For decades it has been the ultimate middle class aspiration - that kids crack IIT - because that means unlocking social / economic and even marital happiness. However of late - the entire dynamics of IIT and the opportunities that it unlocks - has been changing. In this deep dive we take a look at how much IIT graduates are being offered (besides the few crore plus offers) and why are pure science IIT graduates finding themselves without a job at the end of the placement season.

Making an episode about an Institute that you respect is not easy - tried to stick to hard data - that shows a worrying trend. Really touched with so many IIT alumni reaching out that sharing their story and the fact that too much is expected out of a IIT Graduate. Hope this episode helps in a little way. Though not many - did manage to draw a few smart comments that enquired about my educational qualifications ... not that it matters - but here goes:))))) Schooling - La Martiniere College Graduation - Hindu College Masters - St.Stephens MSc - Got admission into Boston University (but dad didn't have 40+ lakh to spare:))) Had the privilege of studying in the best school / colleges of India - But had to work my butt off in the media sector - no godfather - no alumni support - just kept up-skilling and learning on the job.

nah the problem is even after they are from IITs they take irrelevant courses like Metallurgical Engg, Material Engg, Ocean Engg, etc and stay jobless, they should choose CSE, ECE, Civil and other popular courses that are relevant in Job market. Although I'm a BCA passout from a Tier-3 college currently working, I'm lucky I didn't waste my time taking stupid courses.

I'm not from IIT, (ECE from Tier 3 College). But right from the beginning, I was interested in Software Development. I did lot of courses in the same, did projects, increased my rating in Competitive Programming. Finally grabbed International Offer!! With my experience, I can confidently say that, in the present world, you don't need an IIT degree to be successful. "IIT degree" acts as a catalyst for your success but absence of it doesn't make you a failure. Just focus on your skills, be a top player of the game. Your college, your degree, your grades, your branch doesn't matter. The journey is tough but sure is worth rewarding.

As a fellow IIT graduate with a specialization in Mechanical Systems, I can totally relate to the dilemma of whether or not IITs are still worth it. After clearing GATE 2019, I had high hopes of doing excellent research and finding a job where my skills would be valued. However, after two years of hard work and a CGPA of 9.5/10, during the placement, I was offered a position of graduate trainee with a package of 10 lakh per annum. Although this was the highest pay for many of my batchmates who wanted to continue in the core sector, I ended up rejecting the job offer and pursuing my PhD in artificial intelligence and renewable energy in France. I must say, it has been a way more rewarding experience than I ever imagined. So, to answer the question "Are IITs still worth it?", it totally depends on your aspirations and the path you want to take.

IITans are successful not because of IIT, but because the students who go there are genuinely hardworking and consistent students. These qualities also help them in life ahead. People, companies know this fact hence they try to give these students the opportunities they deserve. Hence the hard working nature and consistency of the student gives them success not IIT entirely.

An IITian here. The content of this video is absolutely true. No doubt that IITs do office some security in terms of job, salary, quality education and networking. However the amount of pressure that students go through during preparation is not worth all that. I appeared for IIT-JEE for the first time in 2015, but couldn't clear it. I was so much depressed. My world turned upside down. I used to cry at nights. However I gathered courage and started preparing again and luckily cracked JEE in 2016. God knows what I would have done if I didn't clear JEE in 2016 either. Now when I look back I feel that I was depressed for no reason. Most of my colleagues and seniors in my company are non-IITians. And they are also as intelligent as I am (or probably more 😅). They are earning at par with me. If you are a JEE aspirant, do remember that going to an IIT is great but not at the cost of your happiness and mental health.

Same goes for IIM s. You have to skill yourself and learn techniques, do courses which will not necessarily be taught in class. After that too final placement is random, that is, not everyone gets the desired packages and good companies even after hard work.

I was PhD fellow in mathematics in NIT Durgapur and i saw people after Mtech doing PhD in their disciplines. I asked couple of engineering students why are doing PhD after Mtech, why don't do job ? Their answers were "companies are offering 20k salary per month, it is better to join PhD where you get monthly 31k fellowship better than 20k job". Darun bolecho Abhishek da. Being an IIT grad I can relate to this absolutely. But this is not just for IITs but for very good universities as well. People have a conception that if someone is studying in a reputed institute he will get everything automatically. However, people fail to see 70-80% students struggle to get through such phases. It is humiliating. And the present fintech and IT sector totally outshines all other sectors which also makes it very clear how our traditional sectors are lacking and soon with automation there won't be any high paying jobs, that's why if you see diploma college placement data in some areas they are doing better as Indian industries needs labours at cheap price, they don't need specialists. They are outsourcing it anyway.

I thought that since it was such a prestigious university in Kolkata the course for Mtech in CSE would also be very good. But after joining I came to know that it was very outdated, and the main focus of the entire course was on the theoritcal subjects and the teaching method of most of the faculty were below par. After continuing for a semester I decided to drop off. Even the de-registration process was very challenging as most of the task was to be performed offline. Nothing happens online there.

Being an IITian , I can say that most of the people who don't get jobs are the once who don't sit for placements and opt for higher studies. Also many students don't score bare minimum cgpa for sitting for placements. So yes , competition is even more after going into an IIT too , because everyone has come after cracking one of the worlds toughest exams. It doesn't makes sense saying if you get IIT you will be successsfull. You need to grind even more , and that is a fact.

I never got placed when I completed my Master's in IIT Madras, which even led to me being suicidal. It has taken at least 1.5 years of therapy to recover from that. Eventually, I shifted away from Civil Engineering because of low job demand. I re-skilled myself as a software developer (I was able to do that because of my privilege to some extent), to get a good job and even now I am underpaid, despite highly specialized nature of my job (requires competency in engineering, computer science and Math). I still wish I should have gone to Europe or USA or Canada. No wonder India has so much brain drain. We simply don't have respect for highly skilled employees, especially, but not limited to, ones from engineering background. I love engineering a lot and I think a lot of students too, but struggle for getting admission and then failing to get a job really hurts the morale of students. No wonder India has so many suicide attempts among students. EDIT: Also, there is a fundamental issue of not many entrepreneurs rising in India, for the simple reason that our education stifles the creativity of student. I think the reasons are far too deep than represented in the video. India simply does not know how to use the vast range of talents present among the students. For example, I always wanted to work in space agency, specifically to develop computational tools. However, I cannot do that in ISRO because first, they don't take experienced engineers (because they want to take only through an exam, which apparently our govt thinks is more fair and there is also an age limit) and second, the kind of work I have to do in ISRO is decided by my specialization and not my interests (because governments have decided a career path according to specialization without any flexibility). This further stifles creativity of people. That is the reason our research institutes don't contribute too much in any sector and research is generally stagnant, because there is no value to the new ideas and no funding for ideas. Because there is no funding, no ideas are executed and no new companies are created and hence, not a whole lot of jobs. Indian industries depend a lot of international products/companies because we simply don't have funding to fund ideas of our own. For example, the almost entire IT industry depends on international contracts to earn money, very, very few companies have products of their own. One I know of is Byju's, which provides a service of very dubious utility to it's customers, in my opinion. We hardly try to develop new technologies, products or services, if at all. Sorry, for the long essay, but the issue is very, very nuanced and lies in the flawed foundations on which education system is laid out here.

As an IITian myself, I think one of the biggest problems isn't that of IIT, but the sheer lack of jobs for any other core field other than Computer Science (or maybe even Electronics). For the remaining branches, one may think that there must be some opening, cause if there weren't any jobs then why on earth would these departments even exist, right? But the fact of the matter is that virtually nobody in these branches actually takes a job in their own specialization (even if they do, it's because they weren't getting anything else). Also, as academics in IITs is much more rigorous and difficult compared to any other external institute, it's tougher for IITians that students from other colleges to study the courses from their own specialization, whilst also studying Computer Science for their placements in Software engineering firms. That leaves students from these branches with just 2 options - study in their own specialization and work hard to get a menial low-paying job, or some further education (if you have the money to fund it, ofc); or ditch their specialization entirely to study Computer Science for Software firms. Most people would clearly choose the second option, which works out generally. However, this year was much different as the global tech recession caused most Software firms to virtually freeze all placements. This has caused far worse placements than usual, as if we exclude high-paying trading firms, IBs and HFTs (none of which are related to engineering, btw), very very few companies actually paid a hefty salary for the to-be graduates. This recession has sent shockwaves even to junior batches, most of whom have essentially shifted their focus entirely from Computer Science to fields like Finance, Consulting, Management and Trading; none of which are related to engineering in any way. If anything, IITs' placements stats show that the domain of engineering itself isn't nearly as secure a domain in the job market as once thought to be. My prediction is that in the coming years, more and more IITians would join IIT just for the sake of it, whilst completely immersing themselves in studying Management-related fields for Finance and Consulting positions.

Their counterparts in the US, like MIT, Harvard etc, are not looked at as factories that create workers for mundane jobs but rather thinkers, thought leaders and entrepreneurs who will incubate the next adventure, business, technology and will "create" jobs and intellectual property that benefits the whole country and humanity in general. Until we change our mindset and attitude towards these institutions and foster them to be what they should be, we will continue to see these transactional disappointments.

I am an IITian and pass out from IIT MUMBAI (CS, 2012 Batch) currently working as a Senior Software Consultant in USA (NYC) in a Top MNC. I can definitely confirm that whatever you told is absolutely correct. Unfortunately, now the standard (In terms of Skill Sets) of IIT graduates has been degraded a lot and I feel very very bad about it because they are getting fired immediately. Their learning attitude is also not there in the industry because they think that they are the best because society and parents think so. To be very honest, after spending 10yrs in this IT Software industry, still I always look to enhance my skill sets and as per my reporting manager I am one of the extremely highly skilled professional but I really don’t know whether my job is safe or not in this global recession. People in the Society including the parents, they don’t want to understand that what an IITian is going through in his life. We are just living in a false illusionary society where people thinks that every IITian is well settled and perfect in their professional life which is absolutely wrong.

Instead, I've devoted my time to mastering C, C++, and Python, and delving into the basics of Kali Linux. Most of the jobs are limited to the IT sector. In IIt's, most students who prepare for IT companies ( Please mark my words. I wrote that students who prepare for IT companies, not the CSE students) get placed at the end of the 2nd day or 3rd day of placement. For some other branches, the jobs are a little fewer. But if you are targeting the IT companies and preparing correctly, you will land a good-paying job. Yes, skills play an essential role over degree. But this doesn't mean that degrees play zero roles. IIT tag can give you a chance to stand out, but how you will take advantage of that chance depends on your skills. I agree that IIT does not mean success. There are different ways also, but IIT still gives you something. In my opinion, IIT means something other than success. IIT gives you opportunities and the stage, but how you perform depends on you. One more point that I want to address is that assume that there is an IAS person selected as a cricketer in the Indian team. And he is not performing well in the Indian team. His performance is poor. So does retain him makes a good point? Obviously no. The same thing happens when you will get a job after IIT. If you are not doing justice with your job, then how you can say that the IIT tag should protect me (Don't take it personally, not talking about a massive layoff). This is incorrect to say that IIT should defend my job. Why should IIT protect your job if you do not add value to the company? One thing that I disagree with is equality. They do justice with equality. You should get some relevant information about the placement session in IITs. I am impressed with the placement sessions and placement guidelines at IIT compared to other colleges. In one day, there are two slots. And the company will get slots depending on the package they offer and the company's tag. A student can get any number of offers in a particular slot but has to accept only one offer in that slot and take exit from the placement. For example, If a student gets placed in company 'y' and in the same slot he was placed in company 'z', then he has to take one offer and take exit from the placement so that every student will get a chance and the student already know that which company came in which day and which slot. And most good companies got early slots only. So there is no point in participating in further slots. This will not happen when you first get placed for TCS, but then you will get to know that Google is coming. This will never be going to happen. Depending on its tag, relations, and package, the company will get slots. So there is no harm in taking an offer from a slot and taking an exit so that every student will get a chance. In the video, you mention that company 'X' offers less package. This may be true. But this needs to be completed information. If company 'X' offers less package and is not well-reputed. The company 'X' will not get the early-day placement slots. It got a slot after 10-12 days. Till 10-12 days, most of the targetted student gets placed. What I mean by the targetted student is let's assume company 'X' is an IT company, so till 10-12 days, most students who prepare for IT company get placed. Only those students left who prepare significantly less or no preparation for the IT company. I am saying that those students are okay in study. I am saying maybe they did not prepare for the targetted role. The point that I want to add is you have to make a good balance between the college tag and specialization. You have to understand the jobs available in the market for that particular specialization, and if a job is available, will this college help me get the job? Don't think I got the tag, and that specific tag will do every good thing for me ( This is true for all the tags, not only IIT). Many of us think that story ends when you enter into IIT. But the reality is your story is just started.

I am not an IITIAN. In my time, i saw so much hype among students in JEE, but I was like I cannot do it, but still gave it and as usual didn't clear it, at that point, my friends and relatives suggested me to take a drop year and give it again, but my mind said not to give this cause i didn't wanted to. I was also from a middle class family and I had passion in the tech field, I got addmission in a nice college in my state which took admission on basis of jee mains (these colleges were not top NIT or IIT). And worked hard and improved my skills side by side, and because of my work and skills, luckily I got a placement of 19lpa. So I was thinking that if i would've given JEE, I would've got 1-5CR packages, but after contacting some of my IITian friends, i knew that my decision was correct and i did a good job by not pressuring myself.

The curriculum was boring and hard, and people who scored much lower than me in JEE are earning 5 times more money than I am. I feel like IIT wasted my time. those who went to lower branches at IIT can understand my frustration because I don't get the respect I deserve. Additionally, individuals with less academic pressure not only read literature, learn new skills, and enjoy their leisure time but also engage in sports activities. Moreover, the fees charged by IITs are significantly higher compared to state engineering colleges. This year about more than 85 students got a offer of more than 1cr in IIT Bombay which is more than 10%. The purpose of IITs is not to give high paying jobs but to improve research and overall development of the nation. The reason why less percentage of IIT students get high paying jobs are because there are so many branches in IITs for which there is not a big job market. Even branches like mechanical and chemical don't give you very high paying jobs just after graduation. It takes experience. If IITs remove the lower branches, the percentage will increase. And still there are no other institutes in the country which give better salary than IITs for undergraduate programs. IITs also offer BSc courses which of course won't give high salaries unless you do masters.

Very well said, Akash! However, I want to mention that intelligence is evenly distributed among all individuals, and it ultimately depends on how one utilizes it. I am speaking on behalf of individuals who did not attend IITs. I have observed many engineers who are preparing for bank jobs or receiving computer training, including IIT students. Therefore, one should not label IIT students as the cream of society because one day they may have to compete with someone who did not attend an IIT. Additionally, even Indian CEOs in the US did not necessarily graduate from IITs. Many obtained additional MBA degrees or computer training, and 99% of individuals working overseas did not attend IITs and earn similar salaries to IIT graduates. Nowadays, attending top colleges is not essential, but possessing a basic degree and expertise in a sought-after software such as AI or machine learning can take you to great heights. This message is not intended to discourage IIT students or their parents but to inspire all others. As Akash stated, skill-based education plays a crucial role in shaping our future.
@akash947
@akash947 Год назад
Hi Akash, Thanks for the great episode as always - as an IIT graduate (2010), I resonate with your core message - the glossy pay figures of a few mask the overall picture. It was a similar situation in 2009-10 when I graduated. Wanted to make two comments as I have observed over the years: 1) Good salary offered by banks, consulting firms, and non-core jobs distorts the preferences of most students - kind of defeats the intent of establishing IITs to create engineering and research talent. This is a systemic issue which cant be fixed by the institutes - until core jobs become lucrative, good students will go for best-paying jobs irrespective of what they studied. 2) While immediate salary post-IIT might not be grand (10-16lac as you mentioned), the average earnings of an IITian over 10-15 years is a more appropriate lens to judge if IIT is worth the money/effort (and I would believe the answer is yes, as I have seen most of my batchmates, as I know, have done exceptionally well). That's where the brand and network effort starts to play. The challenge is this long term is easier said than considered - neither parents, nor students or media would look at this way - our human tendency is short-term/immediate reward thinking.

Aakash really thankful for touching the white elephant that my IITs (legacy ones in specific among them) are. Let me start for you and others to share that I qualified entering IIT Kgp and IITD 4 times put together, through nation wide competition in M. Sc (Phy), M. Tech (Appl Opt), PhD in Mech Eng & App Mech Depts. I sum up in two lines what I learned at IITs by remaining there for 10 years as a student, researcher, and finally research scientist viz., 1. Run against time yet produce quality research work. 2. Solve real hard complex mathematical equations. For instilling these two primary and fundamental skills all credit goes to the world class academic teachers I had along with the labs, workshops, library, and recreation facilities I got in the decade I spent there.💕💕💕 But as a proud IITian that I am, I will certainly fail if I do not list out the scores of negative things inherent in its faculty as human beings which are other than their academic accumanship with which IITs started and to date are sustained as well as prevailing there. I am using the word "PREVAILING" very consciously and with evidence which I will give here and later towards the end too that after Covid hit in 2020 with lakhs dying on roads and ill equipped health care hospitals, centers etc. I tried to shake up my IITs but failed. Mr Anil Wali, MD of the incubation center of the IITD to date did not move an iota (to my knowledge) when I sent him a list of developmental projects which would have benefited the Indian small & marginal farmers; rural, hilly, tribal, and coastal jhuggi jhopri residents availing self generated electricity to power their smart phones and light up their huts with LEDs; conserve ground water, and other projects. In other words the SC, ST, OBC, poor, women, weaker section of Indian masses. Reasons: 1. The faculty as well as administrative staff are 90+% of upper caste only to date. 2. Neither at the time of entering IIT nor during the stay, one faculty member invoked the students to work on a developmental project which may benefit the common Indian on the road making his/her life a bit relaxed and less hard working on a daily basis. 3. This despite the fact the faculty has best students entering each academuc year, best labs, best workshops, best facilities, funds on asking from govt, sabbatical to go on paid leave, present papers with TA & DA paid by tax payers money, excellent in campus flats for safe living, and hostel accommodation etc. But in my 10 years of stay I did not find ONE PATENT ANY DEPT OBTAINED WHICH COULD HAVE BENEFITTED THE COMMON INDIAN ON THE ROAD. Now as promised above and using our famous "muhavra of Hindi/Urdu" viz., 'Hath kangan ko aarsi kya hai' kindly go and watch the two videos of a young Asst Prof J. Chakraborty of IIT Kgp from Mech Eng Dept. One video is on the welcome to IIT for the fresh UG students. And second is for the fresh students of PG programs. You will find no where he motivates in both his videos the students to work on at least ONE DEVELOPNENTAL PROJECT while being at the IIT or after graduating in their life time wherever the student may be. When I put my remarks raising this on his those videos as I am from its VS hall of residence of IIT Kgp the "skunk" Prof deleted it and blocked me to raise any fundamental thing pointing out his upper caste mentality. Conclusion The swarn jati faculty of IITs by its DNA hates to work or invite its student to work on any project which would benefit the SC, ST, OBC, weaker, poor, marginalized section. Recall the very first chemistry lab experiment in 9th grade done by every science student across India is to produce oxygen through chemical reaction of reagents. DID ANY IIT COULD COME FORWARD DURING THE COVID TO PROVIDE THE PROCESS OF PRODUCING OXYGEN AND PACKING IT IN HAND HELD CYLINDERS? NO! When doing such a thing is not rocket science and the labs + workshops + students if put together would have done it literally in i5 days. NEITHER THE UPPER CASTE FACULTY NOR THE MANAGEMENT OF IITs WANTED IT. BUT THE UPPER CASTE FACULTY AND IITs ADMINISTRATION WANTS ONLY TO REMAIN IN ITS IVORY TOWERS. Some reader of my comments may like to know what as an IITian I did. So, for them I want them to watch my video on RU-vid I posted to shake the sleeping giants inside IITs but to no avail. I DID NOT LEAVE IIMs either in that video. I failed! 🙏🙏🙏

I am an IITian , I strongly agree with your point . The problem of IIT is that they are still focused on their traditional academic culture which should be revised over time . The people in pure or core engineering branches struggles these things the most.

Do they really struggle? I saw that almost everyone from IITs was placed in good companies on LinkedIn. Also, what is the average package of these core branches?

@@r65400They struggle more than this actually you are brainwashed by coaching media and media channels don't worry u will come to know about them after 3rd year

@@r65400 The average package of core branches in TOP IITs are 6 to 7lpa (i am talking about year and mostly half of them are unemployed) here top IITs are IIT Bombay , Madras , Kgp and Kanpur and new IITs are even less less than 4 to 5 lpa (yearly) do u think taking admission in IIT with a four year fee of 13 lakhs worth it

I found your episode very informative regarding data. I also give coaching for senior school chemistry for past 10 years the syllabus has not changed, same old concepts. We are not investing in education . Our youth lacks skill. We desperately need a educated education minister.

as an IITian I can vouch for this!! The problem is the jobs are limited to the IT sector, hence circuital branches (CSE, EE, ECE) are the only ones to have great placements (yes we on average get more than 35LPA CTC) . We definitely have the best faculty however considering the market condition engineering has now become more about cracking the coding interviews and getting into IT sector irrespective of your core branch.

really on an avg more than 35LPA CTC?? dont forget the term CTC plays a huge role here

@@aayushmohta592 yeah we actually do (I am from computer science). but for non circuital branches the scenario is grim.

see, the thing with this AI takeover is obviously scary, but we must understand that everyone should do what they desire and emergence of a disruptive technology shouldn't hinder it, rather it should make it more exciting. I would advise you to let her do what her heart wants and she surely would be able to make you proud. Please don't loose your sleep over the AI saga.

we should never waste money on these higher studies. For example my nephew after completing his simple BCA for three years got a break through in campus selection for monthly salary of 25000 that is 3 lakhs CTC And today after 5 years of total experience His monthly salary is now 125000 and CTC of 18 lakhs How ?? He has excellent command over English speaking and he focused on completing Microsoft and Cisco certifications from his college days itself. He has completed all the highest certifications in both this areas and is now leading a team of server and network engineers in 5 years. In his team people who have done BE 😂 after struggling for 4 years and spending there fathers hard earned money are reporting to him😅

IIT (Indian gov) spent lot of money on iitians and what iitians do go to usa or other countries and pay tax to their country and india dosent get profit. Its like padhega India toh bahega America. But isme iitians ki galti bhi nhi cuz according to their study they dont get good worth package which they deserve so gov should promote more indian startups and easy buisness laws.
