GearBoxVideo any idea of where to go for a custom ratio ring and pinion I would like to have a 3.55 gear set made up for a Chevy 14bolt full float rear
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 6 лет назад
Nobody is going to make a 1 off custom ring and pinion. Unless you want to drop some tooling money down and purchase 100 pieces. Motive makes the 3.73 and up for the 10.5" gear and they wopuld be the best to contact for custom gears. Expect to pay over 10K. You might get lucky and maybe they made some in the past that are sitting on the shelf.

thanks for your filming and time - that was really great - billet, you would think they were giving it away - it's easy to machine, light weight, and the cutting can be reprocessed, no molds, no pouring hot steel, easy to make what you want, a real win win - I'll bet a lot of the guys you spoke to thought you were a musician - looks like you can't shake that look, again thanks for all the filming

Thanks for watching. Most people think it's cheap to make but it's not. Some of the Alloys are very expensive and the Machine time is a big factor
@mpetersen6
@mpetersen6 5 лет назад
Plus add in the cost of the Machining Center, the CNC lathes, the grinder work if you are doing cranks and came. It's to the point between 3D printing and machining technology that you've got the sheckels you can get just about anything. I can't remember who , it might be Nelson, but they'll make you a billet AMC block if you want. But expect it to change. In maybe five years or so billet will be passe. By then the trick stuff might be 3D printed blocks and heads with alloys that would be very hard to make other wise.

FWI: About you comment on the "StepS" (Groves) on the machines aluminum cones, I'm pretty sure they were implemented to increase the "surface area" of the aluminum so is has a higher "Pacif"cooling rate, at least that is the reason we uses Irregular surfaces on Billet aluminum. since they are like "Mini tini" aircoolled fins.. I just stumble on your channel , hell of a good you do, I'm subscribed already, plus you are clever and funny too, so plus PLUS.. sadly the work I done/did is "darpa" seal so i can not tell you what it was made for... ricky

I would really like to improve my camaro T-5 trans. I have a 385 ci stroker going in it. And do not want to convert it to auto. I wouldn't mind straight cut gears, a bit noisy, but I wouldn't mind if it would handle the 600 HP, its not a drag car, and the stock trans handled the approx, 400 hp 355 I had in it, with about 100k miles on it.. I just don't want to spend over $1800-$2500 to do it. About $ $1000 is my budget. Great video !!!!

Was the show sold out and busy both days you were there? Looked like it was descent. I was hoping there was some news on gear oil innovations and vendors making retro kits for some of the older transmissions (Top Loaders, Saginaws, Muncie, T-5's). Did you see any Billet transmission gears? :-)
@GearBoxVideo
@GearBoxVideo 6 лет назад
Its trade only. The only thing usually sold out is hotels. This is a hardcore racing show, so there are no older transmissions there or people making kits like you asked about. That's typically at SEMA. People do cut gears out of billet alloys all the time, but alloy forgings are stronger.
@DougHanchard
@DougHanchard 6 лет назад
GearBoxVideo I've been to PRI and SEMA in the past. (2015/16). I'm meant sold out vendor space. I was hoping that some innovated vendor would come out with some new product add-ons for legacy transmissions. Things like oil pump coolers, that were toyed with back in the 70's. I know one guy that seriously looked at creating an air / electronic paddle shift for the muscle car 4 / 5 speed market after making one for a Honda Accord 5 speed 2 years ago. With today's CNC 5 Axis machines, I was thinking billet alloys that can be heat treated / hardened after initial CNC process. I know some have some so for Getrag transmissions. As you have said in the past, there are some pretty bad ass aftermarket support / products for GM and Ford 4/5 speeds. One interesting thing you might not know, relevant to your segment at the Wegner Racing spec engine is the migration to a spec transmission by several sanctioning bodies. An example is the Winters Raptor 2 Speed transmission, which may makes sense for tech officials (lazy), the unit isn't super strong and has to be refreshed frequently.

@phillyphil1513
@phillyphil1513 6 лет назад
yeah casting ain't going anywhere. billets always been around but the rise of billet in this specific application has simply come about as the ever increasing horsepower levels demanded more strength than OE and aftermarket castings could take. oh and then there's the customizable aspect which allows one to add even more strength via design which is icing on the cake in niche racing/motorsport environments.

All nice looking if you are a millionaire. For the average person today racing has gotten to expensive. It just is a memory of what the 40s 50s and 60s was. Sad things have gotten outa hand. Your lucky to afford a nice car for work and just living in general. I drag raced and had a street car till 2003. Glad I sold them then. The next year gas was 3 times as much. You see it at NHRA and NASCAR events to. Half the stands are empty. People can't afford to go unless its a vacation event.

This is really cool and everything, but taking a thousand horses out of a 7.5 liter engine (460 cubic inch) is kind of like getting just one limp-wristed handshake out of a battalion of marines. I mean, Koenigsegg take 1280-1600 horses out of a 5 liter (305 cubic inch) (1600 on E85). Sure their engines are a bit more expensive than a crate motor, but crate motors don't have to conform to emissions standards so it shouldn't be that difficult if they just finally let go of some of those ancient technologies (push-rod valves as a start, lack of water jacket, no oil squirter underneath the piston, etc) (Koenigsegg engine meets those emission standards in all major markets).
@bstevermer9293

lazygamerz Koenig is starting with a clean design board. Using existing old technology requires working around around 40 year old designs .

I understand what you are saying. Unfortunately you don't understand that certain engines are built to fall in the guidelines of rules and regulations of sanctioned racing classes. Of course there is new technology, it's just that you some of these builders are working within certain guidelines.

Dear Mr Wrong unless you have driven a Front wheel drive Civic with 306 HP I can tell you for a fact Torque steer sucks FWD sucks and while it might be swell doing to the store or towork 90 miles from home so I'm gonna stick with what works for me RWD .. I I'm no real fan of the blue oval Nor am I a Mustang guy ...
