Learn how high temperature high shear (HTHS) is fast becoming associated with increased fuel efficiency when developing new high performance, low HTHS viscosity engine lubricants. Also, learn about testing methods, including SAE J300 and ASTM D4683, and how an oil's viscosity is classified.

The claim made here is that lower HTHS is a good thing. That's not true in a great many normal situations. In any given oil grade, the higher the HTHS, the better that specific oil protects at 150°c (think ring packs, rod bearings and turbochargers) when compared to oils with lower HTHS.

I lost a Ford 3.0L engine because the oil I was using was low HTHS. I saved maybe 3% in fuel economy and ended up having to buy a new car.

So in order to keep good protection better base oils and add packs need to be used.

1% to 3% of fuel savings at a cost of rapid engine wear 🤣🤑🤑

So lower HTHS viscosity doesn't affect engine protection?

Lol no it 100% does

@@zackz1260 Thanks, somehow this video said the opposite and focus on lower HTHS to save fuel.

I believe you meant to indicate ASTM D4683 in the above write-up.

Is there a direct correlation between HTHS and engine wear?

Most racing oils have higher HTHS for a reason.

Absolutely

Yes. Inadequate HTHS for the application will result in higher wear, but a higher than required HTHS won't necessarily reduce wear. If you look up "HTHS wear graph", you'll see that the wear rates of various components often increases sharply when HTHS drops below around 2.3-2.6 and level off at an HTHS of around 2.9-3.5, but again, the exact HTHS requirements will vary depending on the application.

Good save SAE 15w40 full saps and high hths whith a lot of zddp.

I love how they gloss over the excess wear caused by low HTHS oil.
