A Highland Reel dance competition during the 2019 Oldmeldrum Sports & Highland Games in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. A Strathspey is performed by four dancers, initially beginning in a line, and dancing a ‘figure of eight’ to a suitable strathspey tune, then a quicker Highland Reel (using the same formation) follows the Strathspey.

I’m an Irish dancer and I want to try Scottish dancing. The arms up look very difficult and tiring. Beautiful dance. I appreciate it. Great job, dancers👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

As a former irish dancing who's currently learning it, it's great. There's a lot of similarities which is great but can be a bit confusing. I personally think it requires more stamina than soft shoe dancing but it's really fun

Ikr!!! I’m an Irish dancer but I’m Scottish! I think the arm thing will be okay if you do ceili dancing a lot, and we already have the shoes!!!

I learned the reason the Irish dancing has arms down and stiff close to body is during the British invasion centuries ago , did not allow immersion of Irish culture hence Irish dancing was banned yet the Irish continued to dance with arm by side so British soldiers from distance only saw jumping people up and down.

I thought there was a historical military connection - dancing used for athletic training. Regarding old time Scottish step dancing (Sean nòs in Ireland), it’s competitions that have formalised modern styles. I blame judges for trying to removing free style, but it lives on!

I've done both Irish and Highland dancing and I can guarantee you Highland Dancing is by far the hardest. It looks easy because it's slower but you think of the amount of balance amd strength you need when your jumping like an antilope in circles with your arms kept high in the air and your back completely stiff all while maintaining the absolute grace of a pure bred mute swan. Its hard..... its really flipping HARD!!! 😭😭😭😭

@@RustyTomato You're welcome. More commonly heard for this genre are "Devil in the Kitchen" or "Marquis of Huntley's Highland Fling". There is an article that may help you, which lists many more tunes. Look up *Bagpipe News Piping for Dancing Part 1* and see the article by Donald MacPhee. A quote from it: The Highland Fling is the most popular of all the Scottish highland dances. The type of tune that is played for the Highland Fling is the strathspey. The introduction is a four bar or 16 count intro and each step is equivalent to a part of music (eight bars or 32 beats). Dancers dance either a four step Highland Fling or six step Highland Fling. The tempo for the ’Fling is recommended at between 112-124bpm. As stated the tune type is the strathspey and the more popular or easily recognisable tunes for this dance for the dancer would be The Marquis of Huntly’s Highland Fling, Orange and Blue, and Devil in the Kitchen. Possible introductions for the Fling would be playing the last four bars of the first part or the second part and then playing the tune as written, keeping in mind as stated earlier eight bars or one part of music equals one step, so for a four step fling you would play a four bar intro and then four parts of a strathspey (two two-parted strathspeys) or for the six step Fling you would play a four bar intro and six parts of a strathspey.
