Was lucky to get a good view of the Highland Fling performed by dancers from 1st Battalion Pipes & Drums Scots Guards. The performance was part of the Friday Night Concert curtain raiser to the 149th Scottish Highland Gathering & Games at San Ramon Marriott, August 29, 2014. The 1st Battalion Pipes & Drums Scots Guards are led by Pipe Major Ross McCrindle.

Next time you will see them they will be in combats, don't mix with with them if you value your bits.

Nice. I was impressed by the scene in the movie, Waterloo where men of the Gordon Highlanders performed the sword dance. Must have been about 30 dancers. Apparently, they and drums and pipe band were officers and men of the 1st Bn, Gordon Highlanders.

I am assuming that the young men we see performing here are young enlistees who are serving as active duty / full-time soldiers in the Scots Guard or in other Highland Regiments. Question: How are these troops recruited or "tapped" to perform in the capacity we see here as Pipers, Drummers and Dancers?? Were they musicians & dancers before they joined... or were they recruited or volunteered once they had served in the Regiments?? If so... what is the required criteria??

Is there a difference between this version of the dance and the version done by women in competitions? Like is this one regional or only done by men or people in ranks?

First, competitive Highland dance is not only done by females. Most competitive dancers are female, it's true, probably largely due to the fact that our societies often see dance as too "wimpy" for males to do (despite the fact that I know few "regular" men who can rival the strength of men who are dancers)... but males do compete in Highland dance (look up Gareth and Deryck Mitchelson, Billy Forsyth, David Wilton, Daniel Carr, Tony Cargill, among many others). Competitive Highland dance, as the other person who replied noted, is, like many/most competitive forms of dance, more highly-structured and regulated than the dance practiced traditionally. It has to be, because that's where the competition comes in-- it tends to become increasingly complex and prescribed as competitors must become increasingly better to beat each other. What you see here is closer to the traditional roots-- which, yes, originated at least partially in military training, which is why it would be silly for anyone to feel a male highland dancer as wussy-- than the competitive version you've probably seen at a Highland Games. Don't think of them as one being "better" than the other (as many fall prey to doing)-- think of them as being two slightly different members of the same family, with one having evolved to a very specific purpose.
