In today's episode, I take you to the Scottish highlands where my family have bought an old house and barn conversion called the Manse, and will be spending at least a year working on this as a renovation project. The progress has been very slow and in today's video i'll show you how the roof is going.

It's hard to do renovations in the winters especially if it was the coldest winter in 25 years. It would be so much more difficult during lockdowns. Now that it is warm weather and the lockdowns are over I think the renovations will go much faster. I have always dreamed of renovating an old farm house in the Scottish Highlands. Can't wait to see when it is finished.

i used to live in northern Wisconsin USA and saw eagles everyday. nothing else floats on the air like them. they never seem to move their wings but just keep going--- making slow loops--and just drifting on the wind. lovely

Yes it’s a golden eagle . You can tell by the large feathers at the tip of there wings . Just beautiful !

It looks like it might be a Golden Eagle. There are white spots under the wing which Golden Eagles have over there in Scotland. Great property and what a great adventure.

From what I have read/seen it appears to be an immature Golden Eagle. As adults, they loose the white patches and become all brown under the wings.

Compared your video to images of Golden Eagles in Scotland, and those white patches on the wings seem to match up.

My dad built custom homes for over 40 years and he hated nail guns. He said there was nothing that could do a better job than a good old fashioned hammer. Also there are some angles on a house where you can't even get a nail gun in there to do the job.

It's a buzzard mate, you can tell by the light crescent that starts on the outer tip of the wing and sweeps along the back-edge of the wing. Golden Eagles are a more uniform colour. You do definitely get Golden Eagles there, I've seen them overhead at Glenbeg and Kilchoan. Regardless, even though they are common, a soaring buzzard is a majestic sight. A clear giveaway for buzzards is there frequent call.

I find it bittersweet to watch your wonderful videos. I love to see how everyone is, and how everything is progressing, but I have such a pain in my heart because I miss Scotland so much. I had to pause the video several times because I became so emotional. I am half Scottish with a UK passport, and when I visited Scotland the first time I don’t think I had ever been happier in my life. Stay safe Shaun, Teka, and your families.

I would be so totally at peace living there! All the trees, fresh air, flowers.....Shaun I’d be in “hog heaven” !!! I worked in the casinos here for over 20 years, worked in convenience stores, video stores, dealing with mad hateful people most of my life, and some were the sweetest ever, some incredibly fun, a lot were hateful, and always mad. I feel bad for them, but it’s not me anymore. I just want some place to relax...get back to nature. This Covid thing isn’t over yet, it will be, but not yet. Stay safe when out with people. Big hugs! Love seeing you out and about, helping your Dad!!! ❤️❤️❤️

Thanks for the update. That is a whole lotta roof to replace. Are they going to put the slate tile back up there? Your aerial shots are gorgeous. I was imagining my relatives in the 1700's living there.

Thank you so much for showing the update, I am constantly curious about how the project is going. God bless your parents for taking on such a big task, it will be an amazing thing to see as progress is made. I live in CA. in the states and there is not so much respect for the history of places and things, they are more out with the old and in with the new and they tear down far more than they renovate which is sad to me. Yet there you have buildings older than my entire country. I really enjoyed this it was beautiful. Hope your curious cats stay in since you have birds of prey. :-)

I think it may be a juvenile golden eagle. Looks like white patches on the underwings which means it’s molting but hard to tell for sure against the bright sky. If it was grounded it would be easier to identify

That place is really big with lots of out buildings! It will be fabulous one day... tell your dad he's investing in a great treasure and to keep up the great work! Some day all the major work will be completed and he can relax and enjoy the fruits of his labor. I love how rustic, quiet and surrounded by nature it is... it's perfect for just wandering off into the woods for a nature walk. How I would just LOVE to disappear from here and come rent a room there for about 6 months just to get away from it all. And I love the "animal room" with all the glass windows...what a view! 🇨🇱❤️💯 Let me know when I can get on the waiting list, would ya?! 😉

Yeah, that's an eagle. Eagles hold their wings straight out at a 90 degrees to their bodies. Hawk wings are more v-shaped.

Thanks for the manse update! It's so beautiful there. Green and the birds singing. The pets have taken over the solarium, which is nice for them! Isla is gorgeous😻💕 What is growing in the chimney? Is the chimney still in use? Your Dad and George are really making some great progress. I keep waiting to see if he uploads an update. So happy for you and Teka to get out of town and into the mountains. I believe the bird was a hawk. Golden eagles are huge! Wingspan 6 feet. I'll send you some pictures of them on instagram. Hawks don't look anything like that. It's normally Buzzards that get mistaken for Golden Eagle, but that looks to have been an eagle.

You're so lucky! It's such a lovely place to be for you & the fam. I also enjoyed your extra camera crew today. I'm curious...We don't have real slate roofs here. How are they attached to the roof? Do they have holes in them? I would imagine it's easy to shatter one with an ill-placed hammer. I'm so charmed by the slate roofs, they're very attractive. And I've been to the coast where slate cliffs are tumbled all along the shoreline, so it's easy to see where Scotland has her slate for roofing and etc. Love it! Thanks for the everything today! I'm a bird lover, but I'm no good without my binoculars, 🙁.

The bird looks like a common buzzard; the underwing markings of golden eagles are less defined. I stay inside if there's a golden eagle eating a squirrel in my backyard, although I prefer them eating squirrels to rabbits since they cannot carry much weight and usually rip rabbits in half. It's not that I'm vegetarian; it's more that I lament the waste.

Could be wrong but doesn’t look big enough to be an eagle and a kestrel is a lot smaller than that and they flap their wings and hover. Looked like a buzzard to me 😊

Hi Shaun, I've been enjoying your channel for several years now & I do have a question for you (and for any of your subscribers living in Scotland): I'm a Canadian living in the U.S. but my dad who past in 1989 was born in Dundee. Growing up we always loved our Scottish roots. When my daughter was born in 1992 & my husband & I were considering names, my mother suggested Mackenzie or Skye. We immediately fell in love with the name Skye and that's what we named her. She is a beautiful woman and I think her name fits her perfectly. BUT, over the years I have wondered if she ever visits Scotland & the Isle of Skye would Scottish people find her name weird or corny? Is it used at all in Scotland as a first name? I had never met or heard of anyone called Skye before we name our daughter, but in recent years I do hear it from time to time here in the U.S. & Canada for both girls & boys. I am just curious so please don't be afraid to answer honestly..

Not an expert, but it looks like an eagle. At least in the western US, hawks have very wide tails and eagles have a larger wing span. The only hawk I know of that has a wing span to give an eagle a challenge is the red tail hawk. And it has shorter wings.
