was such a breath of fresh air, I laughed so often and enjoyed the music the whole way through.
Ultimate Spider-Man was straight up one of the best games of my childhood. I was never able to beat Green Goblin though. I still have it and my save, all i ever wanted to do was beat it so I can free roam as Venom lol
after all the same sauce again and again by bigs companies, this game just feel like a gem. a must play and especially seeing the disapointment provided by recent games like forspoken and saints row, having such a clean and polished new ip appearing when we didnt even expect it just give me the GOTY Vibe. just like how elden ring slammed 2022, this game will certainly be on of the GOTY 2023 contenders
I love the Saturday morning carton feel it has , not everything is supposed to be an Oscar aiming type series, the vibe just feels so nostalgic of simpler times
As someone who has beat this game, If you think the cutscenes are to long then I think the games writing might not be your thing. Even the longest cutscenes in the game are only a few minutes and I found them fun, like a 90's cartoon written in the modern era.
Often the forgotten aspect in videogames but vital. Hi-Fi Rush does sound effects very well. To the point that by the environment and movement / attacking alone without the music you can still make something nice to hear by yourself. Sound effects especially in a rythm game such as Hi-Fi Rush are crucial and it definatelly delivers, ramping up and driving you forward with every attack, dash and even footstep. It's obvious that the group are major fans of Jojo and I believe a good portion of their sound effects quality was inspired by the series.
Thanks for the vid! I look forward to playing this game, the OST is fire. I find a lot of reviewers complain about cutscenes these days and that is really unfortunate. I get it, you guys only have so much time for reviewing/playing each game, but when a studio actually cares about their game and make use of talented voice actors, I wish you guys would not be negative about the cutscenes slowing you down. We need more quality in the industry, not less.
Which is strange, if they complain it in one game but they are fine with another one and its way longer game, so it's probably have to do with the person too.
As someone who takes a long time to get good in a game, the tutorial was really appreciated. I understand they can be annoying, but having a need for a tutorial in most game, I can say this one is one of the best I’ve seen in a while. I grew up playing with manuals so having a deep dive tutorials on every mechanic(most are skipable) is appreciated. Keep in mind not every gamer is a hardcore souls master. Many of us out there needs some help getting good, especially younger people who are not experienced in precise gameplay. I’m a best at monster hunter, but it took me 40 hrs more than my friend to be able to high level stuff because the laerning curve is steep. This games never punish you for being bad. It rewards you for being good. Unlike darksouls where the dread fo loosing everything is what motivates you to get better, the simple pleasure to be on beat is what drives you here.
In my humble opinion this game is absolutely a masterpiece, the most epic bossfight was Roquefort his music and his wolf form was an absolutely banger,i think this game deserves awards, maybe not goty but awards ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I just had open heart surgery and we are having a baby, money is tight but I would definitely be buying this game if we had the money for it! It looks absolutely amazing and a throwback to games of my childhood!
Also I'm not skipping the cinematics in my second playthrough or thrid, because something yo ushould have mentioned is that this game has full customizable AUDIO options for a ton of languages, so if you know more than one language or you are learning another its very good to make use of that!
Didnt expect much from this game, had no prior background about it bust just went ahead and tried it. In the first few minutes I noticed that even Chai's steps were always, ALWAYS with the beat I had a huge smile on my face. Maybe not for everyone, but if youre looking for something fresh and interesting this game wont let you down.
I love how the use of music, high energy & visual style embodies Scott Pilgrim vs. The World & tbh i really wish we got that game instead but ill definitely check this out cuz I'm a slut for cell shaded graphics.
I'm on the last boss fight right now and tbh even tho it's marketed as a rhythm game, it's barely one at all, the theme is definitely centered around music but it's definitely not integral to how you PLAY the game. The first 2-3 chapters it feels more important, but once your crew grows, combat gets a dose of steroids. I did not think this game was going to look so colorful and full of action. I absolutely love this gem. Plus the cutscenes feel like I'm watching an anime in a way and some of the transitions from cutscenes to gameplay is just incredible. If you are a gamepass subscriber it's a no brainer but if not you can possibly try it out for a $1 right now thats how I'm currently playing it on pc, but I will eventually end up buying it on steam because I absolutely would love a sequel to this and want to support this game as much as possible.
its not hard to beat the game, however achieving hi ranks requires insane insane timing, also its definitely one of those games that should be played on hard, normal allows you to brute force wayy too much
@ashtondillard6906 so I say this as someone who usually gets into soulsborne games and who at the very least listens to music for hours a day. I suck lol I also don't understand how it gets it's averages for points lol it's so annoying seeing yourself getting A's and b's after every encounter then u get to the end and somehow you got a D lol
WTF, the cutscenes were the best part of an already amazing game. How can you say the plot is "fine"?? It's literally a journey backwards through videogame development, it's such smart satire. At the end of the say it is a simple story, but there's depth!
I downloaded this immediately after the developer direct, rhythm games are decently rare enough but a AAA rhythm hybrid game with a vibe like this and style meter? Sign me the h*ck up!
Such a charming game, grabbed me by its silliness and hooked me by the combat & gameplay loop. I think the tutorial fridge interactions are ace and the stage tutorials are necessary too.
Personally loved the cinematics and didnt think they were long at all, but i do agree the tutorials were a bit of a drag at the start, though they do have to make sure people get how the game works. All in all, all my problems are nitpicks at most. 9.6/10 Want more games like this, FUN, light hearted and cheerful, daring ideas and deviating from the industry norm. Indie games already do these but they lack the budget to do it to this level.
This game was such a breath of fresh air. I’ve seen a lot of cell shaded games, but this one pulls it of in such a beautiful, Saturday morning cartoon way. I find it to be quite funny as well and the shadow drop was just the Cherry on top.
I love the Evil Within throwback, the detective "SebAAA". Didn't realize it until second time I saw him. Pretty obvious, but just added to the great character.
