Probably one of the most useful skills I have is the layered highlight. Doing a midtone in a bold but clean line and then almost drybrushing the bright highlight over that in the right spots.

That's the best 90 minute paint job ever achieved

Have not tried speed painting individual minis, but enjoyed batch painting for my Orktober project. Got the Orruk half of dominion done in the month with a few days to spare and it's some of my best work.

I've found, on Infinity at least, that a colored primer saves a lot of time as well. I painted Haqq using a tan primer that's the main color for most cloth, then other colors that easily cover tan. For me that's greens and browns. You can even do a Zenithal highlight. Like doing a navy blue primer, Zen-it, and then a lighter blue on that. Just make sure to thin down the second layer of color.
@TesseractMinis

That's a pretty cool idea! Could definitely see it working well for some schemes

@@TesseractMinis Saves time without cutting quality! Highly recommend at least trying it out. I found sometimes the black primer and white zen was almost too harsh of a contrast on some things. Great for others of course. Also keeping in mind: dark colors covers light, but takes forever to do the other way around.
@TesseractMinis
@TesseractMinis 2 года назад
Personally I don't bother with a traditional zenithal ever. I paint at full coverage and I don't need the light reference, so it's just an extra step for no benefit, for me.
@Space_Ranger

@@TesseractMinis Got it. I used to do the same but found the extra step of the zen, did help cut down on time and added to my painting. sometimes I don't need to do highlights in areas because the zen did it for me. However sometimes I made my paint to thick and ruined it anyway lol. But Zen or not, I think think a colored primer is the important part. Like on your rockets, I think you could have gotten away with priming them the main green you used. It wouldn't even hurt the flesh tones at all. Of course dark greys and blacks go over the green with no problems.

@@TesseractMinis I'm the opposite, I like the guide of the zenithal, at least for the sketch phase. On a few minis I refined over the sketch, but for regular troops I don't think I'm going to bother.

@@TesseractMinis yeah I'm getting there, definitely making progress. I'm painting some more kharadron overlords which were the first minis I ever painted, so much easier this time

Paint bravely, try new things, HAVE FUN, compare an old and new mini. You will probably notice a big difference after 6 to 12 months, I did and it was very motivating :)

@@DavesMiniMenagerie I do like those flying dwarf models! If I was going into AoS, it would be a faction I might consider, I've a huge soft spot for dwarven airships. It might be fun to convert the captain into Malakai Makaisson?

Great nice short video. Very good finish and some neat ideas I will borrow for myself. Personally, I'm a big fan of the "Head an shoulders get all the atention" school of thinking for speed painting, and it works wonderfully

I’ve been struggling with skin for weeks but your face method is really cool! Honestly if you did a video on the future where you just did that skin method close up, from start to finish, that would save my life lol
@TesseractMinis
@TesseractMinis 2 года назад
Awesome, really glad you like it! That skin method is honestly super simple - I've outlined stages of it before, but it's basically just a series of build ups between two colours - a dark sienna and a pale yellow. Then if you want to get fancy you use blue, green and magenta glazes to tone different areas. But it's a very organic process, different for each mini...so I've struggled somewhat to turn it into a self-contained tutorial.

Really nice scheme and job, now I have to get VMC Ice Yellow as well 🙈

My favourite speed tool is an airbrush. I've been thinking how to use it on my Infinity models, and I think I'm going to use it with Ice Yellow, to give a consistent highlight to the two main colours like you did.

@@TesseractMinis well, I painted my first model in nearly a year, and it's terrible! I've lost all coordination holding a brush, it was so difficult getting the paint in the right place! So I need to practice a bit first, before I try to paint these gorgeous minis. I hate to say it, but Space Marines might be the ideal practice subjects!
@Space_Ranger

HI there. See my comment. I use an airbrush all of the time but mainly just for priming and then white ink Zenithal highlighting. Then sometimes a base color over that. I also use colored primers. Like for yellow, I'd use a brown or tan primer, white zenithal highlight and then the yellow on that. Never try priming with a dark color and then yellow right on it. You get mud. If you are lucky lol. Airbrush is great for those first steps but not really worth it after. On big things like TAGs I will go the extra with it but not small things.
@Mikey__R

@@Space_Ranger cool, sounds a lot like sketch style, but with paying more attention to the underpainting colour? When I used to paint more often, I'd do something similar, but with a brush. I'll try it with the airbrush! Thanks!

Just found your channel, great stuff here, bit of a late question but do you have a list of paints used especially the clothing and green armour? thanks
@TesseractMinis
@TesseractMinis 2 года назад
Thank you! Unfortunately I don't have a list to hand, but it looks like I was painting entirely with Vallejo model colour on this one - so it should be fairly easy to visually match the colours against the Vallejo list, if you wanted to copy it.

@@TesseractMinis Thanks for such a speedy reply, yes looking for something very similar especially the armour and clothing but not as familiar with the Vallejo range but i'll try have a look through and match up.

I think perhaps German Camo Dark Green was the armour basetone? Although I'm saying that purely by eye. The video was a while back! Good luck with the search though, I'm flattered to have provided some inspiration

Hello , great video love the colors you used....could you possibly name each of the paints you used here ? Would love to create something similar.

Hiya Stephen. The main colours are: Trousers - VMC Old Wood Body Armour - VMC Refractive Green Under Shirt - VMC US Olive Drab The rust colour is Numeria Rust from Reaper. Blue caps are just mixtures of VMC Dark Prussian Blue and VMC Ice Yellow. Ice Yellow is also the common highlight tone for all the clothing. Skin is Reaper Shoanti Sienna and VMC Sunny Skin Tone. I think that's everything :)
