The classic Disneyland version. The history and nostalgia, even with unfortunate story changes over the years, keep this my favorite attraction of all time. Still, the Shanghai version looks spectacular and I'm glad they reimagined the classic with innovation and new technologies. While certainly better in some categories, overall experience goes to the original. It is too beloved in my book.

Shanghai all the way. This ride is one of the reasons I want to go back to Shanghai Disneyland. The first time we went on I was just sitting in absolute awe because that was a level of immersion I had rarely had before (only sort of comparable experience for me was flight of passage, and that one gets points deducted because of the glasses). Been on all PotC rides worldwide and this is my absolute number 1.

The original. Certainly the Shanghai version is the most technologically impressive version, but I prefer all the many animatronics, order of scenes, the awesome lift hill back to unload…it just has so much charm that I feel is lacking from big digital screens no matter how impressive they may be.

It's insane to thing how did they came up with this ride system. Like, in a way, it doesn't feel absurd to think they had this idea, but at the same time I'm like "how did they thought on that?". Great video as always :)

Yeah, when I saw the patent it took all of 2 seconds to understand it and I was blown away not only how simple it is, but how effective it is. They could have easily made it over engineered and complex with a bunch of moving parts, but they did all of that with a completely static and passive system. Absolutely ingenious.

It still blows my mind that some of the Caribbean rides don't have drops. I mean they aren't crazy log fume drops, but I always loved them and they did great to change the different scenarios you go into. I like the idea of a backwards one sending you into the depths of the sea.

Great video thank you. We lived in China from 2016 - 2020. It was great to experience the opening of a Disney park. The Pirates ride and Tron are the best Disney rides ever. The homage just after the drop into the water, the skeletal dogs and pirates jail scene, gives riders notice that the "old way" is dead as they are about to experience the future in a total immersion dark ride.

Wow. Outstanding video and model. And it's nice to see that Imagineering is as innovative as ever. Have you thought about trying stop-motion animation when showing the movement of your scale models? It would admittedly be a lot of extra work for you, but it would eliminate having your hand in the picture and it would level up the polish of your videos even more. Just a thought.
@AmusementLabs
@AmusementLabs 2 года назад
Thank you. Funny you should mention the stop motion part. So the model, is actually quite fragile and broke mid film which is why I don't have a lot of footage of it moving. Later in the video I do use a little stop motion magic cause I had to reposition due to it not being able to slide like it did originally. Stop motion wouldn't be an issue and actual was pretty easy since I taped the model to the table and have a mic boom with a camera attatchment.

After years of the same ride at Disneyland, I feel they should "Update" the Pirates of the Caribbean as well. Disney Shanghai really knew how to entertain us with their high tech. I also wish for "It's a Small World" be more modernized in a way whereas keeping the same style with a little more 3D effect and more detailed movements of it's animatronics.

This is a wonderful, meticulously researched video. Your explanation of how the boat switching works is more clear than anything the ride engineers ever told me. 🙂 I had the pleasure of working on the ride during its creation and design phases, and I wrote the show script. That's even my handwriting on some of the brainstorming boards! The two people shown explaining the ride system are Luc Mayrand, the Creative Director, and Nancy Seruto, the Show Producer... the superheroes who led Pirate ride (and all of Treasure Cove) from beginning to end. Thanks so much for documenting this for all the superfans out there.

This is a fantastic video. I love the way you not only explain but illustrate with 3-D models how the ride vehicles operate. Disney is clearly the forerunner in amusement attraction technology, especially in the areas of ride vehicle development, set design and audio-animatronics. So, what gives? In this day and age, giant TV screens are not Disney magic. They're not magical at all. We all have TVs at home, some of us huge ones with ultra-HDR screens. We're used to seeing digital effects in films and even have digital effects in our Smartphone apps. The use of TV screens is nothing but budget cutting by a company that can afford not to. Today's Disney Parks charges its customers more and more while delivering less and less. I don't like the use of what are basically "jumbo trons" in Disney attractions. Disney's reliance on and overuse of TV screens is extremely disappointing. Walt Disney asked his Imagineers to lift stories and characters off their 2-D pages and screens so that they can live in the 3-D world. Today's Walt Disney Imagineering, under the direction of bean counters rather than storytellers, has taken a giant step backwards. I know of NO ONE who would rather look at giant video screens than beautifully-crafted and programmed tableaux of lively animatronics with movements enhanced by special effects. The fact that this monumental attraction features only four such figures is an embarrassment. Spinning ride passengers around in a boat is not a substitute for great storytelling via the use moving 3-D characters in real life sets. I'd rather be in an old school boat, seeing scene after scene of dynamic animatronic action, than being spun from one TV to another. Again, this a GREAT video. Bravo and thank you, Amusement Labs. 👏👏👏👏👏 But Disney Corporation, you get nothing from me but heartfelt BOOS for your overuse of TV technology instead of real Disney magic and innovation. I'm not impressed. 👎👎
@astridastrid834
@astridastrid834 2 года назад
Personally, I am not a fan of animatronics, at least not if they're supposed to be regular people. Meaning, in this ride, Davy Jones (tentacles, claw and all) works - Captain Jack Sparrow doesn't. They always break the immersion for me because they just look so fake. Don't get me wrong, they're much better than they used to be, but they still do not look real. When done well (and that was definitely the case for this ride, at least for the most part), the screens add depth and details to the story while basically disappearing in the scenery. The giant screens for going underwater and resurfacing were amazing. It felt so realistic that I grabbed onto the boat because the pictures made me feel like the movement was real. I've been on Soaring and while it also utilizes screens and movement, it is a joke compared to this ride. I never experienced much immersion in soaring because of the video quality and the edges of the screen, the visible bending of straight lines... Just my personal preference. I would take the Shanghai PotC over any of the others any day, to a not insignificant part because they do not rely on animatronics.

@@astridastrid834 That's where we differ: I love animatronics. A "Pirates" attraction with only four figures seems very sparse to me. However, I, too, noticed the weird eyes and face on the Sparrow animatron. That's just poor quality control. At Disneyland, California, two of the three Sparrow figures are great. The last one (rocking in the throne-like chair) has a similarly strange face, especially since it's viewed at close range. Furthermore, its claw-like hand and weird wrist action makes poor Jack look like he's suffered a terrible injury. There are those who might argue that these are amusement attraction ride figures, not high art. So, we shouldn't be so picky. But I do hold Disneyland to a higher standard. It's what the park's founder Walt Disney promised.

Although the ride system is definitely amazing, I do prefer the Paris' version of the ride which, in my eyes, is the best POTC version on earth. And I looked for an edge of a reflective glass (or film as you say) and sure enough the sneaky designers hid it along with the angle of those ropes! 15:30 you can see a distorted edge of reflection. Convenient how the ropes provide a wipe across our view, like a hidden cut in a long oner shot in a film.

It's the Omnimover meets the WEDWay PeopleMover meets Pepper's Ghost. Magnificent, Bravo Disney Imagineering! One small nitpick, as an electrical engineer. The linear induction motors you say are run by an inverter at 60 Hz, is not quite true. Being an inverter drive, it can run at any frequency, generally up to 400 Hz for standard designs. That's how they acheive variable speeds for the boats. Otherwise, excellent presentation Amusement Labs.

Excellent video and worthy of all the praise it has received here! Great job! However....what, exactly, is "infamous" about the Pepper's Ghost illusion in the Haunted Mansion (14:52)? No, "infamous" does not mean "very famous" (or something equally positive and praiseworthy). In fact, the word means "Having an exceedingly bad reputation; notorious. Causing or deserving severe public condemnation; heinous."

How is this ride an overliance on screens? It's got a nice blend of both screens and animatronics. Plus the the huge screens mixed with the practical sets and effects here actually make it really immersive and they don't use the screens as a crutch unlike some other rides do. Gotta say I would rather have this version of the ride than the one in Magic Kingdom.

Thanks for another great video. The 3D model is impressive! The boat is Huge and I rode it twice, once from the front and a second time from the back. It makes a Big difference with the timing of effects especially the Bones to Jack Sparrow effect. You mentioned the Haunted Mansion ballroom effect which uses Glass but then you talk about a "screen". I believe they used Glass at a 45 degree angle that is hidden by the 45 degree Mast. They placed the Bones Horizontally in front of and below the Glass to reflect off the Glass when the Bones are lit up and do a lighting transition. Since we are moving it needs to be 3D actual Bones and a "screen" would be flat 2D and not look right. The effect happens Very Fast and can be missed by the people sitting in the back of the boat! BTW, the projection video on the screen of the fighting pirates is washed out. It looked really Bad when I rode it pre-covid shutdown.

A few things, first, does the talking skull at the start and the two talking heads “guarding” the treasure (they are doing a bad job) just as we enter the scene not count as animatronics? Also, there are two possible endings you can get from the experience. One: Mission failed, the treasure turns out to be seaweed. Two: Mission successful, you got the treasure and Jack Sparrow sings “Yo ho Yo ho a Pirate’s life for me!” (Yes, to pay tribute to the original rides, they brought back the song). It is rumoured the ending you will get is based off of if you’re boat number is even or odd. On my last trip a few weeks ago, I rode the ride two times. The first time I got mission successful and the second time the next day, I got mission failed. The first time, the boats around me all got mission successful as well and the second time, the two boats before and after me got mission successful (which would prove the odd even rumour, as I would have been odd/even and the two before and after me would be the opposite). Maybe the first day the other version wouldn’t download as I rode it in the mourning or the cast members felt nice?

One other thing, a personall opinion. The over-use of projection screens does seem cheap to me. It was used to great effect on "Rise of the Resistance", which I was fortunate to see at WDW just before the virus came to town. But, c'mon man. The tons of animitronics was what made the original Pirates ride so special. I do understand that hydraulic leaks were the constant bane of Disney Maintenance however.

Shanghai Disneyland is not cheap at all, and it is simply much newer than all the other parks. Looking at some of the newer attractions in the American parks, they are not less innovative or entertaining. The parks just have their old attractions still running. If you look at the older foreign Disney parks, they are a far cry from Shanghai. Also, if you look at the other attractions in Shanghai, it's not really more attractive. This and Tron are the two stellar attractions. The rest is not much different than the American parks, which invested in crazy new Star wars rides

That's a great ride, but they don't have my beloved Barbossa there

This POTC is much advanced than WDW, DL, DLP, and Tokyo’s!

But Disney World's Magic Kingdom was (completed) without Pirates, but tourists didn't take too kindly to that

I actually met the guy who made this ride a few years ago. I was raving about how great mission breakout was and he was within earshot and said “take a look at this”

personally I don't think this holds up against the Pyrates of the Caribbean ride in LA

Original PoTC ride>>>>>

This version is too reliant on projection mapping. It looks like that was done to save money on animatronics. My favorite version is the original Magic Kingdom ride. Not the current version. I prefer the original set designs. Nothing ground breaking just an amazing dark ride.

Not a fan of all those screens, feels like you're watching a movie rather than riding a ride. The physical structures of the ride is ok and the technology is A+ but all those screens feels like they cheaped out. Universal Studios went that way with couple of their new rides and they suck.
