The first video from my recent visit to Peterborough looks at LNER, Hull Trains, and Grand Central services, filmed from platform 4 of the station. I expected my trip to give me a last opportunity to ride on an Inter City 225 set, however, the following day LNER announced that they would be retaining some sets for some time to come. The video features Inter City 225, Azuma, Adelante and Paragon units.

Thank goodness a few Mk4 sets are being retained. I will always try to travel on those when possible. The seat comfort an noise levels are much superior to the 801s/2s. That said, they do seem kinda slow off the mark by comparison, but overall they are the nicer and more relaxing way to travel IMO. Shame about the HST, but I think nearly 42 years was a damn good innings! They will be missed but I guess we have to move with the times and decarbonise our public transport system as much as possible.

The acceleration of the IETs of all classes is in a different league to everything that came before. They are like suburban EMUs. My experience of the LNER Azumas is better than the GW IETs, but I don't understand why. The mark 4 coach is just so comfortable, especially when compared to the Pendolino or Voyager.

Do you know what is happening to the LNER HSTs. Do cross country, scotrail and EMR still have HSTs though

Won't be long till the Intercity 225s (Class 91+Mk4+DVT) fleets are to disappear but I think LNER might keep some of the Intercity 225 and Intercity 125 (Class 43 HST+Mk3) units. As the Azuma Class 800 and Class 801 IETs are slowly taking over the East Coast Main Line. And Great Northern are currently using the Class 387, Class 365 and Class 717 used on the Moorgate & Hertford Loop lines. And with Thameslink Class 700 operating services in & out of Peterborough. And Greater Anglia Class 755 Bi-Mode Flirts that are also in service and EMR operating the local Peterborough-Lincoln route with their own Class 153/156 Sprinter DMUs.

Nothing against the current ECML fleet, but I definitely prefer the way Inter City ECML trains looked and sounded on your previous visit. Thanks for the video.

@Sicilian Gecko I accept railway's have to move with the times and Azumas look impressive. There have been few better sounds though in my lifetime than a Deltic racing along the ECML and the noise of the Napier engines.

May be a naive question but why do Intercity225 sets have Class 91 at one end and Class 82 at other? I suppose, one of them is locomotive and 1 is DVT? But when train is reversed, then DVT heads and locomotive trails? Just trying to understand the structure and working of these sets. Thanks.
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 года назад
You are correct. The 91 provides the movement. The 82 is only a driving trailer. So the 91 pulls in one direction and pushes in the other. This used to be common practice across Europe. Historically small branch lines, especially on the GWR had push pull arrangements. On the modern main line ScotRail pioneered the Idea when they converted some coaches to driving trailers for the Edinburgh to Glasgow route. This expanded to other Scottish routes. The West Coast main line adopted the practice with the introduction of the mark 3 based DVTs that are now on the Norwich service. The East Coast main line mark 4 sets had DVTs from new.

@Boogies Trains wonderful videos is is busy for freight at Peterborough daily
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 года назад
Hi. I video'd quite a lot of freight that day. What I have done is split the clips into four episodes. I know from my RU-vid stats that people don't like videos that are much more than 15 minutes so, by splitting the material up, I think people enjoy it more. Also I like to tell a story in my commentary. I'm still working on the other episodes but I think the freight part will be coming out in about a fortnight.

@@BoogiesTrains how can I tell my stories and how do I break up my videos and also how do I create I catchy title
@BoogiesTrains
@BoogiesTrains 4 года назад
Hi. I use video production software called Power Director. You might be able to pick up an old version quite cheaply. I started with a free copy of version 12. I paid to upgrade to version 15 but have found no good reason to update any further. I find it very instinctive to use. It does well in reviews. Other software exists and might be equally good. I've looked at a couple but couldn't get excited at trying to learn how to use them instead of Power Director. With Power Director you drag clips onto the timeline, trim them to suit, add subtitles and transition effects, put the title and end screens on and then hit 'produce'. The software then makes a new file of your completed video. It also has some capabilities to reduce camera shake, background noise and improve lighting if required. It takes a bit of time to do all this but it's not difficult and is part of the fun. Once the produced video is uploaded to RU-vid, you need to add the end screen etc.

Hi Sam. I am very pleased to hear that. I hope you find them both enjoyable and informative. I am based in London and usually restrict myself to locations that I can get to on my Freedom Pass. Within that constraint, if there is anything specific that you would like to see, I will put it on my to do list.

Do LNER normally use two five car sets together on the ECML because Virgin were going to use some individual five car sets as stoppers I believe?

excellent informative video mate well done . Yeah there keeping ten extra sets of the 225s till DEC2023. F Y I L N E R have ordered 10 new azuma,s from hitachi , lets hope there the nine car formation as the 2x5 car are an abolutE waste of money having 2 redundant power cars in the middle free wheeling all day long , the initial cost of these power cars must have cost a fortune ,and do they have 2 train managers or just the one hopping on and off all day and what if theres an emergency in the wrong half of the train !! . THEY LOOK NICE BUT THATS IT im afraid they are certainly not fit for purpose . thats the (2x5) cheers mat keep the vids coming :) SYD

What on earth are you all on about? The Hitachi trains are multiple units. The motors are all underneath the passenger compartments. Notice how passengers can now sit in the first and last coaches, where the locomotive or driving trailer used to be. In any case, what gives you the authority to decide that the five car units are not “fit for purpose”?
