High mains voltage.

Usually the UPS output voltage is the same as the input unless it's running off the batteries (obviously) but if the input gets too high it gets reduced automatically which is a handy feature.
The same goes if the input voltage gets too low, it will boost it up to normal levels.
In the UK, the declared voltage and tolerance for an electricity supply is 230 volts -6%, +10%. This gives an allowed voltage range of 216.2 volts to 253.0 volts.

Normally, universal voltage devices have a maximum voltage of 250V, so wouldn't this cause them to burn out or reduce their duration? I don't really know if there is much advantage in using 240V instead of 230 or 220

It certainly can't be good for them. It's a good thing were are not still using incandescent lamps as I doubt they would last very long lol.

don't know about the uk but here in the us most devices can tolerate 125 volts fine. It's them damn induction motors/ac compressors that burn out quickly. I have seen 127 at my house a few times. I just turn off certain things that I know will burn up. I havent noticed my av reciever getting hot during them scenairos so I will assume the transformer in it is slightly over built.@victormondain3001

250 Volts always seemed like a scam to me. Power company increases voltage to increase profit. Your incandescent lights will be brighter and use more power and burn out faster too. Your kettle and oven will warm up faster but will not use more power.

It seems to be common thing now. Ive had it at 260 on job i done last year. The fastest ive seen the dno move 😂

I'll have to start logging the mains voltage as years ago when we all used incandescent lamps, you could visibly see the tap changer at the substation working in the evening! I bet they are being cheap nowadays because everybody is using CFL and LED which don't give a shit about voltage rise!

@@FrontSideBus I’ve always wondered what that random flash is occasionally with incandescent lamps! I still use incandescent lamps or CFLs in places where they’ll be on for long periods and I’ve only noticed it on the incandescent lamps, interesting!

The APC buck/boost is a handy indeed. I miss the pop-up alert the older PowerChute software used to show when an event occurred, however hearing its relay or contactor click is usually enough for me to check its status page. Back in November we had a few days where our mains voltage fluctuated widely enough for the UPS to keep waking me up with all its clicking, the voltage varied from about 180v to 257v. We then got a letter from ESB Networks about a power interruption for maintenance and after that our voltage has been stable again mainly around 230v to 240v.

On the opposite end is my dads house which usually is about 210 😂. Highest it’s been is 229 lmao

Lol must be really far away from the transformer? I wonder what it would drop to with a 10kw shower on the go lol.

@@TheCORC964 Yeah being out in the cuds can be problematic. I've seen farms where they need to fire up big diesel gensets when they want to use big grain driers ect because their supply is so limited!

But it's within tolerance?

Technically, yes. 253 is the max permitted.

You can usually access the ups via usb but older ups need java i believe, some have network port or you can add the module to it and access the Web page for the ups, you can ajust the high and low warning, you can access all the built in logs as well that's stored on the apc ups (regardless if it was usb only or network) Unsure what was happening in my area for a bit, it would go from 50hz to 51 or 49 (was long time ago so can't remember witch way) had a psu that really didn't like that and would start buzzing at around 1-2am (I asusme 00:30 as that's when my area economy 7 starts and ends at 7:30am)

@@leexgx Heh no worries. I've started using a network management card instead of the usb port since this video, so I can monitor it with my iPad on my home network when the PC is off. I have the phone base station, broadband router and network switch ect hanging off it too.

@@FrontSideBus if your using the network for ups shutdown instead of usb you Make sure the network hub or/and router is also ups powered as well (sometimes people forget you still need network when using network ups monitoring)

I'd be doing a fault loop on your mains, you could have a dodgy connection in the street if it only happens in the evenings (say when everyone is cooking dinner).

Usually hovers around 248v during the day.

What you can do? Lower it, obviously. You are not in the Middle Ages, when they had no idea of converting voltages.
