At forty years of age, I discovered that I was intellectually gifted / high IQ during a supervised IQ test by Mensa, which changed a lot for me, also in unexpected ways. Here's my personal experience with intellectual giftedness. If you're Asperger, on the autism spectrum, ADHD, OCD, etc., you'll probably connect...

*Do you believe you're a good person? If so, then have you ever lied, stolen, cursed, committed adultery, or even murder? If the answer is YES, then you have sinned.* According to the Bible, sin is lawlessness. (1 John 3:4) In other words, you broke God’s law and you are His enemy. God’s enemies end up in Hell, which is a place where there is outer darkness, weeping and gnashing of teeth, and torment that goes on forever with no rest. (Matthew 25:30, Matthew 25:31-36, 2 Thessalonians 1:5-10, Revelation 14:11) Anybody that ends up in Hell will NOT have a second chance after the judgment. (Hebrews 9:27) *Does that concern you?* You might be thinking, “I haven’t murdered anyone or committed any of the bigger sins worthy of hell.” Well, let’s see about that. Did you know that having hatred towards someone like your own brother or sister makes you a murderer at heart? (Matthew 5:21-22 and 1 John 3:15) If you ever looked at a person that you are not married to with lust (sexual desire), then you have already committed adultery with them in your heart. (Matthew 5:27-28) If you have ever said, "Oh my God," or "Jesus Christ," to express frustration or annoyance, then you have used the Lord's name in vain and used it in place of a curse word. That is called “blasphemy.” You wouldn't use your loved one's name as a curse word, would you? By saying His name in place of a curse word, you have insulted your creator. He has given you life, eyes to see, ears to hear, and taste buds for food. *If you have committed ANY one of these sins, then you are destined to go to hell. Do you know what God did for guilty sinners, so that they wouldn’t end up in hell?* *We have all sinned. (Romans 3:23) So, God sent His Son, Jesus Christ, to die on the cross to bear our sins. He was buried in a tomb and rose on the third day. (1 Corinthians 15:1-4) He showed His love toward us by dying for us while we were still sinners (His enemies) so that He could redeem us. God's wrath is on those who remain in their sins and do not believe in His Son, Jesus Christ. We all deserve to be sent to hell. However, Jesus made a way for us to be free from our sins and now wants us to live a different life. If you TRULY BELIEVE in Jesus Christ and what He has done for you, then you must repent (turn away from your sins and forsake them), be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ (born again by water and Spirit), and live for Him with the help of His Holy Spirit, which will help you live a godly/holy life on this Earth. We live as saints (not sinners) to show our gratitude for the love He has shown to us by taking up the cross. We must have faith (believe/trust) in Jesus Christ, and by the grace of God, it will lead us to salvation. Also, FEAR GOD to stay away from evil and the things that would otherwise morally corrupt us, and continue to faithfully and obediently follow the Lord to the end (Hebrews 5:9)* "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction." (Proverbs 1:7) “Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven. Many will say to Me in that day, ‘Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in Your name, cast out demons in Your name, and done many wonders in Your name?’ And then I will declare to them, ‘I never knew you; depart from Me, you who practice lawlessness!’ ” (Matthew 7:21-23) "Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God." (1 Corinthians 6:9-10) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21) “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8) "Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake and the gospel’s will save it. For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, of him the Son of Man also will be ashamed when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.’ ” (Mark 8:34-38) "And he who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me." (Matthew 10:38) "Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit." (Acts 2:38) "What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin that grace may abound? Certainly not! How shall we who died to sin live any longer in it? Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life." (Romans 6:1-4) "For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God." (Romans 8:13-14) "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, “Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame. "For there is no distinction between Jew and Greek, for the same Lord over all is rich to all who call upon Him. For 'whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved.' " (Romans 10:9-13) "Nevertheless the solid foundation of God stands, having this seal: 'The Lord knows those who are His,' and, 'Let everyone who names the name of Christ depart from iniquity.' " (2 Timothy 2:19) "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age, looking for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ, who gave Himself for us, that He might redeem us from every lawless deed and purify for Himself His own special people, zealous for good works." (Titus 2:11-14) "For the love of Christ compels us, because we judge thus: that if One died for all, then all died; and He died for all, that those who live should live no longer for themselves, but for Him who died for them and rose again." (2 Corinthians 5:14-15) "But as He who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, because it is written, “Be holy, for I am holy.” And if you call on the Father, who without partiality judges according to each one’s work, conduct yourselves throughout the time of your stay here in fear." (1 Peter 1:15-17) “The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.” (2 Peter 3:9) *That was the Gospel message. Believe in the Gospel and obey the Lord Jesus Christ!*

I took IQ test with pyschologist and also while college and scored 154 and 149, respectively. I also have ADHD, both social and generalized anxiety, and extremely introverted. I am an overthinker and spend most of days going down rabbit holes on almost anything (can research on internet 10 hours a day). I don't feel "normal"; almost like I am trapped in my thoughts. I feel my IQ really just equates to having more common sense than most people and having the ability to logically resolve most issues. My grades were just average, I struggle to concentrate in classes and if not for acing exams , I would have failed college. While I make an upper middle wage income, I don't think having a high IQ really has benefitted me but maybe because of the ADHD and anxiety.

That sounds similar to my own experiences, except I can be both introvert and extroverted at times. I spend most of my free time reading online and RU-vid. I used to spend 8 hrs per day at the library (while not enrolled in school). I’ve only taken an online IQ test and scored a 127, which aren’t accurate. It has been suggested that I would likely score higher on the official IQ test that covers more abilities than the online version. I just finished a nursing program which was not a problem for me. Thanks for sharing.

(1 Corinthians 6:9-10) "Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God." (Galatians 5:19-21) “But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death.” (Revelation 21:8) "Whoever desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. So much of your experience resonates with me. I am trying now in my 30's now and have been reconciling and processing my experience growing up and my feelings about others. It is cathartic yet melancholy at once, isolating and empowering. I grew up knowing my IQ was high as a kid because I needed to take them as I am also dyslectic. I have always felt different than most but instead of thinking everyone was dumb, I have lived most my my life just thinking everyone was "faking it" to fit in. It's hard to describe because I thought ( and maybe it is) normal, but I think about things always from the "ground up". that is, when I understand a concept or arrive at an opinion on something, I cannot help but see its connections to other ideas, and can trace its validity down to lower level "first principals". When I speak to people I am often surprised by the things they do not track with me on, as they are often something thought where obvious and not the interesting part of what I was trying to convey. IDK all this sounds I fear like a kind of brag, it is difficult because you cannot talk about this stuff really. Yet It really is confusing and I am so curious about it.

Yeah I can totally relate to the idea of breaking things down to first principles. My ex said I would overanalyze, but the results of this "analysis" were immediate and automatic for me, whereas for her she would have had to think through them in a purposeful way. And yes, it usually boiled down to moral or logical inconsistencies that were impossible for me to ignore. I'm still not sure if this is beneficial or detrimental overall, but it certainly has created social challenges for me.

@@max-tp5ty That's my point exactly. You need a baseline intelligence. For example, someone with a severely impaired working memory simply can not temporarily retain and manipulate information for long enough or in a complex enough way to arrive at "wisdom". This of course is rare. Wisdom is a funny word. Means different things to different people. Part of it i would argue is good judgement, something people who are low functioning struggle with. I am reminded of a certain youtuber who for all intents and purposes groomed an intellectually impaired girl into running away from her family and starting a life with this individual. The courts (in Canada) found that this girl did not have the faculties to consent to this and was returned to her family. You should not feel any sense of responsibility over your friend's suicide. Extremely high intelligence is not just a gift, but also a burden. He would feel alienated from his peers, and have many frustrations and concerns that most others would not know about. The negative critical introspection of an intelligent mind, is capable of multiplying emotional issues very quickly, and drugs could have initially numbed him to his pain, but would ultimately exacerbate the problem. This problem is not of your doing and it is not something you could fix. It is next to impossible that you could say or do anything that would change his mind about his issues and make him believe and feel that his life was worth living.

I used to identify as an intellectual but I found it too socially isolating. I traded that life for a more gym/sport oriented life as well as chasing girls and smoking weed etc. and made social gains as a result which inevitably compromised my intellectual passions. It's a trade off which hasn't necessarily resulted in increased QoL as you gain the benefits of positive social interaction (reduced stress, wellbeing, enhanced sense of self worth) but lose the depth of intense passion for subjects, languages etc which bring a unique sense of personal satisfaction and achievement. I envy people who are mentally strong enough to withstand that social isolation without compromising their identity as an intellectual because in school or even at home with family members it can make you feel incredibly alone.

For many people, there is no mental strength involved in withstanding social isolation. It is just as completely natural/comfortable. It just depends on who you are. See, you’re not all that intelligent if you fall for the psychological pitfalls of society. Most of the stuff you ‘value’ in terms of social standing are just things that less intelligent people are conditioned to believe or need. Generally, if you’re more intelligent than other people, it’s almost impossible to ‘force yourself’ to socialize and pursue that life. Because you’re constantly contemplating the point of it all. Life itself already has no point and pursuing social endeavors is as far from self satisfaction as you can get. Because in order to be social, you actually have to give up part of yourself. People generally don’t care about you, they want to think and talk about themselves. Which is also exhausting to an intelligent person. Why would someone who contemplates the fact that time and space switch spots in a black hole care about social drama between Becky and Sue?

Yet, I seem to be the person struggling in life (I’m now almost 60), not allowed to keep long term employment while actually doing exceptional work, and never fitting in to social groups. Thank you for this highly personal testimony! I love the honest bluntness of it, especially because so many people can wrongly assume that there's arrogance or exaggeration behind this kind of account. As someone who also tested at 133, I can relate to so many things. The analogies portion of the GRE exam was very frustrating because I found plausible connections between multiple answers. Your "think dumb" response really speaks to that frustration and to feeling like I lack "commonsense." I'm also struck by others' confidence compared to my own hesitation. As an academic, I'm constantly surprised by how efficiently my peers breeze through tasks without worrying about the details of them. I'll peer review articles and spot endless errors and flaws that would cause delays if it were my work. I'll examine a PhD thesis and be the only one on the committee asking for revisions to mistakes that I thought were serious. Consequently, my own work gestates for far too long with perfectionism and it feels like the world marches by in confident mediocrity. I think wisdom is learning to develop compromise to better understand when details matter in the grand scheme. That's something I think gifted people might overlook earlier in life.

Abel, my friend, I could never relate more. I'm an Aspie with ADHD, I'm labelled as 2E (twice-exceptional in ability and weakness) in "giftedness" terms, and I struggle as much as I can probably achieve. People. People were the #1 source of problems in my life. I felt like everyone is different, but everyone kept hinting that I'm different hence I was fairly good at fitting in. My parents, teachers, and peers made things worse, despite some of them wanting to help while being completely unaware. I'm not even an adult yet and I'm already very isolated and prefer my own energy and free will in the already very limiting nature. I wanted to drop out of high school multiple times, and my grades are all over the place. Only actually studying the subjects at the very last hours. I found that I should perhaps give it a chance and try to take things on my own ways, to start to truly do and live well with this energy awaiting to be used at full and best. Our school system and a lot of schools (in the US) have a gifted or challenge class in which you are tested in the first grade and if your IQ is around 120-130 then you get put into that class. I had the opportunity to do so. And if you were wondering what we did in that class, well we would just do puzzles and we would read more difficult books. I remember dissecting a couple of more things than I did in regular classes. We would come up with solutions to hypothetical problems and talk about them. That is just a really really vague description but it will do I suppose.

As a fellow sufferer of this relatively uncommon condition I have always wondered why they refer to it as a gift, in my experience it is more of a curse. I’ve become somewhat of a dilettante and found it very difficult to function “normally”, every professor I had at University wanted to see me personally after reading the first paper I would submit and tell me if I only knuckled down I could pursue an academic career but I could never select a single field of study; I find most social interactions profoundly unfulfilling, have worked a wide variety of jobs without being able to discover a sense of vocation (the closest I came to a career was as a chef because it’s so challenging, but eventually the hours and outrageously low wages wore me down). Depression, isolation and a kind of listless drift have been the mainstays of my adult life, along with a constant, nagging sense of failure.

I think of most things about modern life in comparison to humans over millenia from diet to behaviour. Were not designed to be in the class room. I still exell in understanding new topics and spend most of my free time learning but I found my calling in life not purely thinking and achieving acedemic success but getting a fairly regular job as a renderer (throwing various types of mud and rock at walls) my understanding of the sciences along with being very physical have left me legues above the types who usually take up this trade and now I do very well in life and feel great satisfaction. I do have the strangest of hobby's as most would regard them to satisfy my hunger for understanding and knowledge. I get the depression thinking about how the world works and almost seeing into the future with certain personal and social situations that I feel powerless to effect. It's easy to wish ignorance. Maybe try something similar in aiming to what seems to be beneath you but obsessing and developing ideas in somthing more seen to be left to the average level thinker. That's how progress gets made when one person develops somthing simple further others follow the new knowledge developed and satisfaction is gained through making a difference and mark upon the world. I've developed new techniques and methods along with designing my own products pushing a whole industry forward without intending to. Something as simple as spreading mud on walls. I've never done it professionally buy aim for professional quality at home and cooking for friends. . It takes either an artist or a great understanding of sciences, maths ect to be at the top of the game. That could be your calling if you were pulled to it. Try aim at a small scale business rather than a busy kitchen where you could have influence over menus and dishes in time, it wouldn't take much to be able to do the same your self and be your own boss in a small establishment bringing some much needed confidence and moral boost feeling valued in your own small part of society. It doesn't take much to go from feeling worthless to feeling you were here for a reason. I don't mean t get all profound and trying to dish out too much advice to a stranger, but oak treas grow from tiny acorns and sometimes your best off jamming that star shaped peg in the circle hole. It's stronger and still touches in all the right places leaving all those nice gaps for other things in life that bring joy.

I've never done an intelligence test, so I don't know if I'm smart or that I just think I'm smart. Anyway, after doing some intellectual jobs, I decided to get a simple job, work as less as possible (because I've never found a job I'm passionate about) and use the left-over time to figure out how I can renovate my house and survive on as little as possible. That... made me a happier person, because I can use my brain to find solutions and then put them in practice. I like the thinking part more than the acting part, but I decided that it's part of the deal. Nothing has to be perfect either, just enough to give me a sense of 'having done the best I could'. Not preaching the off-grid evangelical, but it definitely gave me a sense of calmness. I hope you find a way to feel fulfillment as well!!!

Grades are more a result of hardwork than an expression of intellect. Not even exaggerating.. I did maybe 3 homework assignments in high school. I did well on the exams, did very well on the SAT, and got into a good university. I failed out of uni because I was extremely lazy and not prepared to exert effort. I became very depressed, socially isolated because I just didn't "click" with many people, and this resulted in a bad period. I discovered mindfulness and meditation and my life changed. I started to make an effort to be a "good person": a positive influence on society. I am a 3rd year biochemistry student at uni. I have a 4.0, consistently scoring the highest grades in my classes. My intelligence helps me understand what I am studying but passion, willpower, and determination, ultimately, is the reason why I am doing so well. I also workout nearly everyday, try my best to eat healthy, and meditate nearly every morning. Depression sucks, but you have to realize, being happy is NOT EASY, you have to work for it, sludge through the depression by walking outside, meditating, eating healthy, USING YOUR PHONE LESS, cutting back on bad habits, and LISTENING TO THAT "GOOD" VOICE INSIDE YOUR HEAD. When you have the motivation, you can do anything you set your mind to, regardless of how smart you are. People don't realize, MOTIVATION DOES NOT COME MAGICALLY, YOU NEED TO WORK FOR IT.

I agree with a lot of your points and it’s good content. I’m glad to see you had a character arc and didn’t let an accredited institutionalized higher intelligence level make you arrogant. Some think they have to “dumb things down” or feign intelligence around others but you never know who could also be equally as intelligent but have 0 interest in engaging in deep philosophical discussions or complex systems based thinking. Pseudo intellectuals fall prey to this all the time and get a false sense of superiority. They become confused because people they engage with aren’t interested in discussing stoicism or some loose concept of metaphysics and would rather they just shut up so they can just watch the game or share stories of their personal life (more atypical of regular human interaction). Whether the frustrated person actually does have a high IQ or just has average intelligence but thinks their interest in “smart” subject matter makes them intelligent, they believe the uninterested person must be of inferior intelligence which is a false assumption. In other words, many intelligent people enjoy simplicity and “dumb” discussion and it has 0 reflection on their actual intelligence level. Easy conversation and engagements can be pleasant especially for those in professions that require making tough decisions and solving complex challenges on a day to day basis. Nothing more annoying than commenting on how lovely the weather is today and someone pointing out a mathematical breakdown on the temperature fluctuations, the physics of the wind blowing, and the density of gases in the Ozone layer. A smart person eventually learns just saying “Yep, perfect hiking weather” is a perfectly acceptable answer.

I love your view!!! It's the perfect way of 'getting out of your brain' and start to feel the people around you. I found it also the perfect way of listening to people and every now and then using that same powerful brain to give them a (possible) solution or a different view. Not in a way of 'I'm smarter than you', but more like a 'here's a side-note'. It made me a lot happier in life and it made half of my problems go away. Being smart can be a gift, but you might have to get out of that head to actually do something with it. I think it's very difficult to do, because it's very addicitve to dabble in the brain energy. It probably only works when you enter the boredom territory and after that... possibly enter in the fascinating world of 'human interactions'. Scary stuff, if you're used to rationalizing everything.

Thanks for this extremely honest and detailed video! I understand your feelings of difference and superiority, as well as your feeling of inferiority you talked about. I think the natural reaction to such feelings is to put them away or at least hide them, thinking "I can't be better than other people", or "I'm not that special". Great breakdown, I believe the strong/deep emotions which we experience are derived from a fuller understanding of events. Personally, I find music to be a great representation of the depth which I am able to translate within myself. It allows me to feel the exact emotions which are being conveyed, I like to think of it as a superpower.

I also have a pretty high iq, and did well in school despite family chaos and going to more schools than I can remember. I've been struggling recently to acknowledge and accept my ability to learn and my differences there without it going straight to my ego. I've actually been 'playing dumb' to get along as to avoid that conflict. All that is to say, I love your framing of the differences between people and the use of the term intellectual giftedness. @@Abel.Abelson I just watched it, and my right hand 2D:4D ratio is 0.97-0.98 roughly. I'm not familiar enough with the research to draw any conclusions from that in high vs. low ratio. I do test poorly, though that is largely due to my issues with focus (unable to study ahead of time), combined with the "explosion of possibilities". It also happens in conversation, if there's a problem or unfamiliar term my mind will latch on and try to untangle it causing me to miss out on what the person has said. For your own interest, my IQ is somewhere between 125 and 150. Almost as though I've got a varying "focus coefficient" attached to it.

I'm Kenyan & I took the online Mensa Norway test and scored a 131 . I really find my self stupid on certain occasions and extremely clumpsy with small things. So this result kinda took me by surprise on first glance . Then I remembered that I never used to struggle academically in primary school and was sort of curious and enthusiastic of certain fields of science. So I guess I drew the results from that . When I reached Highschool my mind became really hyper and at times I used to be lost in imagination and contemplation various concepts & ideas . I can also say that I got bored with school and I didn't do that well in my KSCE ( this are national exams one does at the end of highschool before joining university, kinda like SAT tests.) My ksce score got me humbled so much and at the same it kinda made see myself as more stupid than I already did . I'm working to get rid of this mindset but i'm not sure if I should because I find viewing oneself as more intelligent can ,in some sense ,make them arrogant. It's great that I can relate to a good number of things in this video.

That's how I felt for a good period of time until I started reaching out to others in similar communities. Communities like tech, science, and creative arts (everyone wants to be an artist but I'm talking about musicians, etc. that are good enough to actually make money out of it) tend to have a higher abundance of others with a high IQ. I actually met my wife because we were both doing creative arts for a living at the time. I've since moved on to I.T. because I love it and it makes a better living but that's what prompted us to get to know each other. It's the basic notion of finding out what you're interested in, then finding others in the same subject.

You can also use your intelligence to learn social cues and develop better emotional intelligence. One big issue with us high IQ people is that we just specialize in one kind of knowledge. Thank you. I grew up in hell, but with a very high IQ. My grades were borderline, as I had figured out how to pass without doing homework. My test scores were always in the top 1%. Like you, my understanding of people is deep. I took an IQ test while I was in a shelter for runaway youth and scored it's highest testable range. I was stunned because I thought if I were smart, I would not be in the situation I was in. I had not fully understood the damage that had been done to me from severe abuse, nor did I know the level of mental illness I suffered as a result.

If it makes you feel a little better I'm more or less in the same boat. Perhaps not as abused. Grew up in a broken household, surrounded by drunks, father shot through, mother hooked up with a neighbor who was more of a drunk. Always hungry, I would get new clothes when my pants were 15-20cm over my socks and skin tight. But in school, yeah I didn't try because I knew my parents had no money for university. I would be perpetually third and never study for anything. 1 & 2 both had tutors and studied hard. Both ended up as doctors. But... I did ok. I taught myself to program when I was 12. How the hell did I get a computer at 12 in such an environment? I delivered milk every day for 2 years and refused to 'loan' to my parents. Why computers. I found my inspiration. A movie called 'Wargames'. I kept learning. Taught the y12 computer class... but knew, No Uni for me. Applied for private education and tried to pay it off by working at McDonalds. That didn't work. Taught myself Visual Basic and got a job. In 2 years I doubled my income, in 3 years tripled with industrial certification. Today, I'm at the top of my field. A CIO balked at hiring me at one point because I'm paid more than him. He put me on a 2 year contract... and paid me even higher. These days I do Cybersecurity and Legislative Compliance Consulting for the IT space, mostly banking. These days I have multiple properties, including a retirement rural estate. My son boards overseas following his dream of being a pro hockey player. Nice cars, nice safe suburb, private schooling all the way for the kids. I'm sitting here programming my own computer game, enjoying life doing what I like. This is not a showing off post... the post is entirely for you because I thought I "can't" when I was young, until one day I realized that other people I was competing against had no drive and no ability and kind of just hoped for the best and leaned heavily on social connection to muddle through.. I had a goal, a dream the whole time. I was relentless and eventually I started planning ahead. Now, many years later I realized that the 'hard start' I had made me very independent, very self sufficient and it bolstered me against most of life's weaknesses. I have never smoked, drink maybe once a year, never taken drugs. I reject and resent almost everything about my childhood and that made me stronger, more focused and a better competitor in the world. I never forgave. I never forgot. Growing up hard, makes you hard in response. You may find it's a tool as valuable as anything else you have rather than a weakness.

@@nathanielacton3768 yeah, things worked out well for me after all, I guess I should've said so. I actually dropped out of high school and took my equivalency exam. I own a restaurant and just started buying rental property. More interestingly, I really don't read as much, used to be a constant. I always had a book or two. I started to question why was I accumulating knowledge, was it an escape....probably. I'm curious, but only occasionally these days and I think about what the buddhists say about intellect, beyond practicalities, being yet another distraction from peace of mind. As for my abuser, I guess I have mostly forgiven. I had a great time raising my daughters and it was not hard to treat them with basic dignity, it was actually a delight to do so. As another person who’s been called ‘gifted,’ I really relate to what you said. There was a time in my childhood that I tried to dumb myself down in an attempt to gain social capital. It really just ended up making me look like the class clown, which didn’t help anyone relate to me. It caused me to fall behind and develop unhealthy responses to work and stressors, which are becoming much more prominent now that I’m further along in my education. For any other ‘giftees’ reading this, don’t do what I did. Being yourself is the only satisfying way to be. Also, educate yourself about Asperger’s, OCPD, and ADHD. They’re extremely under diagnosed and I would hesitate a guess that at least half of the gifted kids at my school were on the Asperger’s spectrum. were the conditions before more enjoyable and now more threatening? did you have more confidence because of competent conditions which result you can repeat right now? If so, the results would be better or worse? If has to do with information, it’s normal to forget. If it has to di with age, it’s normal for gifted children to have stuff that is too easy (and a lot of classmates that perform less than they are expected by the government, criteria that is low fir gifted people). The Dunning-Kruger effect can happen in any decil, because competence and confidence (whether low or high) its there. Maybe you noticed flaws you didn’t see before, but that is part of your personal journey. Do you have a project more complex that you had before? that is also part of you getting more developed: the thing is that you didn’t have to put the same effort as the other people under a far less chaotic environment, in which you are a possibility that is not being helped as it should, because gifted children are also special needs

Many of us perceive reality as if looking through magnifying goggles, accentuating its larger details. This shared perspective enables us to recall events of our lives with exceptional clarity. When we share these vivid recollections, we often encounter skepticism from others. They might mistakenly think we are exaggerating or fabricating, which can lead us to wonder if they are mocking us. However, we understand that their disbelief is not mockery but a reflection of their own differing experiences and perceptions of reality.

Glad the video was helpful :) You know, once you really get to understand them, these neurotypicals do have their reasons and logic and after all a quite complex and dense social interaction, simply not in the manner we have. Knowing what makes them tick helps a lot in sharing the same planet (and often room) with them. You should definitely check out my books, I'm sure you'll find a high degree of recognition there, and also quite some info that will add new angles to your reflections: amzn.to/3paQsmz .

I thought the supposed "online mensa iq test" wasn't a legitimate test and I didn't find that out until after I took it and got 142 on it and attempted to find a way to get into mensa but of course you can't if it isn't a legitimate test.

I noticed this too. But I learned how to talk and participate to a much better point then barely getting by after awhile. If you stop thinking and get used to responding and reacting with no thought then life communicating with them is a lot easier. Yea, socializing is hopelessly complicated but I think for them it is mostly an automated process. Most of it I think is learned behavior that they practice emulating but wouldn't be able to describe themselves.

Interesting to see someone else's perspective. I got maximum in international Mensa IQ test which was sort of included in one of the university courses i took, but never did the other one to determine how higher do I get, cause I don't see a point in doing that, but I'm at least 99.865 percentile. It's fascinating how in some things, like being interested in fundamentals and elementary basics of all phenomenon or for ex. overwhelming consideration of all possibilities to everything, most people with high IQ completely relate. But then other things are just a matter of perspective which gives me a deeper understanding of what the IQ actually measures. For example I don't have many autistic traits like you, but the trend for most of the "gifted" people aligns more with having those traits then not. It is difficult in this field to be certain about some of the correlations, even when IQ is the most researched metric in this field. If I were you tho, I'd think about your perspective on comparison with other people and with looking at the problems with what you describe as "thinking dumb". Your phrasing suggest some issues with your ego. Simplest solutions are the most desired - its not thinking dumber, its thinking in most correct way corresponding to the problem presented. And you definitely don't even need to notice anyone's IQ in any situation and rather consider their other qualities to whatever you're trying to have in them - like kindness, loyalty or honesty in friends, etc. It's easy to find a place with people where you can ventile your needs with more of a high level thinking and conversations - let that be jobs, academic grounds, etc. But you should learn to not require all of aspects in your life to be like that, that's foolish.

My IQ has been measured at 141. I am able to grasp things very, very quickly. When learning something new it almost seems that I'm _remembering_ it rather than learning it. What is strange though is that if I don't use what I've learned I forget it really quickly. In social situations I basically imitate what others do around me, I'm not great at fitting in. I'm irritated by and awed by other people. My hobby is thinking, one of my greatest pleasures in life is to lie awake at night for hours on end just thinking. I can never get to sleep quickly, it always takes me a minimum of an hour no nod off. I share your love of Star Trek. I don't watch many TV programs, but Star Trek and Sherlock Holmes are my absolute favourites. I love reading, Sci-Fi and Fantasy ara amongst my favourites. I really hate loud noises. I love quiet. I'm a really good programmer - that's what I do for a living. I'm ashamed to say that I'm really enjoying not having to interact physically with people during lockdown. I'm dreading all of the hugs that people are threatening to inflict on eachother when/if this pandemic comes to an end.

Hey Michael, I enjoy the lockdown too, for the most part, and I'm not ashamed to say or think or feel so. I'm not hurting anyone in being an introvert and enjoying peace and calm (and the more environmentally friendly lifestyles of other people, be it unwanted). I used to imitate a lot too, but I found out it isn't necessary. They actually don't give a hoot about you, as long as you don't get in their way. And if you get in their way, and "own" your point or stance, they'll even respect it, and it's not a problem either. So you can actually be yourself to a large degree, they don't care. The only thing you have to do, is not overexpose yourself. Their screaming indifference is your safe haven. I know it sounds like publicity, but you might be interested in my latest book "How to handle neurotypicals" bit.ly/neurotp. It's a lifetime of learning in a condensed format, it's meant to be informative, and "connect" between neurodivergents at the same time.

Hello Abel! thank you for making this video, it's pleasant to know that people such as us are not alone, in my personal experience of being "intelligent", i found that it had a lot to do with empathy, being able to put myself in the shoes of something outside of me and understand perspectives of said thing without necessarily judging it before hand, there was a certain interconnectedness i felt when it came to me and my surroundings, and things that were obvious to me were unfortunately not so clear to those around me, people seemed to lack the sensation of being united with their environment, the sensation of being aware enough to notice the tiny little factors in behavioral quirks that essentially give light to modern day issues. I've always felt very deeply, that intelligence and unity are deeply connected, and that when it comes to an intelligent person, they never discount anything by the automatic process of faith or belief, but remain eternally open minded to the plausibility that said thing could be used to gain a deeper understanding of a core pattern within a particular concept or category or field of understanding. So for example, an intelligent person wouldn't be so quick to dismiss God and become an atheist, nor would an intelligent person be so quick to dismiss atheism, but would look to balance two sides of the coin and find the repetitive pattern inside of the two polarities to basically click all the neural networks together. This is most definitely how i have experienced being unlike others, and this tends to be how my brain works, i enjoy looking at polarities and finding the thing that holds the polarity together, and then classifying that into an easy to understand essay or term. In that in relation to your life is visible when you noticed your polarity as an individual is very different to others, and that there is clearly a sensation of difference that has to be understood, and you essentially went out of your way to classify that different which would be where i would be interested indeed in reading your book to understand your discoveries in this experience. It's also wonderful to see you have a RU-vid channel and you are ever yet sharing your experiences. I feel like how society views intelligence is quite warped, i never done well in school at all, i got incredibly average grades because i lacked the drive to be at all interested in school, i didn't care about it and at the time, games and connecting with friends through those games was thoroughly more entertaining, yet it seems society is hell bent on the idea that if someone gets incredible grades in school and outperforms their peers, that classifies them as someone who is intelligent, but then those very same people lack the empathy to actually understand the world. It makes me question whether these people are actually intelligent as i see it because their behaviors hardly reflect their ability to perform academically. Overall, i've always felt as though the way school measures intelligence is incredibly out-dated, these people who are supposedly intelligent i find are people who have incredibly logical minds and the ability to processes things very quickly, but efficiency of mind doesn't necessarily mean that the quality of said mind is at all refined or pure in nature. When i look at you i see the meek humbleness as well as the innate prowess that reminds me of myself, and i feel warm inside to know that once again, people like us actually are not alone. I feel through the manifestation of embarrassment, and desire for social approval, that people like us are limited in our ability to express ourselves, and so we end up being very low-key or "out there", but here you are putting yourself "out there" for the world to see. So thank you, going to listen to more of your videos!

Couldn't agree more! If I hadn't been under the emotional pressure I was (bad parenting to put it short) I definitely would have been an average student too. Tried to buy love through performance (spoiler alert: doesn't work :) ). Yes, intelligence is definitely confounded with long-term encyclopedic memory and "robotic" proficiency in rule-based systems (like maths). Zero understanding necessary or even desired in order to be considered "smart", very annoying. Hey, I would be very interested to know what 2D:4D ratio you have (according to certain hypotheses this is linked to prenatal testosterone, which again is linked to how your brain developed and functions). It's like a personal research of mine :). If you want to participate, have a look at this video of mine and let me know me what your digit ratio is... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OmbEaBfzKFk.html Only if you feel like it of course.

I have a high IQ, and went through some of the same things as as you did when I was a child. I couldn’t understand how some people were so mean and aggressive, and developed a fear of people based on the interactions with some very aggressive children and adults. The way most people thought was strange to me, especially how a state of emotion would lead to thoughts and subsequently beliefs, then actions in people. I’m glad to be older and understand that I’m just different than most, and as such I’ve had a different life experience than them.

This is a great video, it resonates strongly with experiences I had growing up in a deprived Caribbean community in Northern England. I had a lot of self esteem and self confidence issues for most of my young life. I was seen as different not just from the usual ethnic minority life experience perspective, but amongst peers in my own community. I didn’t understand how they were able to excel socially and be so self assured from a young age, yet at the same time they had no passion for learning, enquiry and discovery like I had, and with a burning passion. So in that sense I didn’t have a high regard for these ignorant and shallow minded kids. However, I was torn with wanting to fit in, and to be at least accepted as a social equal which I valued and regarded them highly for that attribute at least. That social ambition only became stronger as I could not stand how schools taught subjects and treated their main subjects, the pupils. The 1970s and most of the 1980s were hell as far as my education was concerned. The scant attention and faint concern shown by teachers to the educational progress and attainment of black kids in that era was so common it was the norm, looking back it’s very clear there was a scandalous agenda at play, but thats another issue that I won’t comment on anymore here. That aside, I had a particular gripe about teachers not deriving equations, formulae from first principles. I secretly yearned for learning fully from first principles, otherwise I was not interested. I became totally bored and confused with the point of school and overall I performed as poorly as my idle social animal peers by the end of my school years. I somehow managed to earn a science and engineering degree after a long and unconventional path through academia. Then still found myself struggling to get my career started as my self confidence issues still waxed and waned unrelentingly. One day I read about MENSA in the waiting room of a dental surgery in the early 1990s so I did a pretest and was invited to test with MENSA at a centre in the city, and I scored 136. I was not impressed, in fact I felt wounded and embarrassed that I had not been accepted by MENSA. I hid the test result in my drawer for years and never told or shared that information with anybody. One day I tore up the little post card sized certificate in a fit of rage. Now 30 years later I look back with some regret at that incident and wish I had the benefit of maturity and hindsight. It would’ve prevent the destruction of what was a record of not only a highly respectable measure of intelligence, but evidence of a what a very confused mind and unhappy soul could still attain when the chips are down. I now feel quite proud that I did the test and scored well enough to confirm that I was not as useless and weird as some thought I was whilst growing up in a tough and uncompromising community within a community. It’s a pity that I never had the wisdom and maturity to take a look at the whole picture and take the positives as well as the negatives into consideration at that point in time. At the end of the day I learned that time eventually heals and furnishes your perspective with deeper insights that helps you unravel the confused thoughts and conflicting relationships you once had with many people to arrive at sensible answers and a satisfying conclusion.

@@markryder1805 Maybe it wasn’t the Binet scale? I remember receiving a small brown postcard type certificate and a letter telling me that I scored 136 and was in top 1% percentile or whatever and that I didn’t make the grade which I believe was 140-145 or something like that. This was 1993, something may have changed in the U.K. arm of MENSA over that time period. I remember the score I got like it was yesterday, I nearly ripped up the damn thing on the spot. Too bad I carried out the threat some years later in a fit of pique whilst routinely sifting through some Tax documents in a drawer. NOTE TO SELF: Tax affairs are a serious fire hazard on the best of days, keep well away from other sensitive and highly flammable documents 😂

I have an IQ of 137-142, unsure of exact number now. I am finishing medical school soon and starting training in psychiatry. I prefer to spend most of my free time alone. I know a tremendous amount about my hobbies and am easily bored with people who don't know a lot about at least something. I have also had troubles in the past, like social phobia/anxiety and severe alcohol and drug addiction when a teenager, but I have been recovered from the latter for 10 years. My life struggle is the difficulty in communicating my complicated philosophies and knowledge systems to others--for me, they are like instantaneous visions, if that makes any sense, and verbalizing these takes a lot of words. Sometimes I must resort to telling people, "I'm right about this. Just trust me." And my other difficulty is that my way of viewing the world and making decisions is based on a mental catalog of thousands of research papers and books I've read, and it is frustrating to relate to people who just make choices out of transient feelings at a given moment in time, almost at random.

Meh dude, my recommendation, get over yourself. Open a advance calculus textbook and try to solve some of the harder question by heart in a quick manner. Or open a textbook in advance medicine and ask yourself, how much of the diseases and symptoms etc can you actually recognize that is beyond the average medical student? If your answer is, yes I can do advance calculus with easy from heart on a white piece of paper, or even in my head, or I can recognice several medical symptoms and add them up and put a correct diagnosis on rare diseases outside of the basic textbooks you learn in class, yea then you might be on to something. Otherwise, again give it a rest and actually do your best in your field instead of bragging about some arbitrary average score of 135-140 lol

@@snyggmikael You can always start your own organization for intellectually gifted people and select members on the basis of calculus textbooks and recognition of diseases in medical textbooks. Might be jolly good fun, why not. The rest of the world will probably continue to use standardized IQ-tests though. And BTW, mentioning your IQ, especially in a comment on a video about intellectual giftedness, is not bragging, it's simply a relevant piece of information.

Its weird if you know the advanced like machinery or systems and mechanics of a concept and how to apply it in a functional way like on all levels, socially, personally or in careers and people dont get it while this is how it works efficiently. I also dont get why people dont value this and why theyre being so dysfunctional. I dont mean to sound mean but thats literally exactly what it looks like. I had my IQ discovered for me in 3rd grade with the Iowa Basics Testing that is the norm here in the USA. I was tested again by the same IB Testing in 5th grade… both times they sent a specialist to my school to have meetings with my parents. I identify with many of the examples you brought up.
