High Speed Low Level Cliff Soaring

A video to show the route between Ladram Bay near Sidmouth to West Bay near Bridport, using ridge lift off the cliffs on the English South coast. Apologies for the lousy quality from the tail camera, salt spray didn't take long to blur the lens, but the tail view gives the best impression of the relative heights of the cliffs along the way. The West bay cliffs at the end are just over 200' above sea level.
Songs are remixes of Hybrid's Disappear Here.

Wow, that's great flying. I like the audio, but it covers one of the biggest thrills, the near-silence of riding air.

Subscribed! - even though this power pilot was snubbed at most glider clubs and FBOs in the "States". I've heard glider clubs in the UK are friendly, yeah(?). Love the visuals and the kick-ass background music..... peaceful, but ALIVE!!! :)

Thanks for uploading. Stunning video of one of England's finest coastlines, I love Dorset. I have never had the chance yet of going up in a glider, and I would trade a lot to have experienced that flight. Perfect video.

Very nice! Wish there were some ridges near my gliding club, but at least we still get thermals once in a while ;)

This bit of coast is home for me, What an amazing video! I've always wanted to go gliding at some point and this has just made me what to do it even more so! I really did have no idea these things could be so agile. How high could you potentially glide up to?

Love this video! I quite often fly the cliffs along the coast here on my paraglider (most often between West Bay and Charmouth, but sometimes down at the Sidmouth end too) so it is great to see the whole run flown so fast and efficiently! You cross gaps in ridge lift which would be really hard/impossible to cross with my paraglider and it all looks so effortless. I'd love to have a go at flying the cliffs in a sailplane, it looks like a whole different ballgame.

Great film. Do you aerotow to the coast? And can you get back to NH with height gained from the cliffs? What sort of height could you get from the cliffs (if it wasn't more fun to be the hooligan!) Would it be rude to mention the 500' rule here?

Great flight!!!. How did you get altitude?. Was it from the wind from the sea?. Did you land in the same airfield where took off?
@Mysticlambo
@Mysticlambo 12 лет назад
@Balleka what about microbursts and windshears? although you could theoretically dump any ballast you had and throw down some flaps to get you over to the beach. Im betting you could catch a small thermal over that sand if you really needed to, or just land in the sand itself or a nearby feild. This looks like a DG or a Grob... what sailplane is this?

I wish i would like you. You are so cool! :) Greetings from Finland, there is always winter and cold and bad gliding conditions...
@tomandsophie

What happens if you lose the ridge lift for some reason? I know when I'm flying my paraglider in coastal dynamic lift that I can easily put it down on the beach (I once lost lift at Thorncombe Beacon and had to land on a tiny tiny tiny bit of bouldery-shingly beach at the botton - a little frightening but do-able!). I suppose you must be very confident that the wind is going to stay strong enough to keep you up. Very impressive flying. By the way, which club do you fly

@7grounds 11 лет назад
Could you please do more of those, thanks
@bolowke666
@bolowke666 12 лет назад
@Balleka and when the wind would go away you could land on the beach. I think the sand would be better than every field you could find.

i must fly them cliffs! where do you launch from?
@bentlepa
@bentlepa 9 лет назад
Was the water landing as a result of running out of lift whilst cliff soaring ? I was watching another video when you were cliff running & wondered how you got back to the airfield because the lift did not seem strong.

hi great vid , i live in Dorset and was a paraglider pilot for 12 yrs i never ventured down that way , Ringstead east of Weymouth was as far as i got just wondered if you could have made it that far and beyond , swanage maybe ?? Can you give me an idea of cost for a sailplane and what the cost is to get qualified . cheers Lawrence

When flying a glider are you constantly "feeling" for the wind or does it become a second nature, something you don't put much thought into?
@Mysticlambo
@Mysticlambo 12 лет назад
just out of curiousity, what was your plan if you caught sink? you were too low to turn onto land so were you just gonna ditch the bird and bail in the water?
@jasonarthur6602
@jasonarthur6602 10 лет назад
Okay glider freaks, what's the "tube" coming off the top of the vertical stabilizer? Is that a comm antenna, nav antenna or some crazy glider stuff I'm not familiar with?
@MarianKeller
@MarianKeller 9 лет назад
That "tube" is the so-called total energy probe. It is needed for total energy compensated variometers.
