I built a 115 horsepower max all electric (EV) outboard from a Johnson outboard lower unit and Net Gain's HyPer9 HV IS electric motor. I used Tesla batteries and lengthened an aluminum boat I had made years earlier. I also used the battery management system (BMS) and electric charging controller (EVCC) from Thunderstruck Motors, as well as cables and fittings from EV West.
This video captures the entire process from start to finish, showcasing the build process, integration of Tesla batteries, and all details in between.

it blows my mind that there is only 6 comments. this is a fantastic idea, even the machined parts make sense since you're starting with off the shelf parts. the mounting plate is straight forward. using used EV battery packs, i would have made the same choice. this should be taken further into a production manner. or atleast offer the part machining as a service. customer sends theyre crankshaft seal, ev motor hub, and callouts for mounting plate etc. all this is a ton of work. they way you executed it makes it look easy.

Is this at Cap Sante Marina? If so, I'd love to come take a look at the boat!

I'm wondering if there isn't a near-future for a machine shop somewhere to offer these specific types of machining services to assist gas boat motor owners to convert over to electric. Also, I liked that you used some re-purposed Tesla power packs, but I'm wondering if you considered possibly going with a bank of LiFePos instead. They lack the extreme energy density, but their costs have started to nose dive into super cheap territory (12V 100AH for $150/sh). I envision sometime soon seeing more and more of these types of conversions, esp. given that we'll be able to eventually use solar to recharge with when that technology catches up to producing the type of output necessary. Great project video man, thanks!

Step One: Buy thousands of dollars worth of tools for machining metal. Step Two: Learn how to machine metal with the thousands of dollars worth of machining tools you purchased. Step Three: Obtain donor outboard motor Step Four: Obtain very expensive electric motor of suitable size (figure that out for yourself).. Step Five: Figure out, on your own, how to adapt electric motor to donor outboard motor housing and drive train and purchase all required materials. Step Six: Machine the adapters between the motor, the housing, and the drivetrain (figure that out for yourself) Step Seven: Obtain sufficient number of very expensive lithium batteries to produce the voltage required by electric motor and purchase all tools and materials to connect them together in a single battery pack (figure this out for yourself). Step Eight: Obtain or create your own motor control circuit and battery monitoring system (figure that out for yourself). Step Nine: Make all required modifications to the boat on which the modified outboard motor will be used (figure that out for yourself). Step Ten: Assemble all the pieces needed to complete the project and install on the boat (figure that out for yourself). Enjoy! Or, buy yourself an electric outboard motor in accordance with your needs and your budget from one of several various manufacturers and install it or have it installed. Enjoy! Thanks for the video!

I'm gonna go with you forgot about Step 11: Think of another fun DIY project using the skills/tools/experience you just gained, and having some more fun with it too! It's pretty clear that money wasn't issue for this guy so he totally could have just bought an off the shelf solution. Instead, he took the route of exploration and discovery, and apparently had a pretty good time of it. It's weird to me you took so much time writing a stupid, snarky comment like that.

Haha That’s what my wife feels. (The 10 step comment) That I enjoy making things and get a lot of satisfaction from it doesn’t quite make sense. My response that tools don’t cost money they make money, doesn’t seem to fly as much, now that I’m retired.

@@bobcoe4986 If a tool can allow you to do a repair yourself that would have cost you more than the tool to have someone else do the repair, the tool has helped you save money.
