If you compare how different the resulting spin is from a wedge shot when you hit the 2/3rd groove on the wedge face versus the 5/6th groove, (thousands of rpms), then you will realize how important getting the right bounce on your wedge is for Your swing and the conditions You play in is; and also how important it is to play the right shaft weight (usually heavier is better) for you to repeat that same swing over and over is, versus trying to chase an extra few hundred RPMs (that's also fine).

Correct, aka Tiger stepping. Same results with two different methods. Only issue is how much room you have to tip when talking about .355 shafts. Usually not a problem for 3/8 inch trim. Hi AJ love your 👍Video’s, However with Wedges & speciality Wedges I have found stiff shaft’s limit the club’s ability to play different short game shot’s, in my 56deg Callaway PM grind Wedge I use a Project X 5.0 flex Pxi Shaft, This shaft help’s on versatility of shots hitting lower trapped shots & higher flighted shots, And think manufacturers have understood this & now offer & lighter Wedge shaft option, 90% of 56deg wedge shots are hit less than full ie:- partial shots it makes sense to use lighter softer shafts, What are your thoughts AJ, Thanks Dickey UK 9hcp 75year Senior Golfer

I agree this setup is not going to be for every golfer especially in regards to weight. Most pros still use the softer shaft in the wedges because they prefer the feel. That set has a dedicated 36.5 length shaft for the wedge so I would use that shaft again in the higher lofted wedges. Dynamic Gold does not make that length, which is where this whole idea comes from. The PX LS does, so you can just use that same wedge shaft in all the wedges.

When you say “extra”, do you mean from raw tip to the prescribed trimming instructions? Specifically SFiber i series, PW is 3.5” per manufacturer…do you go to 4” for GW, 4.5” for SW and 5” for LW??? Parallel section is only 5.5 long. Or for the “spinner” in this wedge/shaft combo do you tip trim a +1flex raw shaft to 9i specs for installing? Its also, not always great to start stiffening the end of the bag i.e. you start to get inconsistent dispersion i.e. non consistency for the same swing trough your bag. Its the holy grail to get every club in your bag respond to, fades, draws, low and high shots as you attempt them through your bag e.g. why do I always love a certain few clubs in your bag and hate a few others? Its not you the decent golfer, its your equipment. Hence see your club fitter. @EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 года назад
You could go either. The method we use keeps everything pretty similar on static weight but you can just as easily use a 10g heavier (for example) shaft in the wedges if you like a heavy wedge feel. In either case though you will want to use a 9i shaft, not the 8i since Steelfiber makes a dedicated wedge shaft in the lineup. Also not sure how stiff the 95 is in comparison to the 110. That 110 is a beast compared to flex.

@EFGMC
@EFGMC 10 месяцев назад
You don't need to do this in the Modus line because they have those dedicated wedge shafts in 105, 115, and 125 weights. Dynamic Gold only goes down to 9i shaft which is why we are (creating) a wedge shaft with this trick. Modus has the wedge shaft already, so no need to use something else.

Love your content, AJ! I discovered your channel this winter and it kept me busy tinkering while the courses were closed here in Chicagoland. Thank you for that! I play DG S-300s in my winter irons set, so I gave the X-100 8-I spinner shafts a go in an old pair of 52° and 58° Adams Tom Watson Classics. I think I did it wrong, though. The wedges are .370 bore, so I just tipped parallel .370 DG X-100 blanks 3 ½ inches to 8-iron spec. I hadn’t yet watched the other video detailing your preference for constant-weight (taper tip) vs. descending-weight (parallel tip) shafts, so I think I missed the boat by not shimming a pair of 8-I taper tips instead. I’m guessing with my current 3 ½ inch-tipped .370 X-100 shaft combo, I’ve probably got the spinner flex component right, just in a slightly lighter package? I hit them pretty well over the winter, just curious about this nuance. Thanks again for getting all of us golf junkies through those miserable winter months!
@EFGMC
@EFGMC 2 года назад
You are right on with your assessment. The resulting shafts will be lighter than .355 tip versions. Flex should still be similar. If your irons are .370 then the weight progression will be consistent although descending. If not, then the weight drop will be more significant but may or may not be noticeable to you. Will just need to practice with them and see.

So in the video you mention that Dynamic Gold shafts only go to nine iron. So when it comes to the PW or GW are you saying that the nine iron shaft would be what is used in the PW and GW? Just good to know. I bought the shaft used pulled from some other clubs. So I just replaced same to same as identified when the shafts were pulled. The Modus line makes a designated wedge shaft. Dynamic Gold only makes down to 9i which is where this idea comes from. You shouldn't need this method as much in the modus line. There is a certain loft angle where you see diminishing returns on spin. Somewhere around 54 degrees give or take. Over that number the ball can not compress enough on the face to impart the same kind of spin.

@@EFGMC now that is intriguing! Do you have a source I could check out?

This is basic soft stepping. Dustin has this in his irons. I hard step my parallel S300's. X100's are wider in diameter vs S300's. A wider diameter makes a shaft stiffer. Problem with using a shaft that is too stiff in a wedge =, for a partial short i.e. not full speed, you tend to pull/push because you can feel you are getting less help form the shaft. Ultimately, you have to try ALL options for all wedge swing types to get the best fit for all wedge shots i.e. you dont want a great SW that is great for full shots, but not good for 50 yd punches

You can't go wrong with a longer stiffer shaft!

Why wouldn’t you just go a step stiffer. I.e. use an extra stiff PW instead of a 9 iron extra stiff?

Great question. Just to build on this, there seems to be two different things happening here: (1) switching from a stiff to extra stiff shaft, which increases stiffness, and (2) butt trimming, which decreases stiffness. So we don’t really know whether the end result is a shaft that is overall more or less stiff than the original wedge shaft.

You could and get similar results. What this does is keep the consistency of feel between what’s in the PW and the higher loft wedges. Going X PW could feel too rigid.

Can anyone confirm for 2023 for sure KBS does not make a PW shaft for their flagship Tour shaft? On their website it lists a PW option separately from 9 Iron implying it is indeed a different shaft. So confused

Does this also apply for graphite shafts like Steelfiber?

SF makes a dedicated wedge shaft so this isn't necessary.

@@EFGMC Dynamic gold also makes a dedicated wedge shaft so then why did you do it?

@@ultimatejay That Spinner shaft actually does the opposite of what we want. More loft and less spin.
