Usually I despise killing the main character of the franchise for a younger one, but this was a rare exception where they managed to redeem themselves by letting you know Connor is fighting the final battle too.
I would have thought Duncan would have to cut Kell's head off while flying in mid air, but it still was the greatest Highlander battle and quickening ever.
Yes it could’ve. I still remember seeing it in the theater back in 2000. I don’t like the new edit where we don’t see Connor and Duncan’s head morphing back and forth during the quickening! We actually got that edit here in the USA when I saw it
Jacob is so brutal. 4:14 to 6:15 I love how Connor and Duncan are basically sharing Duncan’s body here, and how Connor makes Jacob eat his own words like this. 6:19 to 6:31
The way they double back and show you the same thing twice always bothered me. And then, they have a CHAIN ROOM? What goes on in the Chain room ? Other than the chains going up, if you push the exact button.

What makes these immortal ? They are just evolutioned species like x-men or Abrahamic god needs some entertainment so it choose its choosen human to kill each other ? Is there written in script plot ?
@@arik2216 nobody knows. It’s one of the biggest mysteries in the franchise that they never really explained. Except for Highlander 2, but no one talks about that one.
@@Fingerling2012 They’re not, but as Jacob said when he slaughtered all the immortals at the sanctuary, he doesn’t care about the game or the rules. All Jacob cares about is “avenging” his father.
@@jordanelza8806 and that was a HUGE mistake by the writers. not caring and a literal volcanoe blowing up and killing you and everything within miles for fighting on holy ground is a rule you do not break.
It's amazing how far a man of faith has fallen when he not only gives in to revenge but comes to salivate it. Live only for it and nothing but. It makes Kell wearing a cross in general an insult. He thinks he is avenging his father when in reality he is shaming his adopted family with his actions. If it is true that revenge is a water vessel with a whole, holding nothing about the promise of emptiness, then he truly has nothing. Eternity and yet he has nothing.
Yeah. I've never put up with villains with frivolous reasons like him and that use what happen to them only as an excuse for behave badly. Jacob Kell is just a pathetic man.
@@lpallad1 sadly that's the MO of every villain. They're grievously injured or believe they are and then use that trauma to justify their behavior. The world hurt me so I'm going to take my pound of flesh from it. A sad cycle of violence and suffering.
@@Artisan1979 But there is a difference between those who have actually suffered and react wickedly but which makes sense, and those who use what happened to them only as an excuse to misbehave. For example, Magneto does what he does because of genuine suffering, and which in fact has understandable reasons for his mentality. Whereas Jacob Kell is a sadist who has abandoned himself to the worst side of himself, without any limits and inhibitions, just for revenge. If he just wanted to just kill Connor and shut the thing there it would have been understandable. Instead he reacted disproportionately to what had happened to him.
What? The plot, screenstory, direction and all was a garbage...really they ruined this saga and the tv series either. Connor was the last one after killing Kurgan. Duncan was alive in the same period of Connor so he should die first. Producers needed to think about their mistakes on Higlander 2 and 3 though Mario Van Peebles was ok as Villain but anycase it wasn't possible replace Kurgan storyline. Then no chance to screen it. It could be more fit having Christopher Lamber again as Connor just in the middle age time like a Prequel or during the events of Ramirez by Sean Connery, I guess it could be much more awesome! Highlander 1 is the best and the real one. Adrien Paul was cool as Duncan on the tv series but in this movie his character got ruined a lot...:(
@@sandrocoen3209 they screwed up the story far more with the 2nd Highlander movie. This one was a masterpiece by comparison. And looking back in time: with Highlander 5, which wasn't as good as 4, at least finished it.

I think there was going to be one for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 back in 2008 but with the abomination that was Highlander 5: The Source being released a year earlier…it’s easy to see why it sadly ended up being cancelled. A real shame too, I really wonder what it could have been like…

Imagine how powerful Duncan is now, he had 174 quickenings, killed Connor who had 262, so thats, so that's 437, Kell had 661 plus when he killed his followers bringing him to an eerie 666 (don't think that was a coincidence) Giving Duncan a minimum of 1103 cumulative quickenings. That's not even considering how many immortal kills each one of THOSE 1103 immortals had made
That’s not how it works. It’s not cumulative. Killing 200 immortal is not equal to killing one, who killed 200 before. Also your own training matters. You can’t just be a noob who just turned into immortal, kill the strongest immortal, and immediately become the strongest.
I already wrote above that this fight is very similar to the fight between Obi Wan (And Qui Gon, of course, but he appears indirectly in this similarity) and Darth Maul in The Phantom Menace. Now I’ll try to look at the similarities in a little more detail: 1. In both films, the fight begins in an open area and then moves to narrow locations that are located at a high altitude. 2. In both films, the villain was a better swordsman for almost the entire fight. 3. In Endgame, MacLeod is furious after learning that Kell killed Kate. In The Phantom Menace, Obi-Wan similarly rushes to attack Maul after he sees that he has killed Qui-Gon. 4. In both cases, this attack fails due to the fact that the villain uses a sneaky trick with his left free hand. Jacob Kell wounds MacLeod with a hidden blade, and Darth Maul uses the Force to throw Obi Wan into the mine. 5. Both Duncan and Obi-Wan defeated the villains only by miracle. In both cases, this was done by tumbling over the villain's head and then slashing horizontally with the sword. Both Jacob Kell and Darth Maul were overconfident and wanted to play with the victim in the end, which was the reason for their defeat. 6. In both cases, the defeated villain falls from a great height at the end. P.S. Filming for Endgame began 5 months after the release of The Phantom Menace. If anything, then I am not claiming that there is a fact of plagiarism. I respect both the Highlander universe and Star Wars. But the similarities between the duels from these films are obvious, and just analyzing them is interesting.

@@sandrocoen3209 There is no sense to kill Connor if Duncan will not be the last one even if he kill him. I like Duncan but Connor little more. I like them both. But the movies got no sense at all. I like only original movie and tv series. If you watch Connor in the first movie or in the series or even in 2 and 3 you ll see that is totally different character compared to Endgame Connor.

Srsly this movie was even worse than I thought. Connor got killed, that other McLeod beats the sh*t out of everyone without any sweat. Ridiculous. Edit : I loved Highlander - The Series with Adrian Paul but this movie is crap.
@@theo-jamesmoulton2000 True, methos likes to downplay his ability, and though he hid from the game for long periods of time he is 5000 so he must have taken quite a few heads.
I hate that there's an entire portion of the fight that they just show twice. I mean sure, sometimes you can re-use short shots creatively by just using a snippet, flipping them horizontally, etc. But they didn't even try to hide it by flipping it or using alternate angles. They just literally re-use an entire 15-second chunk of the scene twice within about 60 seconds and assumed people wouldn't notice. There's also a lot of really clumsy editing in this scene, especially when it comes to sound. Like when they end up in the chain-room (?) Duncan and Kell both make the exact same "Ugh!" sound effect within 10 seconds of each other? I really love the original movie, and liked the show and this movie a lot as a teenager in the early 2000's... but damn. None of the sequels hold up in retrospect.
I can see the potential awesomeness of that fight but if Kell got Methos' head and Quickening Duncan would have had no chance. Not even with Connor in him.
One thing I never understood about the whole Highlander lore was how an injury they'll inflict to themselves heals in like less than a minute, but wounds inflicted while fighting don't heal til that batch is done. Lmao
Sad to say but consistency was never the series' strong point. This movie flat out violated it in a big way. One of the big plot points is that Duncan's wife Kate from 200 years ago, now using the name Faith, hates him because Duncan, recognizing her as an unquickened immortal, stabbed her "fatally," triggering her quickening, and thereby depriving her of the chance to have children. At one point in the movie, she tells him she will never forgive him for depriving her of the opportunity -- meaning that if she hadn't quickened, she would presumably have lived a normal life, borne children, and died naturally of old age at some point. Importantly, _Duncan does not disagree._ He just tells her he's sorry, and he'll wait centuries for her forgiveness if that's what it takes. This contradicts the TV series, where they reinforced the idea that immortals _cannot_ have children, period. I remember an episode where an old girlfriend of Richie's emerged with an 18 month old son she says is Richie's. Duncan tells Richie it can't be, and when Richie protests that this child was conceived before his quickening, so maybe it is his, Duncan tells him "that's not how it works." When Kate/Faith confronted Duncan in this film, he should have told her "I didn't rob you of anything; none of us can ever have children, and you were _always_ going to quicken into an immortal at some point, because we seem to be fated to." But that would have robbed the movie of her reason for hating Duncan and working with Kell against him, so they threw consistency and series continuity out of the window.
I mean he's got Connor,Kell, the Kurgan,Kane,nakano all of those elite warriors power into his body all at once THAT QUICKENING SHOULD OF DESTROYED THAT ENTIRE BUILDING
Even though I liked this movie, it kind of ruined the whole story behind the movie and show. Because the point was for immortals to fight til there was only one left and they would get all the power. In this movie they make Duncan and Conner fight til there is only one to have the power to fight the evil immortal. And they make Duncan the last immortal with all the power. However, they didn’t kill Amanda or Methos. They have methos in this movie acting like a watcher and ignoring the fact that he is the oldest immortal alive. I don’t remember them mentioning his death, but you think with him being the oldest immortal live that they would have to kill him to gain a lot of power not all about Conner and Duncan. They ruin the story line because Duncan would of not been the remaining immortal. The only thing that is right is Duncan was the winner, other than that they went against the bases of the story line.
Kate, his first wife was alive at the end of the movie too. The whole thing as a huge mess. I loved the series, but they should have done the series as an alternate universe and had one movie, the original. Everything else just screwed it all up over and over.
The Canon regarding the entire highlander universe is just a mess. None of it really makes any sense. Going back to the very first movie Connor had already won the prize. He was the last immortal. So the show pretty much retconned the first movie when they made the TV show.
Originally, the first Highlander film was going to be a standoff, with Connor marrying Brenda and having children with her as well as growing old and being able to die. However, fans wanted a sequel to the Highlander film, so they did The Quickening, changing the name of the prize to "The Quickening" and continuing the whole thing of "Connor being the one", showing that Connor was old and frail in 2024 but when General Katana came down to earth, the prize was reactivated and essentially after killing one of Katana's minions, he became youthful and immortal again, which when he confronted Katana, Connor literally says "YOU changed MY plans, I was going to die old and peacefully, but YOU ruined that!"
Yeah he is he won, the other immortals we're evil and so forth Connor got tired of the fighting and outliving his loved ones so he basically passed his power down to Duncan who was much tougher mentally and physically.
Duncan should have finished him off quickly on account he has gone up against older and more powerful immortals. Does Grayson ring a bell? He has a lot of older immortals experience and power in him. He should be one of the most powerful immortals there is. I just don't buy the fact that he as getting trashed through out this fight scene.
I feel that Duncan's quickening should of been way more massive than this he has the power all of them! From all of the greatest warriors on the planet into his body all at once! THAT WHOLE BUILDING SHOULD OF EXPLODED WITH RAW POWER! Im talking about glass bricks machinery EVERYTHING! THAT POWER SHOULD OF TURNED INTO A SORT OF ENERGIZED ROARING DRAGON AND WENT INTO DUNCANS BODY! THEY COULD OF DONE ALOT BETTER TO SEND DUNCAN OFF IN STYLE WITH A BANG IN THE END! I MEAN DUNCAN WON HE HAD THE POWER! HE WON THE CROWN! STANDING ALONE ON A MOUNTAIN TOP HE IS THE CROWNED CHAMPION WINNER OF THE GAME!
Can we just take a moment to notice throughout the movie Jacob Kell is a MONSTER!!! He used to be a man of the cloth but resented Connor for killing his father. Jacob Kell is so different from every other bad guy in the series because not only is he one of the strongest immortals, psychologically throughout the movie he is a genius at getting inside peoples heads and attacking them mentally. His tactic got reversed and you can see it ALL OVER HIM when he's fighting Duncan and hears Connors voice come out of him. The fight took a whole lane change in that moment ❤❤
But also, 10 million USD in property damage, a foundry that will take months to rebuild. Lay-offs? A power surge that fries the grid? Duncan what the hell. With all the abandoned buildings in town, with all the playgrounds you could have picked.
I forgot how jumpy this scene is, editing wise, it's at times hard to follow and I could swear there's reused shots mid fight; as if they forgot that clip was already in there
I do hate that Obi-Wan flip finish though; why they couldn't have gone with the more satisfying 'special technique' sword lock. It's like, oh, snap he has a hidden blade, well how are you going to one up that move being the finisher? Oh, with a flip... well, that sucks.

1st biggest Quickening goes to Duncan MacLeod for killing Jacob Kell. 2nd biggest Quickening goes to Connor MacLeod for killing Kurgan. They both did all of New York City a big favor in getting rid of those guys.
You guys don't get it I grew up watching the movies and series when I was a lil chap lol this movie kinda doesn't make sense it's not that Duncan needed to kill Connor he could have done that without Connors quickening it's that Connor had enough he was burned out if you watch the series you will understand that
i dont know about this fight. duncan is a master level fighter in many disciplines, including close quarter hand to hand. this should have been over in the first couple of minutes.

I would personally like a prequel where Duncan is the noob like Richie was in series, and be able to see Connor in a mentor role. Also Methos should have gotten the spinoff, Amanda is a great supporting character, but she is not deep enough to be a lead. I heard Rumors of a new Highlander show starring Rosie Leslie of GOT (who is Scottish) and Duncan, Methos, and Amanda would be recurring characters. Duncan would be Rose's character's mentor similar to how Connor was Duncan's.
I agree with all this. The TV show was pretty good for a bit. However, the first movie was by far, the best. The depth of actors was quite strong in that movie too. I will say though...I miss the show...It took some weird turns the last few seasons or whatever they were.
