Arriving 2 minutes late like Magnus, beating the opponent promoting to a knight and then getting your peak ELO in the same game is absolutely astounding, that's a well deserved peak. And then, I'm here, trying to not blunder my queen on every move and not shit my pants. Great content.

Yes world class; Levy has spoken very frankly about the things that make over the board chess tournaments so challenging. The implication of course is obvious: as a *commentator* without any pressures or mental gremlins messing things up, his analytical skills are of a person with a relatively much higher ELO rating. There is more to chess than playing it, and when it comes to "presenting" chess to a worldwide audience, there is nobody better.

Honestly, what you're describing - that you got better after "brain fog", makes sense to me. I think that when you're training your mind in some discipline, whether it be chess, a musical instrument, etc., sometimes it's beneficial to take a pretty long break from practice in order to let your brain delete bad habits. It seems kinda paradoxical, but I believe it's true.
@AtlanticPerspective

@mikeiavelli
@mikeiavelli Год назад
Actually, in AI / Machine learning, there's this notion of pruning parameters from a neural network, that prevents "overfitting" and therefore helps with generalising results to more situations. (I guess that *overfitting* here is similar to "bad habits", and ofc if you get rid of bad habits, you get better.)
@boingodoingo1930
@boingodoingo1930 Год назад
I've been doing this my whole life when trying to get better at things. I grind for a few months and then take a week or two break from even thinking about it. I always come back a little better. I've mostly done it in FPS and RTS games, but it works for most stuff in my experience (cooking and guitar are others from my experience.)
@8stormy5
@8stormy5 Год назад
For me, whether it's chess or counter-strike or music, it's usually that bad habits start to form and snowball over time combined with the yips of knowing that I'm underperforming. Taking a break and letting those bad habits be forgotten is usually worth the time it takes to re-practice the basics. This is incidentally why it's so important to have the fundamentals down in anything you do.

A few days ago, GothamChess predicted that he would get 10M subs by the end of 2023. He used a linear model, taking two points, finding the first degree polynomial that fit them, then plugging in when the end of 2023 is (377 days later) (also, he should have said 9.1M). I don't think a linear model is appropriate for predicting subscriber count as a function of time because growth slows with time. I decided to fit a logarithmic function to include the two points given and came up with a prediction of around 3.5M subs (really around 3.54M) subs at the end of 2023. The model isn't perfect, as it doesn't take "chess booms", short periods of exponential growth, into account, but with the information given, that's the best guess available. s(t)=ln(2.2*10^6)/ln(41.7183)*ln(29.7183+t) is the function I came up with. s(t) is a subs on day t. s(377) is approximately 3.54M. Remember how I said this model is not perfect. It predicts that GothamChess will reach 10M subs in approximately 63000 years. A bit pessimistic, but given the information it's the best I can do. The linear model is currently out performing the logarithmic one, but I think the logarithmic one will be more accurate in the long run. Fun project either way. Note: 41.7183 and 29.7183 are approximations because I was not skilled enough nor did I have the patience, to solve b^(11/10)-b=12 for b by hand. If anyone can solve that analytically, I would love to know how. Edit: I got curious and wanted to check how my function was doing , and I found that I somehow wrote it incorrectly. The numbers I get when I copy an paste what's written above into demos are orders of magnitude too small. I shouldn't be too surprised at this, especially considering I've likely sustained several untreated concussions due to doing math, but it goes without saying that I am a dumbass. Hey past me, where did you put your notes? Oh that's right, you can't respond because your memory has been reduced to a mediocre, incorrect, unnecessary post on the internet, that will effectively do nothing but remind your future self of his inadequacy. You have damned me to self loathing, and I deserve it because you once existed.

Nice one man. You are raising your own elo and everyone else's. I have been watching your videos the last couple of weeks and really improved my game. I have started noticing other players play wasted moves and am now beginning to capitalise on that. Before I only knew how to move the pieces and used by own logic to play. Once you start to understand the theory of the game, it makes a big difference. I'm only an 1100 now but I feel I have the tools to raise, just need to get used to using them. One piece of advice I'd give to others on a similar level or lower than me, is just play around with the knowledge you gain from studying the game. I saw my elo drop when I started to implement my learning, but once I practiced with it, I have started to see it climb again.
